Lady Natalia's blow glances off the moss covered islands slippery surface, crashing into the water below as Ra comes in and once again grasps her shoulder, delivering some relief to her wounds.
Rodrigo and Shandor are up. The mossy island will act again on Sunday, causing Rodrigo and/or Shandor to delay their actions if they do not act before then, after which we will proceed through the rest of the initiative.

Shandor "The Beast"

The Varisian sorcerer turns to the impending threat, furor in his glowing red, almost orcish-looking eyes. His tattoos flash in the dim light of the ancient tomb, and his skin turns green and rough. An instant later, Shandor has turned into an elderly orc, full of cruelty and spite - a beast of wrath.
Stepping aside out of the creature's reach, he starts tracing in the air symbols of ancient Thassilon, runes of immense arcane power. The runes flare to life, and a burning arc erupts from the sorcerer's fingers, reaching to the shambling mound mound in an attempt to turn it to ashes.

Punctured by several spikes, Rodrigo starts to feel a little woozy, but shakes it off, clearing his head. Matters are not helped when hundreds of gallons of stagnant water come following down with him, thoroughly drenching him.
Fortunately for everyone else, though, there is no longer a movement penalty due to the water as it all rushes into the hole in the center of the floor!
Slowly standing after his brutal fall, Rodrigo finds himself in a long corridor, water dripping and cascading constantly from holes in the low ceiling. Metal grates topped with rusted spikes periodically pierce the floor at uneven intervals. Ahead of him, spikes beneath a gaping hole support the remains of a truly ancient corpse. Most of its clothing has rotted away, and the body is largely a conglomeration of bones held together by a husk of former armor.
The mossy island lurches forward with Lady Natalia still in its grip, squeezing the life out of her unmercifully, nearing the one who so harshly burned it.

'Damn this pile of rotting garbage! What the hell happened to Rodrigo? Gotta save yourself, girl... Make this one count!'
Natalia grunts under get strain if the constricting vines that have her wrapped up. Their grasp hasn't gotten any weaker even with Shandor's powerful fires burning them. With a grimace of oain, and hatred, the Taldan noblewoman swings her mace, hoping to land a telling blow.

The shambling mound is engaged in a grapple, and thus has the grappled condition, does it not? Therefore, it shouldn't get attacks of opportunity on anyone, unless I'm missing something. (Always a possibility.) I know it missed Rodrigo, but that will make a difference to things like 'where I move and where I cast from', if I'm having to take into account attacks of opp. My actions below are assuming that the mound IS grappling, and therefore 'grappled', and cannot make attacks of opportunity. Otherwise Ra is provoking with his movements this round, and would have provoked last round when he approached Natalia, also.
Also, Natalia, Rodrigo is right about Furious Focus. It applies only when using a 2H weapon, or a 1H weapon with both hands. Because you are grappled, you do not have the option to two-hand your weapon.
Sharna... facepalms at Rodrigo toppling down into the trap she had warned of. Sigh. Well, Landros and the plant creature is the greater priority at the moment-- more even than Shandor's transformation.
"Ra, return to me!"
The hawk dutifully abandons Natalia's shoulder again and zips back to Sharna's. Sharna steps forward to just behind Natalia, and lays a hand on her shoulder, murmuring words beneath her breath.

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21

When Rodrigo had run by, the mound had not actually committed to the grapple, as grab is part of its natural attack, so was not considered grappled. Only when it maintained the grapple to keep Natalia out of the fight as it moved towards Shandor, the larger threat it perceived, did it actually gain the grappled condition. So, yes, it cannot make attacks of opportunity at this time.
Sharna al-Subaiyyat
|
Grab: If a creature with this special attack hits with the indicated attack (usually a claw or bite attack), it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity.
By RAW, the grapple would seem to go off immediately after the grab attack. The mound was grappling Natalia before it 'maintained'; she was grappled, it was grappled.
Either way, it doesn't make a huge difference for right now, but as I understand it, the instant you make a grapple check, regardless of whether it was instigated by a grab attack or not, you are now 'grappled' (if the grapple check is successful).
Lady Natalia Landros
|
Sorry about missing that on Furious Focus... never actually used it on any attack other than a 2H attack before. As I have said before, though maybe not at this game, I learn something new EVERY game! Well, at this point, it just means I missed by 1 more than I did before, but will take that into consideration for future attacks, assuming she lives!!
And I would agree with Sharna... you have to be grappling in order to constrict... and unless the mound has a special ability, as soon as it succeeds at the grapple, it is grappled (though controlling the grapple). But, no bother. The AOO missed.
Natalia looks back at Sharna, mouthing 'Thank you', though not enough wind is in her lungs to actually vocalize the words. 'I may have to excuse that bird one accident if I survive this...'

Since Zaquille did enough damage to kill the thing, does that mean Shandor can save his spell? I ask, because he was after Zaquille in the initiative order. Assuming she hit with all attacks that is.

Yep, Shandor can save his spell if he so wishes.
Soon after the large, mossy island moves forward, two arrows slam into what could be considered its side. With a final lurch, it releases Lady Natalia and slumps to the ground, no longer moving.
Meanwhile, downstairs, Rodrigo gingerly pulls himself off of the poisoned spikes, and has a look around. The tunnel seems to stretch north for as far as he can see. Above the ancient corpse is a large gaping hole, similar to the one now above him. The water that came down with him filled the tunnel somewhat, but then quickly drained down the grates beneath the spikes.
Moving forward to the corpse, Rodrigo finds a pile of mush next to the corpse that must have once been a backpack. Inside it still houses an ancient adventurer's kit - torches, a glass vial, and a coil of rope that seems to have withstood the millennia in good order. Ahead, he spies another set of spikes in the gloom. The ceiling above these is still in once piece, but he can faintly see some sort of release mechanism in the dim light.

"Well. That was an interesting way to start things off, wasn't it," she says drolly. "Ra: kindly go check on the good Rodrigo?"
The bird shrieks something in the affirmative (presumably) and swoops down into the pit to land on Rodrigo's shoulder. Ra expresses his concern by letting out a shrill cry right in Rodrigo's ear.
"Ah. Ra says that Rodrgio smells of much blood, but he is standing," Sharna relays drily to the others. "Rodrigo? Shall we lower a rope?"

I'll definitely save it - thanks!
Shandor slowly calms down as the adrenaline leaves his organism. Yet he retains his orcish appearance, still bearing tattoos that easily identify him.
"An interesting guardian, though I'm wondering if it fulfilled that role on purpose or by accident. We should aid Rodrigo to climb back up so that we may continue exploring this place."
Lady Natalia Landros
|
Showing humility for the first time since any of this group of Pathfinders met her, Natalia says, "Thank you for saving me. That thing would have killed me if it were not for your quick actions. I can take care of my healing,.. You should help out Rodrigo."
Natalia pops her wand of Cure Light Wounds out of her wrist sheath, and starts casting,

Sharna is perfectly willing to use Rodrigo's wand on him, and also tut about how he should be more careful where he steps. Ra, once more on her shoulder, shrieks in agreement.
She inclines her head mildly at Landros. "Explore, report... cooperate. I am pleased that Ra and I were of some assistance."
She crouches by the charred remains of the shambling mound, drawing a dagger and leafing through the plant-creature's... corpse, if it can be called that. She neatly severs any interesting plant growths, wraps them in cloth, and puts them away in her pack for later study.
"Ra says the tunnel that you... found... seems to go for some way. Should we endeavor to explore the ground level first, my friends, or descend below?"
She will also cast detect magic, to see if the armor or anything else on the impaled pit-corpse is magical.
Zaquielle

"Rodrigo, so that unlucky traveller, he fell down the same trap as you?" asks Zaquielle.
"Before we move to the centre of this tomb, we'd best make sure nothing lurks out here to get in the way of our retreat. Let us discover what is in these side ways first, tomb makers were clever and the obvious way might not be the real way." the red sands ranger says, before she once more takes up a protective position covering her companions. "It may be safer to go where that creature came from."

"Potion of Heroism, and a rope of climbing? Both will be very useful. In fact, given that I am going to be at point, would anyone mind if I took the Potion of Heroism? Would be very useful, especially considering what just happened."
Additionally, Natalia is going to take a moment to cast some buff spells... she doesn't want to get in that situation again. She casts Shield of Faith, to increase her AC to 23, and Bull's Strength to increase her STR to 18. Unless it isn't desired, she'll also take the potion of Heroism.
Standard procedure, for now, will be for her to cast Guidance every minute, just in case.
