The concept here is this young man to be a noble in town that has...'fallen'...on hard times. He maintains his innocence and his words are usually strong enough that people believe him. He does have a hard time focusing on things, which makes him maintaining his tales a bit rough at times, but overall, he is a cunning with his words, his mind...and his blade.

The plan would be to go unchained rogue, and depending on how things roll in the future and how Vigilante changes from playtest to release, maybe switch over when it releases. I would like for him to try and maintain his noble status and 'redeem' his name...while having the alternate identity to be truly evil. I'm thinking deceit, knowledge, and overall force of personality backed by a swift blade (and maybe a stinging poison from time to time) will keep people in line.

Eventually, I would potentially like to have the network/thieves guild type of leadership, but that's, of course, long term.

@Heofthehills: Slight issue - once you do something bad enough to land you in Brandescar, you're permanently cut off from the outside world. You'll literally be branded as "Forsaken." After you escape, there's no going back to your old life. uRogue with a spy network is fine. The Vigilante rebuild will depend entirely on how they modify it before it's released. The playtest version was a laughably bad class and filled a niche that didn't need filling (because Bluff + Disguise is totally a thing).

@Mordred: using the human ages is fine. The Aasimar/Tiefling age errata was a mistake. Also, trait 36: "You can communicate telepathically with any sentient creature with which you are in contact" is acceptable as it lets you communicate with people but is still very limited.

Zyxtivia Darkshadow:
You're short 2 background skills

Erick the Strangler:
You're short 2 background skills

Zelimir Seric:
You're short 2 background skills. Also, you start with nothing - including gold

Ardra Pain de Veau:
I couldn't find the trait "Genius Professional." What is it? Your Will save should be +2. Your unarmed strike should be +0 to hit for 1d3 NL damage, and your bombs should be +4 to hit.

Sholano Gale:
Your CMB should be -1

Cole, Warpriest of Asmodeus:
Where's your DR coming from?

Shadow Lodge

Got it, that's actually easy to fix IF they make vigilante something worth playing. The alternate identity could be the new person coming into the city as a way to reinfiltrate the nobility! (And yes, the playtest was awful...I tried repeatedly to build something that wasn't just better being built as something else...there wasn't anything...). As it is...he will have to become a black market, back alley sneak...

I feel like the Vigilante might be good in heavily intrigue-based, urban campaigns...

So, basically, no AP ever. Except maybe the Blight. XD In the playtest incarnation, at least - I'm reserving judgment on the full class until it's out.

(I'm also gonna wait, like, 2-3 day to make my profile in the hope that the Hero Lab files come out. XD I'll make it by hand if I have to, though.)

Dark Archive

Added the two background skill points!

Much appreciated(Ages, Telepathy)

Here is the current draft.

I have not decided on a curse yet, so thats missing currently.
At the moment, she also has Soul Seer racial picked(which would not be compatible with exchanging SLA for the Telepathy), but thats mainly because I wanted to exchange "Fiendish Sorcery" for anything else.(but the only other options are not compatible with "Pass for Human" or also require the SLA). Sigh. I assume I'm going to be stuck with the Sorcery, because Telepathy, even if it's touch-based, is too flavorful to pass up ^_^

(Also, being a Rakshasa Spawn, it could be flavorful to pay the heavy Feat Tax to get Improved Fiendish Sorcery, Skill Focus(Disguise), and 3x Eldritch Heritage(Rakshasa)...(even though Improved Fiendish Sorcery would have very little effect there-))

Whoop, sorry about that, must have been an artifact from the previous character draft. All fixed. I do still have a question, though (reiterated from earlier).
I was looking at the Kindred-Raised racial trait, but ultimately decided I didn't want to rework Sholano's history just to make it fit mechanically. I like his bastard heritage too much.
Any chance I could use that trait (if I decided I want to, I'm still not actually sure) without actually being raised by half-elven parents?

Kindred-Raised:
While most think of people with one human and one elven parent when they think of half-elves, some half-elves are raised by two half-elven parents. Such half-elves feel less like outsiders, making them more confident, but less adaptable without the exposure to a human parent. They gain a +2 bonus to Charisma and one other ability score of their choice. This racial trait replaces the half-elf's usual racial ability score modifiers, as well as adaptability, elven immunities, keen senses, and multitalented.

@your benevolent dictator
Sorry, most of that was leftover from a previous incarnation. Thought I'd gotten everything, obviously not.

I'm actually having trouble locating the supplement where Genius Professional is located myself, which troubles me to no end, but the trait allows you to use your Int rather than Wis to modify profession rolls. I'm still digging for the source; hopefully you'll allow it

Just so its down here, here is my Work in Progress Character (From Sir Horde).
The name will obviously change when I think of a good first name but I thought it funny for a guy who was stuck in an eternal winter to have a last name like Summers XD

I've got most of my character sketched out now, but I'm kind of at a loss trying to pick feats. I decided to focus on shapeshifting now, since he's just coming into his draconic heritage, and I'll develop a bit of blasting and some other magical abilities at later levels.

Are there any interesting feats for shifters in the Spheres of Power book?

Extra Bestial Trait gives you more of those. ^^ So if you've got nothing else to spend feats on, you can always enhance your shifted form.

Ya I have a question for you guys (those who have the books).
Can you think of/find a few good drawbacks/boons/traditions that might be good for me?
Reading through some of your guys posts and I have found a few that would be great for me (such as easy focus where i will be maintaining a cold front almost all the time XD), but I have little to chose from.
See any that would be good for a Cold/Weather caster?
Also, how does the drawback/boon system work? Same for the Traditions.

The drawback system is fairly straightforward.

General Drawbacks apply to pretty much everything you're doing, and cover things like adding components to your spells (Spheres has no native components). Taking drawbacks gives your character some kind of penalty, but in return, you get additional Spell Points (which fuel stronger powers).

If you take enough drawbacks, you can trade some or all of the Spell Points you would've gotten for Boons, which buff you up instead.

Sphere-Specific Drawbacks - and make no mistake, they are genuine drawbacks with real penalties - limit your use of a Sphere somehow, and are chosen when you first take the Sphere. These drawbacks give you a bonus talent in that Sphere, allowing you to get an extra ability in return for the penalty. You can get rid of this penalty by paying a talent at a future point.

Traditions are just collections of Drawbacks and Boons designed to emulate certain themes - traditional casters, divine casters, and so on. They're an easy way to add flavor if you don't want to customize things yourself.

As for what would be good for you, look through the list and pick things that match your ideas. ^^

For cold weather, don't pick up weather until you've got several levels. It's REALLY weak at the start. XD

Thats the problem, I cant find a list and I dont have the book ^-^ (Yet)
As such I am hoping that someone would be willing to give out a few select tidbits that I might be able to use.

Ooh, Extra Bestial Trait sounds pretty good, but I have to have the Bestial Trait feature before I can get that right? So... level 2?

This should be more or less everything. I still have a few things to clarify:

  • What should qualify as a background skill? For example, I have ranks in Perform, but that will be part of his backstory and will have a mechanical advantage next level (Versatile Performance). I have other good alternatives, so it's not a big deal.
  • Does my casting tradition look ok? I'm not currently planning on taking protection or destruction, but I left those in place to align with the Inquisitor casting tradition that I based it on.

My appearance/personality information will get filled out in the next day or two. Similarly for the rest of my backstory (it feels a little thin/poorly written right now). Thank you for the interest, GM B.D.

@GM:
Alternate trade for spell like ability. I'm not attached to it if you don't like it. I didn't misunderstand did I? I though you said we could use the table trade outs, or did you just meant the alternate heritage? Sorry if I misunderstood.

@Curses-: Friendless is probably in the same bucket as Frenetic, is it? Just asking ;)

Your Benevolent Dictator wrote:

I will add Craft=Alchemy and Profession=Cooking as her skills if selected

Here she is GM, my infernal sorceress. She still needs her bio,but all the math is there. Unfortunately, while I like SoP, I am not very familiar with it enough to use it properly without struggle, so I'm going to stay with the regular casting if that is okay.

She also needs her skill points to be allocated.

@Saranda: not a problem. I'll send you the info about the class rework so you can decide if you want to use it or not.

Cole:
I thought that's what it was from, but you still have the SLA listed on your sheet. Some of the table is allowed, but it always needs to be run by me first. The stat increases and DR, for example, aren't allowed.

@Godfrey: the Destruction "drawback" is actually a strength in this campaign. I've made it a talent with pre-reqs. I'm on the fence with the Protection one for the same reason. Regarding background skills: they're skills you could use to earn a living. Perform/Heal/Appraise/Craft/Profession/etc

@Sholano: Kindred-Raised is allowed.

@Ardra: I prefer having the source available for all character options. If you and I can't find it by the submission deadline, you'll have to swap out the trait.
---------------------------------
My sister's getting married tomorrow, so I'll be away from the computer until Saturday. As such, I won't be doing any build audits until then.

@GM:

No worries sorry about that. Would you be cool with the oversized hands. I can see him requesting a large War Mace from the Cardinal to bust mitran heads like melons. Would be using it one handed going mace and shield build.

Thanks, I'll look into the info you sent.

@GM: Would it be possible to work towards getting the Fling/Powerful Wings/Fly-by Attack feat chain? They're normally Strix feats, but it would work really well for turning into a giant dragon, flying in and picking up the paladin and chucking him at the wizard.

Your Benevolent Dictator wrote:

@Sholano: Kindred-Raised is allowed.

Well, dang. Now I have to make a decision. I'll leave it out for the moment while I think about it. Thanks.

Shadow Lodge

Much as I enjoy you guys, I don't think I can play this, as I am not cut out for evil and creating a character just keeps getting clunky in my head.

Your Benevolent Dictator wrote:

Congrats! Hope the big day went well for all concerned.

I think the build is now complete. Just for completeness:

Character portrait

Companion portrait

Background, Description, notable NPCs and crunch (for Hecate & her companion Bathalazar) are in the profile.

Thanks for your consideration - any questions/comments, let me know.

I've updated my profile to include my stat block.

@Heofthehills: Sorry to see you go. Good luck with your endeavors.

@Mordred: The Friendless curse is allowed with one modification: creatures always start out one step more unfriendly with you.

@Marvin: those feats are allowed as long as you qualify for them. For example, you can take Powerful Wings, but you'll only get the extra attacks and other benefits when in the form of a dragon or other winged beast.

@Cole: That alternate trait is allowed.

Hectate Reeve:
The "Arcane Empowerment" feat is designed for Vancian casters who want to dabble in spherecasting. As an Incanter, it won't have any effect for you. Also, your companion only has 10 HP (5 HD + 2 CON + 3 Touchness). As it has no levels in a PC class, its first HD is not maximized.

Marvin Fenster:
Everything looks good. Just add the two background skills. Your shapeshifting will be very nasty to start out, as Blank Form lets you stay human while still granting yourself traits - including the two traits unlocked from Dragon Transformation.

Robin Weaver:
Everything looks good. I'll allow Fiendish Sorcery to apply to the Rakshasa bloodline, by the way.

Saranda Damusil:
Your statline isn't quite right. You start with an 18 that you can't touch aside from racial adjustments. Then you get an 8 that can't be decreased aside from racial adjustments. You then get 15pts to assign how you wish, although at one stat must remain below 10 when you're done.

An easy fix would be: STR 8, DEX 14, CON 12, WIS 16, CHA 20

Someone Summers:
I've caught a few errors - likely because you don't have the SoP book. No worries. ;-) You currently have 4 magic talents, and they're all assigned. (Nature(water), Create Water, Weather, Cold Lord). You're also only CL 1. The "Sphere Focus" feat applies to the DCs of your abilities. However, if you exchange several of your Incanter bonus feats for a sphere specialization, you'll gain an extra talent and count that sphere as +1 CL.

Godfrey Leitner:
Everything looks fine. Just remember that because you have the "Focus Casting" drawback, you'll be making concentration checks any time you try using a sphere ability until you find the object. What is your bonded object, by the way?

Heeeey, welcome back. o wo/

Welcome back, I hope the marriage went great?

Also, thanks for the review. I put the backstory on hold for the moment until I was certain regarding the build.
@curse: Excellent.
Hehe. Now I'll need to pick up Dual-Cursed Oracle Archetype- ^_^

I already made her Deaf(+Mute) except some aspects in her backstory.
But the boni granted by Friendless synergize too well with Rakshasa to pass up.(morale bonus to disguise+ make class skill, when I need skill focus in it to get eldritch heritage; constant nondetection which lets me grap detect thoughts(which further synergizes with the limited telepathy she has) from the bloodline at level 11(instead of the L9 constant nondetection there))...

Now everybody is unfriendly towards her too(guess they heared what she did to that butler). Poor girl. No wonder she snaps and starts burning things. People can only get pushed so far. Been a long time since I've seen Carrie...guess I could try and find some more inspiration there ;)

Alright, thanks for telling me that. I have already made the changes and am starting to input skills and her traits.

Sounds good. I totally missed the background skills section.

Probably last question: does the Flight Bestial Trait (level 6) grant wings? It doesn't say specifically, but 30 ft. Flight with poor maneuverability is usually winged flight, not magical, and magic flight is really more of the purview of the telekinesis sphere, not alteration.

Done. She now has her skills, traits, and a drawback.

Understood, thanks for the corrections. I've swapped out the Arcane Empowerment feat for Extra Magic Talent (Greater ghost strike) and fixed Bathalazar's hit points.

YourBenevolentDictator wrote:

Yea, that should be ok with me. His casting tradition is essentially a blessing from Asmodeus, so he'll use a holy symbol like a cleric or inquisitor would. In theory he had one on him before he was captured, but it's probably been destroyed by now.

I'm all up to date with corrected skill points now. Should be good to go.

I have made the needed changes to my profile.

There was a slight adjustment to his story, race, and starting class.

In short, he is seeking to become an Anti Paladin of His greatness, but does not consider himself worthy of that honor until he has proved himself.

A possible level progression is spoiled in the profile, let me know if it looks problematic.

He is still a fanatical believer, but he is more a soldier than a leader at this time.

But always looking for that next step!

@Marvin Fenster: Because nothing is stated, I believe that means you don't gain wings. However, as it has the (Ex) tag, you're clearly granted a natural means of flight. Having permanent wings is both a benefit and a drawback, so I'll allow you to decide when the time comes.

@Saranda: Your CMD should be a point lower now that you've changed your stats around.

@Ekkehardt: Looks like I finally need to get familiar with that race. It's not I've allowed in my games ... until now. ;-)

@Ardra/Saranda/Godfrey: what's your anticipated party role? Most of the other submissions have been easy to figure out, but you three can go in a few different directions, and I don't want to put you in the wrong spot.
-----------------------------------
UPDATE
The following people still need to submit a completed character:
Rednal
Zogg Run-catcher
GM Aest
The Pale King
Gilthanis
Spazmodeus
EmissaryOfTheNorth
Ambriss Hastings

For everyone else, make sure you put your background and character pic in your profile. There's still a little over 4 days left. :-)

"I await the decision to escape this accursed place and be free to extract revenge upon those that wronged me!"

Zyxtivia ready with stats, embedded portrait and the closest profile pic i could find

I'm planning to be a skills character (good bluff/diplomacy/sense motive and rogue-type skills) with a focus on supporting via debuffing (black magic tradition/witch hexes/death sphere/etc). I'll also be a backup melee fighter (Fencing Grace) and scout/rogue fill-in (trapfinding from charlatan tradition). With my stat distribution, I'll be a caster first and a melee fighter second.

Edit: I had forgotten my background skills, so I put 1 rank in Profession(Farmer) and 1 rank in Perform(Dance). The sing/dance skills are reflective of part of the courtly training he received in order to infiltrate the upper echelons of Talingarde's society (be it as a disguised courtier or a jester/bard).

All right, hammered her together for now. XD I'm PRETTY sure all of this is right, though the format might change slightly once the Hero Lab files are actually released.

Special Abilities
--------------------
Casting Ability: Celestine uses Charisma as her casting ability.
General Drawbacks: General drawbacks grant the caster bonus spell points according to the chart in the Spheres of Power book. Celestine has taken 3 drawbacks, and gains an additional spell point every odd level.
. . Magical Signs: Your magic is accompanied by a tell-tale sign; for example, your body glows brightly, the sound of tortured souls shriek as you cast, feelings of a deep chill affect all creatures within 30 ft. All nearby creatures know when you are using magic, as well as the nature of the magic used. (Celestine's darker skin glows with runic markings)
. . Somatic Casting (x2): You must gesture to cast spells—a process that requires you to have at least 1 hand unoccupied. When using magic, you cannot wear armor heavier than light without incurring a chance of arcane spell failure. You may select this drawback twice. If taken a second time, you cannot wear any armor or use a shield without incurring a chance of arcane spell failure.
Personal Warp: You may only target yourself with your teleport ability. You cannot gain the Unwilling Teleport or Group Teleport talents. You cannot gain this drawback if you possess the Bender drawback.
Spell Pool (7/day): An incanter gains a small reservoir of energy he can call on to create truly wondrous effects, called a spell pool. This pool contains a number of spell points equal to his class level + his casting ability modifier (minimum: 1). This pool replenishes once per day after roughly 8 hours of rest. This pool is enlarged by the Drawbacks Celestine has taken.
Still Spell You can cast a spell with no somatic components. +1 Spell Point to cast, +1 step on the casting time table.
--------------------
"Justice? Honor? Your words are as worthless as the ideals you claim to serve. You would have all of Talingarde bow down to your master, and all the people obey your decrees, without the freedom to choose for themselves what path to follow."

"The only difference between us is that I don't lie about it."

There are many crimes in Talingarde - some people murder others, some people burn buildings to the ground, and some dig up graves for experiments. To Celestine, these crimes are nothing more than the pathetic excesses of common rabble, and she has no admiration for madmen or petty criminals.

Her focus is on nothing less than overthrowing the monarchy and re-instituting Talingarde's historical ties to Asmodeus himself. The best way to describe Celestine's normal behavior is "Practical Evil". She has exactly no problems with pretending to be good, and she doesn't go out of her way to commit crimes just because it's possible to commit them. She generally doesn't backstab her companions, either, on the theory that they're more useful to have around as meat shields.

(Besides, Asmodeus has... problems... with people who break their word. Sneaking in clauses to give yourself an advantage is one thing - encouraged, even - but not violating the actual, literal wording of agreements.)

Ability-wise, Celestine is a powerful Incanter, albeit one with a few specific drawbacks. Her abilities have only just begun to grow, but she's already started putting them to good use, and the basics are as follows:

The art of [Destruction] has given her a blast of force she can toss around all day. While not especially strong just yet, it's something she always has access to, and that's got some value of its own.

As part of her connections with the infernal realms, Celestine also has some command of [Fate], which allows her to bless allies and support their efforts. She's been known to use this from the middle of a group, helping drastically improve their efforts.

She also has some degree of talent with [Protection], warding herself and her allies from harm. It's true that defense is often associated with goodly people... but people who think that haven't seen the endless fortresses of Hell. This is Celestine's practical nature coming to the fore again - allies who are protected are better able to accomplish their shared goals, and she cares more about succeeding in the first place than how that success is achieved.

Finally, she has the ability to [Warp] herself around, teleporting straight past obstacles in her way. As if that weren't enough, she also possesses an extradimensional storage space that can be used to hide objects where nobody can find them, making her a naturally outstanding smuggler. This is the ability she's kept hidden - the kingdom is unaware that Celestine could simply disappear from the prison at essentially any time she wanted, and indeed, she allowed herself to be captured for the very purpose of escaping and proving that the Kingdom isn't as monolithic as it likes to pretend. Of course, even she couldn't have predicted what was about to happen at Branderscar Prison, nor how it would throw her own plans into disarray...

The power she has doesn't come without its price. Celestine's skin has two distinct tones, with the darker side representing the corruption of her infernal ties, and strange runes glow on this skin when she uses magic. She also needs to use her hands to focus the magic energy, and has difficulty casting without doing so, though she is capable of spending added time and effort to cast without shaping the power when she really needs to.

Balefire!

I missed my background skills and traits...

I'll need to update those in the AM.

Alrighty, picture all added in to my description.

And it occurs to me I never really gave a rundown of how I expect Sholano to work in game. Most of it should be pretty clear, but nonetheless - he's almost entirely a utility guy. He's got full sneak attack, and will be picking up a few Feint feats so he can do something in combat, but skills are his bread and butter, especially the socials. If he's carrying his weight in combat later on, then I may even go so far as to pick up some of the skill boosting feats, but I can go either way on that depending on how his performance is playing out.

UPDATE
I've opened the Discussion tab. To help pass the time until recruitment closes, I'd like to get some writing samples.

Zyxtivia Darkshadow – Elf Witch (bouda)
Erick the Strangler – Human Brawler (strangler)
Zelimir Seric – Human Antipaladin
Ardra Pain de Veau – Tiefling Alchemist (preservationist)
Sholano Gale – Half-Elf uRogue (charlatan)
Cole, Warpriest of Asmodeus – Tiefling Inquisitor (sanctified slayer/infiltrator)
Hectate Reeve – Human Incanter
Marvin Fenster – Human Shifter
Robin Weaver – Tiefling Oracle (deaf, flame)
Saranda Damusil – Changeling Sorcerer (infernal)
“Someone” Summers – Human Incanter
Godfrey Leitner – Human Hedgewitch
Celestine – Human Incanter
Linus Traian - Kitsune Swashbuckler (inspired blade)
Ekkehardt - Skinwalker Fighter (lore warden)

Please post once (and only once) in Discussion. I want a recap of the last hour or two before you got caught and sentenced to Brandescar. Don't worry about the journey to the prison, as that's where the campaign starts. Basically, I'm looking for an example of your normal posting style. In other words, don't give me a novel, but I'd like to see how you do dialogue, inner thoughts, and descriptive text. If you've already done something similar during this recruitment, it's fine to do a copy/paste.

As more people give me completed characters, I'll let them do the same.

Fixed. Will begin to write the next part of the recruitment. :0

I was just browsing the player's guide wondering about my planned build later and came across Step 4 of character creation, where they recommend a house rule to allow 2 extra skills. Are we counting BG skills as that? Do we get yet another two skill points? Or are we just ignoring it?

It's totally cool whichever way, of course, but I just realized I totally didn't build myself that way, and I'd like to add in the extra skills if that's a thing.

So I have changed his name to Son Summers (kinda like how Goku is often called Son Goku in DBZ), but I may very well change it if I quickly decide I dont like it :/

I didnt realize that you had to spend a Talent to unlock a Sphere!
As for my CL, are you sure? The Sphere Focus feat says it boosts your Mage Level, which would boost your caster level as well. (or is it written differently in the actual book?)

Sphere Focus:

Choose one Sphere you have access to. You gain a +1 bonus to mage level when using that sphere, plus an additional +1 for every 4 [Supernatural] feats you possess. This bonus to mage level stacks with all others, and affects all aspects of the sphere, including Save DCs, the Conjuration sphere's Companion, the Death sphere's undead control limit, and all other effect dependent on mage level.
Link

That and the Sphere Specialization didnt really excite me so I will stick with the bonus feats :)
Also, I had my 2 bonus skill points in Knowledge (Nobility) and Survival, however Summers is supposed to be an orphan street urchin so I dont really want to give him a skill like profession :/

As such I am going to have to do another look through and make some choices, I will throw up another post after that ^-^
Edit: I already dont like the name :/ Gotta keep thinking! (looking for a warm sounding name for ironys sake or something chilly)
