Aw... I remember doing that for hours for my baby nephew and brother. Your arm gets tired, but that moment when they finally get to sleep-
Oh, I digress. It's just a reflection paper/summative evaluation of what I learned in my language methods course.
Mostly, I am relating what I learned about body language and communicative teaching and how I related it to my junior field experience. It's, graciously, all anecdotal, no citing needed. One of the easiest things I've had to write all semester, in fact.

Sorry to hear about your daughter Karo, sick babies are no fun. How old is she again? My wife and I are supremely blessed with a son who sleeps (mostly) through the night.

Good luck on your paper Chloe. Sounds like fun to get to relate your experiences to what you've learned, or at least like a welcome change of pace from the usual rigors of academia.

GM on another note- Karo in combat. What do you think of Karo casting a spell such as Shocking Grasp, while HOLDING his elven curve blade and holding the spell charge, then on his next turn, attacking with the curve blade with the spell discharging on a successful hit?

Nice to see y'all! We have a lot of parents in this game. My boys are 11 and 15, so I spend less time holding sick babies and more time helping with math homework and wondering whether the party my older guy is at on Saturday night will get visited by the cops because it's too loud... But that's only happened once, and they're awesome kids, so I don't want to paint the wrong picture of them.

@Psychic Machinery - if you're working on the VERY large oil spill of two years ago, I spent about a month in the Gulf overseeing clean-up contractors after it happened. But we probably shouldn't go into details, if you're on the defendant's side. :D

@Chloe - that's fasciinating that they include the body language aspect of communication in your teaching studies. I'm a big language buff, and body language is part of that - I lived in Italy for a while, and the body language element of their communication is so huge, I wonder if they ever understand each other on conference calls.

And finally - that was a very nicely crafted combat post, GMPM. Time to turn my attention to it.

Ah, so you're old hat at sick kids. The boy is our first, so everything is new and shiny, even the gross boogers.

Karo, I've skimmed those threads and my recollection is that the Dev's have granted their blessing on the action you propose, so I'm ok with it, and RaW you can even deliver your attack in the same round you cast the spell, but with the following caveat.

When a player releases one hand off a two-handed weapon, they cease to wield it, and as such, do not threaten the squares they would normally threaten and may not make attacks of opportunity or participate in flanks and most importantly, cannot use spellstrike to discharge a touch spell with said weapon, unless they spend a swift action to "re-arm" as it were.
Of course, you are ineligible for Spell Combat with a two-handed weapon, so that option is off the table as well in the scenario you propose.

So, bottom line, you can do it, but you can't do it and be armed and still soup up your weapon with arcane pool points in the same round.

Also, on the topic of Spell Combat and Spellstrike, I am totally ok with the use of Arcane Mark as a 0 level touch spell, so if you want to go that route, please feel free.

@ GM, yeah I guess you could say I'm an "old" hat. My first two put us through the wringer when they were 4 and 3 mnths old. I hesitate to tell the stories to "new" parents because they are a little scary. (Plot hook)
How old is your little guy?

Combat-
So that was kinda of what I was thinking, just let me know if I overstep.

On a tangent-
You know I'm really new to Pbp and RPG in general (I've read all the D&D books since I was a kid, but never actually participated in a game until about six months ago, now I realize what I was missing the last 20+ yrs.). I kinda of assumed that I was at least twice as old as most of the people I was gaming with, though after talking with you guys, I guess that may not be true. ( Not suggesting that you are old, just obviously not still in high school)

I really wasn't fishing for that, just trying to stay as young as possible.

My son is eight months old. I'm thirty-four. Kinda similarly to you Karoz, I played d&d when I was young, then read a lot of d&d books for a long time when I didn't really have people to play with except for a few drunken sessions in college. I found a regular gaming group in Chicago when I was thirty and played a lot of PFS with them (let me tell you about my 8th level cleric / holy vindicator of pharasma!) and since the youngster has been around, it's really hard to find time to sit down at a table, so PbP works pretty much perfectly for me.

Nice to get a little info about the people in this game.

I'm 43, with 2 sons, 11 and 15.

I started playing D&D with my big brother when I was 9 or so, which would have been 1978. I played constantly through high school, intermittently in college and grad school, and then very rarely after that, so I had a dry spell of 10 years or so (coincided closely with having small kids). Connected with a real-life group about a year ago - my first foray into PF - and just started PbP a couple of months ago - wanted more gaming but needed the flexibility.

And last night I spent 3 hours helping my younger son & 4 friends make up characters, in preparation for the leap from the beginner box (which he GMs!) To the full game. Very cool to get to share RPGs with him.

So I was guessing that GMPM lived in Texas area or UK. That Chloe was Midwest or East Coast. And that Morin was Pacific Northwest. Are you still in Chicago GMPM, if so I live about 5-6 hrs south in Southern Indiana. Grew up in Indianapolis, lived in Seattle for three years, moved back to Indpls. for three yrs., then southern IN the last three yrs.

That cool Morin, hope my girls will get into it. The friend who runs my home game has his 9 and 6 yr olds playing the Beginner Box. He is the one that finally go me into a game, but with our family schedules, we have only played three times in the last 5-6 months.

Enjoying the banter. Been sick for a few days so just reading through everything.

I'm 37, work in finance (I stare at Excel all day) and like GMPM I have an 8-month old. He's sleeping on my lap right now. :) Born and raised near Atlanta. Still live in the area.

I've been playing since I was about 7-8, except for a few years that coincided with college. Did a bunch of playing and DMing for the old RPGA campaigns like Living Greyhawk and Living Arcanis. I was playing 3 or 4 times a week for a few years, even got roped into writing some stuff.

Doing PbP for the same reasons as everyone else - hard to find 4-5 hours on a consistent basis to play in a home game. Wasn't sure I'd like it, but I really enjoy the format.

Great to hear about kids learning the game. Hope I can get my son into it when he's old enough. I'm trying to subtly influence him by making sure Lord of the Rings DVDs are playing whenever mom isn't In the room. She doesn't mind, she just prefers non-fantasy shows and movies. The Cooking channel is fine, but I want him asking Santa for dice and miniatures, not an Easy Bake Oven. :)

Karo, you're not too far off. I live in the SF Bay Area, so not a bad guess, geographically and culture-wise.

I found the things that got my son into PF were these: seeing my shelf of D&D books dating back to 2nd edition - he is way into mythology, so he picked them up and read them all, especially any monster manual like books (I guess I'd add reading lots of mythology to this list); knowing I loved the game and talking about it with him; and starting him off a bit on the beginner box, and then stepping back so he could play it on his own. This last bit was unintentional, but it turned out to be pretty key.

@ Morin Dang, I almost included that. Was just in SF this summer with our family. Wife's college friend lives on Monterey and we speak a week with them. Airline travel with three kids, one being a baby is enough to make me not want to go, but my two oldest love it. I love SF, tried to talk my wife into looking for a job there so we could get back out west, because I absolutely loved living in Seattle.

Have to agree about Montana. My sister used to live in Missoula and we drove from SF to there, saw some lovely country.

But I'm a city kid - grew up in downtown Boston, then Manhattan before heading west, living so far from a subway wouldbe disorienting.

I can read it fine now, and thanks again for putting it together.

We should talk about how we want to do loot division in this group. I'm still used to the old school approach, of items that really only make sense for a single character going to that character, and sometimes rolling a d20 and going in number order picking items. But with your spreadsheet, it's pretty easy to do it by value - except that there's one item - the mithral shirt - that we'd probably rather keep than sell, and it can't be sliced up like a pie. And those potions will certainly be handy, and I could use a nice dagger...

Anyway, some approach based on the value of the items makes sense - what do people think?

We're nice enough here that I think we can claim things without stepping on toes, but we could also keep track of how much each person has claimed in an attempt to keep balance.

That's knife of what I was thinking, and I can keep a sheet on that too. One question, when I was figuring value for the daggers and shortsword, I put full value, would we get full value if we sold it? How have you figured mundane items in the past?

Rogue 3 | Init +4 | Perc +8 | AC:20/ T:16/ FF:14 | HP23/23 | CMB +5 / CMD: 15 | Saves F +4/R +8/W +2

I agree, Chloe, and would be happy to take that approach.

That said, I have little use for a mithral shirt that would fit me like a dress, and I already have 2 masterwork shortswords - but I wouldn't say no to a MW dagger, for those tight spots.

Hey guys, in terms of selling, you can always get half value as long as the settlement you're in can support the cash outlay. If you want to make diplomacy checks or rp with merchants, you might do better or worse depending on the dice and my whimsy, respectively.

Now that we're through the first combat, any comments, questions or concerns? Did I go overboard with the terrain modifiers? As far as the maps go, once I post them, if someone has the time and inclination to add an alphanumeric grid, I would not mind at all.
