Cleo votes for Saila. She knows Ironbriar the best, plus she is lawful good!

Ditto. Of course, she is no doubt charmed/dominated to turn against us!

I finished making the stats for Saila. Nothing optimized, but she's got some interesting tricks up her sleeve. Never made an arcanist before, especially an abjurationist one.

One thing that I did find interesting was to contemplate how an organization of wizards and arcanists would function. I came to the conclusion that they wouldn't research spells. They'd have a communal spellbook that each guard would prepare from at the beginning of their shift.

Welcome back, Brelin. I hope you had a good holidays.

Wilhim's new character is a rogue, so I think his skills will work well.

Cleo is lawful good. The idea of stealing other people's stuff is high on her list of bad things people shouldn't be doing. Yes yes I know she ate a human brain so she shouldn't be pointing fingers :)

While I am fine for characters disliking each other and continuing to be in a party together, I know that caused problems. So I'm having her decide burglary and theft is his past. And he is trying to turn over a new leaf, even if it is out of boredom.

hp 39/43 AC 17

Which isn't true, he'll totally still steal, it's just not his focus anymore.

Yep, gathered that. It is just how I'm having her think so we can start off on the right foot. Until the foot is crushed, hacked apart, served to Aggah for dinner, etc. Then we can happily bicker and punch each other :)

Nope! Which is great, because otherwise this could be a really easy way to lock up Janis.

Janis isn't evil, just selfish in the everyday kind of way. If there was such an alignment, it would be petty evil, since such an alignment doesn't exist he's neutral, you can expect him to do what's best for him and what's best for him is being entertained.

Congrats Brelin! Is this your firstborn?

I think this might be a good time to recruit a new character. That being said, I think we could bring you back later on when you have time. You've been with us since the end of 2017, so I think there will always be a place for you.

Unfortunately, since your backstory was the highlight of this part of the adventure, it will be a little awkward. I'll think of something.

Since Helgarr leaving, I think the frontline has survived pretty well. Wabbit is still an impenetrable force, and Furnok dishes out plenty of damage. I believe our Gentleman (who I'd really love to see his stats linked in his profile, and quick stats in his header) is flexible between melee and short range. From this, I'm not concerned about out frontline, nor upfront damage.

From the themes of this adventure, I do think it's absolutely imperative that we have an arcane magic user who is focused on all things Thassilonian. More and more we will be diving into the ruins of Thassilon, looking at monuments, deciphering magic, interacting with planar events, etc. There will be spellbooks, ancient magical rites, and tons of history. It would be an incredible shame to not have an arcane caster in the group who can explore the history of magic from an age long forgotten.

Brelin didn't quite fit this description, which was fine. I was more than happy to explore Varisian culture through a Cartomancer witch.

I know that Janis the Gentleman is interested in Thassilon, but he's not an arcane caster and can't really take advantage of the themes I'm looking at. I'm actually perfectly happy with the fact that he's bored out of his mind, wants to explore the world, get into trouble, and make a name for himself. It's pretty classic.

I haven't given it a ton of thought yet, but I'd want someone who had the following properties:
- Arcane caster, though I don't really care if they're a full caster or not
- Speaks Thassilonian (not niche, but I think it's important) Draconic would be a plus
- Has at least Arcana, History, and Spellcraft. Planes, dungeoneering, linguistics, and even engineering could have their place. None of these need to be optimized, since there's a ton of resources to boost knowledge checks already written in.
- Has something in their story about a serious interest in Thassilon. They have some sort of academic or scholarly side to them.
- When it comes to damage/buffs/debuffs/utility, I can't really decide what's most important. I can't even decide if versatility is more important. Absolutely all of them are good.

What do you guys think?

HP 71/71 | AC 25 | T 25 | FF 10 | CMD 21| F +13| R +15| W +11 | SPD 30 ft | Init +7 | Perc +9 Panache 3/3, Stunning Fist 1/1, Tattoo 2/3, Rage 6/6, Smite 2/2, LOH 5/5

I'm a traditionalist I guess... I really prefer having a full divine and a full arcane as the core of any group.

And for the arcane I vastly prefer int based wizards or Arcanists. Sorcerers need to be supported by a class that can do spellcraft and knowledge checks well like bards or magi.

Many campaigns depend on successful knowledge checks to reveal lore that makes the campaign interesting or is vitally important figuring out how to proceed

Other than that I'm good with anything debuff/buufer/generalist etc etc

Hp: 46/46 AC: 16+2 CMD: 17 FF: 15 Touch: 11 Fort: 3 Ref: 8 Will: 3 Init: 5 Percep: 11 Character Sheet

I could rewrite a few levels of Janis to wizard and become an arcane trickster next level. (I think) He's geared towards ranged anyways instead of up close abilities and none of his abilities has really come into play yet so it wouldn't be difficult. I could use rays and such to deliver my sneak attack,

And I'm happy to hear that things are Okay brelin, the drop out had me a bit concerned and I'm happy to hear that it's for a wonderful reason instead of something like a death in the family. Congratulations.

When you can't translate the ancient language to figure out how to open the door...just pull out the adamantine dagger and cut through! :)

@Janis. While I don't mind if you want to switch to an arcane trickster, I would like you to refrain from pursuing the 'arcane role' of the group. We definitely have space for a 5th character, and both Cleo and Wabbit have requested a full arcane caster. You can definitely still have an interest in Thassilonian stuff, and cast magic if you'd like, but I'd prefer if you weren't the expert. You're the trickster of this party, the scoundrel.

This is how I generally interpret the party:
Cleo: The ambassador, the moral compass (the one who mediates, and does the 'right' thing)
Furnok: The leader, the dependable (the one who gets s+#~ done)
Wabbit: The protector (the one who keeps those he cares about safe)
Brelin: The soul (the dreamer and storyteller, been missing for awhile)
Janis: The adventurer (the whimsical, curious one)
Aggah/Bacon: The comedic relief
Player 6: The scholar, the problem solver

Even if we have cartomancer Brelin, arcane trickster Janis, and a proper wizard, we could still separate the rolls fairly well. Brelin would have short range touch evocation spells maybe some divination, Janis would likely have low level enchantment and/or illusion magic, and the proper wizard would still have plenty of wiggle room.

So we've got a fairly solid consensus here for full arcane caster, high knowledge skills, intelligence highly preferred
I'll run a recruitment shortly.

Let me know what you think of this.

The Cult of Norgorber is a complex organism, but the God of murder, secrets, greed, and poison would have it no other way. The cult's legacy in Magnimar stretches back to the city's founding over a century ago, when a figure known today in whispers as the Forever Man laid his own foundations within Magnimar's - he ensured that the cult of Norgorber would always have a place in the city's heart, mind, and soul. Today, several branches of the cult function side by side, although not necessarily in full cooperation. The cult of the Skinsaw Man, in particular, has its own goals in mind for the city...

Hello everyone! One of our players just had a newborn baby, and won't be able to play for the foreseeable future. We're looking for a replacement player who can fill a niche we've been missing for quite some time. We would like an arcane caster who's an expert on all things Thassilonian.

Character creation rules:

Level 8 (you do not need to make the entire character in order to make an application, see Application spoiler)
Max hp for the first 3 levels, half+1 for the remainder
20 point buy, final ability scores (not including magic) must be no higher than 20, and no lower than 8
28,000gp please do not spend more than half on a single item
1 trait, and either your choice of a campaign trait or a regular trait, no drawbacks
Core races are preferred. Aasimars and Tieflings are allowed, but do not have access to variant heritages or abilities. If you would like, you could design a half-orc character and call it a half-ogre.
No evil alignments, CN alignment must be willing to work with the group

Exactly what kind of character we're looking for:

We're looking for a full arcane caster who is quite skilled in at least: Arcana, History, and Spellcraft
It's preferred that you're an intelligence based class, primarily for high knowledge skills
You would have a strong desire to learn about Thassilon and explore its ruins
Speaking Thassilonian would be required (you can either take the campaign trait, or put a skill rank in linguistics)
We don't have much of an opinion about damage/buffs/debuffs/utility, etc.

Applications:

Please include in your application:
A rough idea of your character's build. This might include basic stats, expected feats to take, general spell selection, highest skills, a level 1 character sheet, etc. I just want to get a decent idea of how your character would function mechanically.
A summary of where your character fits in the world, how they grew up, what they believe in, what they fear, and how they got to level 8

FAQ:

Variant multiclassing, background skills, and fractional bonuses are allowed
The book does not allow much time for crafting. I try to put some extra time in there, but there's no guarantee.
This game is not PFS legal
Posting requirements are 1/day, however I'm not strict about it. My mental health occasionally demands a day to recuperate, and in the past I've been absent for far longer periods of time. I may choose to bot a character who hasn't posted their turn in combat after 24 hours, but this doesn't always occur.
We are currently on the last bit of book 2. The party is currently level 7 and will hit 8 after the boss encounter.

Our Party:

Wabbit, an indestructible raging Halfling dodge tank paladin. Quite happy go lucky until evil is detected
Cleo, a Halfling cleric of Erastil who tries her best to be peaceful and diplomatic (original character and player)
Furnok, a Human ranger who kicks butt with his lucerne hammer and his cheerful boar companion Bacon (original character and player)
Janis Scarnetti, a Human rogue who's a bored scoundrel, with a practical mindset and interest in Thassilon (original player)
Brelin, our now retired character. She's a cartomancer witch with a Varisian flavour. She may return one day if parental duties lessen, but we have no plans at the moment.
Aggah, who is a homebrewed goblin companion for Cleo. She's extremely chaotic, a bit evil, really dumb, and occasionally hits enemies. She's kind of our lovable mascot.

How I run the game:

While I keep the overarching story the same, I do homebrew the game fairly heavily. I change enemy races and stats, allow the story to flow with a bit more player choice, alter locations, change or create NPCs, and more. I have to admit that sometimes these things don't work out the way I've intended, and some of them worked wonderfully and I'm quite proud of them.
I do run a slightly lower magic setting, with a bit less gold. I prefer having the items you want in a treasure hoard from enemies rather than giving you the gold to buy them. So if you'd like certain items, please ask me and I may include them.
Occasionally the tone gets dark in this adventure path. While I have no intentions of bringing up player traumas and past experiences, I do at times push the line a little further than the average DM. I sometimes choose to describe death with gruesome details, explore a bit more sexuality before fading to black, look at slavery and other human atrocities, and create dark encounters one might expect from eldritch horror. For these reasons I request that you are 18 years old or more, and approach these situations with a certain amount of respect and maturity.

About me:

I'm a Canadian man in his later twenties, with a strong desire to run d&d-like games for a living. I like to explore and experiment on both game systems and stories, and focus on the story that both DM and players are trying to tell. I enjoy researching about topics of the game, even if they have very little relevancy or importance in the great scheme of things. I once was planning to run a pirate game, and spent nearly a week looking into the effects barnacles have on a ship's hull.
I've run Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition at the table 3 times, each with massively different stories. I'm very familiar with books 1 and 2, but have never played beyond them. This forum game has been going since 2015, and yes, the post rate has been horrible at times. I'm proud to say that I'm in a better place, and our pace has returned to something far more respectable. I also run a Hell's Rebels game here with some of the same players.
I watch a lot of Youtube videos regarding d&d. My favourites at the moment are Matthew Colville, MonarchsFactory, and How to be a Great Game Master.

Do I give precedence to halfling characters?

Precedence:
act or fact of preceding.
the right to precede in order, rank, or importance; priority.
the fact of preceding in time; antedating.
the right to precede others in ceremonies or social formalities.
the order to be observed in ceremonies by persons of different ranks, as by diplomatic protocol.
