I gather from the last sentence of backstory that if Volreg is chosen for one of the two tables, Rome would be your preferred start point. I'm interested in seeing where everyone would vote to start if their PC is chosen... Will help me know which content I'll be running initially.

As I've stated earlier, I have certain areas already well developed by previous campaigns, PBP and tabletop: England, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco, Norway, and numerous dungeons and ruins throughout.

That said, if your party wants to steal Columbo's thunder and "discover" the New World 55 years before him (but centuries after the Celts and Vikings, sorry lol), I am an experienced (35 yrs) GM, and with the time to plan afforded by PBP, I can wing it for literally anything you decide to do. This is pure sandbox, no railroads, just juicy hooks like Zeppelin lol...

Well played sir.

MJ66 do you mind if we call you MJ66? It's much shorter :-) I don't remember seeing 'starting points.' But if chosen Wulfgar, while based in Rhoades, sails with the 'knights of Saint John' to fight Barbary corsairs. So he could easily be anywhere on or near the Mediterranean Sea.

Michael Johnson 66 wrote:

This will largely be a sandbox, so I’ll be open to discussion with the 6 players chosen about where they’d like to start out, and what kind of adventures appeal to them. Some possible starting points and beginning objectives include:

Aboard a Portuguese caravel sailing to Morocco to strike against the Arab Slave Trade, or to explore the coast of Africa on behalf of Prince Henry;

In London Town hunting giant rats (and their wererat masters!) infesting the abandoned warehouses and mills along the River Thames;

In Paris hunting undead in the catacombs below the city streets on behalf of the clergy of Notre Dame Cathedral;

In the Black Forest of Germany within the Holy Roman Empire, which is an enchanted forest inhabited by all manner of fey and fairytale creatures, plus werewolves, vampires, wicked witches in giant candy-covered gingerbread houses, titanic beanstalks ascending to cloud castles inhabited by cloud giants, and talking animals;

In Nidaros (Trondheim), Norway, helping defend the city against raiding orcs, goblins, hobgoblins, bugbears, trolls, frost giants, and winter wolves—the evil minions of the ancient white dragon Frostfløyen, who lairs in a glacial cavern within the mountains north of the city;

Something even cooler than any of the above that one of the chosen 6 players comes up with! ;)

Here's a reminder of some possible first adventures, to which I will add:

Hunting undead and seeking the secret subterranean temple-stronghold of the Luciferians in the catacombs under Rome on behalf of Pope Eugene, and doing battle with minions and monsters serving Antichrist Nero;

Exploring and mapping the strange and deadly Underworld, accessed via the legendary Cave of Hercules, near Tangiers in Morocco, either independently as treasure hunters, or as explorers chartered by Prince Henry of Portugal;

Diving (under effect of water breathing spells cast by undine Captain Orlando Van Der Meer) from the magic caravel Kraken in search of the Lost Continent of Atlantis

Nice! I went ahead and reposted start point examples, above...

And MJ66 is fine :-)

If selected, I think a fair bit of Toshio's shtick would go unused if he never sets foot in a city where his growing fame (he hopes) as a composer and organist can be put to the benefit of the party (and all while maintaining a total disconnect between his social and vigilante identities so his status as a social figure isn't tarnished by an adventuring reputation). That said, I don't really have a preference on the part of the world we're in.

Backstory:
Born under an auspicious moon to a creature of the otherworld Mwikali was and is something supernaturally beautiful. Touched by the Gods, The daughter of a trader was given much despite the strangeness. After her Birth in the land of Kanem came a series of wars for many kings fought for the kingdom's throne.

Mwikali, however, did not care for such matters, instead she a noble studied the writings of Arabic scholars while learning to craft clothing for her father and his wife and their children. Despite her supernatural significants her people had given her her stepmother, who was Egyptian could not handle her. Mwikalis' insistence on the existence of the Kanems' ancient gods and spirits were a black spot on this woman's' beliefs. SO Mwikali and her bird Kiku left her fathers house at the age of 8.

Mwikali was a bright young girl with a companion who guided her. Kiku her songbird was a messenger of the divine. The bird spoke to her and educated her on the mysteries of the universe as well as the written word. From this and her interest into sewing and dying clothes the 8-year-old struggled for a few years but found herself making clothes a few months later in Cairo.

Quickly she rose to some prominence as she was a free laborer, one who secretly would aid in freeing slaves of other Africans. It was her lot in life to save her people from the oppression of others be it physical bondage or spiritual bondage. Such a battle lead her to her first crime at age 12. One that made her slay a Cleric of Muhammad.

This led her to her first brand, the chains, and the lash. The forces of Allah sought to break her mentally and physically, but she endured. From age 12 to 14 she was the pet of slavers seeking to break her down and defeat her. Instead, she grew stronger, learning to better defend herself by learning from not only her secret meetings with Kiku, but her fellow slaves. In time she finally let her power out, unleashing a torrent of flame in the cells burning herself free as well as her fellow captives.

After that, she managed to find her way from Cairo and onto a ship headed to Greece. There she got onto a caravan and headed into Europe proper, Her stalwart guide Kiku leading her there through the will of her mysterious patrons,She would forever change the role of not only her people but those of this continent.

As for how she didn't know all she knew was her sense of style was the rage for many noble women she encountered. Her mastery over the cloth and the exotic look made many seek out her crafts. Which in the end allowed her to continue her work.

Atleast something like this. Thinking she is driven by the Ancient Elements of Africa who see the possible future of the continent's people and are using her as a mystical conduit to change it. She has had to endure leaving her nation, her people, her family to a foreign god. Has had to endure the shackles of oppression in Cairo as a slave, and I expect worse for when she actually gets envovled in Europe proper!

If chosen, Johann would be interested in seeing a city, Rome perhaps, as he has spent his entire life in the Black Forest. A fish out of water scenario for him.

So here's my orc.

As you'll see in "a response", he's set up for one of the Portugal hooks but he could very easily be switched to another starting point (I just have to change that one short letter).

Holland leads the rest of Europe musically at this time, with such Dutch maestros as Guillaume DuFay and Gilles Binchoit expanding the wondrous new concept of counterpoint, which even now is blossoming into a complex and beautiful polyphony hitherto unknown to Europe. (Parallel fifths in modal church hymns was an early precedent, of course...)

That said, Toshio need not go to Holland to be recognized for his growing fame as composer and musician; any city throughout the globe will have noble courts eager to patronize new and upcoming talents.

It did seem that Rome was pretty big with hooks, but also Sevelle is pretty close to Portugal, so in all aspects, land or sea travel are both good options. Just nothing too far south, as I believe the Moors wouldn't like Volreg all too much, haha.

Hey Critzible, Wulfgar (and the Knights of St. John) free slaves from North Africa, if were selected do you want to put something together? Mwikali could be on a ship that Wulfgar is sailing on. It could put is in whatever port our adventure starts in...

So tell me, was Ferro Maljinn, any Influence on Mwikali?

Edit
Another odd question, how many of the characters submitted were slaves of the Ottoman's at one point in time or another?

Might be a way to put one team together...yeah, any ideas to get in the game works for me :-)

Grand Lodge

That sounds cool Wulfgar. As for the Ferro thing, didn't even know about her. It's pretty scary the similarities though.

I freed myself!

Thanks. He's not as enmeshed in the setting as the Jewish mystic would have been, but I thought doing the letters like that would at least ground him in the setting some.

Hahaha! Well, at least he'd level up quick if he survived in the Moorish South... :-)

So far, it seems very likely that team 1 will start in or on their way to Rome...

Team 2 seems likely to be on one of the Portugal/Morocco quests, either exploring the Dark Continent of Africa, exploring the Underworld beneath Morocco, or striking against the Arab Slave Trade...

How does this suit everyone?

Either of those would work for me. My background is all set for table 2, and could very easily be tweaked for table 1 (Just have the archbishop send him to Rome instead of Portugal)

Quinlan has been adventuring for a year or two. He doesn't really have a destination in mind so I could justify him being in any number of places.

Considering where he comes from I think Rathe would do best in the Rome adventure. But I have to admit the others sound pretty intriguing also. I'd like to point out if we went to Wallachia we could interact with a very young Vlad the Impaler :)

Wallachia is thick with wolves (and werewolves), and known to be plagued by vampires...

I recommend waiting til 5th level at least...

Portugal/Morocco sounds cool

Hello me and my wife are interested. If Rome involves undead or the lime it’s probably be best. Our characters are loosely and I mean loosely based off of the main characters from Chrono Crusade. I’d like to play a phantom blade spiritualist. (Spiritualist Occult Adventures and phantom blade archetype occult anthology). She is undecided at the moment more info to come after work.

I'm not familiar with Chrono Crusade, but your phantom blade spiritualist sounds cool! Go ahead and flesh it out and post it, please!

BTW, I posted this LINK TO MY NOVELLA, Apocalypse Anon: The Lucky Fools, earlier in this thread, but... What kind of self-published author would I be if I didn't take frequent opportunities for shameless plugs? (I know, the kind that is less annoying than the self-plugging kind lol...)

Yeah especially combating against the Arab Slave Trade and the European advances

FYI, I have set up the starting scenes for both tables in Gameplay. Take a look, but no posting until I open Gameplay to player posts on or a little before April 1st, please! :-)

dang... I really like that setup (for the Rome based table)... can we apply separately to the two tables? I like my freed orcish slave from Spain for the Portugal/Morocco stuff, but I think I'd like to build something different to be considered for the Rome campaign, if that's ok? I'm thinking something a little VanHelsing-esque... maybe like a divine tracker ranger with VMC paladin or something... someone's who's part of a religious order that's trained him to fight undead and other supernatural horrors

Yes, go ahead and submit for both, but depending on how many good submissions I have, the likelihood of being at both tables will probably not be high...

I like the idea for a monster hunting holy order, or maybe a noble family devoted to it, like Castlevania's Belmonts...

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Yeah- my intention wasn’t to try to grab two spots, I just had different ideas for the two games. And, yes, that’s exactly the kind of thing I was thinking.

edit: I mean... I would play at both tables if you offered, but that wasn’t the goal.

Nope, the other table, table 2, is Portugal--> Morocco.

This table, table 1, is Rome.

After I've picked 12 PCs, I will send private messages to those players, telling them which table to report to.
