So, just so I understand, at 5th, 9th, 15th, and 19th level instead of a feat it'll be a gestalt level if we choose?
And a wizard sounds pretty good to me.
Yes, that makes more sense than my incoherent ramblings from the other night. :-)

Nathanial Torken |

Sounds good to me. I'll probably go with the feat tho. Ready to move forward!

the Shining Host |

I'll be away from the boards for the next two days. Get everything up and running and updates will com that night! :-)

Soren Marsailles |

I haven't had a chance to update Soren's sheet, but I know exactly what I'm changing. I'll get to it sometime tomorrow, now that I have WiFi again. Also, I'm ready to get going in Gameplay so I'm looking forward to your updates!

the Shining Host |

If not tonight (my Vampire posting may take upwards of two hours) then tomorrow night.

the Shining Host |

Dammit, sorry it'll be tomorrow or Sunday, the wife ate up too much of my time this evening.

the Shining Host |

Sorry for the delay here guys, RL has been sucking up a lot of time lately. I will get this back on track no later than Thursday!

Grumble Jack |

Lothryn, if you're looking for an avatar that looks more like a person, but still has that Ifrit flare (see what I did there), there's an Outsider in the avatar list that's a close up of a really tan looking guy with glowing red eyes. It's one of my favorites.
Also, I feel like Lothryn hasn't gotten a lot of screen time in the game so far. I think we have a pretty good idea of the personalities and behaviors of the rest of the group, but Loth is still kind of a mystery. I'd love to see more of what he's like.
Anything the rest of us can do to help give him some time to shine?

![]() |

I feel like, as an oracle, he could do a bit more talking. Maybe make some mysterious comments here and there. I think a big problem is that we just got finished with a lot of combat, and he's not set up as a real blaster-type just yet so his combat skills are a bit more lacking than the rest of us.

the Shining Host |

Hey everyone. Storyteller shadow asked me to post. I'll do my best to catch up with what has been going on :)
Don't worry Alice you are coming in fresh, I'll have a back post up for you once the characters get on board to give you insight into how you are involved!

![]() |

Oh, does anybody want any alchemical items crafted before we start? And GM, will the good cardinal supply our crafting materials for those of us that craft?

Lothryin Harad |

Yeah sorry about that guys, I am very new to the role play element that is present in the pbp boards and am working on getting better at it. In my rl group we focus much more on the play aspect with some role play but much less than I see here. I will look into that avatar and I will begin to post more and show more of the characteristics and personality that makes up Lothyrin. I am working on setting him up more as a blaster and have found a way to increase his potential through the crosblooded sorcerer.

the Shining Host |

Oh, does anybody want any alchemical items crafted before we start? And GM, will the good cardinal supply our crafting materials for those of us that craft?
He will provide 200 GP worth of materials per Villain.

Lothryin Harad |

Here is what I had in mind for Lothyrin when I created him. I imagine him as a very Charismatic blasting oracle. He is a manipulative character and will use any one or thing to further his own agenda which is now dictated by Asmodeus and the Cardinal. He is impulsive and rash, quick to anger. He will help friends and is very loyal unless crossed and shows little mercy to enemies. He is a blasting oracle who will focus on fire and fireball later on. He will buff allies and debuff enemies and will use curative magics on the party when needed but would like to not be considered a heal bot. My combat effectiveness will be behind many of you for long time but I hope to make that up in the usefulness of divine spells. As for relations to the rest of the party. He is intimidated by Grumble (Who wouldn't be) but respects him as a brave and powerful warrior and will offer his support, He finds Vandour the one he has the most in common with and finds his charming air amusing. Soren is a figure he looks up to for her never wavering devotion to Asmodeus and her unflinching demeanor in the face of combat. Nathaniel he is slightly worried about due to the nature of his psyche and fears that it may cause problems further on. This is a rough idea of where I want him to go, but any ideas would be welcome.

Alchemist's Fire: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15 Didn't make the DC, so no progress. Have the Alchemical Adept trait, so I don't lose any material.
Tanglefoot Bag: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30x25=750. Not quite double the price in silver, so took a week to make. Spent 166 silver.
Iron Pellet Grenade: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13 Damn. Rolled a 1, lost 83 silver of material.
Iron Pellet Grenade: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23 Didn't make the DC, no lost material.
Bottled Lightning: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22 Didn't make the DC, no lost material.
Acid Flask: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31x20=620. Took 6 times less time to make it. Spent 33 silver.
Acid Flask: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28x20=560. Finished 5 times faster. Spent 33 silver.
Alchemist's Fire: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25x20=500. Finished twice as fast. Spent 66 silver.
Tanglefoot Bag: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17 No lost material.
Fusing Alchemist's Fire with Acid Flask: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28 Now have one vial that acts as both Alchemist's Fire and an Acid Flask.
Alchemist's Fire: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28x20=560. Made twice as fast. Spent 66 silver.
Tanglefoot Bag: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28x25=700. Made in a week. Spent 166 silver.
Bottled Lightning: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27x25=675. Took a week to make. Spent 133 silver.
Spent a total of 81 gold 2 silver.

Loth-
That's good stuff. It gives a good idea of what our characters would have seen so far.
As far as roleplay goes, the best advice I can give is to engage with the other players as much as possible, and try to advance the story in some small way every time you post. The worst thing a player can do in a PbP game is have their character's impact on what happens be "neutral." The second worst thing a player can do is to expect other players to engage with them first.
PbP is slow, which means we have the opportunity to really get into the minutiae of what a character thinks. Even if the character is not directly addressing other characters, showing the players who your character is with internal monologue works well.
Right now, character motivations and reactions to what is happening are pretty clear. Grumble and Soren are zealots. They feel right at home in all this madness. Vandour is a little out of his depth, but rolling with it all well and kind of enjoying the ride. Nate is cracking at the seams and trying not to let anyone see. Morena is conflicted, but slowly giving in to her darker side. None of those things came from things the characters have directly said. They've come from descriptions.
It sounds like you have a good handle on who Loth is. Try to add his thoughts and body language into your posts, and pick a character or two who he's becoming comfortable with and talk to them. Nothing draws out who someone is like banter
Hope that helps

Morana Soto |

The inner monologue is one of my favorite things about the PbP style of gaming. PbP does allow for a lot more time to be spent on the individual characters.
I am assuming that the 200gp could be used for any crafting. I am getting the craft wondrous items feat.
Sleeves of Many GarmentsDC11: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25 Yay! So that was 100 gp. I know I want some alchemical items and I will get a list later.

![]() |

Like I said, just let me know what kind of Alchemical doodads you guys want. As long as you front the money, of course.

the Shining Host |

Read two pages of this thread. The game is mostly RP. It should give you a feel for role play posting I think as you can see the characters and NPC's engage one another in pretty meaningful ways despite an absence of combat. I think in almost 8,000 posts I have had four maybe five combats.
Some people use the inner monologue style and some do not. I would do what feels comfortable for you.
Consider Loth's goals and the goals of the party, your posts will generally be about one or the other :-)

Morana Soto |

Air crystals DC is not listed. But we are getting on a boat. 2 alchemist fire and one acid. That should be 100gp.

![]() |

Actually, that's only 15 gold 5 silver (66x2 silver for the Alchemist's fire, 33 silver for the acid flask).
Alchemist's Fire: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32x20=640. Made 3 times faster. Spent 66 silver.
Alchemist's Fire: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26x20=520. Made twice as fast. Spent 66 silver.
Acid Flask: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15x15=225. Made twice as fast. Spent 33 silver.
Also, looked up the air crystals (in the Pathfinder Society Field Guide). They are crystals that are grown, not made, unfortunately, so no crafting of those for any of us.

Soren Marsailles |

I'm going to make some more paper cartridges, but the guest house I'm at is about to shut off the WiFi so I doubt I'll have time to look up how many I can make or the DC to make them before it goes out; I'll update with that tomorrow.
As for learning the PbP role-playing stuff, I understand where you're coming from. It's a very different beast from doing it at the table, and if your table's a little more combat-focused it can be a real culture shock on the forums. Because of the pace, role playing is a lot more nuanced and common than it tends to be in person. As someone who's going to school to learn how to write for a living, I'll give you a few tips.
1. You learn just as much about characters by their mannerisms as you do by what you say. Some people talk to themselves, others compulsively check their possessions or weapons, others might act very differently depending on who they're interacting with. Certainly feel free to tell us things directly, but always think about how you can show who a character is by their actions, too.
2. Don't be afraid to not give the whole story. Bits and pieces of things about a character are interesting, and intrigue us towards learning more. We don't need three pages of backstory all at once when some tidbits every once and a while will do. Think about how a situation might reasonably remind your character of something in their past.
3. Have fun with it! Banter is a great way to learn about characters and their personalities. Serious interactions might have consequences, but side conversations during down-time, traveling, or combat can be interesting and tell us a lot about your character; even if you don't participate. After all, a character who quips during combat is clearly a different man than the one who is a silent killing machine.

Morana Soto |

How is it so cheap for you to craft Vaundour? Also I am sad about the air crystals. Could you add to the list Anti-plauge and anti-toxin? extra saves sounds like a good idea.
Lothryin I completely agree with the others. I understand and sympathize as well. I remember my first PbP character, I am still playing him actually. We liked our musical goblins so much that we are on our third GM to keep playing with them.
Don't feel pressured to do to much. Do what feel natural and have fun. That is the important thing. You seem to have a good idea of where you are taking him and that matters for your little fire monster :)
Since you said ideas would be welcome I will ask a few questions because that is who I am.
Do you have any thoughts on his backstory? If any of that has been mentioned in earlier game play then ignore me. I ask because to me the backstory tends to be an important part of any of the PCs I play and in the game I GM. There is a lot that can come from a backstory. If you have no ideas on it though that is fine. Sometimes it can be fun to figure it out as the game progresses. My players have done that and we have had a blast.
You picked the blackened Oracle curse. What caused his hands to black like that? In such a way that is resistant to healing.
Also what sorcerer bloodline did you pick?

![]() |

It's in the crafting rules. Convert the item's gold piece price into silver pieces then pay 1/3 of the silver price in raw materials to craft it.
Antiplague: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29x25=725. Made in a week. Spent 166 silver.
Antitoxin: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21 No progress.
Antitoxin: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17 No progress.
Well, I got you the antiplague. Rolls just kept getting lower, and started running out of in-game time to craft.

Lothryin Harad |

Grumble you might want to consider having a weapon blanch made of ghost touch or adamantium.
Is there any chance I might be able to get a frost ward gel, a fire ward gel, and a soul soap. I honestly don't understand the rules and am sorry if that isn't possible.

![]() |

Soul soap is a woundrous item, and I don't have the appropriate feat for that. As for the gels, you can have one or the other. They are 150 gold each, and you only have 200 available unless someone decides to loan you a hundred gold for crafting.

![]() |

Ignore my last post. Wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. It'll be 50 gold apiece to make them.
Fire Ward Gel: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27x25=675. Made in a week. Spent 50 gold.
Ice Ward Gel: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26x25=650. Made in a week. Spent 50 gold.
Still can't make the soul soap, though.

Grumble Jack |

Grumble you might want to consider having a weapon blanch made of ghost touch or adamantium.
I like weapon blanches. Good idea. An adamantine weapon blanch would let grumble pretty much obliterate a door or wall.
Soren should think about Blanches also, you get a lot more bang for your buck when applying them to ammo.

Grumble Jack |

I remember from other versions of this game that I've been in that at some point the cardinal gives everyone items that work as Hats of Disguise.
Will that be happening in this game, or should I have Grumble look into purchasing one for himself? I can't see him being able to operate in Ballentyne without one. (Vandour and Soren too, to a lesser degree)

Soren Marsailles |

Hmm, that's a good point. It also means I wouldn't have to spend money getting ammunition in various materials either; considering that I'm probably going to put enchantments on some of my ammunition and that would get very pricey when it comes to things with resistances and such. Thanks for reminding me those exist... not that I should need it, since players in one of my games JUST bought them to deal with a werewolf.
Also, Soren probably wouldn't need a Hat of Disguise; she's very human looking except for the tail, which she can hide pretty easily. When I originally made the character, the racial trait so that I don't need Disguise checks to pass as human wasn't yet available, and I never really thought to ask to take it. I'm not even sure I can, it might conflict with my other racial traits.

![]() |

I can make all but the ghost salt blanch. Not sure what book it's in and the DC isn't listed in the d20pfsrd site. Will look through my books when I get home for them.
And not only would I need a disguise, I'd need some way to deal with my light blindness racial trait.

Grumble Jack |

That's ok. The places we're heading aren't likely to have incorporeal foes. I think we can afford to wait on the ghost salt.

![]() |

Mmkay. And it turns out I have the Brew Potion feat that I thought I lost on my class switch up, so I'm gonna be looking into that.

Morana Soto |

Soul Soap DC 6: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21 One soul soap for you :)

Morana Soto |

I have never played with weapon blanches before but I like being prepared as well. Plus it is fun to pull out a random item and surprise people with it.
I cannot think of anything less that i want currently.

Grumble Jack |

Here's some fun alchemist stuff I've seen used in other games. Feel free to steal them.
1) Use a little adhesive or string to attach a Tindertwig to a Smokestick so the twig automatically lights the smokestack when activated. Put it into a Spring Loaded Wrist Sheath. Now, you can pop it into your hand as a swift action, light it as a move, drop it for free, and "ninja vanish" in the 10 cloud of smoke. (Notice you still have your standard action left).
1.a) Attach the tinder twig/smoke stick to an arrow. Drawing ammunition is a free action. Activate it as a move action, fire it as a standard.
2) Mix contact poison into a tanglefoot bag (this works great for nets too).
3) Burst Jars are amazing. They Deafen with no save. Hit a caster with one, and they just got themselves a 20% spell failure chance.
4) Ghast Retch is a no-save Sicken effect. That's a handy penalty to saves and attacks.
5) Unstable Accelerant is always good. handy to have when we really need to go all out.
6) Shard Jel with mixed in poison is fun in narrow hallways.
7) Alchemical Glue plus Glue Accelerant is great for sealing doors or plugging locks.
8) Blood Boiling Pills are an 8 hour +2 initiative bonus.
9) With a Hybridization Funnel you can mix two splash weapons. The combinations are many, and all cool.

Soren Marsailles |

I once played a Strix that would fight by dropping poisoned nets on people from above... good times. If they allow 3.5 material, another good combination is Liquid Ice with Razor Ice Powder; mix them together in a bag to create ice that automatically deals damage per square you move through, and counts as difficult terrain and counts as a Grease spell.
If you want to get really nasty, though? When I was playing through Skulls and Shackles, I played a homebrewed hybrid class of Gunslinger/Alchemist. I would craft Alchemist's Fire all the time, as I figured setting ships ablaze would be a useful combat tactic. I didn't use them all that often since my bombs were better, but I figured they'd be better than nothing at all. However, once we made the mistake of attacking the wrong ship; a vessel had trained a manticore to defend themselves, and we were outgunned. I downed an extract of True Strike and then tied the bag of flasks around the end of a ballista bolt, and then fired it directly into the Manticore's stomach. I dealt 93 damage as a level four character, and the GM stared at me with disbelief before declaring the entire vessel, upon seeing their greatest defense be blown to smithereens, promptly surrendered to me.

![]() |

I'm in another WotW campaign as a goblin alchemist, using the grenadier and winged marauder archetypes, who fights by either throwing bombs from the air or shooting his shortbow with various alchemical items attached to the arrows.
