GM Aumakua |
At Alledueces suggestion you move away from the creature and find the stench and its effects fade away after about a minute. You carefully move Amigail between two of and Nhilune looks her over. Amigail looks pale from all the blood she has lost but you feel she will live. You also realize that she may have been further infected with something by that hideous creature. You are unsure how long the paralysis will last however.
Nhilune make a heal check to assist Amigail with her fortitude check versus disease.
Amigail make a fortitude check please
Amigail Trentwell |
I believe this is the correct penalty modifier.
Fortitude Save (Con Penalty): 1d20 + 5 - 3 ⇒ (2) + 5 - 3 = 4
Nhilune Rilyn'rahel |
Nhilune has one use left of her remedies today. I'll apply it now.
Nhilune heaves a sigh of relief to find the woman still alive. The last thing they needed was more death this evening. But she did seem to have contracted something else from that ooze. Not surprising considering the filth it lived in.
Shaking her head while digging into her belt pouch, Nhilune pulls out the last remedy. She really was being stretched thin tonight, certainly more than she'd expected to be.
"Apologies for the taste. And the aftertaste," she mumbled under her breath as she gently pressed the remedy into Amigail's mouth.
Profession(herbalist): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27 vs DC of the new disease
As a standard action, the herb witch can administer a remedy to herself or a creature within reach. This consumes the remedy, and the herb witch attempts a Profession (herbalist) check against the save DC of any one disease or poison currently afflicting the consumer. If the check is successful, the effect immediately ends. If the disease or poison doesn't allow saving throws, the remedy is ineffective.
Lanarial |
Lanarial looks around while Nhilune tends to Amigail, searching for threats and clues to where they needed to go. He didn't want to be surprised while they were already weakened...
Perception +4; low-light vision.
GM Aumakua |
After a few minutes Amigail is able to regain the use of her muscles, but is still weakened from her ordeal with the jelly. Too tired to care she drinks down Nhilune's foul draught.
As this is going on Lanarial you do not see anything coming from behind or ahead of the group. The walkway continues south and remains 5 feet in width. Alledueces signals to continue marching in that direction when you are ready.
Amigail Trentwell |
When Amigail is finally able to move and speak again, she sputters her thanks through the foul aftertaste of Nhilune's remedy. She admits that the ooze's blood draining has weakened her but claims to be willing to press on, at least a little further, if the others are game.
Lanarial |
When the group is ready, Lanarial will conjure the four dancing lights to move ahead of the party, illuminating the passage 30 feet in front of them.
GM Aumakua |
Dargorath: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Lanarial: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Alledueces: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7
Lothenlieth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Nhilune: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Rats: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Amigail attempts to stand and after a couple of minutes of rubbing her legs she nods that she is ready to continue. You all form up into your marching order and continue down the tunnel. With Lanarial's dancing lights giving you adequate illumination the journey through the sewers is fairly mundane. That is probably best having just come out of your battle with the effluvium jelly.
From the back of the line, Alledueces calls for the group to halt after about a half of an hour of walking so that he can look over the map again. While the passage has only provided you with one option in terms of directions and given the state of things erring on the side of caution might not be a bad thing. Nodding in satisfaction he calls for the group to move again.
As you are about to make you way along the sewer tunnel again, the babbling flow of sewer water is slowly drowned out by an ever-increasing series of pips, squeaks, and chaotic skittering. Suddenly, a massive pack of sewer rats appears behind you, quickly and inexorably moving toward you.

Party's Turn to Act
Map link updated. Using the same map for this encounter
Dargorath |
Dargorath launches an arrow at the pack of sewer rats, then moves away from them, in front of Amigail.
I can't move my token, no comp, sorry. Someone help me move?
Bow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
DMG: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Please inform me if I need to confirm the critical.
"If you're not shooting or attacking them, head away from the rats to give the rest a clear line of fire." He informs the party. "You have no idea how much of a pain it is to shoot at something trying to avoid the person blocking your way."
How big are those rats?
GM Aumakua |
I can move your token Dargorath. The rats are all regular sized. It's a mass of hundreds of rats.
Dargorath launches an arrow but it has little effect on the mass of rats.
Amigail Trentwell |
Eh--I'll burn Ami's free action.
"Anyone got magic or alchemist's fire to deal with these? Or do we have to do it the hard way?"
Lanarial |
Lanarial pulls a medium-sized glass bottle from his belt pouch, moves towards the swarm, waits until it is 20 feet away, and throws it at the front of the swarm. "Fire in the hole!" he yells as he releases the bomb... Throwing alchemist's fire at the swarm.
Ranged touch attack at double range distance: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 3 - 2 = 11
Direct hit fire damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
2nd round fire damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Nhilune Rilyn'rahel |
Nhilune wastes no time in moving to the back of the line as requested. She's glad to put as much space between herself and the rats as possible. She considers trying to give the rats the old stink eye, but it never worked on the ones back home so why even waste the time trying here...
Position updated on the map.
GM Aumakua |
Amigail did you want to do anything?
Lothlienth looks to the others in group for suggestions he watches as the others move back and sees Alledueces standing in front, first to take the brunt of the rats attack. With a sigh he runs ahead and prepares to face the rats.
Lothlienth readies an attack
As the squealing rats draw closer a flask flies from Lanarial's hand aimed at the swarm of rats. While the flask misses the rats it does impact against the wall beside them causing the flame to jump off the wall and burning some of the rats.
Lanarial you caught a break with an 8 on the d8. 1 pt of splash damage to the rats
Amigail Trentwell |
Amigail moves past Lothlienth and, already covered with filth from the sewage jelly/ooze, drops into the nasty water (at square G/10), hoping it's not too deep.
This assumes that she'd still be able to attack the rats from the canal. If the ledge is like 5 feet above the water, please move her a couple squares past Lanarial so she'll take the brunt of the swarm and still allow him to attack next round.
GM Aumakua |
Amigail: Yup the ledge is about 5 ft above the water so jumping wouldn't allow you to attack the rats. Did you want to ready an attack?
Amigail Trentwell |
Amigail: Yup the ledge is about 5 ft above the water so jumping wouldn't allow you to attack the rats. Did you want to ready an attack?
Sure.
Amigail Trentwell |
Amigail grits her teeth as the swarm scurries upon her, hacking away at the rodents with her falcata.
mwk falcata (IC): 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 1 = 14 forslashing damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
GM Aumakua |
With a heavy grunt Amigail swings her falcata into the mass of rats killing several of them but not stopping them from engulfing both her and Lothlienth in black fur, whiskers and tails. Lothlienth tries to skewer a rat but his rapier is ineffective against this type of opponent.
Amigail and Lothlienth take bites: 1d6 ⇒ 3 points of damage. Also please make a Fortitude check DC 12
Lothlienth Fort Chk: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
ROUND 2
Everyone. Your Turn.
GM Aumakua |
#1: Error on my part. Dargorath please make a confirm roll for your crit. I thought I read piercing doesnt affect swarm of this size but it does sorry.
#2: Making an attack for Lothlienth
ROUND 1 attack
Lothlienth rapier: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 8 + 1 = 26
damage: 1d6 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 1 = 12
Amigail Trentwell |
Fort Save (Con Damage): 1d20 + 5 - 3 ⇒ (11) + 5 - 3 = 13
Only when she's nearly overcome by a wave of nausea does Amigail concede how stupid it was to try to withstand the swarming rats in her weakened condition. Still, the young woman won't back down from a fight. Moving back out of the swarm (Square H9, maybe?), Ami turns and again slashes at the rats in a wide, low, arc.
Assuming continued/lingering Inspire Courage from Alledueces; if not, subtract 1 from rolls.
mwk falcata (IC): 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 1 = 21 for slashing damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
GM Aumakua |
Amigail you are correct thank you for making me aware. Please make your aoo from round 1 when the rats enter your square. I usually don't use swarms in my campaigns but this is good to know
Neverending ROUND 1!
Lothlienth's aoo vs rat swarm: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
damage: 1d6 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 5 + 1 = 9
Amigail Trentwell |
AoO: mwk falcate (Inspire Courage +1): 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 1 = 25 for slashing damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Yeesh on Amigail's damage rolls.
GM Aumakua |
doh! Swarms lol alright lets resume. Dargorath don't wory about your confirmation. I'll get these right evenutally.
Dargorath |
Thats why I made no attempt to confirm crit. Presumptious it is to add in player knowledge on something I have not made a knowledge check for.
Dargorath releases another arrow at the rat swarm.
Cover factored in
Bow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Dmg: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
GM Aumakua |
With that last shot Dargorath is able to scatter the last of the rats.
Assessing the damage the rats caused you all manage a positive grunt and keep on moving south yet with a cautious glance back to the north every now and again.
The night has been long enough and you can already feel like there is lot more to be done before you set to resting.
You pause after about five minutes when you see a light up ahead. You can't tell what the source is but it seems to be moving away from you.
Amigail Trentwell |
Amigail stops when she sees the light ahead and turns to face the others. She points to the party's own light sources (which I'm assuming our trusty spellcasters are renewing as necessary).
"Do we give chase?" she asks in a whisper. "If whoever it is happens to turn around, they're going to notice all our lights."
Nhilune Rilyn'rahel |
Nhilune gives a short nod of agreement with the others, though it's unlikely anyone saw what with being single file and all. She was glad to see the others had confidence where she lacked it. She was pretty unsure of everything that'd happened tonight so far and delving deep into the sewers wasn't helping her nerves.
She kept her dancing lights up around the party, hoping to illuminate any immediate danger before it found them.
Lanarial |
Lanarial talks quietly with Nhilune. "Since we both have the ability to cast dancing lights, why don't we each form a faintly glowing, vaguely humanoid shape to move ahead of us. This will provide some light for us to see by and present false targets if they notice us and want to attack."
Amigail Trentwell |
To test the speed of who/whatever is ahead of them, Amigail moves forward at a decent clip while trying to remain stealthy (moving at a speed of 25 ft. [50 ft. double move] while using Stealth).
Stealth (fast): 1d20 + 2 - 5 ⇒ (11) + 2 - 5 = 8
Do we seem to be catching up or falling further behind? Are we spotted?
GM Aumakua |
The light moves on ahead and Amigail quickens her pace to catch up. However with Alledueces in the back you watch as the party line seems to lengthen with Amigail moving faster than Alldueces can keep up. After moving about a 100 feet the light source seems to stop moving for a moment and then continues on.
You can only assume that at your current movement you will eventually catch up with the light source as it makes no attempt to quicken its own pace.
GM Aumakua |
As yo move down the walkway towards this light source you watch as it suddenly starts moving in your direction.
GM Aumakua |
As you move within 60 feet of the light source you see a woman before you. Even dressed in her dark colors you are able to spy the breastplate she is wearing. In one hand she carries a torch and in the other she carries a large scythe. As the torch flickers she stands before you quiet, observing...
Amigail Trentwell |
"You're wandering in the sewers beneath Cassomir," Amigail replies, skepticism evident in her tone. "The real question is: Why are you here?"
