Another thing that might be worth checking for when you get a chance is a "Suit locker" next to the airlock. There may be a better class of vac suit in there. ;)

Yes!

And any diagnostic screen. There might be valuable info there.

Ideally, we should hook up whatever power source we can find to the mainframe and the comms, to give us remote access even after we left the ship.

@Ziirkaa, good idea!

@mdt, is what Ceres is saying possible? How likely is it that comms would be secured and encrypted?

Possible, yes. Doable, to be determined. The ship is heavily damaged.

In other words, it depends on Holt's rolls.

Annra, the training can be taken by you, of course, but it's a crash course and it won't give the feat. What it does is activate the feat for those who trained using fake suits previously.

But, she can still do the training to get the feat herself later.

Just a quick note - Sivert measures absorbed (equivalent) dose. It is not time dependent.

X Sivert could be alot of radioactivity over a short burst, or very little but from prolonged exposure.

Becquerel measures activity, ie current emissions.

X Becquerel would tell us how radioactive something is right now.

A suit or vessel might be rated for Sivert, if it contains some sort of buffer that absorbs radiation and then gets 'filled' (like active coal absorbing particles in a gas mask).

A scanner would certainly inform about either Bq (absolute activity) or perhaps Sivert per hour. If it just measured Sivert, it would start at zero and accumulate upwards.

And just so we can settle the debate now, is it more important for me to get the manuals I was talking about or to try and repair the comms and get the computers back online?

Why are you saying it is 2x the armor check penalty? Did I miss that somewhere?

Where does it say x2? On the equipment table in my book all I see is the -5 penalty. Under the Armor Proficiency (Vac Suit) feat it doesn't say anything about x2 either. I don't see anything on the skills table that says Vac Suits impose x2 the penalty either.

EDIT: Hey, Annara, please don't delete posts after someone has replied to them. It makes it a little hard to follow conversations.

Also, any vote on going for comms or manuals first?

I've read the campaign background, only thing i'm not sure is if the char is ensign or enlisted, or if i need not bother with titles or ranks entirely.
Now i'ld need a brief summary of the last 50 or so posts in gameplay,i know the group were investigating a crashed ship, but i couldn't read everything.
I don't know how kasumi is introduced either.
Sorry for the whining.

things to ask the AI, my vote
1: where are the local systems jump points
2: all info on jump drive capable space craft designs
3: local systems and news update
4: what happened to the ship?

|12/20 Stamina | 11/11 LB | Def AC:11/T:11/FF:10 | R:3/W:6/F:1 | Init +1 | Per:+2 | Academic 3 / Navy 2

Things to ask the AI:
#1:
I suggest instead a download of a schematic of this ship. It is possible that some of the subcraft survived the accident and may be salvageable. IF we can get a map that shows the fastest way to a landing bay/docking port that seems intact... it could be a suicide mission, or a new ship for Telthani. We don't know for certain that this ship came from one of the old jump points or intended to jump here.

#2:
Navigation data and sensor logs for some time period... Say the last 2-3 weeks before the ship showed up in system. This is a good way to get data about the jump points because I don't think the ship has a way of knowing the jump points except by coming out of them.

#3:
Local news and Mail seems like a good idea.

#4:
What happened to the ship + any logs we can get

#5:
I vote against drive capable spacecraft designs, because a warship is unlikely to have useful data about star-ship design other than it's own and it's subcraft. Agree that we should grab whatever engineering data we can, but that should be at the bottom of the list after improving our odds of getting usable artifacts.

Female Lieutenant Commander [2 Professional / 1 Academic / 2 Navy*] [Stamina 18/11 | Lifeblood: 11/11 | AC: 15 | T: 12 | FF: 13 | Fort: 0 | Ref: 4 | Will: 10 | Init: +2 | Per: +4 | Comb. Eng.: +11] [Easy Recall: 1/1 | Inspired: 1/1]

We should probably be careful how we phrase our queries as well. They may be subject to overly literal interpretations, or the AI may not be fully aware of the current location or condition of the ship.

Either way, it might work out best if someone with good computer skills is the one to interface with it.

As for my vote for the questions:

1) Ship logs, especially navigation logs, are probably a good bet for both figuring out what happened and how the ship got here. Asking for a dump of all logs and records might just get us everything in one query.

2) Engineering data on this ship and all of its sub-modules might be able to give us a map and some information about their jump drives. Yes, we're hoping to find some of that anyway, but two possible sources are better than one.

3) If the systems are operational enough (which we might be able to find out on the next run, or from the log data), we could ask the AI to eject all cargo, remaining vessels, and escape pods. Then we could collect them at our leisure.

News and mail seem like a good idea, but should honestly probably be pretty low priority.

And my concern with properly attaching the docking seal is that it may require adjusting the ship, thus using even more precious fuel, and we can't be sure that it will shield us against the radiation, as it probably wasn't designed with this kind of hostile environment in mind.

Psionic Noble L3 Zhodani lineage | Stamina 12/12 | Lifeblood 11/11 | AC 11/11/10 | R+2 F+1 W+4 | Init +1 | Per: +1 | PSI 14/14

my thinking on ship plans being in ships data banks.:

If a warship,
It would very much have a ton of tactical data on as many ships as it's command crew felt possible. Most cases full designs for tactical use, in shooting at. boarding on and searching .Then subsystems design for reapers if own ships In any kind of feet it was in. This baby's not a one off and more than likely a mine line battleship if a war ship.

If a science vessel,
then again it would have information on itself and other craft.
For identification uses, not as useful.

If a merchant vessel,
It could have data for sale, as all info has to go v jumps, ship plans carry a good price.

If a privet ship
Holy crud! Who's got that kind of credits, any one that rich could have anything in the IA.

===========

the who gos next as no one wanted to go before, most of use working with -5 on every roll. its holt again i think.
if we go with ships logs and deck plans her ladyship could remote view to see if a craft is still in the docking area and something like intact.

IMHO, my priorities to ask the crazy AI:
1. Where are the removable data banks (hardware) and how do we decode them? Surely, they have have backups, maybe compressed of its data, that can be removed in cases like this. Basically recover the hard drive to give our techs something to work on back home. Our first priority should be the recovery of knowledge for our society
2. Everything else is gravy

I think the consensus for the first question is Deckplans/Schematics for the wreck, with a focus on computer hardware and any boat-bays in the functional section. So we can focus our recovery efforts.

First stab at the query:
"Computer: Download deckplans for this vessel including computer hardware schematic. Highlight sections that still have power. Highlight physical back up computer memory."

Female Lieutenant Commander [2 Professional / 1 Academic / 2 Navy*] [Stamina 18/11 | Lifeblood: 11/11 | AC: 15 | T: 12 | FF: 13 | Fort: 0 | Ref: 4 | Will: 10 | Init: +2 | Per: +4 | Comb. Eng.: +11] [Easy Recall: 1/1 | Inspired: 1/1]

You probably want to say upload if you are talking to the AI directly. Also, we may want to be a little more general.

Second Stab
"Computer: Upload all plans and schematics for your vessel and its subsystems. Label and highlight all sections that still have power, all sections that are still functional, and the locations of all physical backups of ship and crew data."

@mdt, Does this count as a single query or multiple?

I get to the airport at 4:30 Wednesday for my 6:30 flight.

United tries to get by cheap and puts just enough gas in the jet to make it to destination. They screw up, have to turn around once they make it to the strip, and then take 2.5 hours to fuel up again and take off.

The plane lands at 8:30 (this is the plane coming to where I am). They swear they will have us out of there in 10 minutes.

At 9:15 we take off. We land at 10:45. My connecting flight is at 10:55, and is in another terminal. I run to the train that connects terminals. I get to the gate at 10:58. They didn't hold my plane, it's against policy.

It takes me 45 minutes of arguing with them but they won't give me a hotel, because it was the weather, not them putting too little fuel or refusing ot hold my flight for 3 minutes. BS.

I get to the hotel about 1:30 (actually in the hotel room that is). I'm so afraid I'll sleep through the alarm at this point, that I can't sleep. So I spend 4 hours resting on the bed watching tv before going back to the airport for a 7:25 flight.

The 7:25 flight leaves the gate at 7:45. We take off at 8:30. I get to my airport at 9:20. It then takes me another hour to get my luggage (they got it on the plane that took off without me the night before!), and finally get my car and head off home. I run into traffic, and it's 11:30 by the time I actually get into my house.

I then promptly fall asleep in front of the computer trying to work after having had no sleep for 36 hours.

So yeah, sorry for not posting yesterday. I'll get posts up today sometime.

What's the total clock down to?

Did we find the hard drive?

Which boat bay has the boat?

How far is engineering, lower hold, and CDC to the boat bay?

Would you please repost the limit of the suits? 40 minutes?

I think we should make a run to the boat to power it up. Annara needs to volunteer to go and over-ride Vathan's and Fernan's telling her not to. Then Vathan and Fernan as bodyguards are forced to go. We probably can recycle the suit limits with the boat's life support.

Holt should go and recon engineering and lower hold. If she finds anything useful, we can sortie from the boat.

Locations that are still powered is basically
engineering,
lower hold,
CDC (Combat Damage Control),
Boat Bay 12,
Boat bay 13,
28 crew quarters,
a dozen heads,
life support 18,
life support 19.

You have about 2.5 hours left, but you'll need another half hour to get the suit scrubbed again. Scrubbing takes 30 minutes. So functionally, you have 2 more half-hour missions.

They haven't found the black box yet, if one exists.

They did find a boat in Boat Bay 13, but haven't investigated it yet.

Boat Bay 13 is 10 minutes from the Dawn, now that Holt has found a way around the damage in the ship.

Lower Deck would normally be 2 minutes from Engineering by lift, but lifts would be dangerous to take now. So going by access shaft would take about 10 or 15 minutes.

CDC is 5 minutes from Engineering, same deck, forward of engineering.

Leaving the Dawn in a ship's suit is a death sentence, getting onto the wreck with a ship's suit is impoosible, as you'd need to pass through 300 more sievert's of radiation than the suits can handle.

Thanks. I didn't mean ship suits. I meant vac suit. 40 minutes?

thanks

Only one hard-vac suit on the ship, which Holt's using.

OH!! I never distinguished the difference.

So the hard-vac suit has only 40 minutes of air?

It's not that, it's systems are hardened against radiation, but it has to be scrubbed. At the radiation levels it's exposed to when it exits the ship, it has to be scrubbed after about 40 minutes of exposure, or the wearer takes radiation. Ya'll have been using it in 30 minute intervals to have some safety margin on it's systems. The ship contains a scrubber for the suit, that clears out the radiation (basically scrubbing it's outer shell with special gel and water). Also, there's the heat factor, the radiation builds up the heat on the suit, and that has to be dispersed or the person inside will cook. This is very hard use for this suit right now, and it might be downchecked on return. You're basically putting a decade of wear on it's shielding systems every time Holt leaves the ship.

Wow. I completely missed this description from before.

I'm back!

And it seems we found a shiny too. That shuttle would be a grand prize ... If we can get it!

Trying to man it does seem like a monumental task - and even if it works, we will probably lose our chance to explore the rest of the ship.

The question is, do you all think we can get the AI to eject the shuttle safely?

We have nav logs that hopefully may be decrypted. Even if we can't, our station *should* contain the sensor data to find an approximative location.

The other component that we lack to properly traverse the stars would be a jump drive. Even if we don't find one - and it is very unlikely we could salvage the main ships drive - perhaps the shuttle has one? Or the Navy and university can restore one ...

TL:DR - Should we ask the AI to (safely) eject the found shuttle for us? Do you think it will work?

And

What should Holt go looking for next?
