Thanks for pointing out the change in Perception modifiers. I've made changes for the future.

Paizo was down for over 13 hours today, and has been flakey all weekend. I'll understand if you all have trouble logging in.

Since Lily has suggested actually intervening...

Bree has heard of these nasty fey creatures. Mites are small fey that have damage reduction except for cold iron. They also hate dwarves and gnomes. The DC for the knowledge check is only 6, so I gave you two bits of knowledge about them. -- TDM

Cedric is still a little gunshy about intervening on behalf of animals after what happened with the last few. He stands by for the moment, waiting just a little extra long to see what happens when the others start to choose a side. One of the perks of being slow to react is the ability to have the most information possible before deciding what to do.

Bree kills the Mite pulling the puppy.

Cyrioul recalls that mites can cast doom, and can influence swarms. He also enhances Thorek.

One mite steps back from the wolf and casts doom on Bree. DC 10 will save or become shaken

The mite near the pup attempts to grapple: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (2) - 2 = 0 the now-released pup, unsuccessfully.

The remaining mites continue to harass the wounded wolf: 1d20 ⇒ 131d20 ⇒ 201d20 ⇒ 4. One of them viciously: 1d20 ⇒ 14 wounds: 2d3 - 2 ⇒ (3, 3) - 2 = 4 the wolf

Lily kills the remaining mite near the pup.

The pup runs back into the den.

The wolf snaps: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 - 2 = 15 at a mite: 1d6 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 1 - 2 = 4, killing it.

This is the passage I've been basing my assumption on, for reference:

CRB combat section wrote:
Recovering with Help: One hour after a tended, dying character becomes stable, the character must make a DC 10 Constitution check to become conscious. The character takes a penalty on this roll equal to his negative hit point total. Conscious characters with negative hit point totals are treated as disabled characters. If the character remains unconscious, he receives another check every hour to regain consciousness. A natural 20 on this check is an automatic success. Even if unconscious, the character recovers hit points naturally. He automatically regains consciousness when his hit points rise to 1 or higher.

It definitely seems like the site is going down more frequently and for longer lately.

Partly out of frustration for the awkward way the encounter with the wolves and mites ended, and partly because they haven't quite been cutting it so far when they go along with the minimum effort, Cedric tries throwing himself whole-heartedly into the search for food for the group.

Paizo is definitely having some trouble. But, I don't think it is their servers, but their upstream provider, or some DNS poisoning

Don't micromanage the survival-type checks. It is important to understand that being in the woods, on the move, has negative consequences, but it is only part of the problem.

Without any ill townsfolk to take up his time, Thorek sets to foraging with a will, following Edran around and subjecting the man to another seemingly endless stream of jokes--though he spends as much time explaining the context of Dwarven puns ("This won't really make sense in Common, but... that's a Kraggodan idiom for... which is funny because in Dwarven...") as he does actually telling the jokes. Boudra, also acutely aware of the need to maintain their food stocks, ventures out to gather food as well.

Survival: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30 Ha. Nice!

I don't mind this, but we can't keep it up forever...we're only able to focus on immediate survival. We've got to find somewhere to hole up and...oooooh! Blueberries!

Caladra wanting to practice with her new bow decides to hunt instead of fish. She moves through the forest careful where she steps. At one point she found the trail of a deer but it was too elusive for her, or she was too loud for it. When she finally had enough she returned back to camp, no deer but a couple rabbits for stew.

Edran tries to follow the stories that Thorek tells, meanwhile whittling a small flute that he will play occasionally.

Between whittling, whistling, and his general distraction,
Edran is 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 of no help foraging for food.

Day 6

You come across a creek. In the creek bed is a body of a human. It has been brutalized. Her face is barely recognizable beneath the bruises and wounds.

Perception checks:

Boudra perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Bree perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Caladra perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Cedric perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Cyrioul perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Lily perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Thorek perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Several of you recognize that the wounds on the body came from the same sort of weapons the hobgoblins use and also reveals a broken black fingernail, like a hobgoblin's, in one of the injuries.

DC 15 Heal check:
While examining the body, you determine that while the injuries were fatal, none were decidedly lethal blows. Instead the wounds were shallow and carefully placed to cause pain and a slow death.

Some of the town residents recognize her as Gilida Dravonich, a part-time resident of Phaendar, who worked as a trapper.

After examining the corpse Thorek's jaw is set and his eyes are hard. "The bastards made sure she suffered," the dwarf growls, anger clear in his voice. "And the fact that they dumped her here, ahead of us...I think we can expect an ambush ahead. There's no way a group as large as ours escaped their notice."

Closing the woman's eyes, he murmurs a prayer in Dwarven. "Kan steinen lede deg til dine forfedres haller."

"We'll definitely need to be more careful then. Foraging parties are going to have to stick closer to camp and I'd feel better if everyone left in pairs if they need to leave." Caladra said.

She looked at the brutalized body a moment longer before looking away. "We can't leave her here either. She deserves more respect than this. Even a shallow grave is better than being fodder for whatever walks by."

Thorek's examination of the body leads him to an even further conclusion. The mutilation of the body continued even after death.

The rest of the day is uneventful.

Please make survival checks for day and evening 6

Boudra watches, grim-faced, as the others bring Gilda's body out of the river. Gilda...may the Lady of Graves grant you peace. She stifles tears as she signs to the others, We should be on guard during the nights as well. Hobgoblins can see in the dark, can't they? So they might well try to attack us at night, if they actually know where we are.

Day 7

In the afternoon, Baldric and Farrow, bring an unconscious Clidon the Trader back to camp. They have been able to stop the bleeding, but, Clidon has taken 12 points of damage.

In breathless detail, Baldric and Farrow tell a story of an unusually large and clever boar that attacked them in the woods and made off with their packs.
