Alright, SnowHeart's submission here. Stats are in the profile but the short short version:

N Male Human. 1 level of Gunslinger (pistolero) and 2 levels of Inquisitor (Sanctified Slayer).

I realize it's far from optimized but I hope I'm not handicapping myself (and the rest of the party), so... yes, thoughts/suggestions are welcome!

Background (with addenda):
It seems as if everyone in Ustalav knows Grethel's story and, by extension, her brother's. It is said he is the lackwit brother who let himself be enticed by an old woman with the simple promise of sweets, Hansel was the fool to Grethel's wit.

While not entirely untrue, it is a bit unfair, at least as far as the brother sees it.

As a boy, Johannes was known as Hansel. He insists he was bewitched by the hag who compelled him through her magic into her cage and to consume the fattening treats she provided. Whatever the truth of the past, he has tried to throw it off (along with the embarrassment and sniggering the story often elicits).

As they grew older, the brother followed Grethel into Professor Lorrimar's orbit. The old hunter was kind to the boy but also saw within him something that could be nurtured (or, perhaps, manipulated) into a useful tool. Lorrimar introduced then-Hansel to an unusually militant member of the Sarenraen faith (a dwarf) who converted Hansel and trained him in the arts of hunting witches and those who would bind and enslave others through their magics... just as the hag had done to the brother.

Now calling himself Johannes, he has dedicated himself to ridding Ustalav from the evil of magic used to enslave and destroy the lives of its people. In particular, he views many of the magical traditions as paths to such evil, particularly those unbound by principled study or divine guidance, and feels the practitioners of such arts need of careful observation and, occasionally, culling.

He has mostly lived in his sister's shadow and, truth be told, begrudges it on occasion. He also feels her use of magic tempts the darkness that nearly took them as children. Yet, he loves her and appreciates her shared zeal in bringing the evils of Ustalav to justice.

His Faith and Alignment: Many think of Sarenrae as one of the more beneficent gods. Yet for those who are irredeemably evil, she offers no mercy. This is Johannes calling, to bring wickedness to the wicked. Wrath to the wrathful. Destruction upon the destroyers. Twining his faith and his weapons, he is a grim destroyer of the undead and views magic-users with suspicion for he knows the evil that can come of magical pacts.

Family Background (WIP): Grethel and Hans probably left their home town shortly after the incident. After they had escaped and returned home, they found their parents and the rest of the hamlet had intended to sacrifice the children to the hag as part of a pact to improve the hamlet's prosperity. Their father was weak and most of the urging (within the family) had come from their step-mother.
They may have learned the truth of it all when their father confessed upon their return. (Like I said, it's a WIP.)

Well. The only difference between the minotaur one and the double one is -4 vs -2.

Only does 1d8 per bolt. And crits only apply to 1 bolt not both

Also. It seems the minotaur crossbow is PFs legal =^^=

Snow, I was gonna suggest a quick dip of Gunslinger, so if it's a bad idea, at least you're not the only one who had it. :-)

Lol. Nice to know I'm not alone at least. :-)

When I thought about grit and deeds plus the "loss" of the domain/inquisition, I just figured it made more sense to take the dip.

I'm still chewing on the teamwork feats. Since guns resolve against touch AC (in first range increment anyway) I'm not sure how much I need bonuses on attack rolls, which seems to be what most of the teamwork feats offer for ranged. But, I've got a level to think about it. Also not sure about the domain. Was thinking of Valor which could be incredibly useful for this campaign (but maybe too useful/broken).

Well, if your TW feat choice ends up being one that can work for both you as a ranged guy and me in melee, I could probably be talked into picking it up on my own.

As you said, we've got time. Plus, there's that whole "We have to actually make the cut first" part. :-)

EDIT: important bit to remember, guns are against touch AC in the first range increment.

EDIT 2: Valor looks good, and maybe Final Rest? Just throwing that out there.

Final Rest the first power is essentially a buffed Orison. I could swap out the Orison for something else but not a lot to pick from. That did get me to remember though that my spell choices are fixed. So, going to have to give that more thought.

GM, would the valor inqusiiton undermine what you're going for with this campaign? (Specifically the remove fear ability?)

Admittedly, I had my eye more on the second ability. If you had that though, in most jurisdictions you are required to use Blade's line about ice skating uphill. :)

Yeah but with the dip into Gunslinger, if we end at level 8, I'll never get to that second one. :-(

Though I have my spells known for the day listed, they may be changed later on depending on what spells the rest of the party may have.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

True. :-\ Well, here's hoping we have so much damn fun we keep the band together for another one!

@Johannes - Valor is fine however instead of immunity you get +4 bonus to fear effects.

@Seth - your right the minotaur double x-bow is PFS legal, but there is a lot of debate on it, I didn't really look into it I saw the 4d8 and was like no way. (forgot it was large; and that the double dmg was already included), however I would still rule that only minotaur can use it. you can take the double x-bow regular. (because after research the minotaur x-bow was made in 2008, way before a lot of feats were created. it is way better in EVERY aspect. (ranged and negative to attack). you can choose a regular double x-bow as your 1 free special item though if you wish due to the uniqueness of it.

Thanks, GM. Since that's the 8th level ability (which I won't get due to the dip into Gunslinger), I was thinking more about the Remove Fear ability at 1st level. But if you don't have a problem with the concept, I'll keep it on the table.

Thanks GM. I will do so. Apologies if it seemed like i was pushing too hard on the subject

Will post new build later tonight

I'm going to stat up Grethel on Sunday/Monday.

ok I'm going to push back the choosing because it was supposed to be sat, due to a little more interest. To tues.
We will start the campaign on wed.

don't forget your backgrounds.

I'm easy. More interest is good (and doesn't surprise me as this has percolated). Good luck to all.

Seems like this concept is attracting a lot of fun folks and submissions.

This is Willshaper, I have my character put together in the profile of this char/avatar, man that took longer than I thought to put together. Still learning how to use the posting stuff here and I don't have the calculated rolls all up yet, but all the choices are made.

The pushback is fine for me since I'm out of town for weekend. Gives me more time to work on stuff.

Vortigorn's background::

For many years, Vortigorn enjoyed life as a young hunter of the Tiger Tribe. He spent his many days
tracking game through the Numerian plains with his fellow Kellid warriors. He grew big and strong, but
was still young in the ways of the world outside of the plains.
One day, the hunters came upon a herd of slaughtered caribou. Crouching amidst the carnage still
feeding upon the warm blood was a large twisted wolf. The beast had slain the entire herd by tearing
them apart with surgical precision.
The young hunters were shocked by the sight of the abattoir. Vortigorn was still reeling at the presence
of such a monster as it leaped upon them. Without thinking, he brought his mighty greataxe to bear upon
the beast only to find that it used the attack to rip into his flesh.
Vortigorn fell in a flash of hot pain and was thrown like a child's toy across the hard ground.
Unconsciousness spared him the rest of the pain of witnessing his tribesmen torn to pieces.
When he regained his senses. Vortigorn was alone. His kinsman slaughtered and the beast that beset
upon them all gone in the cool shade of the encroaching evening. Vortigorn stumbled back to his tribe
and healed his wounds.
In the months following the attack, Vortigorn discovered that when he was in the throes of his rage, that
he found himself transformed into a great raging black bear. He maintained his wits during this bloodlust,
but his form was that of a powerful beast.
As the years went by, Vortigorn dedicated himself to finding the beast that marked him. Lacking the
knowledge to study the beasts to determine whether they be lycanthropes, skinwalkers or some other form
of unholy creature, Vortigorn took the only course of action that he knew and hit them with his axe.
Vortigorn quietly made a name for himself as a resilient slayer of beasts and undead across the Numeria
plains and the counties of Ustalav. This brought him to the attention of Professor Lorrimar who put the
young barbarian's beast slaying proclivities to use.
Vortigorn was hired as a strongarm for the Professor's group of hunters. He has recently returned from a
long hunt involving a set of possible lycanthropes known as the Maragore Twins. Vortigorn is anxious to
test his axe upon their shapechanging flesh, but doesn't want to anger the Professor again by attacking
prisoners.

I am Vort.

If I take the Juju Salt, any chance I can calculate DC off my Wisdom instead of Charisma?

Here at last is Tazo's submission, Erodin Stark, a Skinwalker Brawler and his wolf companion Ozem. He has a split personality with Erodin being the idealistic but rather timid human, and Stark being the fierce wolf. I'll distinguish their voices by using regular (human) vs italic (wolf) text. Flavorwise, I am treating Boar Style (which gives slashing damage with unarmed strikes) as if Stark is unleashing his claws.

I regret that there's somewhat of an overlap with Vortigorn, though I'd say having a bear and a wolf lycanthrope in the same party could open up entertaining roleplay opportunities (though to be honest, I would most want a cat to pair up with the dogs!)

Maybe I can manage to get bit by a werecat of some type during the game then. :)

Some good ideas here.

Alexandria Minerva Paradine wrote:

In a campaign of this sort, I just can't imagine that will work out the way Alex would want it to, y'know?

@redblade I would be ok for your primary casting stat.

Dot

OK, here's Grethel. She's not quite as I envision, but the archetype I was hoping to use really didn't work the way I wanted it to. It'll take a couple more levels, but she should get there.

She's got more ranged ability than I was expecting as she kept her kinetic blasts, but I envision her as more of a melee character (expecting to use grapple a lot). She'll probably take another level (or maybe 2) of kineticist at some point, but I expect to advance mostly as a brawler moving forward.

Did some cleanup on the character sheet - AC and attack is now correct, replaced a cold iron cestus with cold iron spikes on his shield.

@Grethel - I think kineticists are especially hard to build because it's really hard to figure out how to qualify for all the various powers. But a grappler who grabs on to people and burns them would be very stylish.

Erodin -- yeah. It's frustrating since it seems like such a cool build but the archetype that should let it work best (elemental ascetic) is so bad (here; have another attribute your class is dependent on). It would let me do flaming fists each round, but removes my ability to have me be on fire when I'm grappling (not to mention the ability to wear armor).

Anyway, I think this will work. Just will take a little longer to get to the build I want. That's part of why I like starting at higher levels, though. You can start off a little more how you envision your character.

Okay, last minute change -- I'd like to use the Skinwalker Alternate Heritages from Blood of the Moon to make Erodin/Stark a Werewolf-Kin. The main reason is the Bestial Feature giving a +2 saving throw bonus--I realized that if we're playing with rules from Horror Adventures that a boosted Will save is damn useful, even at the cost of lower hit/damage. But . . . if you think that's too optimized / takes the fun out of going insane, I can switch it back no problem.

I disagree, Elves with big swords wield those because it is what they are most experienced with! ;)

Llanofiss will hide behind Hans and tie his shoes together before leaping in front of his sister at the last min to save her life and be the hero! Then we will all laugh as Hans stumbles, then I get to tell everyone not to laugh because we all make mistakes and were all allies here. Then sister sees my strength of character and falls head over heals.

And that kids is why Uncle Hans always checks his shoe laces!

Grethel growls.

*Llanofiss gives a knowing smile to Grethel as he makes a clawing motion*

"Rawwwrr! You are such a flirt!"

@erodin- werewolf kin will be fine.

Closing the thread for submissions. will choose tomorrow.

Better hope she's flirting. If she doesn't like you, she'll smile, play dumb, trick you, then toss you into an oven. Ah...fun times.

Updated build slightly with additional gear and switched to Valor inquisition. Maybe lil' Hans has found his backbone. Also, GM, how are you handling the weight of coins? Do you want the selected players to track it or house rule it to no weight? I ask just because if selected my current sheet does not factor it in for encumberance but I can change that if you like. I'm easy.

Ok I have chosen the following players. please Dot. I thanks to everyone that submitted.

-Johannas Grim- inquisitor
-Grethel Grim- kinetistist
-Llanowhatsit- rogue
-Alexandria- cleric
-Brother Fen- Barbarian

That was quicker than expected. :)

Woohoo! Thanks for picking Vort. There were a lot of great characters. Looking forward to the game.

Yay! That must have been tough, GM. A lot of great submissions.

Awesome! Looking forward to getting to know the other players and having a great game.

Have fun all
