I just hit on an idea. I am going to run a Quest from Pathfinder Society. The Quests are shorter than Scenarios (which, in turn are shorter than modules). This will give us a chance to try out the PbP format without a long time commitment. Also some of the quests have pre-generated characters. I'll use one of those so that we don't need to spend time creating characters for a game that might not last very long.
Then, if we like the PbP format, we can move on to something a little bigger. Does that sound good?
The Pregens available are Barbarian, Monk, Summoner, and Rogue. They use the rules from the Pathfinder Unchained book, and are a little different than the Core classes. But they are good. This game will be 5th level.

I'm just here to lurk and eat popcorn. Do you mind if I dot your gameplay so that I can watch?
Hmm
Not at all! But if you want to play in Fane of Fangs when I run it later, you should probably not lurk too much. :) (Unless you've played it already, of course.)

I think it will be
Monk Jeff
Barbarian Sarah
Rogue Rob
Summoner BenApril is going to join us also, and she will play a Bard.
Does April know what she's getting...and getting into... with a bard? Just making sure!
So what happens now, snappy tavern talk or just roll initiative?

I want to start this soon, but I need to wait until everyone is ready.
Take a look at these two guides to Play-by-Post
They have a lot of useful information. Then you will need to make alias profiles for your characters, so that you can post as those characters. You may change the names of the characters if you want, but try to find an avatar picture that matches the character.
You don't need to put the whole character sheet into the profile for this game because I have copies of everyone's characters (but you can if you want to, it might be convenient for you).
You should build a "status bar," however. (More below)
Juniper Berrythwaite |
"Hi. I'm Juniper Berrythwaite. I'm one of The Fox's characters. Note the status bar under my name above? If you click on my name you can look at my profile to see how I built my status bar. You should do something similar for your characters. It doesn't need to include everything—mine is probably overly inclusive. It should include the basics: hp, AC, saves, important skills, and any limited use abilities."
Whoever is playing the summoner (Ben?) will need to create a second profile for the eidolon as well.

K, what are the character build rules or where are the default monk stats?
GM "The Fox" |
Sarah messaged me with some questions. I thought I would answer them here because you all probably have similar questions.
Am I supposed to use this character exactly as written, or just attach the stats and abilities to a character with name/personality/history/etc. that I create?
Yeah, you'll use it as written. This first adventure will be very short—two encounters. So there isn't time to really develop a history, etc. If that is successful, we can move on to a longer adventure with everyone making their own characters.
The other hold up is that I couldn't figure out how to make a character on this site on Tuesday. I see how to add an alias to my account, but didn't see anywhere to add information like you have on yours. What am I missing?
Yeah, it is not a form you enter data or anything like that. On the alias page, click [Edit My Profile]. Then there is a box labeled "About _____". That box is where you put your character sheet. You can copy and paste it over from the PDF. Really, you don't even need to do that for this character because I have the character sheets.
At the bottom of that box is a small button labeled "How to Format Your Text" [Show]. Click on that and it has the format codes in there.
To get the status bar, fill in the fields at the top of the profile. Here is what I have in those fields (note that I am putting them in the order that they will appear in your status bar, which is not the order they appear on the Profile page—ARGH! So nonintuitive).
Gender: Female halfling pal 2/sor 3/dd 2┃hp 49/49┃AC 33, T 18, IT 22, FF 30; +2 vs AoO┃CMD 21; +2 vs bull rush, grp, rep, trip┃F+11, R+10, W+10; +2 v fear, –2 v disease┃Resist cold 5, neg engy 10
Race: ┃Init +3 | Per +4┃speed 30 ft┃Diplomacy +11, Kn (arcana) +9, Spellcraft +10┃Spells 2nd—4/4, 1st—7/8┃Lay Hands (1d6) 5/6
Class/Levels: ┃Bast. Good 1/1┃Lucky Halfling 1/1┃jing. fort. sold. 1/1┃Adptble Luck 3/3┃Conditions: —
You can break them up however you want. I broke them that way due to space limitations. The blue text comes from using the "out-of-character" markup code. The bar is ┃, which is different than the normal pipe, |, because it comes with space on either side. (That is useful because those fields are limited by the total number of characters, not the width they occupy.)
The website supports most Unicode characters, so you can copy and paste from other sites many different symbols.

Dunder here!
Juniper Berrythwaite |
"Juniper here. This is me talking," the small halfling said as she was explaining different markups for posting.
"This is me shouting," she said over the noise of the crowd.
This should be a lot of fun, Juniper thought while talking to her friends.
And this is out-of-character text.
If you hit the [Reply] button, you can see how I accomplished these.
We use bold text in quotes for dialogue.
We use italic text (no quotes) for inner monologue.
We use out-of-character text for off-topic remarks.
And we use unmodified text for narration.

"Merisiel" "I am Merisiel - rogue extraordinaire, perhaps you've heard of me?" I say and strike a heroic pose with my hands on my hips.

"We should also practice rolling dice."
test roll: 1d20 ⇒ 20 Natural 20! Woohoo!
longsword attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 That should hit.
Juniper swings her sword hard...
damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 ...and damages her foe.
longsword attack, Power Attack, flanking: 1d20 + 7 - 1 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 7 - 1 + 2 = 25
damage, PA: 1d8 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 2 = 13 Even better!
Note: I used the [Preview] button to see what my dice rolls were before I finished composing this post so that I could add comments. :)
