DM, the Carnival was only mentioned once in a sentence or two in the 3.5 core books. Heroes of Light had the Carnival as a faction, but did not classify it as a wandering domain when it was clearly listed in 2.0 as one. There was a full book on it in 2.0 titled, you guessed it, The Carnival!
And no problem, DM, I was happy to help someone who appreciates the awesome setting of Ravenloft! If I had access to my computer rather than my phone, I would have sent a PDF I have detailing all the 'canon' domains in a broad stroke that did not spoil stuff like darklords and similar things.
If you need any more info from the 3.5 books, 2.0 books, or something similar, just let me know and I can scan some pages into a Google Doc for you.
I'm still mulling over some ideas for characters, because I was busy earlier. I hope there's still room for a character by tomorrow or Thursday!

DM Nerk |

No rush, SP, there's only one more or less finished so far, and I'm going to go ahead and add characters as solid characters present themselves. The story goes on, and they get worked in.
No need to worry about spoiling darklords, as I'm not using them. The characters exist, but they are neither more powerful nor more deeply bound to their domains anymore than anyone else is. There is still that final stage of corruption to worry about, and any PC who makes it that far will still become an NPC.
As far as what sort of creatures might be encountered and so on, you're all natives of Ravenloft, you'd know the folklore. Of course, folklore isn't always 100% accurate.

Sergei Farmer |

Sergei never believed any of it anyway, so he wasn't the sort to ask if he had any family anywhere else.
As for the Paladin thing, yeah, I can do that.

Bliznap |

@ Bliznap - thanks for the tweak. Borca's pretty ideal for your guy. There aren't a lot of non-humans there is the only downside, but that's balanced by the campaign starting there. I can definitely see possibilities for your character's role there, struggling to be taken seriously as a musician when most people see a tiny man and expect a clown.
I was debating swapping to Human after reading the stats on Borca in the Ravenloft PHB last night. I kinda want it to be more of a challenge though. In a more roleplaying focused game, adding more things for me to roleplay gives me more options, so I am going to stick with Gnome.
I have done the "Crunch" for the character and he is now finally ready for approval.

DM Nerk |

No one he is personally close to remains alive, though, if I read you right?

Bliznap |

Pathfinder sCoreForge. Not sure where I DL'd it from, but it is just a robust Excel document that generates characters. My version is probably old because it doesn't have things like Wrath of the Righteous and Ultimate Campaign stuff, but this character is built mostly using CRB/ARG, so it works.
I usually use Hero lab, but I am at work so no access :(.

Bliznap |

I am sure you could. I have not extensively looked at the advanced tab, but that has quite a bit of customization. I am sure you could do curses there, treat them as spells maybe?
The program is a little intimidating at first, but it does what it is meant to do pretty well. My version seems to be missing a mundane equipment and spell section, so I had to add those myself. Not too difficult.

Sergei Farmer |

That's not quite accurate. He was a farmer in a small, close knit community. His immediate family was small, but he likely had extended family, in-laws and friends all pretty close by.
He just went a little crazy when his wife was killed and his home was burned. It took him six months of hard drinking and steady depression to finally give up on his old life and decide to leave it behind, but when he finally slipped away into the night he probably left quite a few people behind.
It is also important to note that his tragedy came at the hands of people. He's heard legends of the monsters in the dark, like anyone, but he has no experience with them, and really he'd say they all pale next to the evils men do to each other.
Does that help?

Sergei Farmer |

Absolutely. I left those areas intentionally blank though. I didn't want to shoehorn in an NPC I made up. I'd rather adjust my character background to include an NPC that is relevant to the story. That pulls me deeper into the plot and helps me help you.
I'm like an angry badger when I get my jaws on a plot hook.

I'll have a bit of background in the city...working as a poor laborer up to the campaign's start...with a boss reminiscent of Ebineezer Scrooge...doing something suitably degrading...I think I'll eventually take a dire rat as a companion...so...rat catcher? Is that a common enough profession?
I doubt he has many friends, but he's responsive to anyone who is kind. I like him as an orphan,so he has ties...slight...to an orphanage...or other orphans.

DM Nerk |

I'm sure Levkarest has plenty of work for a rat catcher.
Your boss, Emilio Sarac, is grandnephew of Emilia Sarac, the Sefeasa's procuratrix, and is notoriously stingy with his workers. Like most members of the Borcan nobility, he has no hesitation about spending extraordinary amounts of money on himself.

Here's hoping for good druid stats:
Wisdom: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5) = 11 Wisdom: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 4) = 9 Wisdom: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 1) = 8 Wisdom: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 1) = 10

Take the first set if you prefer them, I hadn't imagined anyone would want to go with a primary stat under 14, but it's a good set of stats overall. Or, try again, since the dice seem pissy today and your prime is still under 14.

EldonG, does the orphanage in your background have a name? I was thinking of having my character be a runaway from it. He escapes from the city and finds a friendly druid.
Which reminds me, GM Nerk is the Mooncaller archetype acceptable for your game?
Languages. Balok and Luktar are the two I'll probably take. Not sure about the bonus language. Any others that might be popular in Borca?

DM Nerk |

@ tom - the Mooncaller looks great.
Mordentish is the language of the educated classes in much of Ravenloft. As Balok has become a default tongue for trade, Mordentish is the default language for scholarship, and is more likely to be spoken by Borcan nobility than Borcan, which they consider the peasants' language.
@ Sergei & Bliz - me too.

I'm sure it does- if you want, feel free to name it. Perhaps we knew each other as children?
I'll take both the common tongue and that of the nobility, and need a third he's picked up as well...Caliban a language of its own?

DM Nerk |

Incidentally, for details on e6 adjusted to pathfinder, this is what I'm using. This only really deals with the CRB, so some expansion may be needed to adapt archetypes and so on, but so far I don't see anything glaring that needs addressed.
@ Eldon: Suspicious trait gives you +1 sense motive and makes it always a class skill.
Rice Runner trait gives acrobatics as a class skill and a +1. It's supposed to be from a particular part of Golarion, but if you can justify your character's exception acrobatic talent in his background, I'm good with it.
Your racial Outcast Rating is a penalty to Bluff, Diplomacy and Perform and a bonus to Intimidate: if you're a caliban, your OR is 5.
There is no common tongue, precisely, instead you get the native language of your domain (Borcan, if you're from here). There is no Caliban language, as they are essentially mutant humans. Balok is useful as it is commonly used by merchants throughout Ravenloft, and Mordentish is commonly used by the nobility in much of the core.

OK, all three of them, then. As to justifying acrobatics, he gets the tough jobs- often jumping, climbing, and coping with rooftops, sewers and whatever comes up.
Maybe I can take a negative as if I was an outsider, and take an extra trait? Something that makes him effectively invisible in society, like an untouchable in India?
His favored enemy will be undead - they terrify him...

Long and hard I thought about aasimar when I started this thread, but eventually I decided that Ravenloft's corrupting influence is drawn to good outsiders too powerfully for any but the strongest to remain pure for very long. An aasimar would draw that attention in the womb, and would be twisted before birth into something else, probably a Caliban.

Hey DM Nerk...
I had never heard of Epic 6 until now but I have to say it seems AMAZING.
My problem with the d20 system as a whole is that when the game breaks down, it breaks down hard and players have no real threats to them whatsoever. It also seems that around lvl 9 or so is when the most "I win!" combos of play take place. I can definitively say I will use Epic 6 but suited to pathfinder next time I run a campaign.
That said, some experience in the system would be nice. Do you have room for another player?

Yeah. I actually love the high power stuff but I don't love how long it takes to play at high levels. I'm lucky to get through one or two encounters in an evening's play with my real-time group.
Oops. And yes, there's room for more. To my knowledge, there are still only two finished characters.
Mine's all but finished. I'll start with a great club (which he uses as a walking stick, btw) a longspear for reach, a sling and a dagger...wearing leather under his ragged clothes, with combat reflexes...not sure what other feat...oodles of skills...

Belenus is the Ravenloft deity that probably comes closest to Sarenrae, pretty much a celtic-vibe pagan sun god. Just for fluff purposes, for all mechanical purposes, he's Sarenrae. You probably aren't from around here, though.

Here's Isabeau, all pre-alienated and ready to go! I'll do some formatting on the sheet so it looks better later, for now I just wanted to get her submitted since I'll be busy with family tomorrow. Character Sheet and Background Story on the profile. Hope the background isn't too wordy, I can be more succinct in the future if that's preferred. Looks like a fun campaign! *crosses fingers*

Sudara |

Ready to go as well.
Sudara is a Fetchling Ninja. He knows he is different, but he doesn't know exactly what he is. He also had the misfortune of winding up with a 6 wisdom, so I plan on playing his not all sane.
I plan on going Ninja 2/Sorc 4 with either the void-touched bloodline or the shadow bloodline. I'm leaning toward void touched.
Sudara is desperate for acceptance. His life as an urchin was pretty terrible. I plan on keeping up his journal regularly, adding his own warped perspective to what we see and do.

DM Nerk |

@ Sudara - I hate to knock out such a nicely drawn background, but the character creation stuff pretty clearly says CRB and ARG (minus summoners) so Ninja isn't a viable class. It's a flavor issue more than anything, I'm trying to maintain the mostly European feel of Ravenloft. Still, you can make him a rogue with the poisoner archetype, turn his wakizashi into a rapier and he becomes statistically identical to what you have now.
@ Isabeau - Nice job, and I'm sure Rake will turn up sooner or later, though in what circumstances I'll still have to decide.
