Damien watches the law in Fairhill walk away with a bemused expression, "Well played, Deputy. Doubt it'll be the last hurdle in this mess but at least it's behind us."

Grabbing a handful of Vorgya's hair, he turns her head so he can see her face, "Well, I certainly hope you have something else up your sleeve."

Leoven is not much happy with the delay. The return to Fairhill remind he that the life of an unborn child will be lost unless they do something about it...so many wrong things in the world.

Not sure if you remember Leo, but we're long past being able to save the child. We would have been severely pressed for time even if we had left immediately. No going back now, unfortunately :(

Lauriel puts the prismatic gem in her belt pouch, and turns to Kevezyat. "Chosen of Freya. Shandril has been waiting for you. She wants you to visit her at the shrine at once. You too, deep gnome. Please don't keep her waiting, it's important."

At the shrine, if you go:

Shandril looks a little different. She is not wearing her winter wolf cloak.

"Thank you for coming. I owe an apology to Jerrid Kinslarn. I see now that it was fate that led him to meddle with the crucible. I could not forgive him before, but it is clear to me now that his actions were meant to warn me that I have become too impassive and careless here in my tranquil little shrine. Even after I was shown my own vulnerability, I didn't take any measures to prevent what happened next. Last night I was asleep in my home, and the shrine, as usual, was left wide open, the crucible resting on the altar in plain view. A thief crept into the unattended shrine and made off with the crucible. But the thief did not stop there. Whatever it was, it made it's way next to the shrine of bowbe, where it broke in, to cause further mischief. Kath was passed out in his shrine, intoxicated, but he awoke to see an impish little creature urinating in that holy vessel which has blessed this community with fertility and good harvest for so many years. The imp fled with the crucible, and vanished into the night, but it dropped something before it left... This." Shandril uses a thick square of wool fabric to pick up an object, as if it is too unclean to touch with her bare hand.

Knowledge Religion DC 12:
The object is an unholy symbol belonging to the cult of orcus, the demon prince of undeath, who was vanquished in the last age by the champions of Thyr and Muir.

Knowledge Planes DC 12:
Imps are infernal heritage fiends, while orcus is a demon prince of the abyss. In the cosmology, infernal fiends and abyssal fiends do not work together. The devils serve law and the demons serve chaos.

As the gnome and the paladin head off, Damien sighs, happy to avoid dealing with Shandril.

He nods to Janna and the Deputy, "Well, we best see our friend to her accommodations, no? Quicker the better. We still need to hit the market, and she's miserable company to boot."

"Time for you to make the acquaintance of Fairhill's custodial hospitality whot! No funny business mind! For as you know first hand - our Mistress Faen is truly a force to be reckoned with!"

Jerrid purses his lips at what she says and slowly smiles, "he is a nasty man that Vortigern isn't he? Sends his familiar to steal the most precious magic here in Un- cough Fairhill, taunts you and all because he wants that amulet of Eralion's. Don't worry, sweetpea, we are going after that man who has your bowl and we will cut his imp's heart out as a gift for you. This has got interesting."

Shandril speaks to Kevezyat inside but loud enough for Jerrid to hear outside the open doors. Let's say Leo is inside the shrine with Kev, and everyone else is taking care of Astor or helping Vhillish with Vorgya. If that works for you guys.

The marketplace has everything in the equipment section of CRB up to 450 GP and purchases up to 2000 GP worth of goods per day at 50%. For specialty items beyond that check what merchants are in town.

Kevezyat listens to Shandril's speech, her eyebrow raising at her uncharateristic apology to Jerrid, then taking on a more compassionate air at he High Priestess' admission of fault.

Her brows furrow at the mention of the theft and desacration by the all too familliar description of Voltiger's ally.

"Freya's wisdom comes in all forms, Shandril, even the wisest of us sometimes do not see her aims clearly." Kevezyat says gently, placing a ebony hand on the priestess's shoulder.

Now that Janna and Leo have entered the Shrine, Jerrid leaves them with the priest to scout around.

DMG:
Jerrid wants to scout around the jail for a perfect hiding spot from where he and Sam could watch the doors and windows. Also is there a mage in town (I forget either way) - someone to help with spells like erase and arcane mark.

On the way into the guard tower Damien makes a note of good vantage points from which to observe any comings and goings. Once inside he makes casual conversation with the guard(s) about their routine.

How many guards are there on duty at any time?

Looks like it's just myself and the Deputy and Astor seeing to the prisoner.

Stepping back outside, Damien gives his former Sergeant an uneasy look, "Lets just hope the b~~@@ doesn't get us killed before this is all over."

Shrugging he adjusts his armor, "Right, just the three of us then. Suppose we'd best see to the requisitions. Come on Astor."

Taking the leads of Lucky 7 and the now unburdened pony, he heads into the Fairhill market to see about selling the equipment the group has collected on their travels, "Bet we can get something for this pony as well, never get the damn thing inside a wizard's keep. Takes a special kind of stupid only found in mules like Lucky and damned "adventurers" for that..."

I'll deal with the sales stuff in the discussion thread.

Damien "Wet" Winters wrote:

During the day, there is always at least one group of four guards making a circuit around the perimeter of the village and another similar group stationed in the central market (Area 8). At night the guards light a number of fires that ring the village perimeter. Through the course of the night, there are always a minimum of two patrols of five guards each that carry torches and travel a circuit from fire to fire making sure they stay lit and keeping watch for orcs or other evil creatures. In addition, there are always at least three guards stationed at each of the two guardhouses (Area 7), as well as three guards stationed at the top of the Tower of the Guard (Area 1). Arlen and Baran have proposed building a wall around the village, but Shandril is reluctant to do so, trusting instead in Freya’s protection.

straight out of the module ;)

Janna:
From what you remember of Vortigern back at the academy he was a disciplinarian type, very orderly, and obsessed with contracts and following procedure. You never heard him express any interest in Orcus, but then again no one openly would.

Jerrid Kinslarn wrote:

There's a jail beneath the guard tower (Area 1). It has a two nice hedges ringing it in concentric circles, some bushes and a shady tree. Pretty decent for hiding.

Or she could be kept beneath either of the guardhouses (Area 7). They have cells beneath them too.

Three guards at each location. The three at the guardhouse are usually up top on lookout, but Baran and Lauriel spend more time there.

The only mage with a permanent residence in town was Eralion back in the day, but of course he moved out and built his keep. You can buy a scroll of erase in the marketplace though if you want, or, you can wait and see what spell books are in Eralion's keep, or wait for a wizard to pass through town... Leoven says that arcane mark on you will last about a month without an erase spell, but it only appears when you come near that quarterstaff Jarra had.

"The ranger Herl reports that he has seen the same unholy emblem as the one I have just shown you on a flag flying from the steeple of the chapel Eralion built to Thyr inside his keep many years ago. Janna ponders Kev's question, trying to recall what she remembers. From what i remember, Vortigern, in his younger days, back when we were....friends", The thought of actually believing they were friends at one time give janna some pause.

Anyway, he was far to rigid, a stickler for rules, and following the process. I don't think he would have ever been interested in what Orcus had to offer. but, Janna seems to recall something else as she recollects what she knows.

pulling out a parchment from her pouch, A friend of mine from Bard's Gate. one of my roommates at the Academy actually, just sent this, It seems she is investigating some Orcus cult uprising in someplace called "The City of Ashes" I wonder if these two things are connected.

Giving a moment for that to register, Janna turns to the Priestess, Shandril, we brought in a possible slaver that is using her political influence with the Golden Palms trading company to escape Justice. while we deal with this Orcus, infestation, could you please look into this little political cover-up?

Shandril nods. "Tell the Deputy we will deal with this slaver later. My first concern is recovering the crucible. Without it, the harvest will fail."

Shandril listens intently to Leoven and Janna's comments on the finer points of the cosmology and theology regarding demon's and devil's.

"I'm afraid I do not know very much about the distinctions between the various fiends and their allegiances. First I was a warrior, when I was young, and as long as I have been a priestess I have been concerned with the practicalities of day to day life. Someone of my station should surely know more about the evils of the outer planes, but an age has passed since such things effected this world, and so it is that my thoughts have stayed closer to home. Feeding the hungry, that has been my task. Now it seems I may have been amiss, once again. Kath, the priest of Bowbe in the shrine next to mine, is no scholar either, but he did see the thief itself with his own eyes. He called it an imp. And Herl, the ranger, saw this same symbol on a flag at the keep..." She points again to the unholy symbol that the thief dropped as it escaped with the crucible. "That is all I know."

Catching the last part of the conversation, Sam casually mentions: "It is nice to have figured out all the world's mysteries. I am still studying them. The more I know, the more I find out I don't know!!"

Sam produces his theatrical kit that can quickly transform the look of those he applies the arts of disguise to, and, after quick reflection, turns to Damien. "If you wish to expand your horizons, you are invited to a night of being anyone other than the pensioned soldier."

If Lannet agrees, Sam begins the fine art of disguising themselves to explore the town in the guises of others. He seems curious to see if the Damien will be joining them. Pausing with a bit of what the ladies call makeup, but Sam knew that disguising the appearance of the eyes and the lines around the upper face was 90% of altering ones appearance.

I am wondering if DMG can confirm this theatrical anecodote I have heard.

Sam is at the inn, but is confused.
"We want days to rest and recover, but when I suggested restoring the baby, a few days was too much. I would hope we leave tomorrow to fix this crucible thing, or spend one day here at most."

Sam takes the silver sword and looks at it, appreciating the shine.

And Sam will be visiting the wizard/cat tonight.

The Cask and Flagon is cheaper and less clean then the Cockatrice. Glarian's place has three luxurious stories, this place has only 8 rooms for rent upstairs, one of them already occupied by Lannet, another by Feriblan.

The innkeeper is an elderly man named Tamen. The inn itself is poorly maintained and consists of a large common room with a fireplace, a large kitchen and a storage room in the rear. The food is substantially worse than the Cockatrice. The common room has four booths along one wall with curtains that can be drawn for privacy. Tamen’s four dogs sleep on the floor of the common room and beg at customers’ feet for table scraps at meal times. To the side of the room, a set of railed stairs allows access to the upper level where the eight individual rooms are located. Each room is locked and only the lodger has the key — even Tamen does not keep a spare.

Tamen says Feriblan has not been back to the inn since the day he checked in.

Lannet nods at Damien's description of an orange tabby cat. That's the one he saw going to Feriblan's room.

Janna recognizes the name Feriblan.

Feriblan:
Some twenty years later, a young apprentice named Janna learned of Eralion accidentally. During her final days of tutelage, Janna and her master had traveled to the library of Feriblan the Mad in the city of Reme. Janna was never pleased to visit Feriblan, for while there she was always forced to have contact with Vortigern, Feriblan’s apprentice, and his loathsome raven familiar — Talon. Luckily for Janna, this day she managed to avoid Vortigern. While perusing mundane documents in an outer sitting room as her master and Feriblan studied ancient scrolls, Janna nervously fiddled with a clasp on the back of a small reading stand. Quite to her surprise, a secret compartment opened which contained a small, bound piece of parchment and an item wrapped in silk cloth. Checking to see that her actions were unobserved, Janna slipped both items into the folds of her robe. The parchment proved to be the letter Eralion had left for Feriblan on his last visit before his ritual, and the item wrapped in the silk cloth an amulet of some unknown design.

The man Lannet and the innkeeper saw checking in under the name Feriblan was a young man, and not too obviously a wizard. The Feriblan Janna remembers was elderly, completely senile, and very obviously a stereotypical wizard.

Cask and Flagon:
Well if Sam's coming back that makes this easy.

Damien nods to Tamen, "Ah well, thanks for your time.", he tosses the man a silver as thanks.

"I suppose you'll be returning to your room, Lannet? We're more than like shipping out in the morning. I guess we'll see you when we see you...try not to charge anymore angry half-orcs."

With a last nod, he heads back to the Cockatrice with the Deputy, "Damn me, but I'll almost miss the little bastard."

At the Inn, Damien nods as the others return, "About time. Jerrid says Shandril's in hot water again? Someone stole her bowl...for real this time?"

As Kev takes a seat, Damien hands her the last of his purchased shortswords, "A little insurance, in case the halfling's right about vamps...or more rat-men for that matter."

To his surprise, he nods at Sam's comment, "Aye. I'd like to be gone early tomorrow. We were hired to do a job and I'm well sick of delays."

Leoven remains Silent most of the time, partially because that is how he is but also because try to figure out why and Imp would have a symbol of Orcus in its possession.
