Day 11 At the Tafganor encampment

Initiative order:
Calex – 23
Poseus - 20
Riku – 18
Camp – 17
Mina –

Stepping out from behind a tree, Calex fires his crossbow toward the Tafganor standing by the opening in the wall of the compound.

The sound of the springing of the steel and the “thunk” of the bolt, as it strikes the ground several yards in front of the enemy, are unmistakable.

With shouts the Tafganor point toward Calex, and then look as if they are ready to charge him…

The sound of the shouting Tafganor, draws the attention of the other Sashi-Anhain and Tafganor in the camp, who look in that direction, but stay at their assigned posts. With them distracted momentarily, Poseus and Dieredon sprint toward tents that are adjacent to the prisoners.

Now if only there was some way of getting the last of the enemies to move off toward the south…

Riku peers out from the cover of his tree and sees that the bestial men are coming this way, at a full run!

The closest Tafganor will reach square S, -18 this round

Mina sighs softly, and hopes that those inside were sticking to the plan and getting people out.

She releases her built up magic, entangling the orcs in the vegetation near their camp. She tries to aim the spread to make both forward and back poor choices, but focusing on getting the orcs out of the camp rather than locking them in. The sickening entangle that will follow will be to prevent them from giving chase.

Apologies, it's DC 15. Her sickening entangle will be DC 16. This means that one of the orcs is free to move this turn (though he's still delayed by difficult terrain.

Mina watches for a moment. The spell had succeeded against most of them. Good. She'd wait, quietly, as she steadily worked to remember the spell to make things much worse if they pressed forward once more.

Poseus looks to his inventory, but doesn't find anything heavy enough to make a sound to draw the last ones away, he looks to Dieredon with a face meaning. You got a plan? He points towards the guards and making a move like hurling something to distract them.

He looks around to see if there's a loose stone he could throw over the wall to create a loud sound.

NPC: M, I

Looking directly at Poseus, D’ieredon lowers his bow, and makes a gesture meaning he intends to draw the attention of the remaining guards, and the with his fingers D’ieredon makes as if a little man is running away. Poseus can only interpret this to mean that D’ieredon intends to draw them away, by getting them to chase him out the east gate. Though he knows he is much faster in the water, Poseus realizes he will to move faster than he has ever moved before if he intends to reach the prisoners and free at least a few of them before the guards realize the ruse.

D’ieredon will shoot a guard with his bow, then turn and run for the east gate. The target is the Orc in B,

There are two orcs watching the goings on outside of the south gate, at the tent where Poseus is hiding, and D'ieredon stands tall, draws back on his bow and lets an arrow fly

Ranged attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Startled by the arrow piercing his side, the orc spins and takes a staggered step, with a shout he alerts those around him and point at the attacker.

D'ieredon makes a rude gesture, turns and begins running, but not quickly, toward the east gate.

The remaining guards give chase.

Round 2…

Watching from a distance, it appears to Mina, at first that all the enemy warriors are trapped by her spell, and then she sees one individual, to the side of the main body of the group, struggling with all he’s got to move out of the area of the spell’s effects.

Calex fires another crossbow bolt into the thick tangle of the vegetation. The heavy quarrel cuts the upper arm of one of the villains, before disappearing into the brush.

When Poseus sees D’ieredon lead a few of the Tafganor away from the prisoners, he slides out from behind the tent where he was hiding, and immediately comes face to face with the wounded Tafganor pierced by D’ieredon’s arrow, and then a male Sashi-Anhain, comes out of the tent yelling

What is all this noise!

Looking past him, Poseus sees Tanisinda*, a young Gymnaga girl of his village, lying on the ground in the tent, trying to cover herself with a blanket, she appears to be naked. Her face is stained with tears, and there is dried blood below her nose.

Poseus has gotten the drop on the two, the wounded Tafganor and the startled Sashi-Anhain (he does not reach the area where the rest of his villagers are being held – there are no cages, his friends and family are chained at the waist, painfully tight, and the chains are attached to stakes driven into the ground) – What will Poseus do?

Riku is up, the the monsters will take actions, three are chasing D’ieredon, two are engaged with Poseus, the rest are either trapped in Mina’s spell, or so far, unaccounted for

* Tanisinda, is the younger sister Piliteus Lomaniseae, who is married to Haluna Lomaniseae and they have two children. She lives with this family as she is not yet old enough to take a husband of her own, and they shared there house with Piliteus’ older brother Janeus (deceased), and Lomaniseaes’s sister Natharinsa (Lomaniseae’s first husband did not come with these families to MacNorra House)

Gymnaga Naming convention:
– A family is lead by a female of child bearing years. Her name given at birth will be the family name, and is often spelled differently than her childhood name, adding an –“ea” to the end of the first part of her childhood name. When she marries she takes a spousal name given to her by her husband and only he uses that name and only when addressing her (Thus Vesuna Rosilindeae). When a Gymnaga woman has had two, or sometimes three children, she will often release her husband, so that he may take a new wife (female births greatly outnumber male births in gymnaga communities), she will often raise the children while they are young, but when they are older they are as likely as not to live with either their mother or their father (Thus even though Alinda is Rosilindeae’s daughter by birth, she has been living in her father’s house, and treats his new wife like her mother most of the time). Sometimes a Gymnaga woman will take a second husband, and when she does, she will add an –e to the end of her name. Often this is a companion like relationship, but it is not uncommon for an older Gymnaga woman to have children with her second husband.
All young Gymnaga are given a childhood name, and until they are married are often addressed by this name and the name of their father (thus Alinda Colinara). Males keep this name into their adulthood (usually, but it is not uncommon for men who do not marry to change their names so as to not be bound to any family). A Young Gymnaga woman will drop her father’s name when she is married, and take on a special spousal name, given to her by her husband, and these names do not transfer from one generation to another.
It is becoming more common for young Gymnaga (males and Females) to adopt more common Urandoman style names (thus Alinda refers to herself as Alinda Carpenter, her father is a carpenter and she is trying to fit in more closely with her Woodbridge neighbors).

Meanwhile, in Castletown…

The journey to Castletown was easier than she expected. To her good fortune, Patricia found Marwan, the fellow who lives in the marshes, alone, to the west northwest of Woodbribge, was in his home as she was passing by. Once she explained to him the danger, he agreed to come with her to Castletown. Marwan was one of the few settlers from Alodoa who owned a wagon and a pony, even if it was small, it would be useful in bringing back supplies.

And even more good luck came her way when there wasn’t any rain and the night sky was clear when they camped just seven miles from Castletown. They could have pressed on through the night, but Patricia didn’t want to take any chances with the wagon getting stuck in a bog, or break an axel or wheel in the dark.

On the morning of the seventh day after the Spring Festival Day 10 of the campaign calendar Patricia and Marwan walked into the eastern quarter of Castletown. Here there were farms and homesteads, mostly belonging to Alodoan settlers, and a small clump of buildings where Hillary and Harry Ilyiomearra operated the “Rising Sun,” an Inn that Patricia knew well.

Rather than stop at the Inn, Patricia pressed on, into Castletown, and crossed the Shell Penny Bridge, and went straight to see the widow of the Governor, Lord Caliorus Anticus (she knew what had happened from Calex and D’ieredon’s tale).

When Patricia explained who she was, and where she was from, to Georgiana, the Keeper of the grounds, she was shown to Danielle Anticus. Danielle is troubled by Patricia’s description of what happened at the Gymnaga-folk settlement near Woodbridge, and even somewhat intrigued (she expresses that she has never met one of the Gymnaga-folk, as they have not visited Castletown since she has lived here. Moved by the plight and possible danger to the people of Woodbridge, Danielle promises to send a small platoon of soldiers, under the command of a Lieutenant she tells Patricia is named Hector Pavicar, from Harrispania. Danielle promises that the platoon will be ready to leave the morning of the next day. She then asks Patricia why D’ieredon did not report this news himself, and when Patrricia explains that D’ieredon and Calex, as well as a few others from Woodbridge, set out to track the position of the Tafganor and Sashi-Anhain army, the lady of the castle stands up out of her chair, and expresses concern for their safety. She then promises to send a messenger north, to Pelican Bay to alert the Alodoan army stationed there of the danger.

When Patricia is dismissed, she is relieved that at least some help will be on the way to Woodbridge tomorrow, but she knows it is not enough.

It is only just a little after noon in Castletown, and Patricia is determined to find more help for the village, and she sets her sights on the northern quarter of Castletown, looking for a printer. Patricia carries all the money she has saved in her life, it is only sixty gold coins, and one hundred thirty silver coins, all Urandoman, but it is enough to pay the printer to press twenty fliers that proclaim, in bold letters, Woodbridge’s plight, and a request for volunteers. The only payment offered is a promise of food and board, and the gratitude of the citizens of Woodbridge.

Standing on the High stone platform in the center of the intersection of market Street and North Quarter Way, Patricia is handing out fliers to anyone passing by, and calling out Woodbridge’s need and the danger to everyone from Woodbridge even to Castletown, if the Tafganor army isn’t stopped.

A few Alodoans stop and take her flier, but those in the street who are Urandoman, laugh at her and call her crazy for suggesting a Tafganor Army even exists.

Marwan, not accustomed to this kind of attention getting at all, stays in the shadows off the corner of North Quarter Way, beside a Cobbler’s shop, his wagon parked in the alley behind him. He watches as Patricia pleads with passersby

Marwan shrugs and rolls his eyes.

There's fighting everywhere. Hoping to step into a new place and magically find peace is outrageous. Every people has their own conflicts, and they'll continue to exist long after us newcomers have died or moved on.

He steps forward. He's tall and quite thin, his gaunt face oddly offset by a thick, well-maintained beard cut into a square shape coming straight off his chin. Around his neck is an odd-looking amulet shaped like a crude person and made of some sort of leather, stuffed with dirt. His clothes are long and flowy in unusual colors, clearly for hotter climates. His accent is odd, sounding almost like he were singing staccato.

I do not know of any place in the world totally without conflict, and I understand Tafganor have little respect for proper scheduling.

Woodbridge. It's a town that Anima had heard of in the past, but never been to. Today, that was about to change.

The short, blond halfling sat inside of her small covered wagon, a giant clay water jug on her left and a strange pink, fleshy creature to her right. The creature's head bore two large, flat eyes, and lips as large and round as a koi's. Its thin, smooth body bore no fur, only flesh, and was adorned with two large, furless bat wings. A long, simian tail sprouted from its back, and it's front legs had the hands of a monkey- opposable thumbs, five fingers, and a padded palm. It was currently receiving a much needed bath.

This strage creature was Anima's best friend and familiar, Feo.

With a final pour of water over the simian, Anima guided the creature to her shoulder, and slid skillfully out of her wagon to the dust covered ground. Checking to make sure that her guard dog was well fed and her ponies securely tied, Anima assured herself that she could rest at ease. It was time to enter Woodbridge.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------

"Ah, your bread smells lovely here! It's stone-ground, correct?"

"That's right, miss, and we bake it the day we sell it. No stale bread from this shop!"

It had been a busy morning of checking the marketplace for items neccessary to continue her travels. Anima was running low on food.

"I'll take a loaf, then!"

She pressed a coin into the modestly dressed salesman's hand, simultaneously placing the warm bread into her backpack. Feo shifted on her shoulder, and she felt a hand sliding down her back. "Feo, we can enjoy the bread later. We only came to this town to stock up on supplies, remember." She heard a sigh from her companion (more of a gurgle, but Anima had long since figured out what the noise met), and stopped in her tracks. "It is getting close to high sun time; maybe we can have share a small slice of it..." Anima trailed off, and felt the damp, sticky touch of Feo pressing his forehead to her cheek. Pleased to see that Feo was excited for the treat, she searched for a bench or crate to sit down on while she and Feo ate. While searching, though, she heard the nervous voice of a woman calling out into the crowd.

"The Army is upon us! Please, we need to start preparing now if our town is to be saved!"

Curious, Anima temporarily ceased her search for a seat, and headed toward the voice, Feo acting as a sensor of sorts, his head tilting toward the piercing voice above the dull roar of the crowd.

Finally, Anima stumbled upon the source of the call, a woman already being confronted by a tall male human. Anima had to tap the woman's side to get her attention, her small size making her impossible to notice among the legs of the other market-goers.

"Excuse me, ma'am, why are you crying out as if a plague is about to kill us all?"

Patricia is about to respond to Arvid, when she feels a tug on her pants leg. When she looks down, she meets they eyes of an Alodoan, one of the halflings, as she knows they are called.

Be careful, Patricia reminds herself, these Alodoan’s have far more tricks up their sleeves than their looks would indicate.

I’m not, I’m, look I’m only asking for volunteers to come to Woodbridge to help us complete a fence around the village, and should things get worse, to defend the village as best we can until the regular Alodoan army from Pelican Bay can get her, and that’s probably one, maybe two months depending on the weather and the availability of ships at the harbor of Prince Oliver Sound. We have…

NPC: F Alodoan/Human(?) Wizard 9

Before Patricia can finish her sentence, a tall, attractive human woman, flanked by four other humans (three men and one woman, all dressed in uniforms, but not the uniforms of the Alodoan Army) steps through the crowd and raises her voice.

Can someone explain to my why there is a mob forming in the street outside of my residence.

Marawan:
You are shocked, and taken aback. It would never have crossed your mind, but then again it was only a matter of time, wasn’t it? A little over a year ago the Church of the Septumberate took control of the government of Vurespania, taking advantage of the turmoil created by the failed Baravkovian succession, and now, here in Castletown, the very remotest part of the Empire, you are seeing four soldiers of the Opal Knights, in broad daylight. Why are they with this woman? Who is she? Does she have a connection to the Church? Maybe it is better if you don’t know the answers to these questions

I’m sorry, Patricia says as she takes a step toward the tall woman. I was told at the castle that I could distribute some fliers and ask for volunteers for the defense of my Village. I didn’t think it would create such a crowd. I’ll go.

She then turns to the crowd, and then looking down smiles at the halfling, and says. I’ll be staying at the Rising Sun, it’s an Inn to the east of here, on the Four Mile Road. She then looks all around and adds, Anyone willing to help us, I’ll pay for a room for the night at the Rising Sun for you. We leave in the morning at dawn. Thank you.

While far to the southeast of Castletown, Poseus, Calex, Riku, and Mina, attempt to liberate the Gymnagaopthians taken by the Tafganor and Sashi-Anhain army…

Day 11 afternoon At the Tafganor encampment

Initiative order:
Calex – 23
Poseus - 20
Riku – 18
Camp – 17
Mina – 16

Round 3…

Riku loads and aims his crossbow the same villain struck by Calex’s missiles, but his aim is off by yards.

Inside the boundary of Mina’s spell the other Tafganor and Sashi-Anhain continue to try to break free

Strength, R_T: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Strength, R_SA: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Strength, O_SA: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

One of the Tafganor breaks free and struggles to reach the perimeter of the entangling vegetation

When Two Sashi-Anhain rush toward Poseus

Round 4...

Edit, I completely missed Poseus post, and it was exactly what I'd hoped he'd do! However he is posting slightly ahead of my round count so I may be a bit confused

Poseus rushes them first, shouting to Tanisinda to get to the others and help them. He drives his spear right through one of the foul Sashi-Anhain, so fierce is his attack that he pushes the attacker back a full five feet. The second Sashi-Anhain watches in terror as Poseus removes his spear and the body of the enemy falls limp to the ground. Dropping his weapon, the other Sashi-Anhain, throws up his hands and screams,

{b]Don't kill me, I surrender[/b]

Tanisinda rushes toward the prisoners as fast as she can travel, and she reaches leto just as she is trying to pull up the huge stake in the ground

Leto:
It will take a Strength Check, DC 20 to pull up the stake, you can convince at least two of the others near you to help, if you succeed on a Diplomacy Skill Check, DC 10+, their help without me rolling, will grant you a +4 to your strength check if you can convince them

Marwan looks down at the short newcomer.

Oh, she must be a halfling. Not unusual, I understand, but I've never seen one.

Judging from what I hear of Tafganor hygiene a plague is not a bad analogy...

Upon the appearance of Sabrinelle, his demeanor changes. At first he looks thoroughly annoyed, then he grins slightly.

I suppose once they built a stable base of operations it was only a matter of time before they branch outward to the rest of the empire. But this is quite a ways away from Vurespania. No reason not to have some fun, though.

We are here to speak the virtues of rural living and small-town economics. Did you know that cities produce crime and spread disease?

Due to the number of seperate actions going on at once it might be wise to keep headers so everyone can know who is talking to who.

At the Tafganor encampment

Leto grips and releases the chain on his waist once before nodding.
"Alright, as you can see many of our own are fighting out there to help us. They are worried about the lot of you and will be able to fight without distraction once all of us are out of here. So, are we going to wait for someone to come save us or are we going to take advantage of the distraction provided to save ourselves? Those with me, I'll count three and pull on the stake. Help best as you can."

The lizard man grips the chain, coiling as much as he can to gather to provide a handle. However the pains of captivity and complaints of weakness in his arms prove too loud to remove the weighty stake.

I completely missed Poseus’ post above and have edited my post at the Tafganor Encounter, I hope, in a way that keeps things correct – If you are in battle, it will help me to put a header in your post that tells me what round, you think it is – Thanks, and good idea Leto!

In Castletown – Day 10

The four, armed “mercenaries” keep their expression as blank as stone, when Marwan speaks, but lady Sabrinelle, reacts differently. Her head snaps toward Marwan, a look, a strange look crosses her face, and then it is gone, she smiles and say

You’ve obviously not lived in the right cities, but that’s not uncommon, here. Many, ‘localines’ are filled with bad information that must be corrected with the proper educationorre

Sabrinelle uses a couple of words in an old Vurespanian Dialect, and her particular use of the word, educationorre, is meant to signal you that she is not happy in the company of these people, and that she must be careful what she says

I'll assume Leto spend round 3 convincing the other Gymnaga to help him and then spent his action on round four pulling the stake when everyone was ready. Unless Tanisinda's help increases the numbers I'm at Leto is going to try the same thing again on round 5.

"Ah, a shining knight arrives to save us. Hrmmm.. don't think i'm pretty enough to be a princess though. It'd be great if you could give us a hand with this thing though." The gymnaga says in a good natured tone, tinged with worry.

Round Four

Mina continues to take her time with her own spell, still confident in the verdant strength of the earth, as Calex moves to layer his own spell into the mix. She doesn't really feel the need to respond to just the two orcs yet, either, and maintains her concentration on the situation, and the spell she intends to loose upon them, should they free themselves.

The worst part of it all was how hopeless it looked to be for the majority of the orcs. The fact that she was going to add a more terrible version to those few that escaped was not lost on her. It was a shame the plan was falling to pieces... And seemingly without reason, but there was little she could fault the others for. They were doing what they believed best. Hopefully the infiltrators were having some degree of success. Trusting them was easily for the best. They'd call out if they needed aid, and Mina would have them covered one way or the other.

Meanwhile, Anima listened to the humans chatter, and interjected once family was brought up. "Alfred, right? Did your family move? Where are they now?"

Poseus looks to the Sashi-Anhain with disgust, his mind overflowing with feelings of vengeance for his kin and the need to not turn into a monster himself. The conflict is evident in his actions. He couldn't understand the the language, but he understood the gestures.

He raises his spear, aiming to pierce the Sashi-Anhain on the spot, then lowers it, slightly disgruntled.

He barks at a hushed tone at the cowering enemy before him.
"Go! Move now! Talagos knows your kind deserves very little. Perhaps a show of mercy will get into those thick skulls of your kin."

He taps the snakeman with a shapr tap against its head.
"Move!" He points at the other Gymnaga prisoners. "You're gonna help them out."

meanwhile, a day earlier, in Castletown, on the way to the Sunset Inn

Redhill, hmmm? I remember a Redhill family living Lakeside, before I left to travel to the north. That was, oh, fourteen or fifteen years ago I think. Wait, you’re Alfred, Alfred Redhill, sure I know you. I left Woodbridge right after you did, right after that, well, let’s not talk about that. I think everyone was put out by the floods and they way everything was done wrong to try and protect Lakeside the year before. We should have listened to the Maetaur then, but we didn’t. We lost more than half the fields on the north side of Lakeside that year. Anyway, let’s get to the Sunset Inn.

Patricia leads the small group to the Sunset Inn, where Hillary Ilyiomearra greats the group as they come in, it is early evening, or late afternoon, and the place is already filling up with farmers and laborers from around this part of the city (what is called the Eastern Quarter), which is actually a good walk away from the river, and the tightly packed buildings of downtown Castletown. Here, in the Sunset Inn, Elves and Humans, of Alodoan descent, mingle with a few Urandoman humans, after a hard day of farm work. The Inn can sleep many guest, usually people stay the night here on their last day in Castletown before setting out for towns south and east, but tonight, there are only a couple of guest and Hillary has many rooms available. Tables are pushed together, while wagons and carts are secured outside. Animals are taken to the barn behind the Inn, to be cared for by one of the young boys always hanging about.

With that Leto glances over to the young female gymnaga Tanisinda...? She is much less of a child now. Still a little bit though.
"Tanisinda?" the gymnaga asks waiting for the young one to turn and acknowledge her name.
"While we get these chains dealt with I could seriously use my bag. It is in the tent to the south of us. If I can get to it I have several potions and other tricks that would be very helpful for this. my clothes should be in there as well."
