She nods."Indeed. Should someone ever say that firebirds aren't perceptive creatures, I'll have to set them straight." she says, with a raised eyebrow.

Jaiye |

Jaiye is still kneeling on the floor, shell-shocked as she tried to process what just happened. Tyrrin was back. She was alive. She was going to be okay. But Ehos....she couldn't even process it yet. Just numbness. She didn't move at all until Tyrrin was gone and then she turned to Ephebe. "Can you bring him back?" she asked, hardly daring to hope, but not able not to at the same time. But those hopes were dashed when she saw the look of pity and regret cross Ephebe's face.

Ephebe |

Ephebe shook her head. She was already almost fully healed, between Ace's spell and her own regeneration. Her expression turned solemn now that she wasn't concussed. "I'm sorry," she said again. "I can't. He was dead from the moment he was plugged into the machine. I know it didn't look like it because the machine kept his soul anchored in place. It's hard to tell the difference between that and actually alive. But the point is that the machine was anchoring his should in place....right up until it blew up. There's....there's not enough left to reconstruct.....I'm sorry. I can't bring him back. No one can."

"Ace" |

After Ghalen and Ty teleport back to Avalon, Ace finally lets the rest of what happened hit him. Ehos was gone, and according to Ephebe, there was no bringing him back. I'm so sorry Jai. I tried to do everything I could to save Ehos, but that sick man was determined to punish him and Tyrrin. I'm sorry my fiend."
Whatever guilt Ace might have been feeling over what he did to the chancellor is currently replaced with anger and hate towards what he did to Ehos, Ty and Jai.

Jaiye |

Jaiye felt like she had had the wind knocked out of her. She couldn't breathe. It wasn't fair....but life never was. She reached up to her wrist. It was almost easy to forget the succubus was even still there since Fei had gagged her. She snapped the manacle open, letting her hand fall back into her lap, not even looking at the demon. "I guess we both lose this time," she said dully.

Ephebe |

"It wasn't about them. Not specifically. He just wanted to take down the wards. There's another timeline where he isn't found in time. The machine goes off. He had to find a different way to make it work because in that timeline I didn't...." She sighed, shoulders slumping a little. "In that timeline I didn't hook them into the planetary wards. I didn't go back and give the aschen the instructions to make it happen. In that timeline the whole planet died. So I did go back and I did change things, but it wasn't supposed to end like this. I was supposed to get here before anyone was hooked into the machine. I hit some....turbulence or something on the way and it knocked me off course. I was too late. I knew it was a risk, but the whole planet was going to die and I thought.....I was arrogant. I thought I could do this without anyone having to die. I got it wrong."

"Ace" |

Ace looks to Ephebe "Is there nothing to that can be done? I know there's some incredibly powerful divine magics that could bring one back even without a body, but they are beyond my capabilities."

Ephebe |

Ephebe shook her head. "No, I can cast those. If it's beyond me, I could ask my mate to do it. But you have to have a soul to bring back. There isn't one. And I can't just grab the alternate timeline version and bring him here either. I can go between, but I can't bring anyone else with me. It breaks things."
Her eyes narrow a little as she looked at him, as if she were squinting to see something more clearly. "Oh," she said, her sorrowful expression changing a little, a flash of anger there and gone again, and for a second he could have sworn her eyes turned gold, but they changed back again too quickly to be absolutely certain. "Well. Now I know what I hit on the way here," she said, her mouth twisting into an expression of distaste. "Look, it's not personal, and I don't hold you responsible at all, but you tell your boss that I will never work with her again. On anything. Trusting her info was a long shot. I shouldn't have. It won't happen again."

Fei, of the Sun Soul |

The conversation is briefly interrupted by an unceremonious 'thud' as Fei steps over to the succubus with purpose and knocks her out cold before she can even think of fleeing or causing further trouble after Jaiye unshackles her. Sparing a few more nanites to help keep the demon unconscious, he turns briefly back to Ephebe.
"While I have questions I would like answered, now is not the time for this discussion."
He kneels down next to Jaiye, facing her. The young monk knows he cannot just exclude her from what must come next, but it pains him to have to ask it of her nonetheless.
"I will go to the High Seer and...tell her what has happened. Do you wish to come with me, or return to Avalon and be with Tyrrin?"

She looked up when he spoke to her, not having reacted at all when he subdued the succubus. She didn't have any attention left to spare for that creature now. Her expression settled into one of determination. "I will go with you. Tyrrin has Ghalen with her. She'll be alright for now."

Fei, of the Sun Soul |

The young monk nods, grabbing the unconscious succubus as he stands up. Fei hoists her over his shoulder as more nanites bind her wrists and ankles for easier transport.
"I...am ready when you are," he says after taking a centering breath.

"Ace" |

Ace waits until Fei and Jaiye have left before voicing his concern to Ephebe. "Are you saying that I'm somehow to blame for you not arriving in time to save Ehos?" He asks in a tiny voice, unsure he wants to actually hear the answer, but knowing he must.

Ace waits until Fei and Jaiye have left before voicing his concern to Ephebe. "Are you saying that I'm somehow to blame for you not arriving in time to save Ehos?" He asks in a tiny voice, unsure he wants to actually hear the answer, but knowing he must.
Ephebe shook her head and pinched the bridge of her nose. "Sorry, no, I guess I wasn't being that clear. I've never been bumped off target before and it's left me a little loopy. Not you. Your patron. She offered 'help' ...well, not directly of course. That's against the rules. The last champion....no, maybe two back? Kallish something or other. I don't know. It was like three thousand years ago last week next Tuesday. She gave me information. To help divert this timeline from certain destruction. Presumably. But she wasn't being on the up and up. She bounced me off target. This wasn't the plan. It wasn't supposed to end like this," she said, scowling. "They're supposed to stay clear. Literally my job is to run amok and change things in the hopes that I find the right things to give this particular universe a chance against what's coming. It's what they made me for. I don't know why your patron decided to interfere with that. I mean, what's the point?" she added, throwing up her arms in frustration.

Fei, of the Sun Soul |

Activating his Starcaster,Fei transports himself, Jaiye and the catatonic succubus back to the festival grounds, a few yards outside of the pavilion where the High Seer had set up her ad-hoc command post. He bows briefly to the first batch of guards that come up after their arrival, as nanites on the demon move to cover her eyes and ears to neutralize those senses.
"This succubus needs to be charged for crimes against the High Seer's office and family," he states plainly, "and needs to be be remanded to authorities capable of safely containing a demon."
"We also need to speak to the High Seer immediately and in private...regarding the Chancellor and his agenda."

Remembering just a few seconds too late that their appearances might be...somewhat disturbing, Fei quickly commands his nanites to return both his current garb and Jaiye's to their 'pre-attack' forms while they wait to be escorted to the High Seer.
This process also cleanses them of any blood, vomit and other materials inappropriate to wear when meeting a head of state. (=^_^=)

High Seer Denulia |

A pair from the group of guards hurry away, one into the High Seer's pavillion and another off towards a hurriedly erected containment area. The latter shortly returns with a pair of wooden manacles that carry a glossy sheen. The manacles are clapped around the succubus' wrists before she is led away.
Fei and Jaiye aren't waiting overly long as the other guard returns from inside the pavillion and begins to guide them inside. If he notices Fei's attempt to save their decorum, he does not mention it.
The inside of the pavillion is a strange juxtaposition of hurried movements, and calm. The High Seer herself observing a map of Laeren which appears to be magically updating in real time. No words are being exchanged, though several other important looking elves are clustered around the map.
The High Seee does not look up from her work, and you get the sense that there are conversations you are not privy to. Her telepathic voice is heard crisply and cleanly in both Fei and Jaiye's minds. ::You may skip any formalities. If you have tidings I would hear it.::

Fei, of the Sun Soul |

Reading the cue from the silent but focused elves in the pavilion, Fei drops his neural lace's mental shielding just in time to hear the High Seer's mental directive. The young monk looks over to Jaiye, then bows his head and closes his eyes.
::The Chancellor....had already ended Ehos' life by the time we got to his location, though we did not yet know it. Tyrrin survived and saved Laeren from destruction, but was seriously wounded in the process. I had Ghalen take her to Avalon to treat her injuries. She will...recover from them.::
He takes a steadying breath, his normal decorum failing him as his shoulders slump with the motion.
::I...am sorry, High Seer. We could not get to them both in time::
His eyes open, brow furrowing.
::The Chancellor wanted to bring down this world's defensive wards. I...do not yet know the whole purpose of his plan,:: the young monk continues, regaining his composure as he raises his gaze to meet the High Seer's (if she is facing them)...
::But I will.::

Jaiye |

Jaiye held herself very straight and very still. She felt....nothing. That would come later, she supposed. For now she was numb. She was happy to let Fei take the lead talking to the High Seer. She spotted the chancellor's spoiled children out of the corner of her eye, under guard near the edge of the group, and her expression softened a little. They were awful of course, but she understood what it was like to be betrayed by the ones who were supposed to protect you, and she recognized what they were going through right now. She considered speaking to them and discarded the idea. She was the last person they would be willing to receive advice from right now. So she waited.

Ace nods slowly in understanding. Well, partial understanding, as that whole timey whimey nonsense made no sense. "Okay, I think I get it, a little bit. You're like a cosmic handy woman, and for some reason Fate decided to throw the proverbial monkey wrench into your path. That screwed up your ability to get here at the right moment to save both Ehos and Tyrrin, which apparently makes no sense. Unless for some reason Ehos had to die? Could his death be setting something into motion that needs to occur, but for some reason, you weren't told. Or rather, couldn't be told? "
He pauses for a few moments, trying to wrap his head around all of this. "You said you bounce around timelines, right? What if that prevented somebody from telling you?"

GM Fireclaw |

Nods in a combination of thanks and acknowledgement at Fei as he takes Tyrrin, and activates his return token. Upon arrival, he takes her straight to the infirmary. To the first member of staff that he sees, he says "This student has been exposed to radiation, and needs immediate care."
Tyrrin is quickly rushed to the intensive care section, and if Ghalen attempts to follow, he is asked by the medical staff to remain outside until they can be sure Tyrrin is stable.

Ghalen Kiln |

Ghalen seems as if he is about to protest, but nods in understanding. "Please keep me apprised of her situation. She is very important to me." He'll watch her disappear into the infirmary, then take a seat in the waiting area.
"Fei", he says over the connection the monk set up, not knowing if it has the correct range or not, "Tyrrin is being seen to as we speak, but I am not allowed in the room with her. Please update the High Seer at your convenience. I will update when I know more."

Ephebe blew out a breath in frustration. "Okay, not usually how I handle things, but you're the Champion of Fate, so I'm guessing she'll tell you what's going on anyways. There's something out there eating the multiverse. Like, nibbling its way through various realities. Not even the Patrons can stop it. There are places I've been before that just aren't anymore. It's getting closer to this universe as time goes on. Sometime in the next five years it gets here. I can't be more specific because the equation changes every time I alter events. And I alter events a lot. It's what I was made for. They burned up dozens of realities to make me. The Patrons I mean. Hell, they murdered one of their own to do it. I mean, yeah, they brought him back recently, but that's the level of serious we're talking here. I'm not a handywoman. I'm a last resort. And they can't tell me how to fix things because they don't know. So I'm flying blind hoping every time that I'm doing the right thing to save the godsdamned universe. They agreed among themselves that they were gonna stay hands off and not interfere with me. But Fate....well, she just can't help herself, apparently. They're allowed to talk to me though. How would they avoid that? I mean, really. I'm married to the Champion of Death. Kinda hard to avoid communication there, ya know?" she said with a shrug. "But yeah, if Fate was willing to poke that bear and risk the wrath of the other Patrons, she probably had a reason. I don't know if it's a good one. The Patrons are more prone to going off the deep end the closer we get to the end of the universe, so there's been a lot of shenanigans lately. A lot."

High Seer Denulia |

It would take an expert in body language or someone who knew the High Seer very well to note to subtle changes in her posture. Her shoulders slump slightly. The air of power and presence she keeps about her diminishes just a touch. A small change in the way her jaw is set shows it to be clenched. When her telepathic reply comes it is calm and controlled to the point of emotionlessness.
::It is not a kindness to make promises you aren't sure you can keep, young Fei.:: is the High Seer's only reply for a long moment as she continues to observe the map and the flurry of motion and activity in the tent remains at a steady pace.
Suddenly the elves around the table begin speaking aloud at once, discussing what remains to do in the wake of the disastrous festival. The High Seer turns briskly to Fei and Jaiye and her eyes briefly flash white. The trio are carried away by the winds of magic.
A room elsewhere in Laeren comes into view, the wooden walls and architecture is unmistakable. All pretense in gone from the High Seer now as tears begin to flood her eyes. She looks as though all the weight of her long years has just come crashing onto her head. She sits gently on an uncomfortable looking chair and motions for Fei and Jaiye to sit as well, though their seats look more plush.
"I would hear more details. Is Agartha safe?" she manages through a constricted throat.

"I would hear more details. Is Agartha safe?" she manages through a constricted throat.
The young monk is unable to reply until their location has changed and the High Seer has seated herself, being taken as we was with her near-perfection in maintaining her composure until arriving at this room.
It is, however, just enough time to reflect on the sheer arrogance of his claim, as well as how that would give no comfort to a woman as wise as this who just lost her son.
"I...apologize, High Seer. I...spoke from anger at failing you, and you are right to condemn such behavior..."
He pauses (longer than he normally does with his usually methodical speaking), as his neural lace kindly reminds him that there were still nanites at the Chancellor's lair, where Ephebe and
Casilkasheyith were still speaking. Those nanites were still recording information...which he quickly plays back.
"...But I may still be able to honor that promise in some way. Casilkasheyith may be able to shed light on the Chancellor's motives due to...certain actions he took, and I now know of a larger threat as well..."
Fei then sums up, as briefly as he can, the essential details of the conversation between the other two Champions regarding the literal universal threat being discussed.

"Ace" |

Ace swallows hard, and is quite for several longs moments after Ephebe finishes her explanation. "I'm obviously very new to all of this, but I am very fond of living. I would prefer to continue to do so for a little longer than five or so years, if possible. What can I do to help, if anything?"

High Seer Denulia |

As Fei shares the details of the impending threat, the tears in the High Seer's eyes begin running down her face in earnest. She does not openly weep, but the tears do not stop dripping down as she quietly listens to Fei recount the doom of the universe.
Her voice is shaky when she finally speaks. "As terrifying as that is, we have a more immediate threat. We know the Empire is looking for us, and I suspect that Gomari's s--" her voice cracks in a suppressed sob. She takes a moment to collect herself before continuing: "I believe this event may draw Imperial attention Ryo and I may have to intervene. Which means I have greived all I can permit myself for the moment." she stands and wisps of magic dry her face and make her look presentable once again. "I must go to Avalon myself, will you come?"

Fei, of the Sun Soul |

The young monk concentrates for a moment, verifying that all of the people he had to restrain earlier in the day had been taken into custody
so and were no further threat. He then looks to Jaiye and nods solemnly before turning back to the High Seer.
"We will."

Jaiye |

Jaiye shakes her head and deliberately unclenches her hands from where she had been twisting the fabric of her skirt in an attempt to keep her cool. She took a deep breath. "Don't take this the wrong way, Fei, but you don't speak for me. And this conversation is not remotely over."
She turned her attention back to the High Seer, expression determined. "First of all, I call b+@+!&+*. Hey, I get it, I'd love to have something to smash too. But that doesn't make for smart decisions. Ephebe was pretty upset about the whole machine thing, but you know what she wasn't freaking out about? The Empire. You know when you know you actually have to worry about the Empire showing up? When the Sunwakes start panicking. She's not, ergo I'm pretty freaking sure we have a hot minute before that problem is actually urgent, so yeah, you can take a g+~%+!n hour to cry. You're owed that much, at the very least. And you're not going to be able to make wise decisions while you're so emotionally constipated you've gone numb," she said, crossing her arms and glaring in the universal signal for 'and I will tackle you if I have to to make this happen'. "Second, 'fight smart not hard'. How many times did you say that to me over the last week? Seriously, I lost count. You're a Seer, Faelwen. Act like it. Gather actual information before you go haring off to save the world. Wise use of resources and all that crap." Jaiye grimaced and straightened her shoulders even further. "Third thing has nothing to do with saving the universe or the world, which means it's important. The small things are always the ones that actually matter. When I go back to Avalon, I'm taking the demon baby with me. Ugh, okay, we really can't keep calling her that. Errr.....Selene. After the goddess of the hunt. Only deity both our people worship. Seems appropriate. So, okay, kid's got a name. That's a start. And no, I'm not taking her away from you. You're her grandmother and you should spend time with her. Regularly. But you're in the middle of a civil war, like it or not, and you have no idea who you can trust, and they've all had plenty of time to play musical pins. Taking care of a baby is a 24/7 kinda thing, and right now I wouldn't trust your staff to make breakfast, let alone take care of an infant. And that's before we get into the whole bigotry problem, which let's face it, is a huge deal and is a problem that's only going to snowball as Selene gets older. She doesn't need that crap. Seriously, these folks can barely tolerate each other. They're not gonna be nice to a baby succubus. At least not when you're not directly supervising them every bloody minute. And don't give me any crap about what Ehos would have wanted, because he didn't have clue one how he wanted to handle this. Changed his mind like five times a day, minimum. He's not here," she said, her voice cracking at that although her eyes remained stubbornly dry and her chest ached with a dull pain that had settled in for permanent residence. "I am. I can't change that. But this is something I can do. I can make sure Selene has as normal of a life as is possible given what she is. I can move forward with my plans as discussed. Don't worry, not taking the baby into battle. I'll make sure to schedule challenges during your turn for babysitting. Lycans have a longstanding tradition of adoption, so I crack enough heads and nobody questions who she belongs to. Of course, I break enough heads, and who the hell cares about tradition," she added with a shrug. "The point being, it's a lot easier to make a place for her with my people than it is with yours."

Ephebe |

Ace swallows hard, and is quite for several longs moments after Ephebe finishes her explanation. "I'm obviously very new to all of this, but I am very fond of living. I would prefer to continue to do so for a little longer than five or so years, if possible. What can I do to help, if anything?"
"For now? Learn your new abilities. Learn what being a Champion means. Learn about Fate. And for crying out loud, keep a close eye on her, and if she starts going all megalomaniacal, let me know right away. None of us need to be dealing with that kind of distraction right now."

Fei, of the Sun Soul |

Jaiye shakes her head and deliberately unclenches her hands from where she had been twisting the fabric of her skirt in an attempt to keep her cool. She took a deep breath. "Don't take this the wrong way, Fei, but you don't speak for me. And this conversation is not remotely over."
Fei bows apologetically to Jaiye for his assumptive words, but is inwardly relieved that she appears to have won past her shock and grief for the moment.
The young monk politely steps to the side for this new conversation.

High Seer Denulia |

There is a long moment of quiet as the inner conflict in the High Seer wages. Even when they had first come to the private chambers she had been mostly in-control. Now she looks tired and haggard, halfway between shouting at Jaiye and breaking down in tears herself. Her voice is hoarse and quiet when she finally speaks:
"I... admit that I was not entirely being truthful in my reason for wanting to visit Ryo. I had... sought to be comforted. In a position where I can allow myself to be vulnerable." Most of the flared anger is gone now, leaving the High Seer sounding exhausted. "I expect the pair of you will respect both mine and the Headmaster's privacy on this matter."
"As for the rest... I will not argue that Laeren is not ideal for a baby, demonic or otherwise, and that Avalon is more suited to help Selene." She walks gently over to Jaiye and opens her arms, offering an embrace in lieu of further discussion.

Hey Lyn, is there a Champion aura around Ephebe?

***AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT***
We are taking a temporary break from our normal storyline to get back into the swing of things. The following takes place at some indeterminate time that really doesn't matter as it doesn't actually effect any of the long term story at all and is just about having fun. Because much like the students at Avalon, sometimes the players need to just be silly for a while too. :)
So, without further ado, in a SIM room somewhere in Avalon Academy a bunch of students (and guests?) gathered for a bit of fun and competition......

James "J.J." Jones |

A middling height human enters the room and looks around. He's wearing giant headphones which you can hear blaring music at an unhealthy volume, even from this distance. The human has shoulder length brown hair. He is wearing the standard Avalon uniform, though all the colours have been retooled into brighter versions of the themselves, sometimes to the point of eye strain.
He's known somewhat around the school as a remixer of music, though when he's DJing he doesn't seem to be dancing to the music he's playing, his body catching a different beat. Even now he's tapping his foot to a different beat than the one which can be heard thumping through his headphones.
::Well hey everyone.:: his telepathic voice comes out smooth as silk. He signs the same to anyone who approaches.

![]() |

"Oh, Tsuyomi... san? Is that the right one? I tried reading up on the right things to say but they are a bit confusing still." He explains, looking a little embarrassed.[ "Yeah, I'm here to give it a shot. After that talent show I thought I could put all that other stuff I learned back home to use too."
::And hello to you too.:: He 'says' to the other contestant. He had gotten used to telepathy. It seemed really common here at Avalon and he had to admit sometimes it was pretty useful. When someone with it started the conversation anyway.

Vakkler Relkav |

Vakkler looks up sharply, hearing the explosions loud noises. "Like I said. This school is a nightmare."
He gives Settro a nod as he heads off to the teachers' lounge. "Welcome again, then. If you made it out of the Abyss, you just might make it here.
"Then again..." The kobold rounds a corner and heads out of sight.
Some time later, a high-pitched squeaking and clicking announces the approach of a teetering cart bearing three covered cauldrons. A tiny slurk sits proudly at the front, posing like the figurehead of a very slimy ship. Every now and then, sparks shoot out from the loudly sloshing containers. Whispers of the recently damned rise from the cart and echo through the hall, just barely too quiet to be understood no matter how hard one tries.
Vakkler Relkav trudges forward, mpshing the cart through the halls. With his peg leg, it's not an easy task, but the kobold did harder work during the war. Slarrow isn't helping, of course.
"Honestly," he grumbles, "I could swear I'm the only one here who ever bothers to clean up the teachers' lounge."

"It's moments like this that I wish Master Quo were still alive, although in all fairness I suppose 120 was a rather advanced age for a human. He would have been a much better teacher for you than I, but since I'm the last of my order I'll just have to do. Still, the next time we go to the temple for a weekend you should come along. There are many texts and illustrations of various techniques carved into the walls of the pyramid, and I think that studying them might be helpful for you."
Wow. Ten years to the day since this was posted. Wonder if I should finally do something with this....hm.

Midori Tsuyomi |

"Oh, Tsuyomi... san? Is that the right one? I tried reading up on the right things to say but they are a bit confusing still." He explains, looking a little embarrassed.[ "Yeah, I'm here to give it a shot. After that talent show I thought I could put all that other stuff I learned back home to use too."
Midori smiles at him while shaking her head. "You do not need to use honourifics, Dacamara-senpai. I just do not want to fall out of practice. It would not go over well at home. Thank you for thinking of me though." she beams at him. ^.^
