Engineering should not be at all applicable to computers, nanites, neural laces, and other cutting edge tech.
Try to fit any of those into this:
Engineering (buildings, aqueducts, bridges, fortifications)
That's from the PRD.
Create a new one called "Science".
Just a thought.

[Picks up Ye Olde Rules Mallet, Tests for Balance]
*Ahem*
The Dragonstar setting handles technology usage in a couple of ways...
Spoilered to Protect the Innocent:
As far as skills, they expanded Knowledge to include the following new specializations in high-tech settings (with the understanding that more could easily be added, of course):
- Astronomy
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
- Physics
They also created entirely new skills considered unique to urbanized, high-tech civilizations:
- Cryptography (Int/Trained only)
- Freefall (Dex)
- Navigate (Int; Essential for getting around in space)
- Research (Wis; for using modern libraries/ info databases)
- Urban Lore (Wis; Survival for cityfolk)
There are also several new skills that require a character to have the Technical Proficiency* feat in order to put ranks in them:
- Demolitions (Int/Trained only)
- Pilot (Dex)
- Repair (Int/Trained only)
- Use Device (Int); This is the skill for operating complex/specialized tech (computers, robots, sensors, etc.)
* Technical Proficiency is a general feat that allows you to use common high tech devices like communicators, and allows you to learn to use more complex tech like computers, weapons, vehicles, equipment, etc.
Now...I don't think Lyn, DB3 and I ever really discussed this (because it really wasn't necessary up until Agartha's planetary inversion debacle), but Avalon is obviously a high-tech school as well as a magic one.
It's plausible that non-tech students enrolled there and making an effort to learn/acclimate to technology would be able to pick this feat up and learn these skills. Given the widespread use of tech across the school, I don't think that wrecks game balance here. Lyn will have to give final judgment on that, though...
And that (for those who care) has been your Dragonstar 'Knowledge Smackdown' for the day. Enjoy (^-^)

Lurch: I'll let you decide. Vare doesn't have any fancy scanners or bonds with anyone present or anything like that which would allow him to have a pinpoint destination. Just a direction and distance from Kuros. He probably lands close, but not too close.
Fei: I imaging things like physics, biology, and chemistry knowledges aren't there to cover high school level stuff. Physics would be high energy stuff, lasers, quantum mechanics, etc. Yes?

I knew plenty of people in high school taking AP physics, biology, chemistry, etc....so not necessarily. ;)
But that's also why the writers encouraged folks to add other things, depending on campaign.

I think when we're working with just using and operating tech it works pretty well with Engineering.
This way our precious skill points aren't spread wide and thin in an attempt to cover all the things our character should be good at.
:)

GM Fireclaw |
3 people marked this as a favorite. |

Of course Tybs, the other end of that argument is that specializability is a good thing: if everyone can be a tech genius that build nanites and iron man suits with just 16 ranks in knowledge engineering, why wouldn't they?
Basically, having more choices in specializations will force more cooperation and teamwork, especially among the tech-oriented characters. It tells a better story if you can't do everything than if you can.

Cryptography I think is specifically computers oriented Salis. It's for hacking computer systems, encoding/decoding signals, etc.

Monkeygod |

Maybe a few Craft or Profs?, I see you don't have Appraise as well.
While at first it might not make sense, I would imagine somebody who has spent as much time studying things as Salis has should be able to then make a rough guess of how much something might be worth.

The Dalesman |

Correct. Cryptography is focused on encoding and deciphering computer data.

Salis of Bletherad |

unfortunatly the appraisal doesn't work becuase of numerous reasons. First being that he had rarly cared about money since most his life things were given to him order issued. And then only in the last few years has he started using money. On top of that reasorces and demand for things is vastly differnt than where he's from. Such as the elven wine him and Ori shared. He had no clue it was so hard to find. This becuase of a few reasons. Thus appraise doesn't really work.
Professions beyond soldier, guild leader, and monk which are represented differnt places, except guild leader (which I'm not really sure how to represent that.), within the character.
Crafts for the most part doesn't encompass things he can make. Such as medication. Which actually is covered in knowledge nature for herbology. Books are covered in lingustics. Ink he never has made it. He doesn't know how to make alchemy stuff, weapons, armor, or anything else metal.
So mainly just having trouble finding things not already covered somewhere else of that the origanal char had or could have learned while I played him.

Tybalt Baneko |

I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully she's just taking time off to give TLC for the kidlet.
*concerned emoticon I don't know how to make*

I apologize for worrying folks. Actually a bunch of you already have my email but I'll give it to any of you who want it if you don't already have it. Just send me a PM. Since I can answer email from my phone it's a pretty reliable way to get a hold of me. Anyway, yes, Tybs had it right. I was taking care of sick kidlet (He's kind of doing better with medication, but it's slow going since most food has stuff in it that makes it bad again...trying to find stuff that has low acid, no caffeine, no carbonation, no spice, and no dairy that he'll willingly eat...Ugh.) and catching up on sleep as much as possible. The whole experience has been somewhat similar to when he was an infant. I distinctly recall many afternoons where he would be screaming in pain and I would be crying hysterically because he wouldn't stop crying. The doctor back then called it colic which was as far as I can tell medical speak for 'we have no idea why your child is in screaming pain for two hours every afternoon'. His current diagnosis of gastritis isn't much better since it basically seems to be 'yeah, he has a stomachache, but we don't really know why'. *sigh* Well, at least the prescription antacid is reducing the pain enough that he gets sleep now. And after a couple days of dozing as possible we're somewhat close to being back to a normalish sleep schedule again.
Anyhow, I have a lot of reading to catch up on. I'll try to get responses up before I go to sleep tonight, but no promises.

lynora |

Kid ulcers perhaps?
Glad to hear of progress, Lynora. Hope you are rested, regardless.
That's certainly a concern of mine. I'm going to call his pediatrician tomorrow to give them an update and see when they want to see him again.
And I am at least rested enough to put together mostly understandable sentences now, which is definitely better than I was at the beginning of the weekend.

Hey Lyn,
My cousin Katelyn is(or at least was, when she was younger) extremely allergic to most everything.
One line of product I know her mom(my cousin Jen) bought for her was Rice Dream, which includes ice creams, and milks(I think).
Both Katie's mom, and Jen's sister Alison have much experience in alternate dieting, and medicine's along with other such stuff. If you want, I can talk to them bout tryin to help out the little guy with some suggestion of stuff he could eat.

lynora |

Thanks, Monkeygod. He's got problems with dairy since forever, although he can usually tolerate cheese and yogurt now. That was actually the cause of his colic as a baby. We use soy milk products instead for the most part since I have issues with dairy too. And he has a severe allergy to shellfish. One of the things I want to talk to his pediatrician about is how to go about figuring what else he might be allergic or sensitive to. Since this sort of thing doesn't just happen out of the blue for no reason. Trying to balance what my picky eater will actually eat and what won't make him sick is always the balancing act. And one that hasn't gotten any easier since he was a baby. :S

lynora |

you can test for topical allergic responses by controlled exposure, I don't know how the process goes for testing for allergies you eat goes
That test doesn't work. I had it done three times for me before we realized that my allergies (technically they have to be called a sensitivity because stupid reasons) to metal were invalidating the results. The tests for allergies in stuff you eat is all about trial and error and there are multiple different ways to handle it.

Capt Wombat |

Drake, its kind of a Anathema not The Magnate, :) look at that Cargo hold, stealth mining frigate yes!
Fitted with tech to mining lasers, yes its not so hot but I like the look of The Magnate/Anathema and Amarr ships as dwarf ships over Minmatar ships
also Carls ship is a scout/mining ship, eve mining ships are way to darn big, like the ORE-Retriever
Edit
You know I forgot about the Ore_Frigate Hummm

Like, okay- that weekend was o/~ AMAZING o/~!!!
Ooo..stud boy stand in handling the nerd talk, I love it!
:slaps T-Sam's fanny as a 'tag off':
Thanks, Tiger! Off you go now, make me proud! Jivana wants to see babies, lots!
Sooooo... How are we doing? Oh dear, kidlet feeling better is good. Hope Mommy-Lyn is resting too. Hugs!
None of you folks are linking pics of cute baby animals.
:pout:
Why not!? Only real meanies don't link kitty pics, you realize...
Humph. Oh, hang on. More orgy invites! They never stop! Gotta jet.
