Tales from the City of Opal

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This is my homebrew world Arcaia. This particular setting is the free city of Opal, a lush equatorial city set on the edge of an immense jungle rife with undead , ancient civilizations, and dinosaurs.

Perception Check. (1d20+5=16)

Jo:

Spoiler:
Jolessa hears a moaning in the dark. She hears the scuffle of foot on stone faintly and the smell is hard to ignore. Somewhere someone is dead, it's just a case of who and are they still moving?

Male Human Bard-2/Sorcerer-1 (Abberant Blood line)

Seven Eagle hears the maons and shuffling of the restless dead. In the darkened recesses of this eldritch temple the hungry dead wait to devour their souls

Ten:

Spoiler:
Peering over the shoulders of his teammates, Ten gets a good look in, and catches the glint of a weapon along the far corners of the room. The stench of zombies fills his nostrils. There's a pack of deaders about, looking for release

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

"Be ready! There are more of the foul zombies about!" San grips his greatsword, and mentally goes over his disrupt undead spell. Bring 'em on, he thinks.

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Ten looks uneasy at the mass of undead,"We going in to end their pitiful existence?"

Somewhere in the depths of the darkened room and sibilant chanting starts up. It sounds like an octopus strangling an iguana

For some inexplicable reason, Vilya begins giggling like a schoolgirl. It fails to lighten the bizarre atmosphere.

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

"Sounds like we better." says Izkrael.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan draws his bow, and nocks an arrow. If the zombies approach he will skewer a couple.

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Joleesa, Rapier in hand, quietly ducks around to the left of the door, skirting along the walls as she tries to get a better perspective of what's in the room.
Stealth Check. (1d20+10=15)
Perception Check. (1d20+5=14)
Stupid frickin' Invisible Castle...

Jolessa enters the room. The chanting stops suddenly and there is a sound of insectile legs skittering on the floor. She can see the zombies better now, they stand in a group along the walls, not moving, but swaying and moaning a bit.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

Alright, even San is a bit unnerved by the chanting and swaying zombies, as well as the chitinous sound of insects. He's going to pick up a few stones, start casting light on them, and toss into various corners of the room in order to get a better look.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan carefully studies the area around the Zombies to see if there are any wards or anything keeping them from advancing.

Perception (1d20+16=27)

Male Human Sorcerer 5

"This can't be good.", says Tobias as the chanting dies down.

Still back here with Ten. Knowledge(Arcana), did that chanting mean anything? 1d20+7=11

Male Human Bard-2/Sorcerer-1 (Abberant Blood line)

Seven Eagle takes a step back and inches towards the door behind them, his nerves are tense and cowardice seems to hold him, something about the gutteral language of the chanting reminds him of his dreams.

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Izkrael will move into the room, and step to the right of the door, blade at the ready.

The group advances towards the door. Jo hears the advancing skitter of some insect. A scorpion emerges from the gloom.

Roll group iniative

I haven't set you up yet, but state a starting position and I can reconfigure.

Group Initiative. (1d20=1) Seriously! WTF is up with IC giving me low rolls the last couple of weeks??? I've rolled I think three rolls above 10 out of the lat dozen or more and only two of those were upper teens. I was debating whether or not to even attempt Initiative since it affected everyone. Guess I was right to doubt. Sorry Guys :(

Joleesa sees the scorpion advancing towards her and curses. "Uh guys. A little help in here please!"

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

(OOC: I was trying to make it in the door, to the square 3 spaces below Joleesa; i.e. M25)

On his turn, Izkrael will advance toward the scorpion, and swing.
Attack 1d20+7=24
Damage 2d6+3=14

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

Where you have me is as good as any, I think.

San, wielding his greatsword, warily eyes the zombies as he moves forward to attack the scorpion. The distraction they pose causes him to miss wildly.

greatsword (1d20+6=10, 2d6+5=12)

Initiatives Rd 1:
Scorpion: 15 [attacking]
Joleesa: 9 [pending]
Izkrael: 5 [slice and dice -kill]
Egan: 4
Vilya: 4
Sanvoros: 3
Seven Eagle: 3
Tobias: 3
Ten: 2

The scorpion scuttles towards Jolessa and lashes out with a spiny red claw

1d20+2=6

It fails to connect, the chitinous spined claw snapping a hand's breath from Jolessa's face

Izkrael darts up and skewers the vermin with his crescent sword. It twitches and dies writhing. As it expires, the body fades away.

Actions?

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Since it attacked first, Joleesa would have taken a swing at it as an AOO and then a normal attack. She will probably miss though, so your wordsmithing about Izkrael will probably still be quite true...

Attack of Opportunity Scorpion with Masterwork Rapier. (1d20+7=11)
Damage on Scorpion. (1d6+1=6)

Attack Scorpion with Masterwork Rapier. (1d20+7=26)
Confirm Critical on Scorpion. (1d20+7=19)
Critical Damage on Scorpion. (2d6+1=7) Whoops, stuffed that on IC, so the link will look different if you click it 'cause I accidently rolled twice.

Joleesa swings at the chittering creature as it scuttles across the floor to take a swipe at her.

Bribes always welcome

Right as always, Jo...the text is hereby retconned

Jo pierces the clicking fiend, a spurt of ichor painting the moldy floor. Iz follows through with a killing blow directly after.

OK, scorp is dead ..actions?

Male Human Sorcerer 5

Tobias goes over to the door and peers into the room. "So, a scorpion? Still a bunch of zombies."

My Knowledge(Arcana) check about the Ominous Latin Chanting in my last post? Do I know anything?

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan relaxes his arrow from its nocked position near his cheek, as he sees the Scorpion fall, then remains intent on the group of undead.

Tobias:

Spoiler:
It was more of an ominous octopus murdering an iguana chant .. It sounded spellerific, but you couldn't place the tongue

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Ten lumbers into the room to try and attack the scorpion, but it is dead before he can even react, he will push forward a little more cautiously, heading in the direction of the chanting.

Knowledge religion check if at all useful. (1d20+6=22)

I think I am having all your luck Flash.

I guess now would be a good point for my 3 spells to start running out? Also Ten Foot has 60' of dark vision.

Yea it's been a while

Ten can see the milling zombies well enough, but doesn't pin down the chanting. It stopped just as the group entered the main room and hasn't resumed

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San looks around at the zombies. "What are they waiting for?"

Does he have any ideas of what's going on?

Knowledge Arcana and Knowledge Religion (1d20+9=13, 1d20+10=16)

Male Human Sorcerer 5

"Well, it sounded like they were chanting some sort of incantation before we barged in."

Knowledge Arcana and Knowledge Religion (1d20+9=13, 1d20+10=16)

San:

Spoiler:
You know that the zombies could be under the direct command of someone, or they could be commanded to stay and not attack. They could be waiting for some trigger to release them.

Ten foot retrieves a copper coin from his purse, casts light on it and throws it as far forward as he can to illuminate the far end of the room.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

"Alright, we won't get anywhere just standing here. We should move as a group to check out that dais." San begins slowly approaching the raised dais.

Is my mage armor still active? If not, I'll use another charge from my wand. Let me know

Who let the mutated crab in? LOL. Sorry for my absences, I have been swamped with Real Life issues, and it's unfortunately not slowing down. My sincere apologies

Ten's coin flips glowing into the room. It illuminates the zombies swaying at the edges of the room. Both sides of the room are covered in zombies, roughly a score of them. They seem to be restrained by either commands or some force.

Suddenly a figure appears at the top of the dias. It looks to be a Sliss'pok lizarman dressed in a intricate robe, but his face is a mass of tentacles. He hisses, his face tentacles writhing. He points to the party and shouts something in Sliss'pok

Sslis'pok:

Spoiler:
ATTACK!

The zombies start lurching forward, freed of their restraints.

Roll me up some group initiative!

No problemo. As always, RL Trumps this stuff any day of the Century!

Dungeon Monkey wrote:

Group Initiative. (1d20=19) OMFG!!! IC actually gave me agood roll that was important! I think I better lie down, I feel a bit faint...

Joleesa pulls back to the door, but allows space for the others to enter. She yells, "everybody form up on the doorway. We need to stick together and keep our exit safe and clear."
Greenspeak:

Spoiler:

She tells "Wheezy" to stay in the other room, although she is worried his hatred of Zombies will cause him to come rushing in to attack them.
Make of that what you will Pat.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

"Except that lets that thing on the dais sit there and cast spells at us. We need to take down the octo-iguana up there!"

San pulls a scroll of protection from evil out of its case and casts it. With mage armor, that bumps my AC up to 18, at least against evil creatures.

DM, any way for me to tell if the lizardman is undead or not? Makes a difference with my favored enemy bonus ...

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

(OOC: How far is Izkrael from the Wriggly's Sliss'pok flavor pack?)

Sanvoros Draben wrote:

San:

Spoiler:
San's discerning eye can see that this creature's movement lacks the jerkiness that undead creatures usually evidence. It's a good bet that it is among the living

Izkrael wrote:

Taking your last stated position at M25, you are roughly 60 feet from the tentacled lizardman

Will have updated map this afternoon folks!

Male Human Sorcerer 5

"Take out the lizard? Sure, why not?", says Tobias as two bolts of force hit the shaman.

Magic Missile, 1 1st-level spell left today: 6 damage total

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Ten foot clears the mutated crab thoughts from his head...

Chanting a spell to his god, Ten Foot summons a floating ghostly rapier to attack the tentacled horror, before moving 20 foot closer to him.

Spiritual weapon attack on the tentacle lizard spell caster thingy. (1d20+5=14, 1d8+1=3)

>>UPDATED MAP<<

Tonight I will update the action, I put everyone in the room, but if you have a coordinate shout it out before the zombie fun begins

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Izkrael will charge the tentacled lizard and swing at it, calling on the power of the Feathered Serpent as he does so. His blade suddenly shining with light as he strikes.(M35 or 36?)

Charging tentacle lizardfolk and smiting with the strike. (1d20+12=22, 2d6+5=14)

(Charging would decrease my AC by 2 for the round, and the smite would increase it by 3 vs. evil creatures for the round.)

(I counted 55' to the lizard, with 5' for the dais? If it is more than this, then I suppose I am just double moving towards the zoidberg-lizard.)

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Mommy! wow that is a lot of undead!

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

Finally seeing the extent of the undead menace (holy ... twenty six, by my count!) San only manages a muffled "Wow ..." and steels himself against the rotting onslaught. Maybe we bit off more'n we can chew, he thinks to himself.

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4
Ten Foot Twin Eater wrote:

And you without your Positives...

Joleesa sees Izkrael rush towards the mutated Sliss'pok WOW is that Half-Illithid Lizard Man??? That is some scary sh!t...
and debates whether or not to help. Finally giving up on any chance at keeping the party together by the door, she dashes off after him, Rapier leading with a loud "Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar!"

Follow Izkrael's lead and charge the funky Shaman
Charging Attack on Sliss'pok Shaman. (1d20+7+2=11) Back to form again I see *sigh*
