Tales from the City of Opal

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This is my homebrew world Arcaia. This particular setting is the free city of Opal, a lush equatorial city set on the edge of an immense jungle rife with undead , ancient civilizations, and dinosaurs.

Female Human

Vilya shrieks, angered by the lack of opportunities to sneak up on her adversaries. She jukes right, charging the mass of zombies head-on.

Male Human Bard-2/Sorcerer-1 (Abberant Blood line)

Seven looks up wishing he saw the stars, instead of this grubby tomb, he begins to recite a poem
"Star shine from the edge of the sky, what far realm do you warm with your heat. We are heros raised from faith, steel, resolve, and bravery we come to meet. Banish your filth back to your home, Gods of Opal give us your strenght on loan! inspire courage

Sanvoros: 21 [Wow]

Tobias: 21 [Magic Missile shaman]
Ten: 20 [attacking head lizzie]

Again apologies. My Photoshop has been uber wanky and my time uber short. Also, the attack went a different way than I thought.

Iz streaks up to the tentacled Sslis'pok and cleaves deeply into its shoulder with is sword. Jo and Wheezy I gotta get a token set for Wheezy! ride forward, Jo attempting to hit but just missing. Ten's cutalss draws blood as well. Tobias shoots arcane bolts into the abomination and it falls to the ground. The zombies still advance.

OK, San and Egan I don't think I have your actions yet. Is Wheezy attacking? ..kinda useless with Squidward dead, but she could leap on some zombies.

San cast protection from evil from his scroll, or was that being counted as pre-fight?

Everyone on the dias give me a Perception check

Male Human Sorcerer 5

"I agree! Let's leave!", says Tobias as he points at the nearest zombie, hitting it with a glowing beam of light.

Disrupt Undead: 19, 2 damage

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

"Wheezy" is just outside the door, Joleesa told him to stay. It's Zombies though (which he hates) so if'n we don't high tail it before they reach the door he will most definately bust a move and attack them on his own!

Perception Check. (1d20+5=16)

Staring longingly at the corpse and wanting to search it, Joleesa decides that it would be better to group back up as per her original plan and protect the door. Double Move back down towards the rest of the party to form up at the door.
"Wheezy" must have caught a whiff of the grave stench coming from the Zombies, because he caustiously pokes his head around the door and gives a startling screech at the approaching horde.

Tobias' bolt of golden energy staggers one of the corpses. The rest moan and continue their shuffle towards the group. Jo and Tobias make for the screeching Wheezy.

"Leave?! We cannot leave these monstrosities here! Even without a master, if they get out, they will be a menace to all civilized folk in the area. We can't let them get that chance!

Everyone back to the other side of the door. We can hold it there, and that way, only a couple can get to us at a time!"

My thoughts: Me, Iz, and either Joleesa or Egan in k24, l24, m24; everyone else behind us using spells and ranged weapons. Only one or two can get us at a time.

I will write up a map using these suggestions if everyone is OK with this

The group runs for the hallway as their rotting foes close in inexorably

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Ten Foot is a little miffed at not being in the front line and getting his hands dirty, but he reluctantly takes his place in the second row.

As it is only a double move back through the door for him, he does have one round of spiritual weapon left which he will send against the nearest undead before it fades away.

Spiritual weapon attack (1d20+5=12, 1d8+1=5)

As it is only a move related to redirect the axe, he will use his standard to cast Bless on the group.

Male Human Bard-2/Sorcerer-1 (Abberant Blood line)

Seven Eagle will continue to inspire courage from the rear!

I can adjust if you wish, just tell me where you want to be

The group returns to the gold statue room. The horde of zombies moan and shuffle towards the doorway. Ten's spiritual weapon hits a zombie, gashing his rotted shoulder deeply.

"Alright, let's take care of the rot bags!" San brings his greatsword down in on top of the head of the lead zombie...

greatsword (1d20+8=26) damage (2d6+7=11)

forgot to add Seven Eagle's +1 morale bonus to attack & damage, so the attack roll is 27, and damage 12 points

Retconning to make up for lost time. Sorry for the delay: RL's been busy.

Vilya turns away from the zombie horde at the death of their master, making for the doorway. *Moves to current position on map.*

Ducking around the corner, she slips into the shadows, readying her weapons. Sheathing her battered mace, Vilya draws a wickedly curved kukri knife and drops into a fighting stance. Leading with her machete, she waits for the second undead to breach the threshhold. *Readies Sneak Attack.*

As San's blade slices into the lead zombie's head, Vilya roars like a jungle cat, launching herself across the floor and into the legs of the second zombie, bringing her two blades up and across.

Machete: 12 + 3 = 14; damage: 1d6 + 3 = 5
Kukri (Sneak Attack): 17 + 3 = 20; damage: 1d4 + 1d6 + 3 = 9

San and Vilya both take down a zombie, their weapons hacking the rotten meat off their bones. The zombies mass together and crowd the doorway, attempting to get at the party

Ten Foot will ready a five foot step and a cure spell if any of the front line look badly wounded.

He will shout a prayer to Two Rabbits as the battle rages on.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan looses an arrow as one of the Zombies heads becomes momentarily visible.

Longbow includes (-4 for shooting through friendly cover), 1d8+1 damage (1d20+3,1d8+1=[18, 3], [4, 1])

Bribes always welcome

Tobias' golden beam strikes the lintel of the door, dropping amber sparks on Sanvoros' head. Egan draws, aims and shoots. His shaft flies by San's head and buries itself in the zombie attempting to enter the doorway.

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Joleesa guides "Wheezy" to the back of the party, but then sighs and confronts the fact that he's not gonna stay there, not with all these Zombies. She looks around the room and realizes that at least the size should give her somekind of an advantage. SHe swings herself up onto "Wheezy's" back and raises her Rapier high, ready to charge forward and attack.

So Pat: "Wheezy" was in the room where we fought the Stone Bone Skeletons, right near the door. Joleesa dashes back into the room and grabs his reigns, leading him to the back, but then thinking better of it and mounting up to take the battle to them next round.

The only problem is the chokepoint of the doorway. On one side you have the party clustered up, on the other 20+ zombies en masse . I don't think you really have enough room for a good charge ..

1d20+7=15, 1d20+5=25,

Iz stabs out and decapitates a moaning undead. The three nearest zombies attack:

The filth-encrusted hands of the zombies are spiked with long rusty slivers of metal. They scrape agianst the door futilely

NEW ROUND!

"Wheezy" snaps at the undead menace, taking a small bite out of it's skull.

Jo's rapier makes short work of one of the rotted zombies. It's arm falls, and in a moment, so does it. Wheezy rips off a chunk of a wounded zombie, and Egan's next shaft buries itself deep in the undead's eye socket. The stench of a score of rotting corpses roll over the sweating party as they hold the doorway. The zombies crowd closer, their mutilated limbs waving like turgid seaweed.

Ten wonders when the weight of the zombies will be enough for them to over run the group and gets ready to attack any that "overrun" the front line.

Over run with an aid other from the other zombies is a legitimate tactic here Mr DM, as is a bull rush.

Male Human Sorcerer 5

Tobias sends another beam at the undead, but he succeeds in chipping more paint off the doorframe.

Disrupt Undead: 9, 5 damage I really need to get Precise Shot one of these days.

Hurm. You live up to your name, O evil one. Thanks for the tip, I will research how these interact with the situation. I don't know the rules on them all that well, but Seeing as these zombies have no intellegence or speed, would it still apply?

Bribes always welcome

I think the overrun would be applicable, however, I am still unconvinced that a zombie would have the mental acuity to do a bull rush manuver. Thanks!

Dungeon Monkey wrote:

Overrun is probably the more intelligent of the two actions (in my humble opinion), with that you are trying to deliberately pass through the opponents square to get behind him, strickly speaking it is also the only one a zombie can not do as it requires you to use a standard action in during a move action, so unless they can complete a partial charge, which needs a 10 foot run up they can not over run.

Bull rush on the other hand is an attempt to push the opponent away from you and I have used it to simulate crowd crush in the past, especially if your willing to have some of the zombies fail and end up prone or trampled on by their comrades in un-death.
Grapple is also a very legitimate action here as well, have the moaning pressing hoard of undead drag the front line through the door into the crowd, the options are endless. Even more fun as characters weilding weapons take minuses to their roll to break the grapple for not having both hands free.

I am currently running a D20 modern zombie disaster campaign, so all these rules for mindless hoards of undead come in useful. Holding a defensive position only works if the opponents you are fighting care about personal safety or pain, if they don't then they can draw as many attacks of opportunity as the characters can dish out to achieve their goal of munching on fresh tender meat.

Female Human

Vilya's insane laughter increases tenfold as she leaps onto a zombie's back, slashing and stabbing madly.

"AHHAHAHAHAHAHA! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!"

Attack (kukri): 16 + 2 = 18; damage: 1d4 + 2 = 6
Attack (short sword): 20, confirm: 12 + 2 = 14; damage: 2d6 + 2 = 11
