Tales from the City of Opal

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This is my homebrew world Arcaia. This particular setting is the free city of Opal, a lush equatorial city set on the edge of an immense jungle rife with undead , ancient civilizations, and dinosaurs.

IZ:

Spoiler:
Izkrael catches a glimpse of movement and a swirl of water out in the deeper bog. There is something swimming out there.

OK with Egan down I'm gonna have to retrench since he was kinda your point guy. Do we want to give it a rest and wait for Egan to return or try to forge on?

I'm OK either way. San's just basically making a beeline for the mound, following Egan's point.

Female Human

Vilya grins at Ten Foot.

"Rar."

She begins moving quickly towards the mound, disregarding her footing.

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

"Mind the waters." Izkrael says, as he points his blade towards the swirl.

Male Human Bard-2/Sorcerer-1 (Abberant Blood line)

Seven Eagle ventures forth hating every second of it, he follows as close as possible to the group, he fails to hide his fears.

Bribes always welcome

The group presses onwards. Egan takes point, the adventuresome Vilya close behind. The thick reeds start to thin as they head into boggier footing. They begin to sink up to a meter in a loose muddy muck.

Will update as soon as I DMPC perceptions and a few other things to push the story along.

Perception check (I have included an aid other bonus of +2 because San has told us where to look, please remove if this is not relevant). (1d20+5=9)

Ten Foot freezes in place and asks San, "What do you see my mate?"

Despite the look he cannot see anything.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan takes a look as well.

Perception - Sight (1d20+19=32)

Then racks his brain to determine where he's seen that type of movement before.

Knowledge Nature (1d20+8=16)

Egan's keenly-trained eyesight also catches the swirl of water. He's seen that type of swirl before. Alligators are usually the cause, but in these jungle swamps aquatic dinosaurs can't be ruled out. Egan knows that both types of creature like to rush out of deep water, snag a victim and drag them back into the deeps.

Egan also notices that the boggy muck they are heading into has some disturbance patterns. He's not sure but there could be ... things hiding the muddy mire.

Female Human

"Hey, what are you all waiting for?"

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

"Let's move up to the hummock in front of us, and get a better look at our situation."

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

"Agreed San. We should probably move from hummock to hummock aswell."

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San climbs out of the bog onto the hummock, and quickly scans the area. Until we get closer to the island, he will sheathe his sword, and instead draw his bow with an arrow, covering the remainder of the party as they climb onto the drier land.

Perception (1d20+9=15)

Bribes always welcome

The party clambers onto the weedy hummock. A few leeches cling here and there, but they are quickly pulled off. To their left, deeper water. To their right a green strech of mossy bog and muck. Straight ahead, a tree-covered hillock where a few time-worn worked stones peer from the thick underbrush

Please give me a coordinate where you will be walking to

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

Looking about, San comments, "Looks like the hummock next to the deep water (h19) offers the least amount of distance in the muck, but only a bit. What do you think, Egan?"

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

"While I agree that that offers less time in the muck, being next to the deep water could create it's own issues". "Bigger threats could hide in deeper water". "I would nominate going through that one". (M-26).

Survival (1d20+12=19)

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Ten Foot still peers at the water, "What is it, I still can't see anything?"
He looks at Egan and San, trusting them to sort out a safer route.

Male Human Sorcerer 5

"Get away from the water, Ten. We don't want your head bitten off by a crocidile, after all."

Tobias points his crossbow at the water.

Vilya rolls her eyes and digs a leech out of the skin of her neck.

"Hilarious."

I've had some personal experience dealing with leeches. Two years ago, I helped guide a Scout trip through LaVerendrye Provincial Park. Lesson learned: the waters are infested with five-inch leeches from hell. The crew leader at the time (who also happens to be a whiny loser, but that's beside the point) got one stuck on his leg, and shrieked like a little girl. I decided to f&@% with him.
Me: "Looks like you've got a leech."
Al: "GET IT OFF ME!"
Me: "Well, you just pull it off, you see."
Al: "YOU DO IT!"
Me: "If you say so..." *goes to get my lighter*
For some reason, he DID NOT STOP ME as I burned the still-attached leech to a crisp using a barbecue lighter. Moron.

Yes.

The group resumes its slog through the meter-deep boggy mud. Staying clear of the deeper water they head towards their next hummock, Egan leading. As they near the next hummock, the soft mud begins to boil. Tiny moss-covered skeletons begin to emerge from the boggy area. The skeletons are less than a meter tall with narrow sloped heads and blunt-snouted toothy jaws. They begin to advance, jaws clacking

Someone give me a base initiative! Also, anyone with applicable K skills can try to ID the skellis if that interests you.

>>SKELLI BRAWL MAP<<

Male Human Sorcerer 5

Initiative: 1d20=14

Also, how long was it between the last fight and this one?

Bribes always welcome

I would say about three hours ..let's call it 4pm at the moment. You have 2 hrs before sunset.

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

All nicely with in a 30 foot burst.

"Huh."

Vilya appears more intrigued (and slightly disgusted) than startled at the skeletons' sudden intrusion.

Knowledge (arcana): 19 + 5 = 24
Initiative: 9 + 3 = 12

Male Human Sorcerer 5

Well, we're apparently using group initiative, so these are our initiatives:

Tobias: 16
Vilya: 17
Sanvaros: 16
Ten: 15
Seven: 16
Izkrael: 18
Joleesa: 22
Egan: 17

Also, I won't be able to post from Friday to possibly Sunday.

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Knowledge(religion)=25

For his action, Iz will take a 5-ft. step foward and slice at the skeli in L21.

Attack = 16
Damage = 7 (15/2)

No worries

Iz:

Spoiler:
Iz has seen creatures like this before, just not as skeletons. They are monkey kobolds, a primitive arboreal reptilian race that haunts the trees of the Mazatilian jungles. They are a nuisance, but Iz has never seen them animated as undead before

Izkrael wrote:

I believe than you only have to deal with a DR5/bashing on skellis, not 1/2 damage, so you did 10 dam actually. If the Beta changed this rule, I can't find it anywhere.

Izkrael's slender sword lops the skull off an advancing moss-covered skeleton with the ease of a child popping dandelion heads. The headless undead sinks back into the mire.

Vilya the Taker wrote:
Knowledge (arcana): 19 + 5 = 24

Vilya:

Spoiler:
Vilya guesses that these little boogers are the remains of monkey kobolds, an annoying pest of the deep jungle. They look even stupider dead.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

"Figures! Wrong weapon again!" San spends a swift action to activate his Arcane Strike feat, then lets loose with an arrow at the skeleton in L23 (to avoid firing into melee).

attack and damage (1d20+7=8, 1d8+6=14) IC really hates me lately!

After that craptastic shot, San will pull out his morningstar.

Just a reminder, I used a charge from my mage armor wand when we first spotted the mound; with a duration of 1 hour, I should still be good ...

Knowledge (Religion) (1d20+10=17) See? A natural 1 followed by a whopping 7 ... ugghhh!

San's arrow whizzes by Egan's head, ruffling his hair

Hee hee. San you can go ahead and read Iz's spoiler above

Female Human

Vilya draws her kukri and machete, and sets to work hacking apart the skeletons.

"Monkey kobolds. Little beasts are even uglier dead!"

Attack (kukri): 19; confirm: 11 + 2 = 13; damage (if applicable): 2d4 + 2 = 7
Attack (machete): 1. Not again...

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

I am so taking improved initiative when I can, the waiting is killing me.

Ten Foot stands rooted to the spot, his reactions too slow to understand what is happening just yet.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan, whom had been using his quarterstaff to probe ahead of him in the muck, takes a swing at one of the little bony midgets.

Quarterstaff (1d20+4=20)

Damage (1d6+1=2)

"Is there nothing alive in this Jungle" Egan Exclaims as his Quarterstaff glances off the shoulder of one of the darting beasts, bone shards flying from the contact.

Rd 1 Inititives:
Joleesa: 22 [pending]
Izkrael: 18 [slicy slice]
Vilya: 17 [Kukri-ookley, and whoopsie!]
Egan: 17 [whackidy whack]
Tobias: 16 [pending]
Sanvoros: 16 [Parting Egan's hair]
Seven: 16 [pending]
Ten: 15 [readying the God Bomb]
Skellis: 12 [attacking]

Vilya slashes at a mucky skeleton with her kukri. The blade carves a bit of moss off its yellowed bones. She attempts to hit it with her machete, but the weapon slips out of her hand and plunks into the mire in front of her.

If you want, you can pick it right back up Vilya, I just thought it was funny

Egan's quarterstaff knocks a few rib bones off one of the tiny terrors as it approaches

Male Human Bard-2/Sorcerer-1 (Abberant Blood line)

seven eagle stretches out an arm and points at the dead kobald, a spark of white energy arcs towards its fleshy entrails.
Disrupt undead Hit 13; dmg 4

Gonna give those that haven't posted a bit, then if no posts I'll advance the story and post a map tonight at some point

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Ten Foot calls on the power of Two Rabbits and channels energy out in a 30 foot burst.

Channel energy DC-12 (2d6=10)

Another powerful God Bomb!

Bribes always welcome

Ten closes his eyes and touches his birthmark. A flash of energy races out from him. The skeletons literally crumble into muck, their small forms dissolving in the wash of radiant energy. Everyone feels like they just downed a shot of the finest Opaline rum.

Well, so much for THAT threat! LOL

The bog returns to its quiet undisturbed normalcy, the undead vanquished

Male Human Sorcerer 5

Tobias fires a bolt at the nearest skeleton.
