Here's a summary of what people are thinking so far:
Kevin O'Rourke 440: Tactical, Operations and Engineering - a character fresh from the Academy.
Edelsmirge: Chief doctor, chief engineer, and then captain. Female Vulcan.
GM Valen: Various ideas. Will start late.
Eric Swanson: Andorian Helm/Navigator
Tarondor: Human. Captain, Engineer or Medical.

Oh I see Valen is starting late. In that case I’ll take Science officer. Character sheet coming up!

Lance Kreskin |

I’ll have to wait until I’m home to post my full write up but here’s the sheet for Commander Kreskin.

GM Valen |

Looks, like I will be playing the Chief Medical Officer, which fits well enough into the ideas I bandied about.
Here's what it looks like we have so far:
Kevin O'Rourke 440: ? - Tactical
Edelsmirge: Vulcan Chief engineer
GM Valen: ? Chief Medical
Eric Swanson: Andorian Helm/Navigator
Tarondor: Human Captain
Kreskin: Human Science Officer
Currently thinking of a human or a tellarite PC. Either way, character is likely to be highly intelligent, stubborn, and proud.

Lance Kreskin |

Commander Kreskin is built in my profile. Perhaps he can be the science officer/XO?
And we still need to build out the USS Intrepid, right? I know we settled on a Constitution-class ship, but we have other choices to make, right?

Tarondor |

I’ve finished an initial reading of the rules. I really like them, particularly the character creation rules, which combine both deterministic and intangible elements.
I’ll build out my character tonight. I’m still probably going human, but Andorian and Denebolan both also appeal. I’ll let you know.

Captain Adam Reeves |

I'm not seeing a starship talent named "Multi-Role Explorer". Am I misunderstanding you?
As to the talents I do see, I'm leaning towards "Rugged" and "Fast Targeting Systems".

Eric Swanson |

I have not picked up the Rule Book yet, though I did get the Quick Start Rules a look over. Thanks to that online character generator I am almost finished with my character, just need to work on a background for him.
I think Multi-Role Explorer is the Profile of the ship, which is fine by me. I don't know what ship Talents are available but I tend to agree with Captain Reeves choices here.

ULTIROLE EXPLORER
Some of Starfleet’s most renowned and revered vessels have been jacks-of-all-trades, rather than specialized for a single type of mission. This versatility allowed the likes of Jonathan Archer and James Kirk to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no one has gone before.
DEPARTMENTS
COMMAND 02
CONN 02
SECURITY 02
ENGINEERING 02
SCIENCE 02
MEDICINE 02
Select one of the following Talents:
Improved Hull Integrity
Improved Power Systems
Rugged Design
Redundant Systems
Secondary Reactors
The Constallation Class is scale 4, so we get 4 talents
We get Rugged Design and Modular Laboratories from the spaceframe.
We choose one of the following from the mission profile (multi-role explorer)
Improved Hull Integrity
Improved Power Systems
Redundant Systems
Secondary Reactors
Then pick one more from the full list on 255
I vote for High Resolution Sensors and Redundant Systems.

Lance Kreskin |

I guess the big question is: Why is the Valiant out in space? Are we explorers? Researchers? Warriors? Fast targeting is great if we're looking for a fight, but it's not as great for exploration.
And Rugged is built in to our space frame. We have two choices to make, not counting Rugged.
Currently we have:
Rugged Design and Modular Laboratories
We can pick one from the following list:
Improved Hull Integrity
Improved Power Systems
Redundant Systems
Secondary Reactors
and one from the main list
I'd be happy with Improved power systems and either High Resolution Sensors and Redundant Systems.

Captain Adam Reeves |

Admittedly I've never played the game before, and I agree we're explorers primarily. But the Enterprise got in plenty of fights it didn't go looking for. It had phasers and photon torpedoes for a reason.
Still, none of those are bad choices. I'm good with Improved Power Systems. I'll be happy with either Fast Targeting Systems or High Resolution Sensors. Not a huge issue.

Captain Adam Reeves |

Well, we'll need to see all the characters to be certain. My initial impression is that for XO we'd want someone on the Command track, but Spock was the Science Officer and XO, so maybe that's not so important. Maybe Kreskin for XO, then?
T'Karra's our engineer. Is she even -on- the bridge?
We'll have to wait on the other roles until the rest of the players make their characters.

GM SuperTumbler |

The engineer can be on the bridge at the engineering station, which allows them to use the internal systems actions. They can also take those actions from Main Engineering and reduce the difficulty by 1. So you can have the engineer on the bridge running two systems, or in engineering running one system better.
All of those stations on the bridge are configurable and can be set up as you want them. This is to reflect the different assignments on different series.

Lance Kreskin |

The values look good to me (but I’m pretty new). Just make sure they’re testable and that you’ll have opportunity to call on them to spend determination.

GM SuperTumbler |

I've created a sheet for the ship here and I'll link it in the short campaign description.
Characters look good so far. After the first adventure I'll give everyone an opportunity to revise their characters if they want. I find that makes things less stressful when learning a new system.
Looks like we are pretty close to being ready to get started. I'll aim for a Gameplay post late Sunday or early Monday.

Since I'm up and bored, some notes:
On Canon: We will treat Memory Alpha as canon, and try to stay away from anything that would truly mess with canon. It's a big galaxy, and there isn't that much Alpha material from this era, so we should have plenty of room to maneuver.
Memory Beta is filler and inspiration. So if something is nicely explained on Beta then we can go there. I may draw inspiration from there as it relates to expanded stories from TOS, but I'm not married to it.
Treknobabble: Please inject tech babble into your posts. You can explain your actions without specific details for me in many cases. For example, in the current case, you can explain what you are doing the the helm or the engines in your own terms.
