@mdt: I lost my first draft, and must have missed it on the second. Like you had said, on the extraction, he mistakenly killed a mother and her young child.
If you think it is too ambitious, then we can scrap it...was just trying to get us over this connections hump...:-)

I'm a Roup-native, so I've either come home to look for more work, or heading home with my new compatriots.

No, that's fine. I just didn't see it fitting in with mine as written, if you have it modified as per above, I think it's fine. I'd rather them not know each other were Psionic though.

Given the state of how people respond to Psionics, it's dangerous to let it be known. Lodic only ever used it defensively (thus only the 0 Telepathy to guard his mind from other telepaths).

As to why he's on Roup, leaving Special Arm left a bad taste in his mouth (mostly the part about why he left). He'd have reached out to those who knew outside Darrien space (everyone in Darrien space assumes you're still with Special Arm and just on an undercover assignment) to get away from the reminder of it.

We can alter the background to remove all mention of psionics..and just make it some sort of medical experiment....that should keep the basics of the story intact.

How about an artefact? Lodic's previous event was to steal an artefact. Maybe Kenneth was also supposed to be stealing one as well this time, and Lodic was on the same mission? Twigged to his boss, and let Kenneth take it. Kenneth succeeded at his mission, but wasn't happy about what he had to do to do it (the killing thing).

Liberty's Edge

Sounds great...and will let me pick up some more spy-skills!!

Ship Shares

"Varkha Gzegdoug" - 4 shares
"Allrianne" - 3 shares
"Maximilian" - 2 shares
"Doctor" - 10 shares
"Myro Palk" - 1 share
"Lynsander" - 6 shares (if we could the ship as a free trader, then its 9 shares)
"Kenneth" - 5 shares

So either 31 or 34 shares.

Personally I'm partial to The Erstwhile Fortune. Seems appropriate for this lot.

Good name Lodic, it has my vote as well, The Erstwhile Fortune!

I think I will be switching my "Secret" benefit roll for some more cash...there are a number of things I would like to get, but do not have the money to buy them...unless I can cash in one ships share!!!???

Once that is done, and I select my connection skills, I should be done...I hope

GM Darkblade wrote:

Actually Myro Palk was drbuzzard's character and he bowed out. So this should be:

Ship Shares
"Varkha Gzegdoug" - 4 shares
"Allrianne" - 3 shares
"Maximilian" - 2 shares
"Doctor" - 10 shares
"Myro Palk" - 1 share
"Lysander" - 6 shares (if we could the ship as a free trader, then its 9 shares)
"Kenneth" - 5 shares
"Lodic" - no shares

So either 30 or 33 shares.

Personally I think that the ship ought to count as a type of free trader for Lysander's benefit rolls.

The other question is, do we want to buy an older ship to get a discount on payments? Or should we get a brand-new one?

GM Darkblade wrote:

Unless I missed it I do not see a consensus on naming the ship. I believe Kelser and Varkha posted the following selections:

Albatross
Black Pig
Borealis
Crescent Star
Deneb Rising
Erstwhile Fortune
Hesperus
Roupian Belle
Sasquatch
Star Tiger
Star Witch
Stumbling Dutchman
Vulkan
or leave it as the Navarro

Being a bit superstitious about ship names, I would prefer a more optimistic name than Erstwhile Fortune. So I will stick with my suggestion, Deneb Rising.

Varkha Gzegdoug wrote:

Okay, I'm not totally sure how that works but let's crunch some numbers. If I'm doing this wrong let me know.

The base cost of the ship normally is 216.419 MCr. For a ship with financing this increases by 20% I think, so this becomes 259.7028.

Payments for this amount to 1/480th of this amount per month for 40 years, so 541,047.5 Cr per month.

So with 33 ship shares that's only 67% of the total so this should be 362,501.8 Cr per month.
If we get an older ship for another 10% off so this should be 308,397 Cr per month.

What do you guys think?

@ GM Darkblade: Would it be possible to get the 4th hardpoint fitted out with a triple sandcaster turret before launch, and have this cost included in the mortgage?

Ok, questions to answer:

1) Nope, can't trade in a ship's share for cash.

2) Yes if you wish you can be buy a new ship fresh off the line. Buying an older ship increases the ships shares by 10%, reflecting the usage and repossession of a previous owner, eccentricities and all.

3) If it is the party wish to kit out the 4th hardpoint then yes you can do so, increasing the costs accordingly. Group will need to decide this and optional crew size will increase by one.

4) Ship shares can be used one of two ways:
A: They will pay off the initial cost, the mortgage will be based off the final amount, 480 payments to go.
B: They will pay off the mortgage price, a percentage of the payments made.

5) Yes, the Navarro class can be considered a free trader for ship shares, if used in trade and commerce.

So far the name votes are:
Navarro 1
Erstwhile Fortune 2
Deneb Rising 1

I vote for new, the savings isn't that much, and it's less likely to have fatal bugs or a history with someone else who thinks we're the previous owners.

Lodic has no ship shares (didn't get any on muster out), but he could contribute toward the weapon mount or a payment.

I'll change my vote to Deneb Rising.

Don't mind either way, new or used.

getting more cash now won't help all that much, no matter your cash rolls, you can only start your life of adventuring with 2000 in equipment.

So unless the GM is going to house rule that particular ridiculous rule...

I'm ambivalent about a ship name.

A ship share is something like 400k for this ship...

Well I want to spend on some items before the start of game...perhaps that I have had for awhile...top of the list is a wafer jack and some expert programs. In my line of work, one would be almost indispensable. Also a decent, small computer for clandestine work, and a neural comm would be nice, along with a weapon, armor and some other random equipment.
So, instead of taking "secret". I can get 30,000cr more to equip my character...

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

McBride,
The 2000 is an upper limit on the cost of items, not how much you can spend total.

If you buy 100 $1,000 items, you can spend $100,000 dollars before game start. But you can't buy a $5,000 item before game starts.

I do think it's a somewhat stupid limitation honestly, as it takes most weapons and armor out of the purchase list.

Then again, Traveller has never been known for it's sensible limitations. :)

Traitor! This will be remembered.

Can we get a ruling on this GM? Are we able to purchase an item (or items) over 5,000cr? If not, then most of what I was is going to be beyond my price range unfortunately. (My main purchase would be a TL-13 wafer jack. This way I will always have a computer/4 concealed on my person. It seems to fit his character, with his very high computer skill and covert background - fingers crossed)

There are some nifty gadgets in the Agent source book that are under 2,000. If you want some suggestions, you can see some in my profile.

While we are talking about buying stuff, I wonder if you guys can help. The SRD doesn't have prices for most things and I gather a lot of stuff is listed in other sourcebooks.

I assume I can't afford a grav bike... looks like they are super expensive. But if a ground car is 6,000 Cr then maybe something like a dirt bike would be 1,000-2,000 Cr... and thus be purchasable? I am thinking of something like a motorcross bike that would be good off-road.

The ruling is fairly simple, but I can verify it if desired. You may purchase any equipment freely up to a cost of 2000 credits per item prior to the start of the game. Over that you will need to locate and purchase the item in game. And no, you cannot buy the "parts" to an item and then assemble the whole later to circumvent the cost limitation.

This was intended to reflect the differences in TL and markets for a game built upon travelling system to system. Being in a TL 7 world took most higher tech items off the board, unless you located a smuggler or collector and prices changed accordingly.

Boughene and Ariel were two very different worlds in the 'Verse. You'd never find the "junk" on Boughene that Kaylee and Wash gathered on Ariel. Credits, TL, and markets working together to shape the story.

Grav Floater: A grav floater is a forerunner of the grav belt, a platform upon which a single person can stand and be carried along. It cannot achieve any great speed but can, like an air/raft, achieve any altitude up to orbit. 500cr (You can make it enclosed floater for 50cr more).

Gravitic Racer : Vargr might not share the same taste in design as humans but both races do share a love of speed and grav racing. Unlike human grav racers Vargr designs incorporate a passenger or co-pilot seat; such is their need for companionship they like to share the racing experience with their brethren. The racer can be driven alone but the co-pilot usually serves as the navigator so they have more participation in the race. 2000cr

Gravitic Speeder : These open-topped vehicles are the Vargr equivalent of the Air/Raft commonly found in Imperial space. However, the Vargr speeder is much smaller with space for one passenger but what it lacks in size it makes up for in speed. 2000cr

Thank you for clarifying that for me GM...I will ensure all my purchases are below the 2000cr cap. I really liked your example as well...brought home the reason behind the cap most effectively.

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

GM Question. Not that it affects Lodic, since he got one as a muster out, but for the gravitic vehicles above, the Vargr ones. Any reason why a non-Vargr couldn't buy one as well? There are a dearth of affordable vehicles for PCs at game start.

Also remember guys, all the gear you buy has to be stored somewhere, so individual personal vehicles means an accompanying loss of cargo space and the equivalent drop in revenues.

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

Can vehicles be stored attached to the outside of the ship if they are space worthy? Wouldn't affect weight, but would affect volume.

Also, just a note, the Vargr Speedsters are about 750lbs, or about a 1/3rd of a ton. So not a lot of loss either way. They're basically speeder bikes from Star Wars.

Lodic's Grav Bike can carry a ton of cargo, so I'm assuming it weighs about a ton as well. But it can handle one driver and one passenger, and can work as a shuttle to haul people and small cargo up and down without landing the ship. Good for dropping off passengers and luggage without landing, or dropping off highly sensitive small cargo.

These extra curricular vehicles cannot be attached to the outside of the ship without a docking collar or attachment points, and of course an airlock to reach them, which would likewise affect ship tonnage.

The limitations were put in place to prevent abuses of the system. Otherwise entrepreneurs could simply attach twenty or so vehicles to the outer hull, jump to the next system and then off load for sale without any cargo penalties. Weight alone is not the only factor in determining d tons, so noted but not withstanding, accordingly so for space limitations.

How many jet skis can you attach to the outside of a fishing trawler, sides, top, and bottom, before it sinks or weighs too much for the engines to move it through calm waters?

But to answer your question, yes anyone can purchase them, even non-Vargr. But consider that you will be tooling around in the equivalent to a VW Bug in the days after WWII. The Zhodani and Vargr were at war with the Spinward Marches only a few scant years previous, with Vargr raiders still hitting systems to this day. The Zhodani have yet to admit to the atrocities they committed upon many Imperial worlds, they and their Vargr "attack dogs," if you pardon the pun.

The ship already has a Small Gig, an ATV and an Air/Raft, plus Lodic has added his grav vehicle for 4 tons of space yet to be removed from the cargo bay. You have a decent amount of travel potential at your disposal.

If personal ownership vs. sharing is going to be a problem, please let me know now.

I have no drive skill, so it's 'shanks mare' for me...lol

My equipment selection is going to look a lot like yours mdt. Lots of fun spy-gear to play with...will miss the wafer jack, but will get a hand-held computer to compensate..and save up for one in the future!!

on another note, I received a "secret" as a benefit when mustering...will I get to know what that is, or does it come into play later during the game??

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

My question was intended to ask if the ship had a docking collar on the existing airlock, sorry for the lack of clarity.

I was unaware the ship already had a small gig, atv, and air/raft. I'm fairly certain that it was not common knowledge either. Perhaps that could be added to the campaign tab for future reference?

To get one thing out of the way, I'll vote for Deneb Rising.

Also, regarding equipment, do we need to buy vacc suits or are they already in ship's locker?

Since recruitment is closed, should we move this to the discussion tab so that the recruitment forum doesn't keep getting updates?

I'm good with Deneb Rising as well.

We can also make it a priority to get to a high tech world to do some shopping as soon as possible.

Sold! I would take the Racer unless the Speeder is faster. Hard to tell from the names.

Don't forget that ship cargo tonnage is not mass, but volume. 1 dton is about 13.5 cubic meters, the volume of 1 ton of mass of hydrogen (I think this is in liquid state).

A typical earth motorbike probably takes up 3-4 cubic meters, depending on size and configuration. So if a gravitic racer is similar it will be well below 1 cargo ton.

mdt wrote:

Even if it was allowed, as you said it would affect volume, and the performance of the ship's drives are based on the volume of the ship, not its mass.

See the stuff on the campaign page.

PM me and let me know if your secret is related to technology, politics, military matters, or the ancients and I will reply with the secret.

I believe the vehicles, storage arrangements, docking clamp and airlock info was on the ship list from the start. See Here

Campaign Info Tab has been up for a bit now, sorry I forgot to post a note to give it a review.

Woot! Yeah, I have Drive 0! What could possibly go wrong? :)

mdt wrote:

If it can carry 1 ton of cargo, does the cargo go on the outside? Or is the cargo rating for the grav bike in mass instead of volume?

Per the Core Rules for Starship Design, an Air/raft or similar vehicle takes up 4 d tons of space including the storage rack/hanger, whether inside the ship or on the hull.

Cargo on such a vehicle is on the outside of the vehicle if open air, covered if the vehicle is enclosed.

Pathfinder Rulebook Subscriber

Yes, but the grav bike is specifically enclosed, but also specifically takes up an area of 6 cubic meters. The only way both those can be the case is if the passenger compartment is enclosed, but the cargo space isn't (kind of like a pickup truck).

The grav bike takes up 4 tons of cargo space on the starship regardless of the 6 cubic meters. You can decide for yourself if it is a pickup truck with a camper or open bed, that makes no real difference in the larger scheme of the campaign. Make the decision and that will be that for your particular vehicle.

What about the Grav Racer?

I recall the deck plans designs for the Type-S from the original game, which allocated 4 tons to an air/raft, but had a kind of "garage" that it parked in (which obviously had to be notably larger than the air/raft - the air/raft took up maybe half the space).

Would there be any volume savings for putting the vehicle in storage in the cargo hold, where some work had to be done to get it out again (compared to the relative ease of the "garage")?

The space beyond the vehicle size is to allow for boarding, charging, loading/unloading of cargo, maintenance, etc.

I came across a wonderful character generator for Traveler called TCG by a company called RPGsuite I bought it and have been having a blast playing around with it. The basic system is free, but it only supports drifters, but you can get the character package for the rest. Have asked about expanding to black book information, but no reply yet. Check it out!

Credits.

10kCr - me
15kCr - Varka

So 25kCr it sounds like towards spec. cargo.

You should move this to the discussion thread, not the recruitment thread, since we've started.

Please either use the SRD, or get a copy of the actual book... the playtest isn't right. :|

I added a ship tab that calculated some of the stuff regarding the ship.

Monthly cost: $44,791.86 incl. maintenance, fuel, staterooms, etc.

If I did all the math right..

Looks like our best bet is Feri. 60k profit on 69 tons (cargo plus mail), plus up to 21 tons of spec. cargo. That includes 1 high passage, 1 medium, and 4 (3 at a minor loss) low passage.

We'd need to hire a steward though, unless someone has the skill?
