Robert, I know we are not up to this yet, but is there anyway I could meld my profession chef into lowering unrest/increasing morale? Handing out food that taste's better than just soggy dried rations likely could go a long way to a positive outlook.
Everybody tends to be nicer after they have had a good meal. :)

And... I have no idea where that came from. I just started writing, and it turned into a full-on speech. I can even see him orating in my head. Apparently, Rogath is living up to the C in his alignment.
As for actual actions, I'd go with Dakún's list, except that I'd replace the second Salvage with a Morale Boost (Prayer services).

Lucent, I appercieate your pacience. I just wanted you to know that my time is opening up again (as I know you have seen from my other campaigns with you) and I'll be getting back into the swing of things with this group as well. To everyone else, I am sorry that I have not been able to write. This have been very busy for me as of late. But that has passed now.

I'll say it again: PBP's greatest strength is that it's not a rush job. I don't join any PBP with the expectation of seeing 10 posts daily. The "quality over quantity" rule is usually in effect for affairs such as this.
I've certainly seen PBPs which ask for an absurd number of posts per day (I think I've seen as high as 4), but in general, they are pretty relaxed. The other nice thing is that no matter how long it is between posts, you can just scroll back and pick up right where you left off.
Celeador |
@Lucent: Boss, quick question for you. I took the Dynasty Founder (story) feat. For me to complete it, it states I must:
"Thwart all rivals to rulership over the chosen region, including at least one challenging foe."
So would I need to be the leader of this band of dwarves to finish off the feat and gain the Completion Benefit?

Dr. Logem, Ph.Dwarf |
Ok Rob, so to make sure I understand Downtime rules correctly and we're all on the same page, I'm going to list out each of the phases and what I'm doing for each one, even if they don't apply to me right now, k?
Upkeep Phase
Step 1 (Add up Costs): N/A
Step 2 (Pay Costs): N/A
Step 3 (Determine Capital Attrition): N/A
Step 4 (Determine Business Attrition): N/A
Activity Phase
Step 1 (Perform Free Activities): Intimidate the Settlers into performing additional tasks; Taking 10 on 4 Intimidate checks (10 + 10[Skill] = 20 on the Check)
Step 2 (Continuing Ongoing Downtime Activity): N/A
Step 3 (Begin New Downtime Activity): Earn Capital (Goods)
Income Phase
Step 1 (Determine Building Income): N/A
Step 2 (Determine Organization Income): ??
Step 3 (Determine Other Income): Earn Capital, Take 10 Craft (Alchemy) (10+16[Skill] = 26; 1 Goods Used, 2 Produced
Step 4 (Abandon Assets): N/A
Step 5 (Sell Assets): N/A
Event Phase
???
Question on the Organization Income - do my two teams count as an Organization, or do I need more teams for them to actually count as one for purposes of income? I'm not 100% Clear on this.
Also, I'm going to take one unit of Goods from the Group and create 2 using my downtime activity - I'm going to refund the group their unit of Goods I used, and keep the extra for myself. 'Zat alright?
Robert Brookes RPG Superstar 2014 Top 4 |
That all looks good, Logem, though I realize that I obfuscated a portion of the rules when I was outlining them.
On any day when the settlers aren't taking any activities they don't consume any goods. But for every supplemental task they perform, the settlers consume 1 Unit of Goods for every task beyond the first. So, if you perform 5 supplemental tasks per day they consume 4 units of Goods. I realized that wasn't clearly explained anywhere.
So, during the upkeep phase, the settlers would cost 4 Unit of Goods to maintain (representing food, water, resources they use for their day-to-day tasks, etc) if you go for a full five supplemental actions.
As for the organizations, I think you need to match the amount of teams and pay the creation cost? I didn't notice how confusingly laid out the organizations part is.
Angrin Thronebearer |
Can I use my Craft (Brewer) to improve morale, as well? I would presume as much but I'm not sure.
Also, still wrapping my head around the rules - should have studied harder.
Dr. Logem, Ph.Dwarf |
Hmm would've nice to know the goods part at first. :P
So guys, do we want to do 5 full actions today or not?
Hm.. so Living off the Land isn't useful except if we have a Resource on the hex - otherwise, its just a waste of an action that doesn't also hurt us any.
I still say we perform 5 full actions today, but will change my recommendations to the following:
1. Salvage
2. Defend
3. Scout
4. Salvage
5. Salvage
We want to get moving sooner rather than later, but we need to salvage what we can for now - we don't know if the salvage will survive more than a few days.
Whatcha think?
Angrin Thronebearer |
I think that seems a fair choice. Though I don't know if we want to push our dwarves that hard right away. Three actions seems sufficient to me.
Rogath Silvertarn |
Ah! That's what the drawback to using all possible actions is. When you said the DC stayed flat and the same person could make all the checks, I was rather puzzled.
Do we want one Salvage to be a Craft so we can transport the Goods? Are there any rules on how hard it is to move the Goods around? We don't want to find a huge amount then abandon them.
If not, 3/1/1 works for me.
Dr. Logem, Ph.Dwarf |
I think that seems a fair choice. Though I don't know if we want to push our dwarves that hard right away. Three actions seems sufficient to me.
I disagree - now is the time to push them the hardest. They can rest later.
As for making say, a heavy wagon..
Each unit of Goods is worth 20 gp - we have 45 units, or 900 gp for crafting purposes. A single heavy Wagon would run us 1/3rd of 100 gp - or 33.34 gp. I'm going to assume thats rounded up to 2 units of goods if we make a single wagon.
Now, with a +50 check to craft the wagon, taking a 10, the Dwarves could easily get it built extremely quickly. I don't know the DC of making a wagon, but considering you can up the DC to make it faster, lets say we up the DC to 60, which equals our total for our craft skill.
Now, In order to make the Wagon thats 1000 sp we have to build - 60 x 60 = 3600 sp - or, we could make three heavy wagons in a single day.* That would cost us 5 units of goods - Making all 3 would ensure we do not waste a single portion of any of the Goods. (1/3rd of 100 x 3 = 100)
Depending on how much we can carry with 3 heavy wagons, I'm all for this. 5 units of goods for 3 heavy wagons is a good deal, as long as we have the animals to pull them.
Rob, do we have the animals to pull that, and how many goods can 3 Heavy Wagons carry?
*Edit* I realized that would be a weeks worth of crafting, not a days worth. So divide that by 5 (A typical work week), we'd instead be able to make 720sp worth a day - It would take five days to make three wagons, not one day, ensuring we waste as little time/money as we possibly can.
Maven Brewbane |
Hoo boy...and the mathcrafting begins...
I might add that it would be a good idea, if we have the resources, to make sure people have carrying equipment as well, i.e. backpacks, pouches, etc. Any sail scraps could be sewn into useful items, at least to a point, and may supplement our wagon project.
As for how hard we push everyone? I find that in RP, it's a mistake to let the math handle everything. DM's are full of surprises, and this one has already thrown some pretty massive curve balls so far. I think if we spare one action each day, instead of pushing to the absolute limit, we'll stay productive without pressing our NPC's to the breaking point, and reduce the likelihood of any of Rob's "secret GM rolls" totally derailing us.
What. You know he's doing it. they all are.

I gotta tell you guys. I am haveing a hard time writing Mineko. I wrote a whole peice and then scrapped it. She is just annoying (and thats comming from the guy that made her!) She reminds me of that princess that starts to show up around the 200th epidsode of Bleach. I just want to kick her in the face some times.

I'm familiar with that feeling. Not particularly wanting to write a character. The advice I was given was to "change them" but... It didn't help me much. So, you know, take it for what it's worth, eh?
EDIT: Also. Urg, math. Please, someone be our calculator.
I'm just here for the stories, man, I don't know nuthin' 'bout no maths.
Mineko Yamauchi |
Evening guys,
I decided to take the chance to play a different side of Mineko. I'm not sure if your onboard with it, but I did design her to be a "leader" type role. I think now that she is dropping the pretenses she would be pretty good for the group. Also, it makes writing her *much* easier.
Rogath Silvertarn |
I'm fine with being the math-guy for the group.
I'll do the math then present you guys the option for a 'yay' or 'nay'.
I'll double-check it and sometimes offer alternatives. I like crunching the numbers, but I won't always have time for it. Most groups I've been in work this way - one "math-guy" who translates the others' goals into numbers and the numbers into options.
I do think we should push the dwarves hard today, but also do things to raise morale. But I also think Maven's right in general - knowing the numbers is good, and making efficient decisions is good, but doing this by the numbers alone is going to come back to bite us in the end.

Oooooooh, Character Development. Fancy!
(Said teasingly, if it's not clear in text)
Actually, I expected that to be your eventual intent from the beginning, so it wasn't until I came over here after reading it that I realized it was a change for you.
Quint Bonechisel |
I like playing with the nuts and bolts too, but like Rogath don't get quite as into it as some. In this case I think Maven's right, we need to look at it from a roleplaying standpoint as well. I'd suggest today we do Salvage, Scout, Defend, Salvage, and then tomorrow we can shift the Scout to start crafting wagons. I think spending a week on the shore isn't unreasonable with what we know at the moment (which is nothing). If scouting shows that to be infeasible then we can reconsider tomorrow.
We might want to look at alternatives to heavy wagons too; depending on what the terrain is like we could spend a whole bunch of goods on some wagons and then find we're surrounded by swamps. Another good reason to delay crafting (and any other major decisions frankly) until tomorrow when we have some more information.
@Rob: Would spending the day planning and organizing things (morale boosting) be my only action, or could I raise some influence as part of that organizational effort as well? (making promises to divvy resources to deal with special cases, earning goodwill reuniting separated loved ones, taking stock of what sort of supplies people lost on the ship and will need replacing for them to fulfill their duties, etc.)
Dr. Logem, Ph.Dwarf |
You know, I *am* actually looking at it in a roleplaying standpoint as well - Dr. Logem is here to survive - to conquer - and to learn. He did not lose anyone special to him today, and despite the rampant death, is upbeat and looking at the future, not the current. He's already had his share of hardships in life - he's not one to weep or groan.
In essense, he's cold and calculating.
And I agree - we should probably wait on crafting, then. VERY good point with the swamp thing. Thats why I'd rather see us salvage x3, scout, and defend.
Dr. Logem will make more goods in the meantime, representing that he is making preservatives/preserving food, making alcohol (Which can be used in medicine), or just making chemicals using what we have.
Though he'll be keeping his own personal supply of stuff, he'll also contribute to the group.
Also, as for the 'council of eight', I agree with this far more than the single leader thing.
Quint Bonechisel |
I believe Cel had said that he intended her to break down her walls but I don't think he intended it to be quite so sudde, though Quint's glad she has. She may need to correct some of his opinions and assumptions however :p
Mmm, fair enough. I certainly can't complain as Quint's fairly selfish at the moment as well. I think he would counsel against whipping everyone into the ground though. We need to get things moving and can't slack off, but we will need to set aside some time to rest and recover from the ordeal once we find a suitable location to make at least some temporary shelters.
Oh, duh. Our first craft project should probably be tents and blankets if anything :p
Angrin Thronebearer |
I'm fine with a council of eight. Angrin's not very good with his words, it seems. :P
But yeah, he'll be convinced.
EDIT: It's not really a democracy, Quint. It's an oligarchy. :D

Wow twenty posts here in just a few hours, on a Friday no less!
Looks like you guys are coming up with a good plan. I figured as time went on some people would gravitate towards doing the hard math for the party, and Logem's player is a good choice for that.
I'm working this weekend (and right now in fact) on getting a lovely wiki together for this all, so there should be a nice reference place for things to go soon :>

Rogath Silvertarn |
Hey guys, a friend showed this to me, and I thought its hilariousness should be shared with the rest of you, considering this is a Dwarf Fortress campaign:
Nice. I should take up DF again. I never get weird things happening in my forts...
Dr. Logem, Ph.Dwarf |
I uh.. based an entire fortress around Dr. Logem, once. The URL is in my profile.. was an interesting fortress.
Other than that, I once had a Militia Commander - a female dwarf who dual wielded silver warhammers - fight a giant tiger, get one of her arms ripped off, then proceed to smash the tiger's skull in with her other hammer. Afterwards, she returned to the fortress and acted as if nothing ever happened - no visiting the hospital.
Good times.. I too need to go back to playing that.
Angrin Thronebearer |
Has everyone put something in the IC response to the gathering? Just out of curiosity.
EDIT: I'd prefer not to cut anyone off if I post again, to clarify.

I'm watching you all right now, I don't have a lot to add while you roleplay amongst yourselves during this initial landing. Once you're all set and done with the beach, let me know what your plan is for the next 24 hours and I will move things foreward. There is no rush at all on this, I'm enjoying seeing you all RPing :)
Also, work on the wiki continues. Layout and templates are done, adding content through the day today: Ruins of Pathfinder Wiki
Angrin Thronebearer |
Alright, my current list of actions is this - from a roleplay standpoint as if there's any other sort.
- Defend
- Scout
- Salvage
- Salvage
Although, it's possible we should drop the second salvage. We shouldn't ride our dwarves too hard - at least not constantly. If we want to do so for the first day, that's fine, but in the future, they'll get mighty pissed off if we don't let them rest, I think. Imagine the tantrum spirals, yes?
Anyways, I'm also thinking of trying - with Rob's permission, of course - to brew up some liquor for a toast to the fallen by the living. Seems like a morale-booster, if nothing else. Plus, it's booze for Torag's sake!
Finally, Rob, do you mind if I change my Craft (Brewer) to Craft (Alchemy)? Since the latter seems to entirely envelop the former, I mean. If you don't, I don't mind, but, well, it seems like the logical thing. Sorry about how late this is into the game, but I've been thinking of this off and on for a week or so now. x_x
