And apologies. No map. I have an hour this afternoon (I hope) and will get it up then.

No problem, you've got a crazy week! Just don't let Oliver pick your pocket!

Back and almost functional.

Baldrech leads the way into the forest, pausing now and then to set traps along the path.

"I'll watch your backs, and I'll keep patrols away from you," he says before slipping into the trees again.

My understanding is that Kia and Arianwyn are masquerading as prisoners with Chary, Whiteclaw and Tutavak looking menacing. If that's the case, what are the "prisoners" doing with their kit?

MAP

?

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

Absolutely. Keeping my armour, gloves, belt, ring and amulet on, but Whiteclaw can hold onto my crown, rod and sword.

Female Drow Ardent 13

Chary offers to hold Kia's kit.

Female Eladrin Warlord/10

Kia gives Chary her kit with a request that she stays near so that she can get it back easily. She doesn't look happy.

Kia keeps her armour and other things that she normally wears. Just her weapons and pack are given to Chary.

Preparations made, the companions advance, Whiteclaw snarling under her breath as she shoves Kia and Arianwyn along the dirt track. Like Chary, she seems to be adopting a method approach to this subterfuge.

You are approaching from the top. Perception checks please and if Arianwyn wants to chat to the wildlife, there is some available here.

Female Drow Ardent 13

Perception: (8)+ 9 = 17

Tutavak raises a warning hand as ahead, a troop of fomorians rove into view. Their flail wielding leader turns to the approaching group and snarls at his guards to stop.

"Eladrin!" it whispers, mad-eye glowing in exaltation.

MAP

The guards shift their grip on their halberds and prepare to charge.

Whiteclaw raises her flail in an attempt to stop the advance.

"Prisoners!" she bellows. "With information."

"Is that good enough for you?" she mutters to Arianwyn and Kia.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

"Yes, excellent. Now shut up." he mutters back.

At this point, it's really down to Tutavak or Chary to maintain the deception.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

Arianwyn pants in best pretentious noble voice (although that isn't much different to how he usually sounds, "Ye gods, please, we have information! Just let us go!"

Whiteclaw snarls as she clouts the warlock around the ear with her fist.

"When we want you to talk, we'll tell you."

Bluff checks please from everyone.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

Bluff:
1d20 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22
Dark One's Own Luck reroll and use the higher of the two:
1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19

Female Eladrin Warlord/10

Kia does her best to look defeated and desperate.

Bluff check 1d20+11=(17)+11=28

She tries to serruptitiously check that Chary is nearby with her gear in case things turn nasty.

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

Speak with Spirits for advice, enhances check. Bluff:
1d20 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 6 + 3 = 28

Female Drow Ardent 13

Chary is wishing she had prepared for bluffing instead of stealth, but does her best to sell the story. She walks over to Kia and backhands her across the face, with enough just umph to be convincing. "Be quiet, Wench". While staying within her reach, Chary gives Arianwyn a sharp glance. She then barks out "Hush, you prat! We don't want the information." And with a wicked grin, "They do!"

bluff: (11)+ 11 = 22]
and to help sell it, here is an intimidation check: (8)+18=26

Whiteclaw's Bluff: 1d20+5=21
Roll average - 24. Beats the Painbringer's pathetic Insight roll of 18 easily.

"Talk. Then we rend you apart."

The Painbringer approaches Kia and Arianwyn.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

"My family are powerful magicians. There would be a substantial ransom for me - all the residuum you could want!" Arianwyn continues, "Please spare us!"

"Eladrin coward. Such a puny little creature away from your home," gloats the Painbringer, slapping Arianwyn hard across the face.

1d20+20=28. Hits. 1d10=4 damage.

"What information?"

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

Ow!

Arianwyn holds back the desire to blast the giant into oblivion.

"The... Hill Clan..." he gasps out.

"What of them? Treacherous fey, what about the Hill Clan? Are they moving?"

The Painbringer brings his face close to Arianwyn and glares at him, hands reaching for the warlock's throat.

Rev is at Games Expo, so there will be a brief hiatus.

And I'm back, so please go ahead and tell me what you're going to do to convince these fomorians that you have good information for them.

Female Eladrin Warlord/10

Kia looks at Chary as if for permission to speak.

"They are planning to steal something of value to you..." She bows her head. "I heard just before we escaped, and we ran into these!" She looks as if she is about to spit but then restrains herself and lowers her gaze again.

"The stone?"

The Painbringer turns his attention to Kia, mad-eye blazing. He gestures to the waiting guards. "Three of you - back to the camp and warn the Portal Lord. The rest, up the hill and watch."

This wasn't entirely clear, so I now clarify :)

At the Painbringer's bidding, the three visible guards lope back down the path, moving with surprising grace for creatures of their size. From the undergrowth, four more giants emerge and depart behind the companions, heading north and away towards the centre of the island. The Painbringer gestures.

"Follow me, the Portal Lord will wish to know more."

MAP

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

Tutavak, with the rashness characteristic of his people, takes the opportunity.

I know you don't usually do surprise rounds, but Tutavak wants to start the fight as soon as the other fomorians are out of view. Single action or full round?

Single action and you all get one. Init list follows below.

MAP

Tutavak (as luck would have it)
Painbringer - no action this turn
Arianwyn
Chary
Whiteclaw
Kia

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

I didn't specify a weapon out, but spear seems more likely for the charade. I'll work from that. Soul Flare vs Ref, fire damage.
1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 282d10 + 6 ⇒ (9, 7) + 6 = 22
Hoping that hits!

Tutavak, a deadly gleam in his eyes, lowers his lance at the fomorian facing away. Spirits swirl around the weapon, then spear the fey even as they embrace Chary.

Soulfire on Chary. +2 speed, +2 Ref, +3 fire damage on hit with attack, TEOChNT

Whiteclaw howls her approval as Tutavak leaps into action, his spear driving deep into the Painbringer's back. The fomorian himself grips his flail and prepares to flatten his deceivers.

MAP

Arianwyn
Chary - +2 speed/ref and +3 fire damage on hit to end her next turn
Whiteclaw
Kia
Tutavak
Painbringer - no action this turn

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

Arianwyn sighs.

We better keep this one for questioning.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

The eladrin rubs his wrist of the slip-knot that bound them. With a casual wave he bestows a woeful curse on the fomorian.

Hexblast (vs Will) - effect - Painbringer is cursed.
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 291d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 52d6 ⇒ (2, 5) = 7

"Now you die."

The Painbringer's eye flickers ominously as Arianwyn curses it with the shackles of darkness.

MAP

Chary - +2 speed/ref and +3 fire damage on hit to end her next turn
Whiteclaw
Kia
Tutavak
Painbringer - no action this turn; cursed by Arianwyn
Arianwyn

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

The warlock fixes his ancient racial foe with a steely gaze, "Past experience has proven the opposite." he replies lightly.

Female Drow Ardent 13

Chary would love to attack, but is too far away, so instead she simply (and quickly) hands Kia her stuff, with a large smile!

Minor or Move Action: hand gear to Kia.

Female Drow Ardent 13

Mulligan!!! (Chary's handler realized that her bonus from Tutavak will end this round, not the next one.)

Chary focuses on the giant, attempting make it careen around our little group.

Passage of Swords (daily): close burst 3: (13)+18=31 vs Fort.
On hit: target is dazed (SE).
Effect: slide target 5 squares and each ally adjacent to the target during this slide can make a melee basic attack against it as a free action, with a power bonus to the damage roll equal to your Charisma modifier (+5).
Slide target from G18 (reference point) to F19, F20, F21, F22, and end on E22. That should allow everyone but Whiteclaw a free melee basic attack with a +5 bonus to damage.

as Painbringer comes by Chary, she lashes out with her rapier: melee basic (8)+ 18=26 vs AC. Damage = (6)+7+5=18 AND +3 Fire damage.

Mulligan granted :)

The Painbringer screeches as Chary catches it unawares and bustles it past the group and into the undergrowth. As the movement ends, her rapier sneaks out, but fails to connect with the howling giant.

Whiteclaw grips her axe and prepares herself.

Arianwyn, Tutavak and Kia all get a free basic melee with a +5 to damage as it passes. Arianwyn and Kia are unarmed.

MAP

Kia
Tutavak
Painbringer - no action this turn; cursed by Arianwyn; dazed (se)
Arianwyn
Chary
Whiteclaw - readied action (Thorn Strike)

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

1d20 + 18 ⇒ (8) + 18 = 261d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Duh - missed daze and bonus. 28 to hit, 14 damage

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

So... I'm going to slap him? OK...
Unarmed basic (with psionic awesomeness bonus):
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 151d4 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Rock those inherent boni!

Arianwyn feels himself imbued with psionic power and attempts a punch.

Female Eladrin Warlord/10

Kia is taken a bit by surprise as well as she was expecting Chary to pass her a weapon. So her attempt to do some passing damage was an abject failure. (I rolled a 1).

She hisses "Weapons!" to Chary and (hopefully) gets her bow and sword back.

Taken by surprise by Chary's sudden shifting of the Painbringer, none of the group can take advantage. Arianwyn and Kia both feel weapons passed into their hands. The Painbringer's howls are likely to bring some attention unless he is dealt with swiftly.

MAP

Tutavak
Painbringer - dazed (se)
Arianwyn
Chary
Whiteclaw - readied action (Thorn Strike)
Kia

M Human / Kargzant Hybrid Fighter/Ranger 14 / Soul Igniter

"Just one," Tutavak declares. Switching weapons, he looses two arrows, though his aim is not to his usual standards.

Minor: Switch weapons. Minor: Quarry. Standard: Biting Volley -- two shots vs Ref, crit on 18, quarry damage.
1d20 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 18 + 2 = 291d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 81d20 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 18 + 2 = 301d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 172d6 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9

Despite his misgivings, Tutavak lands one blow on the Painbringer, causing slightly more damage than he'd suspected.

Forgot to note the Painbringer's aura. I don't think it affects anything so far, so I'll just make sure it's duly noted now.
Sadistic Fury - aura 5
Creatures within the aura gain +1 to damage rolls and -1 to all defenses. Whenever a creature is reduced to 0hp within the aura, the Painbringer gains a +1 to damage (stackable) to the end of the encounter.

Dazed as he is, the Painbringer can do little but make the best of his situation and befuddle the entire group with horrific visions.

Painful Visions (Will), close burst 4. On hit target is dazed (se)
Targets Whiteclaw, Tutavak, Chary, Arianwyn and Kia
1d20+21=39 - v Whiteclaw. Hits.
1d20+21=36 - v Tutavak. Hits.
1d20+21=38 - v Chary. Hits.
1d20+21=29 - v Arianwyn. Hits.
1d20+21=38 - v Kia. Hits.

Painbringer save v daze: 1d20+2=8. No.

Ooops. Everybody's dazed, Dave. Everybody's dazed.

Cursegrind vs Fort (unarmed)
1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 172d10 + 13 ⇒ (3, 1) + 13 = 17

Arianwyn snarls and mentally compresses dark energy around the giant.

Save:
1d20 ⇒ 6

Arianwyn's dark powers are buffeted aside by the strength of his ancestral foe.
