Dragon and Dungeon Transition Discussion

First, I have loved Dungeon and Dragon, and have appreciated everything that Mona et al. have done for the magazines: each one has been better than the last.

But, in a way, paizo subscribers are getting what they want. Adventure Paths over six months with lots of content. GameMastery modules. New monsters, new NPCs, new rules, extensive backdrops... Everything that people have called for.

And now Paizo can do it.

Not only that, but with the same authors, same artists, the same high quality that we have grown accustomed to.

On the one hand, I am saddened that the magazine are dead. But I belive that what Paizo will accomplish beyond the magazine will be a step above the magazines themselves. The magazines, in many ways, has proven to restrictive of a medium, and Paizo is breaking out of it.

Congratulations!

And I look forward to the future.

It's true!

While the thought that issues of Dragon and Dungeon will no longer be arriving in my mailbox is crushing, I am very excited about these new offerings.

Think about it, Erik and Co. are what made the old mags great again, and now, free of any creative restrictions, they can do so much more!

It may seem like I'm being overzealous here, but I have some inside info on Pathfinder, and I can say without a doubt that content-wise, it will be far far superior to Dungeon in every way. Believe me....it's not the Yerba Mate talking...I'm clean I swear! :-)

I can still remember reading Dragon and Dungeon in my old room at my folks house when I was only twelve.

I bet in thirty years, I'll still remember opening the very first Pathfinder when I get my hot little hands on it. I am certain Pathfinder will knock our socks off...look at the masterminds behind it all: Erik Mona, James Jacobs, and the rest of Paizo's titanic creative team. The very same people that have been delivering glory to our mailboxes for the past several years. I wish I could zoom down to the FLGS and grab issue #1 right now!!! Curses!!!

I'm in the same boat. Hit emotionally at the loss of the magazines, and optimistic that without having the restrictions of a licensee Paizo can blow past what they've done before.

No pressure guys :-)

Indeed. While I am heartbroken by the loss of the magazine that got me into D&D in the first place, I look forward to the future, and can't wait to get my hands on Pathfinder. Paizo has always delivered top-notch material and I can't wait to see what they have in store.

I too am exited. Change is always that way. Paizo has done a great job with Dungeon and Dragon magazines. I believe the people here will continue through the next few years. I will miss holding a new issue if Dungeon & Dragon. But, I think Paizo's success and it seems real loyal following, will keep the company going and producing quality gaming material.

I must thank Paizo for developing such a great community online with these message boards. I am a big fan of good leadership, Paizo has done a great job of leading the development of our online Paizo Community. I don't check any message boards but this one, for anything not just gaming. Until I started posting here, I never thought I would be chatting with anyone online.

Thank you Paizo.

While I too am sad to see Dungeon and Dragon departing, I have hope that Pathfinder will rock hard enough to make things all better.

Hmmm....

While I agree that the long campaign arcs coming from Pathfinder are going to be good, not everyone will be able to use them, certainly not every campaign arc. This means we'll be paying top dollar for alot of content that we're not going to use.

1) Lets say Pathfinder does an Expedition to the Barrier Peaks campaign arc. Face it, some gaming groups don't want lasers and computers in their homebrew. They are not going to pay $84 for 6 months of Pathfinder just for the Froghemoth.

2) We've seen that you need all of the Adventure Path adventures before you can really run AoW or SCAP. With Pathfinder we have to waith 6 months before we can start the campaign being published. If we use elements from the campaign in other homebrew adventures we will have ruined the Pathfinder campaign. I can't use Balabar Smenk or Kazmojen in one of my homebrew adventures and then reuse them when we start AoW or SCAP. This will not work.

I hope Gamemastery modules are good because Pathfinder sounds neat but useless and costineffective.

I too have high hopes for the pathfinder series; however I too am aware of the limitations of such a format: Namely that unless you are playing the path you will have limited resources available from the series.

Eg: In the recent issues of Dungeon, there have been adv's for varying levels of play. In any given mag you could find high, med and low level adventures, so if you were not playing the path you still would have a reason to buy the mag. The majority of Pathfinders' customers will be people who are playing or intend to play the path. People looking to run a one off or integrate published stuff into their own campaigns will likely turn to Goodman games or the like.

I'm irked the the people who "own" D&D would end the traditions of these mags. As a result I will put my money into other institutions which are moving the game forward.

Keep up the good work Piazo.
