Barid Nitha Venka |
Barid clears his throat gently, "*ahem* General, I think you're seeing too far into the future again. We should probably go tell Venture Captain Dreng that he won't be getting his wine this evening and the reason why. Though I do agree, visiting Fimbrik is probably our most sensible course of action at this point in time."
slin2678 |
Since she's here anyway... Janira was more than happy to help Kontha get back on her feet.
You head for the Grand Lodge figuring that would be the place to find Dreng, and you are correct. When informed of your discovery he smiles slyly, as if he already knew the secret and says, "It is important that Pathfinder Agents respect the finds and claims of their colleagues, this exciting mystery is yours to pursue. I would, however, request that you hand over any documents not related to Agent Eylysia so that I can get others decrypting and collating the contents for proper study."

The wizard's house is as good a place to begin as any. says the half orc after thanking Janira for helping the Kontha to heal.
Bozmir the Rather-Pretty |
Bozmir's eyes narrow into a dirty look at Dreng. "How went the undercover operation?" he asks in a monotone.
Agreeing with the next plan Bozmir asks, "Should we prepare to break in?" He's unsure if everyone heard his previous suggestion and also invites any words on the matter from Dreng.

The group begins its investigations and with a little help the Arcanamirium Fimbrik's home is quickly found. A brick step leads to Fimbrik’s front entrance, which is locked with a rusty simple lock. Numerous stacks of newspapers, roughly 2 years’ worth of monthly copies, are piled around the door and crammed into a thin slot at its base. Each rounded corner of the building has a large window, allowing you to look into the structure without difficulty. The main door is in the south and it has small windows as well allowing you to see into the room.

the tables are clean.
[spoiler=Room D2]This chamber contains enough chairs, pillows, and desks to accommodate at least six visitors. Watching from the window you see a gnome with blue hair and wearing a green hat enter the room and sit down at the desk to read a newspaper.
Barid Nitha Venka |
Barid looks at the newspapers and the state of the lock with something like amusement in his face. "Well, I'm not sure if he's even around with how these look." His look changes to one of astonished realization, "Or he's just a slob and doesn't go out much..."
General Dissa Ray |
Perception: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
"This looks like a pretty nice place. I wonder why he subscribes to so many different newspapers? He must read all day." Dissa states plainly, then turns to his companions, "Should we knock?"
Bozmir the Rather-Pretty |
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
"I think so," Bozmir answers Barid, "I'm surprised that the paperboy has no concern for the gnome and this mess has gone unreported. Let me scout around."
He walks around the right side of the house and peering into the Northeast window he returns to the party.
"Well actually," Bozmir retracts his previous statement as he comes back around the right side of the building, "He's in the Northeast room. I don't think he noticed me."
"It was all your ideas to ask the gnome politely, despite me protesting and saying he won't be willing to help. So go ahead, knock. Or how about some of us go knock on the window to distract him while the sneakier among us break in through the front?"
Jezakay |
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
"Guys, there are two of him; one at a bookcase in the study, and one in the room with all the desks and chairs." Says Jeza, asking, "Do any of you think this might be a wizardly trick?"
Barid Nitha Venka |
Barid shakes his head, "Sadly I don't have the knowledge of spells that would determine if it was. He could just be really fast. Here, I'll look in this window with the desks and chairs, and someone else look in the window of the study. If we both see him, it's probably a trick. If not," Barid shrugs, "we're all having a mass hallucination?"
slin2678 |
Whoops. I realized Room D2 description was lost somehow.
This chamber contains enough chairs, pillows, and desks to accommodate at least six visitors. You see a gnome with blue hair and a green hat sitting in a chair reading a newspaper. He does not seem to notice you looking through the window.
EDIT: I see how I messed up. The description is in the Perception spoiler.
Bozmir the Rather-Pretty |
Bozmir attempts to Detect Magic into the northeast room, focusing mostly on the figure, but not ignoring other auras.
General Dissa Ray |
"With everyone around the house, he's probably not real. I'll go to the other window to let Barid knock. If that doesn't work, we should let Barid knock to get us all inside." He seems to remember his friend having a way with doors. "You used to get us into the worst of places without much trouble."
Dissa trots off to one of the unattended windows, and vacates the porch and entryway for Barid.
Barid Nitha Venka |
Barid smirks with Dissa's comments. "Heh, so long as that plank earlier was a fluke. Let's see if I can work my magic."
Barid knocks on the door gently, hoping to attract the attention of anyone that may be within without attracting the attention of those passing by the house.

General Dissa Ray |
Arranged. Technically off map, but I said I would trade Barid for window-watching while he knocked on the door. I'll be immediately southwest of the window to D3.
"Barid, my friend, you always have been exceptionally well-received." Dissa chuckles at his friends consistent ability to open doors. It seems his skills are reliable as ever.

In case that fails, trying to at least discern the magic school:
K Arcana: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
It's so obvious but these terrible rolls! Dammit Bozmir, be smarter! I assume the aura is at the location of the gnome, so:
"There's a spell on him," Bozmir slinks over to Jezakay and asks, "can you figure out what it is?"
Jezakay |
Jeza says "I don't know, I didn't study spells."
Jeza casts detect magic and tries for a 10 check on knowledge arcane. Arcane(untrained): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
"Dulomak, did you study spells?", asks Jeza.
slin2678 |
You detect auras for illusion and conjuration throughout the room. It's hard to pinpoint the source.
As Barid enters the room, the area under sofa explodes in light and three red beetles appear in the room.
Squares with furniture in it is considered difficult terrain.

Psst... You forgot Jeza again!
Barid twists and pulls his rapier from its sheathe with a cry. "Ware! This place has bed-bugs! ENORMOUS bed-bugs!"

It takes Bozmir quite a bit of time to circle around the outside of the house.

He ends the beetle's existence only for it to disappear in a puff of smoke. "Well...That was unexpected."
He then begins to search the various rooms for any indications of where Fimbrik has gone.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Bozmir the Rather-Pretty |
I take it the beetle leaves no body.
"Something is very off here," Bozmir says, puzzled. "First, the illusion and conjuration auras. Now, an unnatural interplanar being which could only have been summoned. See how it leaves no body.
I think good old Fimbrik set a trap for us. We should be very careful as we continue on."
He uses Detect Magic again, recasting it as need be. He just tries to pinpoint the origin of each aura.
If I can take 20 on Perception: 24.
Is the staircase there as per the map?
slin2678 |
The house is fairly quick to go through. You notice that the two Finbrick's in rooms D2 and D4 are just illusions.
On the northwest windowsill of D2, you discover a potion of cure moderate wounds and a potion of lesser restoration. You also find a note. Karina Clamp is written on the back of the note in similar handwriting.
There is nothing else of interest in the house.
Bozmir the Rather-Pretty |
"Yes, it could have been. Then the conjuration was from the potion..."
Reading the note, Bozmir sighs heavily and passes it on.
Barid Nitha Venka |
Barid takes the note from Bozmir scanning over it briefly, "Huh, wiffle. Must be gnome for something important. Well it looks like we have a name now, maybe even one that resides on the wall of names at the lodge. Should we head there or to the tomb of the architect?"
