Survivors have described the experience of petrification, or being turned to stone as they called it, akin to the kind of numbness one often experiences in the legs or arms, but affecting the whole body. The subjects spoke of a crackling sound filling their ears, likely the sound of bone stiffening first. None of them have any recollection of the actual petrified stage, and remember only returning back to consciousness once the effect had been reversed.
