You could still take a 5-foot move though--it's sort of the move you get when you don't actually move. Given the terrain and the size of the enemy though It might be safer to go with a melee weapon. I figure that Creat made a sort of show of opening the door, so you probably have whatever it is you normally have in your hand when surveying a dangerous archeological site.

Color spray is mind-affecting.
GM Andrew |
@Tanna, you can 5 foot step (non-action), pull out crossbow (move action), and shoot (standard action). However, right now the spiders are behind improved cover so would get +8 to their AC. It's probably best to ready an action to attack with the crossbow when they come out of an alcove. I'm gonna count that as a readied attack, and will roll it in my next post if you haven't yet.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
@Laeowynne I'll give you a chance to change your action, especially since your character made the knowledge check about mind-affecting on these things. :)

A recap of the room you're in...
Bodies wrapped in age-yellowed linens lie in alcoves lining both sides of this wide corridor. Thick cobwebs hang from the ceiling and drape the walls of the crypt; everything is coated in a deep layer of dust. There is a set of double doors to the north end of the corridor.
If someone makes that perception check or points out what they find...
Laeowynne Faelandalan |
"That was exhausting and dangerous. Glad we all came out of that alive....Look at these strange symbols interlaced on the walls of the catacombs...I wish i was a religious scholar right about now."
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Tyranius Stormbringer |
Knowledge Religion: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Tyranius has a look at the symbols. Those are Pharasman. Though they are different than what is used today. Back then, Pharasma was worshiped more solely as a goddess of death than she is with all three of her aspects now (birth, death, and fate).
He wipes his hands smoothly along the symbols in reverence. We should keep moving. We have a long way to go to get out of here still. He begins to make his way to the set of double doors to the north.
Tanna Giantsmite |
Tanna nods in agreement to Laeowynne's statement as she continues to study her surroundings looking for clues to the crypts and the mystery.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
She then turns to Tyranius and looks, eyes wide, as she tries to continues to learn all she can about the numerous religions of this area, but specifically that of Pharasma.
Knowledge-Religion: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
She takes out her journal and makes some notes and copies some of the symbols, consulting with the more experienced Half-Orcish Cleric on his perceptions of their meaning.

Opening the door to the north.
The ceiling of this cavernous chamber vaults to a height of sixty feet, forming an architectural wonder unsupported by any visible columns or buttresses. Forty feet overhead, a wide stone bridge with an elaborately carved railing arches over the chamber from north to south, joining two sets of massive bronze doors at either end. You are actually on that bridge. The central portion of the chamber contains an inlaid spiral symbol (the same type as seen in the previous room) and is recessed into the floor, with eight staircases leading up to a wide ledge that encircles the room ten feet above. On this ledge stand bronze doors to the east and west. Eight larger-than-life statues stand upon the ledge as well, evenly spaced around the room’s circumference—seven carved from white stone, and the eighth carved from black stone.
The door you opened is what leads the bridge across. It is a 40 ft. drop down to the lower level.
I placed the descriptions of each statue on the map. Unless someone wants to find a way to climb down, the only doors the exit on this level are the doors to the north.
I'm using the same labeling as I used on the map.
1. Karzoug, Runelord of Greed
2. Alaznist, Runelord of Wrath
3. Sorshen, Runelord of Lust
4. Krune, Runelord of Sloth
5. Zutha, Runelord of Gluttony
6. Xanderghul, Runelord of Pride
7. Belimarius, Runelord of Envy
You do not recognize the 8th statue.

"Or we could use rope." Creat says producing some made of silk.
Looking around he adds: "I think we've found the legendary Lost Museum of Obscure Pole-Arms."
Laeowynne Faelandalan |
"This might be important. I think I know who these statues represent. These are the famed Runelords of old. I read a book on them once. The runelords were aligned to a certain sin. Karzoug- Runelord of Greed, Alaznist- Runelord of Wrath, Sorshen- Runelord of Lust, Krune- Runelord of Sloth, Zutha- Runelord of Gluttony, Xanderghul- Runelord of Pride, and Belimarius, Runelord of Envy. I do not know this last one here..." Laeowynne tells the others as they see the statues...
Valeros The Free |
Valeros amazingly has a +3 to Climb, even with gear!
"Polearms are too clunky in close quarters. Plus you end up trading away part of your defense for minimal extra damage."
The fighter will watch and help as necessary to set up the rope.
Tanna Giantsmite |
Knowledge-Religon: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Tanna moves in cautiously to the east, her magically lit buckler illuminating the great hall. She approaches the eighth statue, carved in black stone, looks up and says, "This tall woman with three faces looking in three directions must represent Pharasma... me thinks."
She then takes in every detail of it, without touching it... sketching some of the finer points in her journal, looking for anything more unusual that it being carved in different colored stone.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
On the mention of climbing by Creat, Tanna also produces a coil of rope and a grappling hook stating, "A good Dwarf never leaves home without one, at least that's what the Nuns at the convent used to say!"
Tyranius Stormbringer |
Don't be so hasty in climbing into a hole when we don't even know what is around us yet. Tyranius growls. We could have whatever is in here falling in around us.
Creat the Cheat |
"Well then you should be aware of how much more potential energy you have up here. Besides, who said anything about climbing? You just tie this to your belt and we'll just lower you. That and I don't want to leave yet either without looking over the other doors. We could use the chime but why waste it when we have another path to tread?"
He gives them a good 2 minute once over for 25 (26 for traps). If he doesn't notice anything he give them try.
