We have two Faces!
GM Emmjay |
"My colleague here is correct. We'll aid you avoid unwanted attention. You know we are Pathfinders..." Zhatara stares at Malik for a second saying this "...so you know we are resourceful. Tell us what the problem is and we'll help you solving it"
As a group you all manage to calm Zefiro down enough to at least have him tell you what's wrong. "What's the problem? I'll tell you what the problem is. My friend Mireille is in danger of being "disappeared" by the Order of the Rack. Mireille is a valuable historical asset. I need your help to secure Mireille's safety. She needs help, and I need you to help her. I'm not going to help you until you help her." Zefiro pauses to take a deep breath. "Why is she in trouble, you ask? Well, she is spreading the truth. The unrevised history about Cheliax's past, and those guards on the corner were watching me hoping I would lead them to her. Help her, please. If you do, I have some items here at the museum that might prove helpful to you all."
Smiley Stonegirdle |
I've got all the items I need right here.
Smiley holds up a gnarled fist, calloused from numerous fistfights.
Nali Faina |
Nali scowls, both at the state of affairs and the state of the city.
"Now, diminished makes sense. Truth should never be prey, but it is here, no? Where is she, how do we help her, and how can you help us?" She asks the historian, making a gesture like she was about to grab her bow, only to remember she had to leave it behind.
Jacques N'Fey |
Jacques playfully elbows Smiley in the ribs.
"I could really use an Efficient Quiver and a Bow to hide in it, but I'll manage one way or another.
Well, Zefiro, you're in luck. Rescuing damsels in distress just happens to be my specialty.
Tell us where she is and we will escort her to safety. I assume you have found some place that equates to 'safety' to escort her to?"
Zhatara Smirsset |
"It will be done. Keep your head down and let us work our magic... Your friend won't be "disappeared", your worries should. Tell us where to go. And while you wait for the good news please research the subject we asked you about earlier..." comments Zhatara in a nononsense tone.
Kolris Isimlothe |
"We can certainly help your friend... but you should also be prepared to obey Chelaxian laws once done." Kolris puts a hand up to stop the inevitable objections that he senses coming. "The Pathfinder Society is here now; let us help you. We can connect you with arms of the Society that could help preserve the true history of Cheliax, while at the same time you only advertise the 'official' storyline."
"Cheliax is a nation of laws, first and foremost. While not always just, they must be respected if you intend to work within its borders."
GM Emmjay |
"You will help? Good! Thank you! Thank you!" He heads over to a nearby shelf and hands over two items, a scroll and a rod. "This" he says, pointing to the scroll - old and brittle with age - " is a Destined Acolyte's Scroll. When activated, it applies to Bless and Consecrate in a large radius. What makes this so great is that when in the presence of the undead, consecrate can be ended and it applies Holy to all weapons wielded. At least, I think it does, I'm not completely sure. The rod, on the other hand, allows a caster to cast spells as non-lethal damage, a couple of times per day."
If you use the scroll, the duration is doubled.
"Now, hurry off to the Fox Den. Tell the doorkeeper that I sent you, he will let you in. You can't miss Mireille. She has long chestnut colored hair, and generally dresses in clothes that match her hair. Time is of the essence, if you have any questions, ask them quickly." As he talks, Zefiro jots down directions to the Fox Den on a scrap of paper and gives it to you.
Zhatara Smirsset |
"Thank you, we'll be on our way now. No matter the situation, we'll manage to save your friend, you have our word" says Zhatara moving towards the door.
Smiley Stonegirdle |
Jacques asked the questions I was going to.
Nali Faina |
Nali gingerly takes the scroll and rod from the nervous historian and offers up the rod to the others. "I can use the scroll, but this is not good for me," she admits. Returning her attention to Balinger, she adds,"We will protect your friend."
After they leave Balinger's presence, Nali stops them for a moment. "A question to everyone. Guards are watching him to follow. Guards know us, somehow. They seem to know we are here for him. They leave when we appear. Does that mean they try to follow us? Should we watch?"
Malik Rimeclan |
I'm not sure whether we can get her to board the ship unnoticed. Did you see how many guards were stationed there?", Malik responds to Jacques, then turns to Nali. "We did openly declare we were heading here. No point in hiding the fact. A few of us could go grab some wine from the market and get back to check whether the guards are on our tail.", he shrugs.
GM Emmjay |
"The ship? I don't want to know where you are going to take here, if I am arrested, I don't want to be able to give myself, or her, away! Now, hurry up and leave! Go and make sure she is safe!"
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++THE FOX DEN++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The smell of raw fish, stale sweat, and old booze permeates this section of the West Drenches. Broken pathways are slick with mud where they aren’t simply flooded. Small wooden buildings are built around narrow canals brimming with dark water that flows swiftly out to sea. Sounds of a busy business district quiet intermittently, at which time the groaning boats and boisterous sailors in the nearby port are just loud enough to hear.
The Fox Den is a modest-sized building with boarded windows and a badly faded sign that depicts a fox hiding behind its own bushy tail. There’s a small stained glass window set into the front door with a patch of fogged white glass that provides the hostess, Velia, with a view of the cluttered front step. The door opens, just wide enough so that Velia and you can see each other. She looks at you "Can I help you?"
Smiley Stonegirdle |
Zefiro sent us. We have business with Mireille.
Kolris Isimlothe |
Kolris does his best to keep an eye out for any guards--or anyone else, that is--who may be following the group as they head towards the Fox Den.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
He nods when Smiley mentions Zefiro's name. "Indeed. We were told we could find her here." He looks over his shoulder, hoping that Velia will recognize their urgency.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Zhatara Smirsset |
"Zefiro says you are not safe here and asked us to get you out of town before Thrune's lapdogs find you. We are here to make sure his wish goes heeded and hopefully fulfilled..."
Aid anotehr (Diplomacy) check: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25
GM Emmjay |
"Zefiro says you are not safe here and asked us to get you out of town before Thrune's lapdogs find you. We are here to make sure his wish goes heeded and hopefully fulfilled..."
You haven't made it in the door to talk to the girl. I am sure you aren't talking to Velia, who is at the door asking why you are there.....
GM Emmjay |
Jacques whispers back, "I suppose he might have, but that could easily have been a slip of the tongue. It would be good to be on guard, though."
Great catch! That was intentional.
GM Emmjay |
+++++++++++++OFFICIAL NOTICE++++++++++++++++++++
I know I posted that there would be a Thanksgiving break 11-22 to 11-26. However, because of what will happen after the door is opened, this is as good a place as any (and leaves a great spot to resume from) to stop. I will NOT be posting here again until the 26th. Enjoy the break, the fun will resume shortly!
Zhatara Smirsset |
Got it, sorry for the misunderstanding, I'd like to rephrase, if possible
Zhatara moves towards the door and speaks to Velia:"Zefiro Bellinger sends us. We are here to meet with a friend who might be threading on dangerous waters with sharks coming for her from all sides"
Diplomacy check: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
GM Emmjay |
Looking you up and down, Velia studies your party for a moment, and then finally opens the door. "Please, remain silent" she says.
Inside, a cheery fire warms the cool sea air, and nine young children of varied ages sit around Mireille Goldenglow, a slender, middle-aged elven woman with chestnut colored hair and a simple, yet elegant rust colored dress. Her eyes are closed, and she commands the attention of the children with a tale about Rius Galdaeon, a kind Chelish architect and paladin of Shelyn, whose allegiances aligned with Chelish loyalists when Thrune began to take control. He viewed Thrune’s reliance on devils as a blight on Chelish achievements and so confronted Baraxial, a powerful barbed devil called to aid the Esoterium Lodge. Their battle shook the foundations of Aroden’s Arch, and it’s said great pieces of it crumbled into the sea when Baraxial dragged Rius with him back to Hell. She says the entire city felt each blow land, and it was the signal she needed to flee from Corentyn while civil war raged on.
Her story finished, she opens her eyes, smiles at you, along with the children, and says "Welcome to the Fox Den. What did you think of the story?"
Nali Faina |
Nali pauses for a second as the group enters the building. Then she turns and slips back out. "Keeping watch," she says quickly, to explain her actions, "Just in case. Three knocks on door means trouble." And with that, she slips into the shadows to watch and wait.
Stealth(just in case): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16
Zhatara Smirsset |
"A nice story and one that rings true too. And in places like Cheliax the truth can be a dangerous thing indeed... Well met, my name is Zhatara and you must be Mireille Goldenglow. We were asked to get you to safety by a mutual friend. Zefiro Bellinger"
Diplomacy check: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
Malik Rimeclan |
"Yep - Sounds almost like something that could have happened.", Malik adds. "I'd like to to hear more, if you ever find the time."
Kolris Isimlothe |
Kolris looks into the shadows of the room as if he expects Chelish guards and devils to emerge even inside this safehouse.
"It's a dangerous story, I think. One that endangers these children as much as--or more than--it endangers you. I hope you've thought deeply about what that means." He shakes his head. "It's possible to teach people to think for themselves without using banned stories to do so. But never mind that, the Pathfinder Society will step in and protect you from your folly. How can we help?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Smiley Stonegirdle |
Smiley's eyes go from glossed-over to alert as Velia finishes.
Har! Well, that's a fine story. A right fine story!
Diplomacy, Aid Another: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
To those who know him, Smiley does not appear to have understood the story in the slightest.
GM Emmjay |
Nali, I need a Perception Check, please.
"Zefiro sent you???"[b] she asks in genuine surprise. [b]"Well, I can't fault him for being concerned, as I have been in trouble with the law before. And, while being disappeared isn't a pleasant thought, what I am accused of doing would only warrant caution on my part." Mireille continues on for a moment or two telling the group about prior incidents that she has been at the center of, or been accused of, and why the Hellknights are interested in her.
I need a Handle Animal and/or Perception Check, please from everyone EXCEPT Nali.
Kolris Isimlothe |
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
"Well, we are here to help." Kolris repeats, though his lack of enthusiasm is apparent. "Zefiro was not specific on how we were to help you. We came to Cheliax by ship, and could try to smuggle you on board. The docks are swarming with guards though; this will be very difficult. Do you perhaps have any thoughts of your own on what might be a safe option for you?"
Jacques N'Fey |
Another damsel who won't even admit the danger she is in. Why do these simple missions always end up so complicated?
Jacques will watch Mireille to see if she is trying to hide any detaild about the Hellknight's interest.
Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
"Perhaps the stories you tell are more dangerous than you realize. Politics is a fickle monster and sometimes even the slightest embarrassment or hint of opportunity can lead to the death of many innocents.
Zefiro was being watched, and he seems as if he knows what danger he is referring to.
Perhaps there is some place we could escort you outside the city where nobody would think to look?"
Diplomacy AA: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Zhatara Smirsset |
Perception check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
"I think you are understimating the danger the hellknights pose to you and to these children. Remember: they don't make any fine distinction between grown ups and young ones when it comes to their twisted sense of law..."
Wasn't a roll of 31 enough to sway her?
Malik Rimeclan |
Malik stands quietly in the background, seemingly in thought, and biting his fingernails.
"What trouble with the law, exactly?", he asks, eyes darting across the room.
GM Emmjay |
You spot at least two guards heading to the inn. You make it inside before the have a chance to spot you, but you figure the group at about 30 seconds before they arrive.
GM Emmjay |
Jacques and Kolris, either through luck, skill, or just plain experience, that when things seem to easy they aren't, take a few moments to go to the windows and scan outside. Looking outside they notice at least two guards making their way to the inn. They think that they have about 30 seconds before they arrive.
SLIDE 9
Mireille gasps as Jacques relay the bad news. "Hurry, there is a secret exit over here. Marked on map S Lets get out of here. If we can sneak past them, or get past them without them seeing me, well, all the better. I have a place nearby that I can use as a safehouse. Get me there, please. Marked on map, T Don't fight them unless you have to, I don't want to see you get in as much (or more) trouble as I am in!!!
For this event, you will be controlling Mireille (RED), 30'Speed. She fights only to defend herself, and wants to remain out of sight of the guards as much as she can (she's trying to escape unseen, not give herself away!
Smiley Stonegirdle |
@GM, which way are the guards coming from?
GM Emmjay |
@GM, which way are the guards coming from?
Where they are coming from doesn't really matter. What matters is that before you can get everyone out (from any exit) they will have posted up where they want to be, and you won't know where that is until you get outside and find them/run into them/spot them.
Jacques N'Fey |
"Maybe a distraction?
Smiley and I can go out the front door and get into a really loud bar fight to grab their attention, while the rest of you sneak out the back door.
We'll slip away (or bribe our way out) and catch up with you guys later."
Nali Faina |
Nali slips back into the inn and foregoes mentioning the guards since the others have also spotted them. She nods at Jacques's plan, and looks to Mireille, "If you trust me, I can make you move faster, then we can sneak away quicker." Without waiting for a response, she whispers a blessing from the river rapids and taps herself on the chest, allowing the rushing of the current speed her.
Casting Expeditious Retreat on myself. If Mireille consents, Nali will cast it on her too, then will be more then willing to lead her away.
Zhatara Smirsset |
"I will slow them down, we have done nothing wrong after all. Move quickly and stay safe. We'll see each other later on" says Zhatara as she waits for the guards to arrive.
Zhatara's plan is to distract the guards asking them questions and claiming they have no right to search the place buying time for the others to escape
Jacques N'Fey |
"I suppose that does have the added benefit of us not risking being put in jail, though I dislike leaving anyone alone.
Good enough, though. Quick, let's get out the door and to safety."
Kolris Isimlothe |
Kolris nods. "Zhatara's plan is the safest. Let's go." He wastes no time heading to the secret door, where he quickly pops out to see if the coast is clear. If so, he waves the others out, letting the much quicker Nali and Mireille out first.
"You two should go together. Skirt the outside of those buildings there, and meet us by the river crossing. I'll head around the near side so I can warn you if there's trouble ahead. Go with speed!"
Proposed path for Nali and Mireille in blue, Kolris' intended path in green. 25' of movement to get just outside the door to scout.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Malik Rimeclan |
Malik seems concerned about leaving a single person deal with the hellknights. "I'd prefer if we all just sneaked out, but it's your call. Good luck!"
He proceeds to the concealed exit and tries to stick to back alleys.
GM Emmjay |
BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG! The doors rattles with each pounding of the fist. "Open up Mireille, I know you're in there," the guard bellows between blows!
Map updated to show at least 1 guard at the door. I'm giving players until tonight to plan/move/act. After that time they will be botted to go with the group. Please make sure you move your token to where you are planning on going...
Malik Rimeclan |
Are we doing the movement by turns, or is there a specific timeframe we have to move? As in, I made a double move on the map, which is an equivalent of 6 seconds (1 turn). How far can we move?
GM Emmjay |

Right now, because Initiative hasn't been rolled (yet), and might not be, I still want to keep it simple at 1 turn's move.
Jacques N'Fey |
Double Moved my token, but don't want to try creating arrows while on my phone. Nali should move Mirielle with her, I think, since they will be moving fast.
Jacques quickly skirts around the edge of the building opposite the Fox Den, then attempts to hide in the shadows.
