He has now +18 to jump.

Alonso simply floats over and has a look at what is over there.

Not sure what all the fuss is about, life would be much simpler if everyone had access to long duration flight. These lazy youngsters, not willing to put the effort in I suppose...

Oggil nods to the paladin and then joins him in a jump across the gap.
Takes then for 17

Ragnar - 8 dmg;

Sir Godfrey (carrying Theodore?), Alonso, Oggil, (as well as The Shadow? and Lem?), all easily move to the top of the second pillar, from which spot they can see another opening in the cliff face, which has a small ledge that leads to a set of heavy bronze doors. From where they stand they can just make out that the doors appear to have a key hole.

For those of you who wish to follow, it's a DC 10 Acrobatics check to jump from one ledge to the next. No need to roll unless you can fail.

"Oh. A door. Good spotting there."

Ragnar and Pookie can both make a DC 10 acrobatics check. Though a large constrictor snake jumping 10 feat is real nightmare fuel.

Alonso looks between the door they have found and the key.

So, do we think the key fits? Anyone want to give it a go? Do we want to use the wand of freedom of movement now? Hmm, I do seem full of questions today.

Assuming we are going in Alonso casts extended Shield, Heroism and Mirror Image (Images: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4) on himself.

Theodore holds a hand over his mouth. "Whoa whoa! Godfrey, take it easy! I don't wanna throw up, haha!"

"I hope the key fits, considering we haven't seen any other keyhole."

If people agree to use the wand, Theodore will oblige. He doesn't need it himself as he already cast it on himself.

It would be helpful to me if you can each give me a list of the current buffs that you have up, along with their duration, before you attempt the door.

"Yes friend Alonso, I would prefer to have my movements unhindered, use the wand of Freedom on me if you please!"Sir Godfrey will rather bravely jump across the gap to the ledge with the door, taking Theodore if he wishes to join the paladin for another free ride. "If you must re-experience your recent proclivities, please aim away from me! But unless another of you has a particular talent for dealing with traps, I shall take the risk in using the key on this door."

As he talks Godfrey will pull out a wand of shield, wait for everyone to be ready, and fiddle with it until he successfully casts on himself (Which takes no time at all), then attempt to open the door with the key immediately afterwards.

UMD Wand of Shield(Used before): 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 8 + 2 = 30

Godfrey has Freedom of Movement off the Wand, Bless Weapon from himself, and a hit of Shield from a wand when he opens the door. All listed under active spells.

Theodore responds. "Sure thing! Anyone who wants a charge take one."

Theodore has a rare moment of clarity. "For you front lines, I got a better Shield of Faith."

He casts Shield of Faith on Godfrey, Pookie, Oggil, and himself. +3 deflection bonus to AC, lasts 9 minutes. He'll extend the one on himself with his Versatile Metamagic Rod to be 18 minutes, so he only has one charge left on the rod.

He also casts Magic Circle Against Evil on himself. Lasts 90 minutes.

GODFREY, POOKIE, OGGIL: +3 deflection bonus to AC (Shield of Faith)

  • Longstrider - Cast each day, lasts 18 hours with the Versatile Metamagic Rod
  • Deathwatch - Cast at the valley below, lasts 90 minutes.
  • Freedom of Movement - Cast at the end of the last battle, lasts 90 minutes.
  • Shield of Faith - Just cast, lasts 18 minutes with the Versatile Metamagic Rod
  • Magic Circle against Evil - Just cast, 90 minutes.

Godfrey's spell list has been updated.

Emerald Spire slides |

Please update the positions of your tokens on the map, including putting any of yourselves who wish to be by the door over on the ledge to the right of it. At the very least, Sir Godfrey you should be there since you are using the key. There may not be room for all of you unless you squeeze.

It is a heavy bronze door and the key you found in the tomb room seems to fit it perfectly. When you insert the key it triggers a lengthy, 5-round-long unlocking process as the door retracts bolts and disables safeguards. So please consider that any round/level buffs, or spells such as Godfrey's shield spell, have 5 rounds reduced from their duration.

The door opens to reveal a room with a pool of clear water directly before you. Beyond that lies a set of steep stairs, at the top of which you can just glimpse an aging Garundi man wearing violet robes and gold armbands studded with jewels. His voice is calm yet vibrant as he asks the PCs in Osiriani, “Did the satrap send you to kill me?”

"So far the diamond and sapphire sages have reclaimed their places. But we were hoping to track down the amethyst sage..." he says, peering at the elderly figure, wondering if there was a sage jewel hidden in his robes.

"Look no further. I am Sinuhotep, and I bear the amethyst sage jewel." Here, he gestures at the large amethyst set in gold on his right armband. "I am pleased to learn that others of my order have also survived. I hope to rejoin them. Tell me, who now leads the sages?"

Sir Godfrey's shadow will slink just into the room, looking to see anything of interest that wouldn't be visible from the doorway. The paladin himself remains standing at the entryway with a sword in one hand and wand in the other while he lets the more social members of the party lead the discussion. "She asked us to find and recover you, new friend. So that you might rejoin the order. Though admittedly I question some of the actions your once friend reported, it is my duty to escort you."

Emerald Spire slides |

Sinuhotep seems pleased to learn that at least one of his apprentices has survived. "Ah, Saruna, yes, I can see why she might bear me a grudge. Still, in order to do great things, one must be willing to do what is needed." He takes the news of her hostility with the philosophical poise of one who has lived a long, long time.

Turning towards Alonso, he answers, “In this ancient place, I found the means to attain eternal life. I did not want the secrets of past ages to die with me, so I undertook the rites.”

As Sir Godfrey's shadow begins to cross the threshold, Sinuhotep holds up his hand. "Halt. I have not yet invited you in. We can converse quite nicely from where you are." Sir Godfrey, do you wish to proceed with the shadow's movement?

He does not respond directly to the questions about who might lead the order, or about his opinion of Tahonikepsu, except to say, "“Many scattered before the satrapy reached us, and we spoke little of our destinations in order to protect each other should one of us fall into Kelishite hands. However, I know of several who hid within Osirion, for I was the last to leave our stronghold. A few dared flee farther, and at least one sought refuge with the scholars of Tar Taargadth. As one of the sages, I will help you find them.”

Answering Sir Godfrey, Sinuhotep nods his head in appreciation. “I did what was necessary for survival—not for my own sake, but for the survival of the Jeweled Sages. How many people have you killed during your careers? How many nameless guards and servants you have slain? Were they all evil? Or was it just convenient for you to kill them?”

“Ever since I left my beloved Osirion, everything I have done has had a singular purpose: To recreate the order of the Jeweled Sages. What you have told me means that I can finally return home and rejoin the order. However, before I can leave, I need your help. My immortality also carries a curse, and I cannot leave unless a hateful creature that put the curse on me is destroyed. The question is: Will you slay this creature for me, set me free, and support my endeavor to rejoin the Jeweled Sages?”

Emerald Spire slides |

He is a lich. 4 questions. I'll answer the dialogue parts later when I have time.

Emerald Spire slides |

Sinuhotep considers Alonso's first question. "The form is just as you see me here. I have become what I am. And yes, I sacrificed much, and so did others. But then, what of the sacrifice if I had perished? The world would have lost all the things I’ve seen: war chariots of fire soaring through the night sky over Osirion, pharaohs of old speaking to me from beyond the Gate of the Dead, even the 56 visits of Aucturn’s Tear, which even now blazes brighter than it ever has as it once more approaches Golarion. All of those moments would be wiped away, like dust in the desert wind. My soul is bound to the jewel,” he says, tapping the purple gemstone in his right armband. “If one ceases to exist, the other must, too. You may question the choices I've made, perhaps you would have made different ones, but know that only through my efforts has all this knowledge been preserved.”

"As for my captor, I found evidence of a genie cult that resided here thousands of years before I arrived. It seems the genie’s name was Surma, and it is her curse that keeps me here. Upon her death, she turned into a pitiful aghash div, but make no mistake: she is far more powerful than most of her kind. To release me from this place, you will need to slay her.”

Theodore isn't exactly happy with either Lich or Div, however, not being Scarab Sages, he'll defer to those that are since this Lich is claiming he's a sage.

"Preserving yourself as a lich. Hrm. The question is... would you turn back now to your old self if given the chance?"

Emerald Spire slides |

Alonso recalls a fair bit about Liches. He remembers that they can deliver paralysis with their touch and that they have an aura of fear about them. They have the usual undead traits. They are particularly resistant to channeled energy and they have the ability to rejuvenate. If you want to hit one with a weapon it is helpful for the weapon to be both magical AND bludgeoning. And they are immune to cold, electricity, and polymorph effects.

Answering Oggil, Sinuhotep explains that he is not especially well-versed in extra-planar creatures, but he can tell you enough (that you can make a Knowledge (Planes) check to know something about it). Alonso, you recognize from his description that Surma must be an Aghash Div, an evil, extraplanar outsider. You may ask one question.

no peeking:

Sinuhotep perception to hear Alonso: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18

Answering Alonso, Sinuhotep inclines his head philosophically. "Ah, those were my apprentices. They had to sacrifice much, that the knowledge I hold be not lost forever. It is regrettable, I suppose."

Turning towards Theodore, "Ah, the process by which I attained immortality is not reversible, nor would I wish to give up eternal life now that I have attained it. However, I have no doubt that - with your help - I will be able to leave this place and resume my place among the Jeweled Sages. Together, we will accomplish great things!"

If it's not apparent by now, the scenario is essentially presenting you with a moral dilemma here. Do you wish to aid Sinuhotep, or destroy him? Aiding him will require that you destroy Surma, the Div who has imprisoned him. The scenario does specifically call out that, if you cannot agree amongst yourselves, that deference should be given to those PCs who are members of the Scarab Sages, since you are essentially deciding whether or not to allow a lich to rejoin the order.

Oggil, Helikon, and Sir Godfrey

Oggil doesn't have a moral concern about this, but he is a monk rather than a priest or paladin. He is clear about the value of the history that the lich offers and that his instructions are to bring the lich back. After that the other jewelled sages can determine the best course of action.

Theodore isn't really smart enough to ask the tough questions, but he's wise enough to understand consequences. He may worship a good deity, but a chaotic one.

"At the very least, you must admit that he provides us with information. A div guardian doesn't sound nearly as impressive of a find... even if it were to cooperate with us."

"Simply because you were not able to get through life without killing good people doesn't mean the same holds true for all of us, friend. I have had the care not to randomly slaughter innocents. As for those who choose to serve evil, they are responsible for their own actions. Which generally include murder, pillage, destruction, and culty activities. They make their choice and must live with the results." Sir Godfrey taps his blade on one of the mithril plates across his shoulder.

"Which brings us to the problem of you being a villain. You are a Lich, and I think not nearly as noble in your deeds as you claim. If my suspicions are right, you have stuck yourself to that jewel, not to guard it, but to use it as a shield against those that would make you answer for your crimes."

"As the hand of Sarenrae I am compelled to offer those vile a chance for atonement, but only once. Prove you have some remorse and let us strike you down and take the jewel from this place without a fight. You shall spare us dealing with the results of your actions for you that this Div represents, offer penance, and then spend some time thinking in solitude. By the time you come back from whatever abyss you must wait in, you will be before the Jeweled Sages and your once friend you wronged. Who can decide how to handle you."

The paladin seems completely ready to just charge in and cleave the Lich in two if it refuses the rather generous offer.

"He Sir Palanoose. You also consort with undead. Isn´t a shadow an undead? So jump of your high horse. You are nothing better than him! And lack the brain to notice!"

Emerald Spire slides |

Sinuhotep turns his attention to Sir Godfrey, "Ah yes, your judgment sounds very pretty. Aren't you the noble one? But who is that that accompanies you, like to your very shadow it appears? If my knowledge does not fail me - " here he almost seems to giggle, as if such a thing were possible - "if it does not fail me, you of the oh so bold words are accompanied by a creature of undeath not so different from myself. Much more primitive, to be sure, but really just another manifestation of the great principle that life and death are just two sides of the same question. Surely your dear Lady Sarenrae has taught you that much, no? You offer me atonement? Who are you to offer me anything? My task is clear and has been for many thousands of years now: to preserve the knowledge I hold - whatever the cost - until I can help to rebuild the great order of the Jeweled Sages."

"Be that as it may, if you will not let me rejoin my order, I must ask you, on whose authority? Do you speak for the Sages? Do you speak for the entire world? Would you destroy all my work and condemn all the history that lies within me to die, forever? If you are really such savages, prove to me that you truly lack any convictions and strike me down yourselves and destroy the past with your own hands."

So, by my count, of the 3 Scarab Sages characters, Oggil is inclined to accept Sinuhotep's proposal, Sir Godfrey is opposed, and Lem hasn't registered an opinion just yet (and he also hasn't posted for a few days) - anyone else want to weigh in or should the GM just pick which fight seems more fun to me? :-)

By the way, per my earlier post, I've moved Sir Godfrey's shadow back to the other side of the threshold - no head starts! If you want to move into the room you'll need to roll initiative.

Edit: Lem posted while I was writing all that. Sinuhotep seems entertained by the latest development in the conversation and looks around his room for a bowl of popcorn, before remembering with a sigh that liches have terrible difficulty keeping their teeth clean.

"Both of you are limited by your own stupidity, and paint it as my own." He speaks to the increasingly nonsensical Lem and Sinuhotep. "If you had eyes that could see, you'd see it is no evil creature. And I was not speaking of undead, but of villainy. Hear what I'm saying and not what you wish to just to throw an insult, little halfling friend."

"It is a returned spirit of a slain villain seeking redemption by doing good. Do not insult its efforts by comparing it to a man who slaughters dozens of his own friends to hide from his own fate, then declares himself worth their suffering because he fears judgement." He tests the weight of his sword in his hands. "Your words are confusing, Lich. I do, in fact, speak for the Sages. And I never said I would destroy the jewel, just beat you down until you stop moving. Then I can take the jewel back to people more experienced to decide what to do with it, since you've fled from your own actions by hiding in it. And since you can't be killed so easily, you can explain to the Sages themselves why your corruption of the artifact was acceptable."

"The only way I would lack conviction would be by failing my own now by accepting that what you offer is worth the cost, or even the only way. I offered you a way out, but you have proven to be the coward I assumed." Unless there's a compelling reason from the rest of the party, Godfrey fully intends to attack one of the mostly cliche evil creatures of this fantastical universe.

Oggil scratches his bald head.
"The mouse does not presume to know the motives of the Elephant, but must scamper from under its foot all the same." he starts.

"Sir Godfrey, I see no advantage in attempting to destroy the body of Sinuhotep here and now if you only propose to take the gem you think he exists within to the council of sages. He will reform with them, or go to them intact. The needless violence offers the chance of harm to both the amethyst jewel, and the sages long term good will for the order."

He then turns to the sage. "Although, if I understand this correctly, if we were to render this body...incomplete, you implied this would allow the jewel to leave and thus to break you from your cursed imprisonment here. So would this not in fact, be doing you a favour?"

Ragnar is an archery focused ranger with a large snake companion.

As a high ranking member of The Exchange Ragnar adds a +3 circumstance bonus to other players Day Job rolls.

Will have my profile updated to level 10 by tonight.

Please all go ahead and add Ragnar's +3 circumstance to your Day Job rolls now, so I don't have to remember to add it myself at the end of the scenario.

Just a quick note that I haven't heard anything from Helikon, so it's possible that you'll be proceeding with a party of 5 instead of 6. However, in this case you will still be playing high tier with the 4 player adjustment (with 5, your APL is 9.2).

Sorry for the delay in posting - I've had family visits for the past week - life should be returning to a more normal pace tomorrow.

Sir Godfrey: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Theodore: 1d20 ⇒ 2

So a quick look at our best options.

Intimidate: None of us have the skill.
Perform (oratory): None of us have the skill.
Bluff: Lem has +16
Ranged attack with spear: Ragnar at +16
Melee attack using charisma: Sir Godfrey at +11

Doesn't sound like we are trying to lie to them so let's go with the spear.

Shelf 5 Secrets of Mirrors The carvings depict a man adoring himself in a mirror. These tablets describe the manufacture and use of bronze mirrors. (Perform (any) or Sense Motive): Moved 0% | Catalogued 0% | Studied 0% |

Would that man be human? If yes would my favored enemy bonus apply to the Sense Motive check?

Same question for the woman on shelf 7 and Perception.

Yes, human. No, doesn't apply.

So I realize that we're three weeks into this scenario and so far it has mainly been skill checks for you. Hope you are not feeling too bored. If you are curious to see what you missed by avoiding combat with the scorpion people, take a look at the Classic game that I'm running simultaneously here (there won't be any spoilers - they are behind you). At one point I thought it might be a TPK. They just finally finished the fight but one PC has 18 points of Dex damage and no good way to get it back to full. To add insult to injury, the player whose PC single-handedly precipitated the fight (without even trying all the skill checks) decided that he was too busy to play in the game (just at the moment when his squishy caster was grappled) and dropped out...

Human
Spoiler:
Hp 35/35 AC 17, t10, ff17 F +6, R+3, W +9; Perc 4
Cleric 4

Lem is not a fighter but a lover. He prefers charm to battle!

When I click on any of the slides (to do something like adjust the size of the statue icon that I've just put down, for example) it automatically advances me to the next slide. This is super annoying and the only solution I've found is to move the map slide to the end of the slide sequence. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Don't quite know. I haven't had that issue before.
