Gnoll 1

You hear a giggle like bark as the gnoll on the right takes a few steps down the stairs. As it does it quickly loads the crossbow in his hands and then picks it up and fires it again this time at the half-orc standing in the stairs above him.

5 ft step back. Move action to load crossbow, Action to fire it.

[dice=Lt Xbow Atk]1d20+1
[dice=Lt Xbow Dmg]1d8
[dice=Critical Dmg]1d8

The gnolls bolt pierces Grond's shield and strikes him directly in the lower left hip. The bolt goes deep and the half-orc can feel bone shatter and muscle tear. The wound is bad and the brave warrior is in critical condition! There is nice crossbow bolt size hole in Grond's shield now and a bolt sticking in his left hip!

Shield DR absorbs 3 hp and Grond takes 10 hp of damage. Grond is critically wounded. Has 2hp out of 12hp left.

Grond takes a -3 ATK/AC/Sav/Skill/Abil/Caster Level

Is the DR supposed to be 2 or 3 for the shield?

Antas still has a action. So you could move - being in mind you can only move 3 squares (2 for 1). Or you could act in some other manner. If you wish you can pass through the group in front of you. In this case you and whoever's square you pass through will need to make a DEX check DC14.

The Exchange

Male Human Lt Commander, Chief Engineer

I can't see any tactical advantage to pressing down the stairs even though I want to. I need spider climb or levitate etc to get down there lol Antas will light the lantern he is holding and shine it down the stairs to get a better look

Knowing that his bardic magic will last another two rounds Narciso looks for anyway to help.

Stepping to try and get a view down the stairs. If I can see the gnoll, or any other enemy? down the stairs I'll cast a grease spell to cover where they are. The area is a 10' square so maybe the area behind the gnoll too?

Antas putting his weapon down he grabs his flint and steel and starts to light the lantern. It takes him a few moments to do so and a spark lights the lantern casting additional light down the stairs.

Note=Grond and Naia don't see the Green Token marked S. Neither hear or see anything coming from that token. More specifically - The targets can’t see, hear, smell, feel, or taste you, including with extraordinary or supernatural senses such as blindsense, blindsight, scent, or tremorsense. They can’t pinpoint your location by any means, including detect spells.

Antas finishings ligthing the lantern and points it down the tunnel. He can see the dead gnoll in the dim light laying on the stairwell to his right. The other gnoll is standing in front of semi bald man with dark short hair...he is tall and with hawkish faciel features. Behind him is two more men...they appear more like sailors of sorts but it is hard to tell with the dim lighting.

Lt Crossbow: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 2 - 4 = 0
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Critical Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 2

The bolt shatters at the bottom of the stair step right beneath of Grond...sending shards of the bolt flying every where!

Smuggler 5

The man moves back a few steps, loads his crossbow, and aims it up the stairs at those above the half orc trying to keep them pinned at the top.

Aimming at Naia (person to his side.

Lt Crossbow: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 2 - 4 = 17
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6
Critical Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7

The bolt skips off the edge of her shield and it slices through her shoulder.

The shield absorbs 1 hp of damage - 5 hp of damage taken.

Naia is now grazed!

Soros - Botted

Soros unsure of all of the chaos errupting in front of him looks down the stairs and sees the gnoll standing in from of that man.

He moves back to his corner.

"We have to push down these stairs or we are going to be filled with damn bolts! The longer we stay up here the more likely we are going to die on these stairs!"

He looks at Peran and to Narciso...

"I can't help them stuck here! I can put a magical shield of force up but we are to bunched up on these stairs and I need to cast in right in front of myself."

Group 2 - Rabalar and Grond are still up for Group 2.

Grond was at 2hp. He was healed 3 from the channel, and 2 from LoH so he should be at 7hp now.

I am assuming the token marked 1 on the map is a Gnoll?

Grond stands up with a growl - "Thank you for the healing brothers" - then presses forward along the corridor, and right up to the gnoll's face.

Would attack, but I think Grond can only stand up and move, correct ALLENDM?

@Rab - why are you at -4 in those shots?

@Jack - so Naia can’t see Mr. S as part of his magicks? But she can see the Smugglers (2 and 5)?

Also - I have Naia at Grazed when she is down to 16, but if she takes 5 from the crossbow, and had 22 to start then she is on 17, and not Grazed? Or did she take damage somewhere already and I forgot?

I try to include everything in the line so it is as clear as I can make it. I identified the primary target was #1, with rollover to S if appropriate "@ 1" and "@ 1 or rolling over to S". I listed the modifiers which are applied against the roll, stating cover in the position corresponding to the -4 (provided by the walls and ceiling in the staircase). I even noted that I wasn't including PBS, though I didn't detail it was because of the elevation differences, as if the map was flat, 1 is w/i 30'. I really do try to make it as easy as possible.

Oh, and I did cut'n'paste the roll text and then modify it, but I also cut'n'paste the damage text. That doesn't automatically result in duplicated results. I was just noting the coincidence, much the same as we tend to do with physical dice.

Ach, sorry for not being clearer, I got that you were breaking down the modifiers by type/in line, but *who* has cover? Are you behind cover and thus have a penalty, or do...they have cover. Yours sincerely, Confused.

Well, technically, every single body between me and the target provides some cover. That's why the one trait allowing you to ignore cover when provided by EXACTLY one individual can be so important. But there's 3 allies between me and the closest target. The restrictive angle of the stairwell and reduced visibility through it caused by the landing also provides some cover. The stairwell itself shouldn't provide cover between two people both on it, but the landing "fixes" that. Does that help?

Yep. You have an obstructed view. And some cover against foes downstairs provided by/from the landing. Clear now. As in, I understand. ;)

Hunh. Same D20 roll both times.

Rabalar's first arrow hits the Gnoll's directly in the heart-piercing his ring mail and the gnoll cries out, grabs the shaft of the arrow with his off-hand and starts howl but the creature coughs up blood and drops to his knees and then falls to the stairs dead. This leaves an opening shot for the Wood Olf to his next target and he quickly releases his second arrow. The man sees it coming and dodges just as the arrow flies by his right arm. The arrow must have grazed him as he winces as it flies by!

Two arrows fly over Grond's head...as he stands up and his eyes go to his enemies he sees and hears the gnoll in front of die. An arrow stuck in his heart...the creature falls to your feet and down the corridor, you see two human men, sailors of sorts, holding crossbows and frantically reloading them and shooting at you and your companions!

Correct you can't see, hear, smell or interact with (S) at all. He is simply not there as far as you and Grond are concerned.

So this is what I have for you - 22/17 hp.

For everyone's eyes except Grond and Naia

The man that is standing behind the dead gnoll takes a step back then lifts his hand up and calls out something in a strange tongue...a dark tongue. As he does he seems to glare at the group up the stairs.

Perception check DC15 to figure out who he is directing his gaze at.:

His anger is clearly directed at Ferona and Rabalar! His words sound dark and otherwordly as he finishes.

DM's Eyes Only:

Will Save - Rabaler - Hidden Presence DC15: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Will Save - Ferona - Hidden Presence DC15: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

Rabalar watches as the man lifts the ring and feels an odd sensation wash over him as he does he doesn't recall exactly what he was thinking about a moment ago. He looks down the hall and he sees the two smugglers attempting to reload their crossbows and fire again.

Rabalar you can't see, hear, smell, or interact with the man in any way.

Ferona feels an odd sensation was over her but as she does he mind seems to push back...her willpower and her mind's desire to remain focused overcomes whatever this man tried to do to her.

Ferona sees the man then fall back behind the wall going east.

Waiting on Antas.
Thanks for the correction!

can I reach Naia and is she still wounded and needing attention?

Antas will step to Naia holding the lamp up and lay on hands placing his hand on her shoulder

I think Grond needs the healing more than Naia...

I am under the earlier presumption of the layout of the stairs that I can't pass and get that far down without acrobatics which I don't possess. I suppose I could crawl at reduced speed between your legs to reach him?

I was under the impression I was now with Grond, so I imagine if you can reach me you can reach him? Jack?

The stairs are 2 squares for 1 square. So you move 3 squares. I moved you down those three squares and that puts you right behind Grond. I put you to his right figure you would want to have a clear line of sight.

With the bodies piling up, and his companions adjusted so that he can move through, Rab scoots down the stairs, past the injured half-orc, finding he has a really good line of sight to one more on the landing where it looks like the stairs turn . . ..

But a double move down the stairs is still a full-round action, so I can't do anything about the clear shot.
