Background:

History of Salinmoor, the town of Seaton and the Church of St. Cuthbert
Born in the Town of Seaton in 545CY, Peran, grew up in a town still trying to rebuild after the raider attack of 535CY. His father, Anders, had arrived with the relief force from Burle and after the Battle of Seaton decided to stay on and help with the rebuilding. His mother, Bethany, was the daughter of a wealthy merchant who lost everything, including most of his family. The distraught man left the few items of worth he had left and used them to help found a small chapel to St. Cuthbert. His daughter, Peran’s mother, became a lay sister and helped bring food to the many workers trying to rebuild the town. This is how the two met and fell in love. They had planned to marry at the small chapel in 540CY, but a fierce hurricane swept over the town and destroyed many buildings, the chapel included. The two helped rebuild the town once again. Instead of a simple chapel, a temple was built in honor of St. Cuthbert and his priests. It was at this new temple in 542CY that Anders and Bethany were married.
The couple spent the first few years of their marriage getting settled in the newly rebuilt Seaton. Bethany continued with her work at the Temple, while Anders began to learn the trade of a fisherman. He was also asked to join the local coastguard by the mayor, as he had previous military experience. All was looking good for the couple and the town. Viscount Visby I was slowly rebuilding the Viscounty and trade and settlers were beginning to trickle into the towns and villages. In 542CY the couple were excited to greet their first child, however, the child was born still. The following year Bethany fell pregnant once again, and this time a girl was born. Named Elsbeth, the child was the joy of the couple and again with a year, Bethany was expecting. In 545CY Peran was born. All was idyllic for the little family, but that was not to last.
In 550CY a deadly disease arrived at the still recovering lands of Salinmoor. Known as the Black Miasma, it had reared its head back in 538CY, but this time it struck the Viscounty harder. So many fell ill that the various churches could not keep up with the healing of the sick, and many died as a result. Peran’s mother and older sister were two of these. Working diligently at the Church, Bethany became exposed to the plague early on but did not tell anyone, not wanting to take healing from those she felt were more needing it. By the time the Cuthbertin priests discovered her illness, it was too late. Devastated, Anders became estranged from his children and left them in the care of the church while he spent all his time at sea. It was during the tail end of the plague that both children fell ill. While Peran was spared, his sister was not so lucky. She passed away in 551CY, a year after Bethany’s death. Returning from the sea, Anders took the news of his daughter’s death silently. He turned and left the temple, never to step foot into the holy building again. He took up drinking heavily and ignored his parental duties to his son. In 552CY war once again tore apart the land. Sahuagin attack all along the coast, killing and pillaging many of the towns and villages. At Seaton they were assisted in their assault by the great green wyrm, Sathorexhes. It was only by the sacrifice of the Viscount and many of his men was the town saved from being sacked again. Many lost their lives, including the Viscount and Peran’s father. The orphan was taken in to the church to repay the debt owed his mother for all her years of selfless toil and sacrifice.
The next number of years saw the fortunes of Salinmoor fall even further. Many hurricanes wracked the coastline destroying crops and property. Further plagues swept through the lands, killing and maiming many, and forcing more to leave “these cursed lands”. Ten years ago, the Sahuagin once again swarmed up out of the surf and attacked the Viscounty. Not only this but Viscount Cronin II was lost at sea, and his successor, Hewel II was imminently thrown into conflict. While the war ended in a win for the Viscounty, it was a pyrrhic victory. Most of the infrastructure had collapsed due to fighting and neglect. Few merchants travelled the lands, and most towns struggled to even survive. The temple to St. Cuthbert was a casualty of the 2nd Sahuagin War, and funds could only be raised to replace the once great temple with a small wooden chapel. Many of the staff were re-assigned to other, more prominent temples, until only 4 remained; the Canon of Salinmoor, the Decon of the chapel and two priests, one of which is Peran.
Peran Andersson’s Background
In his early years, Peran was taught by his father the art of fishing the deep waters off Seaton. As young as 5, the boy would accompany his father on these fishing trips, leaving with the tide early in the morning and returning in the afternoon to sell their catch.
After his father’s death, Peran was taken in by the priests of St. Cuthbert in honor of all his parents had done for the church. He was taught at the Church’s school and when he was old enough, he entered into holy orders as a novice. He was ordained as a priest in 568CY by Canon of Salinmoor. He has remained at the Chapel of St. Cuthbert in Seaton until recently, when the Canon and Deacon decided to send him to the town of Saltmarsh to preach the word of St. Cuthbert to the people in an attempt to gather alms to help the chapel survive another year. Known as Brother Peran, Brother Andersson or simply as Peran of Seaton, the young man was outfitted as well as the chapel could, and even some old armor was found to protect him from the hazards of the road. A stout billet was produced and blessed by the Canon to help protect the cleric, as well as a set of vestments and holy tombs to be used to help preach the gospel of St. Cuthbert. The Canon even gave a little money to Peran to help him on his way.
Peran is a young lad of 25 years. In his youth he was afflicted with Black Miasma which left him with scars on his arms and chest. The marks resemble small stings marks, but with a black “head” rather than a red welt. His dark hair is cut short all around, and he usually has several days growth of facial hair covering his jaws. His clothes, while clean, have been mended many times, and are ill fitting. The same can be said about his armor, as it was scaled down from a much larger person to fit him. The young man stands just shy of 6 feet, but is rather thin, due to the lack of supplies the chapel has been able to aquire over the last few years.
