The threat to Varisia, in the form of an army of giants led by a stone giant wizard named Mokmurian, is over. Our heroes slew the evil giant in his lair in the fortress of Jorgenfist. But a greater threat now looms...

Lym's spell strikes Athroxis, disrupting her Fly spell and causing her to float gently to the ground. She raises an eyebrow at the half-orc wizard.

"Quaint." she growls and casts another spell. Lym immediately feels her muscles begin to calcify, her flesh taking on a greyish hue.

Since Rexil went first, he could easily use Thordak as a flank I would guess. Thordak has to go get his weapon though afterward.

Finding his current situation beyond unbelievable, the dwarf finds his fury rising... and rising fast. Lowering Aurora to the ground carefully, the dwarf moves over to his weapon and picks it up... externally appearing quite calm. Turning his attention to the tall woman with a look of resolve, "Hey you ya <blankety blank blank blankety blank blank>! I'm gonna cut yer heart out and yer head off, AND THEN I'M GOIN' TA FEED 'EM TO YA!" the dwarf explodes, preparing to charge in and destroy.

GM Screen:
MI=4; HP 194+13;

Lym manages, with some effort, to fight off the spell cast on her.

Praxim's barrage and Rexil's strike are only effective at reducing Athroxis' mirror images.

Tomaru's spell seems to hit the Lady of Wrath and slow down her preternatural speed.

Thordak lowers Aurora down and takes a step...only to feel an iron grip on his ankle. Looking down, he sees the improbable: Aurora has a hold of his ankle, but her tattooed arm ends in a massive claw. The raging dwarf watches in horror as Aurora's arm begins to split down the center, and a huge form begins to emerge. The split continues, running down her body with a sickening squelch. A impossibly massive form, easily 10' tall and half a ton, begins unfolding itself from the gnome's small form. Last to separate is Aurora's face. The look of love and devotion gives way to the grinning visage of a Glabezu demon.

"Come play with me...my 'love'" it hisses through massive fangs.

Thordak you are Grabbed. Need a STR check or Escape check to get away. OR you could just fight as you are, but you did NOT reach your axe.

ROUND TWO cont'd: the rest of you are up. Athroxis' is next to Lym (and Tomaru I'd guess). Rexil gets an AoO. Thordak is Grabbed. Rexil, Praxim are 20' from her after she moves. Ready, GO.

Staring at the demon with an absolute look of horror for what might seem like an eternity, the dwarf all of the sudden explodes "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!" into laughter. Yes, it absolutely does. I'm sorry I will not remember everyone's buff spells unless they are included somewhere I can see them. I have to go through and re-look at the combat as Praxim's arrows would hit far more times, changing what I would have done.

Provably not. The attack rolls were dismal. He hit Athroxis with 31(44), 35(40), 34(41) and 34(45). Damage in brackets. If any of those hit, the first does 15 points more if she counts as an outsider or undead.

On the demon, he hit: 36(44), 32(42), miss, and 31(44). Again, first hit does 15 more.

I added his buffs in his status line.

No, it changes everything. All of those are hits on her (AC 28) so that's 185 points of damage. The glabrezu is dead. The whole combat changes. So epic combat scene reduced to a two-round wipe.

Retconning everything:

'Praxim activates smite evil and begins unloading arrows.'

Praxim's arrows fly true. One. Two. Three. Four. Each thuds into Athroxis' flesh with a sickening 'chunk'. She looks up at the paladin with hatred, and more than a little fear.

Let's speed things up, shall we?

This room is a lab of some sort, although you can sense that you really may not want to know what type of activity took place here. This long chamber is filled with two rows of wide worktables. The far end of the chamber contains three wide alcoves. The ones to the north and south are each filled with all matter of alchemical supplies and large barrels, while the one in the middle contains a single huge vat of what appears to be twitching, foul-smelling flesh. The lab yields no other information or useful items.

Traveling back to the main room, you pass through the teleport circle into two large connecting rooms.

The polished granite walls of the first large chamber are covered in spidery glyphs. The ceiling rises twenty-five feet high, where a mural depicts a redheaded woman holding a flaming ranseur standing atop a burning tower of stone. Swords and ranseurs rest inside shallow depressions in the walls, glowing faintly to illuminate the chamber. The east side of the room is a solid wall of billowing black smoke.

Kn Arcana DC 20:
The glyphs on the walls represent various forms of evocation magic, particularly those involving fire or the creation of magic weapons.

A quick Detect Magic determines that some of the weapons on the walls are magical, and with a little effort, you can recover 2 +1 greatswords, 2 +1 ranseurs, and 2 +1 longswords.

Cont'd...

The smoking wall is an elaborate Illusory Wall that leads to a grand chamber, clearly for ritualistic combat. A wide avenue flanked by crimson stone pillars runs down the center of this chamber—the ceiling arches sixty feet above and seems to be made of fire. At the center of the room, a huge seven-pointed star made of silver is engraved into the floor and surrounded by a circle of low-burning flames.

The flames of the ceiling are quite real, and getting anywhere near them is not a wise idea. The Sihedron Rune in the center of the room is in fact an immense portal, the very 'master circle' Vraxeris wrote about in his journal.

Kn Arcana DC 30:
Using any teleportation magic while in this portal will open a gate to the lower slopes of Rimeskull - allowing you to escape the Runeforge.

”As eager as I am to be out of here, perhaps we should take a moment to enchant a few more weapons from that pool. Primarily so that if something should happen to our primary weapons in the big fight, we have backups, but also, adding that enchantment costs us nothing but time and if we plan to sell some of these weapons we just found, it makes economic sense, too.”

He frowns. ”Or is that just the effects of the greed place wearing off on me?”

Still looking to Thordak, Tomaru responds to Praxim. "This is the halls of wrath, so, if we don't want to take a break just yet, the lady did have some helpers in the other room. We could go and lay some wrath down on them."

Tomaru releases 3 Channel Energies to heal the group.

Basically what my last two posts are telling you is that you've seen all there is to see in Wrath. Next move is up to you.

As the burns from both fire and ice heal quite well, Thordak nods in thanks. "Much better. Thanks for that, Tomaru. I like this lot. Always healin' me," he says, grinning as he looks off into the distance. After staring at whatever he's staring at for several moments, he returns from... wherever, "Okay! So who do we kill next. I'm ready! Where's the rest o' the bad guys?! There's got ta be more, right?!"

Praxim and Rexil begin to pack up all the loot, making sure they haven’t missed anything in the other places. When they’re finally ready to go, he says, ”I won’t miss this place, where we lost one of our own, but in coming here, we bring a light, a hope that the evil of greed can be defeated. In doing so, perhaps we have redeemed this place to some small degree. Once we leave, we should destroy the means to return. I think, however, we should also prepare for Karzoug to make a swipe at us while in magical transit.”

So what are we doing now?

"This portal is our ticket to get out of this wretched demiplane, still. As soon as we're sure we've wiped out the last Thassilonian remnants creeping around so they can't go to Karzoug's aid, we can finally go home to Castle Lym and plan the next stage of our journey," Lym says, clearly relieved.

Wrath was our last stop.
After going through the complex one last time to make sure there's no one left, we get Aurora's body and leave.

The domed chamber stands as majestic as before, the 200-foot ceiling over the large pool of bubbling prismatic liquid wherein you forged your Dominant weapons. The massive Sihedron rune, each spiky flange pointing at one of the 25-foot statues of a Thassilonian Runelord.

Save one.

The statue of Karzoug lies in pieces strewn about the floor of the chamber where it fell after the Runelord of Greed himself animated it to attack you after the weapon forge ritual. Aurora's body lies in state nearby, peaceful in death as she was vibrant in life.

Confident you have defeated all of the minions of the Runelords that were resident here in the Runeforge, you gather all you have gained - and lost - and teleport yourselves back to the Material Plane. You arrive in the summoning ring of stone heads. The body of the Dragon Aykhryst is in ruins, as the scavengers of the area have already begun their gruesome work.

So it is with joy and sorrow that you return to Castle Lym for a well-deserved rest.

But you know that out there, somewhere, Karzoug awaits. In the fabled city of Xin-Shalast he plots his triumphant return.

Tomaru inscribes his 'kilroy-was-here' rune into the wall like a dutiful Desnan priest who has visited a far off place.
