Nightflier's Midnight Game Thread

Game Master nightflier

Set in the grim world of Aryth, Nightflier's Midnight is a game that speaks of almost futile hope that shines against the darkness.

I'm fairly sure Nightflier took my action for me, unless I've miscounted (which is possible). Thanks for that, by the way, I appreciate it. Anyway, I think I only have the one, which is - burning 2 blaze points to stab mageboy with fire. Once again, DC 15 reflex if I connect.

A manic grin growing on his face in the heat of the battle and flame, Lyj darts and weaves crazily, his dagger flashing in with forge-hot steel once again.

Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
Damage: 1d4 + 5 + 3d6 ⇒ (3) + 5 + (5, 3, 3) = 19
Fire: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11

Oh, bloody hell - for future reference, Lyj has DR 2/cold iron. I totally forgot about that for all the sequences in the caverns. Just noticed while double-checking my attacks.
EDIT, Crit Confirmation: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

From what I've seen, that was two pounds ago and you could not reach them as they were too far away. Then Duncan reviewed all the positions with you midway from the eidolon and the summoner and you did not take any action.

But you already killed the Mage, Nightflier said so when Lyj Alias attacked him:

You could use these rolls to charge the ShroomeDwarf, he is the only one left within your reach. And Gilian is right, you are lagging behind one round. This can be only your attack from the end of the previous round, and your turn this round still didn't come

Ragnar, you also missed that last round, and Duncan is waiting for your action. It would probably be the best if you attacked the Dwarf now, and one more time later this round. Chops and the Dwarf should be about 10-15 feet to the left from your position. So with both Lyj and Ragnar attacking twice, we might kill him this round.

male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2

Honestly, I feel a little lost. Usually I'm pretty good at keeping track of this stuff, but the flow of this fight has been hard to follow. I'm just going to follow directions roll an attack and let you guys sort it out. I'm out of Spell Energy anyway, so at this point I'm just a sub-par fighter :)
So this is for last round then, and I'll take this round's action at the end in the regular order.

Ragnar shuts his eyes tight for a moment. "No." he growls a quick expulsion of breath and looks around as if confused, seeing things no one else do. "But he'll get away!" He snarls in frustration for a moment and glances back his haggard companions. "GrrrrRRRR. FINE!"

A surge of motion brings the big dorn across the skirmish like an avalanche behind his spear point.

1d20 + 7 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 7 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 29 Rage, Flank, Charge, War Cry

1d8 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

It's point bites deep into the infected dwarf as the spirits churning around him reach for it's tainted soul.

If it's still susceptible to fear effects, it has a save to make.

Lyj approaches the dwarf from behind, using Chops' broad shoulders as a cover for his movement and stabs the assassin in the kidneys. Almost at the same time, Ragnar bears down on him with his spear and skewers him completely. Dwarf opens his mouth to scream in pain, but instead of sound only blood pours from them.

Gilian has a single spell point left so she will use her new ability to heal every one around her of 2d6, but every one also means the ennemy, so she's delaying her action for you, Ilona and Sorok to finish killing the assasin so she can do it. Sorry if I was not clear enough before.

Dark Archive

Dwarf is dead. Sorry that I didn't make it clear before. In my defense, I just got back from a wedding. :)

Female Erenlander Spiritual Chaneller 5

Sorry, I can now post.

As the assassin falls down, Gilian rushes at Sorok's side, ready to heal her. Midway, she realizes that most of her companions are injured, and something stirs in her mind. She frowns, trying to recapture the meaning of this alien though. As she concentrates, the green tones of her dark hair intensify and the locks curl on themselves.
Gilian face freezes for a moment and she exhales suddenly. Her hair uncurls violently, throwing away tiny green spores that covers everything and everyone around her. Whenever the spores land on living skin, they burrow immediately, adding their energy to speed up the healing processes, mending the burnt skin and closing wounds.

Heal every one in a 30 feet radius for 2d6 ⇒ (6, 3) = 9HP.

Feeling the strength returning and torn tissue rekniting as the spores enter his body, Duncan realizes that the wounds the dwarf sustained are now much more grievous then his own, and reaching inside himself, Duncan lays a hand on Sorok's shoulder and let the last drop of magic in his body blossom into healing light.

As he heals the dwarf, he heads out onward towards Ilona, with his shield and broken blade ready move 20 feet

"Do we let them escape, or we engage these new lizards right away. Lady Solvistania, if that squat Mushrooman summoned these, how long before they go away?"

Solvistania gives Duncan a wry look, "If these are normal summoned creatures, then they do not tarry long on this plane. I have heard tales though...In any event, we should try to avoid engaging them."

Ragnar looks toward the beasts and grunts, his anger still in his eyes. He glances to his companions injuries, taking note of the least wounded of the warriors, and turns on his heel marching toward the strange lizards. "Chops, Ilona, with me. The rest behind. They will pose no obstacle."

Lizards ain't immune to fear. ;)

Spirits churning around him, Ragnar bears down on the summoned creatures.

How 'bout some lizardy will saves? DC 17 or Frightened. Even if they save they're Shaken.

Pebble:
Long ago you have found a set of large bones deep in the earth. They were nothing like any animal that walks the earth. You've asked your Grandfather about them, and he told you that eons ago, when even he was younger, great lizard-beasts roamed the land. These creatures look a lot like those from Grandfather stories.

They are in fact dinosaurs summoned by the Summon Monster VI spell. And they were meant as a deterrent and a warning not to follow the Summoner. They would have disappeared soon. I think that I've made that clear in the description of their summoning. On the other hand, as a party and as individual characters you are great deal more powerful than normal. You have been breezing through the encounters designed for 10th level characters. Of course, my intention was and is to run the heroic game, so you are more than equipped to deal with those kind of challenges, but some attention to details such as "they do not seem to be attacking unless advanced upon" is required in order to survive :)

It's Ilona's battlecry which lasts 5 rounds after she unleashes it, this would be round 3

Duncan stares for a moment, unbelieving as Ragnar strides towards the giant lizards, provoking them into action.
Before doing anything, Duncan just says out loud: "Pebble, could you please go to the body of the Mage and bring Lady Gilian his staff, and drag his sword to me if you can."
"Lady Gilian, please try to figure out whether you could use anything from the staff to assist us in our current predicament."
"Hugi, Muni, please, take the gems from the eyes of the landshark."

Earth Elemental Familiar 5

Pebble rushes back to pick up both the staff and sword of the mage. The first one, he hands to Solvi and the second to Duncan, while Gilian is busy healing every one.

Solvistania sends a sharp rebuke to her familiar, "NO! No eating now! Make yourself useful and see if there are any other threats ahead of us."

She accepts the staff from Pebbles and offers Duncan a small smile, "I will see if this holds any secrets we can use to assist us here."

Seeing how unfit the sword is for his hand, he waves Pebbles away, and says:"I've broken enough swords. It might be better used in Lyj's hands. Lyj, there is a short sword coming your way. I wish you better luck with it then I had with blades I wielded."

I wanted to use my empty feat slot and take two weapon fighting, but unfortunately I do not have sufficient dex score. So, it's better to give it to Lyj and let him sneak attack away...

The thing is obviously magical and you intuitively know that its powers are tied to earth and stone in some way. You can not determine anything more, since you don't have enough time to apply your full knowledge of spellcraft.

Gilian rushes to Sorok side, applying both hands on the wounds. As time seems to constrict, she reaches for all the energy she can, tearing through her body and mind in the process. As Sorok body fully mends, smaller but similar wounds open Gilian body and drops of blood drip slowly
from her eyes and mouth.

Uses CMW twice on Sorok for 4d8 + 14 ⇒ (6, 4, 5, 7) + 14 = 36. Cost 4sp: 1 from her reserve, 2 from her con and 1 from a fp. If I'm right, Sorok health is now 3+15(first healing)+9(spore healing)+36 (current healing)=63/61 so he is back to full health.

"Urg! By th' mother..." The surly dwarf looks down at himself in shock and up at Gilian with admiration. A heavy hand clasps down on her shoulder for a moment and he nods. "Right. Let's see if we c'n save th' moron."

Starting slow for a couple of steps, then picking up momentum like a rolling boulder, Sorok moves to catch up and interpose himself between the Dorn and the lizard creatures.

Two giant three-horned lizards storm at Sorok, thundering their rage. Both of them lower their heads and slam into a enlarged dwarf.

Both beasts slam into the enlarged shield and bounce back, before shaking their heads and disappearing into clouds of smoke.

As you cautiously advance, you get the feeling that you are entering another world. After a certain time, about as long as the new torch burns before sputtering, you begin to enter a strange realm of fungi, lichen and diffuse light, seemingly emanating from some kind of moss, growing everywhere.

Huge mushrooms are reaching to the cavern ceiling, which is at least 200 feet above the cave floor. Large strange growths, Gilian would say that they look like cancers and tumors, are covering every inch of the stone, not already covered by weird plant growth. That is, every inch except...

Slightly to the right of you, at the wall of the huge cavern there is an oasis of bare stone. It emanates from the passage carved into the cave wall. Large hole is wide enough for Sorok to pass, even in his enlarged state. Surrounded by steadily glowing runes, it almost seems guarded in some way against all-encompassing uncontrolled growth and decay.

As you approach it, you realize that a set of stair leads down, even deeper into the bowels of the earth. Even from the entrance, it is obvious that the stairs are winding down - how far it is impossible to tell...

As they walk along, Duncan is brooding, and at one point he turns back to Ragnar, a bit nervous. Slowly taking out shards of Sorrow, he presents them to Ragnar. "I know that nothing I say can make this up to you, since this is the second sword that broke in my hands, and this time it is death of a companion. I can only present you with what is left of her, somehow hope that you can reforge it. If I had a proper sword of my own, it would be yours, I can not even pledge my sword, what's left of it, to you, since you already have it. I can just hope that you will be able to forgive me. I have nothing more to say, accept that Sorrow's shattering brings me more pain than I have felt in many years."

Female Erenlander Spiritual Chaneller 5

"Solvi, Ilona, do you think it is the way to the nexus? Can you read the runes? If so, let's move down."

Solvistania looks at the runes, trying to decipher their meaning without lagging behind the others. "Gilian, although I cannot sense the Nexus currently, that seems a safe assumption. Plus, it is not as if we have a choice in our destination."

Ragnar takes the remains of his once-great blade and listens with an unreadable expression to Duncan's words. He rolls the shattered hilt over in his hands, the spectral fire from his ghost torches still lighting it with a ruby glow when it is placed in his hands again. He seems about to speak, but then turns his head away, listening. A moment later his eyes raise.

"I am not telling him that. No. Well phrase it differently. Hrmph."

Turning back to Duncan the big dorn smiles ever so slightly. "She says she forgives you."

He looks to the side again, and then back. "But when she comes back you are going to make it up to her."

He looks back to the empty air. "If you don't want me to paraphrase, speak less crudely." He pauses, then continues. "Hush. Go speak with Anvinder. You've never had a body, and when I stick you in one I don't want you tripping all over yourself." His eyes widen, scandalized. "Sorrow, if you ever do that, I will never make a body for you. I don't care. No." He rolls his eyes. "I would imagine that skeletons make terrible kissers. I doubt he'd appreciate it."

Facing Duncan again, Ragnar shrugs. "Swords break. People die. Nothing is ever really lost. Anything can be remade."

As always, you will level up after your first rest. That will happen as soon as you descend down the stairs. Then you can roll again to sense the Nexus.

The runes are Elthedar in origin. Elder fay used that kind of runes for protection from evil, ravages of time and despoilment. They are most surely older than Izrador's fall.

"I'm glad to see that she is not truly gone, but that she has joined your spirits for the time. Tell her that I will make it up to her in some way."

As he turns his eyes fall on Gilian, and for a moment he just stands feeling a bit silly, trying to capture her gaze. Failing to do so, Duncan sighs and peering in the darkness takes point descending the stairs, cautious, expecting some new foe to arise from the gloom.
