Posting this in a few adventure discussion threads that I taking part in.
I been pondering HeroLabs for 2 years already, the high cost has been keeping me away from purchasing, considering PFRPG has a number of add-ons, and the Authoring Kit to create custom game systems for custom games is separate add-on feature at heavy 20 USD.
I been using PC Gen, when I can, yet last few adventures I taken part in all have modified system with plenty house rules that affect character creation and progress, I have been forced to use spreadsheets to manage the characters, as PCGen currently not flexible enough to handle the house rules (though adding items, abilities has been no hassle). Therefore the Authoring Kit probably be needed.
I would like to hear from others in these adventures, if you using HeroLab for these adventures, and how HeroLabs handles the custom house rules.

It is like 150+ USD to have all the Pathfinder Core products plus Bestiaries.
Also I hoping Alex will do his polite introduction of himself to hopefully bring some calm to the situation. Haria most likely upset a few if she speaks too soon.

I have HeroLab and all it's supplements. The editor is pretty good, but I don't spend much time there. Things like adding temporary / permanent adjustments are pretty easily handled...(Additional skills, feats etc.), but different mechanics are more difficult...ie...Heroic Paths etc. Could probably be done, but would have to name it as a custom thing, then make the adjustments by hand.
I wouldn't attempt to play/run pathfinder without HL.

Specifically what problem house rules do you need in PCGen Haria?
There's a yahoo group specifically setup to help users "hack" pcgen to make it do what they want to do for their own games..

I know of the group of people working on the various data files. Chatted with them a few times. Currently not working: characters with multiple casting types or stacking (particular for gesalted characters), levelling with extra feats, abilities, etc specific to custom/modified settings. Not possible to do with data files alone, requires modification on the engine part of PC Gen.

I do have a text file template for the profile page, copy information from the spreadsheet to it.
Probably with the hard way is the ever increasing number of feats, and trying to follow their progress paths is very time consuming process. Really need to automate the process, and show the feat paths and their dependencies only.
@Alex, are you still around?

If you add 1 to the feat remaining box when leveling up it should work fine. Just checked this in v60301.
Gestalt characters will probably never be supported as presented, there is to much work vs requests for them. The closest is what I'll refer to below.
And since Andrew was able to get a classless d20 system working using pure data files (Eclipse: The Codex Persona) I would find it unlikely that what you would want to do wouldn't be possible. :)

@nylanfs, will PCGen ever be truly game system agnostic to be able to support any game system other than d20 based ones? HeroLab seemed to have managed to make their character manager game system agnostic with the use of plugin-scripts and data files.
If it can be made so with plug-in scripts to handle game specific mechanics and presentation, and character validation (always optional, never enforced) using scripts and data files. I attempted to make data files for custom settings, yet always failed due to hard coded mechanics in PCGen.
Also the current data files format is rather outdated considering there are simple formats such as XML and JSON to represent data in a neat easy readable manner. The current format I sure is pushing some data creators away from the project.

Hey guys, this is The Kommandar, Claptrap, Midiotoziggeroto, Alex Armstrong, Moneez here.
First a little bit. I struggle with Bi-Polar depression, i have my entire life and i still have not managed to gain any lasting stability in my 25 years of fighting with it.
Over the last while, more then a month i believe, it has taken a turn for the worst, it has gone downhill tremendiously and chaoticly.
I lost the ability to do many things, including most of the things i enjoy, like pathfinder. I am just simply unable to do them right now. Its too overwhelming.
I also have been wanting to write this a long time ago, but had the same issue. sorry it has taken so long.
Anyways, i do not see me being able to continue playing this for the immediate future so i am going on hiatus for a while, while i focus on my life.
I truly wish that i can come back to this sometime, i was having so much fun with my teleporting Midioto, my crazy robot with a few screws loose and my goblin general. I only hope that when that comes i might be able to rejoin, or create new stories with you guys.
Have fun and i wish the best to you :)

posting this in all 28 of my games (although some of them are dead, i am pretty sure... and others are quite slow so my absence will not be missed overmuch):
There are two hurricanes heading for Hawaii, where I live. One is supposed to land on Friday after being downgraded to a tropical depression, the other is supposed to land Sunday with experts unsure as to how much it'll be downgraded after colliding with the mountains.
I'm sure everything will be fine, so no need to worry. People are freaking out for some reason, but I remain in a state of relative readiness.
I anticipate a loss of internet, at a minimum (they can barely keep it together under optimal conditions). Likely loss of power as well. A time without electricity could last anywhere from four days to four months (with some time around one to two weeks being more realistic).
I'll be on between now and then, but if i just disappear, check the news, hahaha.

I can still post, but if i go silent then you know why
looks like the first storm veered south, so we are just getting rain and wind (55-60mph so not too bad)
it's refreshing so far, considering the heat we have suffered previously.
i think im out of danger for now, until sunday sometime.
