Bear's grins widens, "Easy." And he slams his shoulder once again into the piece of rock, weapon cradled in his back arm.

STR 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22.

Dara Hellhammer wrote:

"Sister, I was born ready!"

Dara slides her waraxe out of its belt-loop just-in-case.

Udaya continues up the stairs to make sure nothing has happened up there either (even though the sounds clearly came from the corridor), she tosses a comment casually over her shoulder. "I was speaking to our delicate boys, Dara. I knew you were ready."

Bear and Dara again heft at the sarcophagus and slide it easily so that it points at the indigo lantern. Once it slots into place, you again hear a rumbling noise, and once again, a circular piece of stone rises from the floor, pushed up by a metal cylinder. The doors slide open as the cylinder comes to rest just under the lantern.

Udaya Udas wrote:

Bear grunts through the exertion of physically moving hundreds (and possibly thousands) of pounds of rock, "Thanks for the consideration."

Ok, maybe i'm being dramatic, but whatever.

"So, what item do we want to try sending through which color door?"

Fredrik furrows his brow in concentration. "I wonder if we should put one of the lanterns in the cylinder. Maybe that is why the red lantern is missing."

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

"Or the lanterns are merely missing because of long ago tomb robbers like ourselves. Perhaps these cylinders lead down to hidden chambers below us?"
Venedictus moves over to check out the new cylinder to confirm that it's empty like the other.

"I guess I meant as a means of finding out if - when we bring the cylinder back - the item is still there and in one piece. You think putting the lantern in the cylinder will yield rewarding results?"

He then nods at Venny's words, "That's kind of what I was thinking."

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

"I would suggest putting something other than a lantern inside. It might be disastrous if it gets broken."

He fishes around in his belt pouch and pulls out a carefully wrapped trail ration. "These things aren't really worth eating, anyway."

Venedictus Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

Venedictus approaches the cylinder and sees that it is not empty. There are numerous crushed bones and moldy clothes on its floor.

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

Yikes! Venedictus pulls his hand away from the cylinder.

"Okay, there's a guy in here. I'm pretty sure he's had it."

He uses his glaive to scrape the bones and clothes out of the cylinder for inspection.

Fredrik approaches the cylinder, and peers inside, "Hmmm. maybe the cylinder crushed whoever was in there before?"

Venedictus wrote:

You hear Bear mutter, "Hey now.. no reason to waste that. That's good eats."

To Freddy's musing, "I'm more likely to believe that those bones were left there as a warning or something... 'stay out'."

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

Venedictus puts the ration back in his pouch. "No reason to waste it though. We should test out that other cylinder somehow, to see if it too is a trap of some kind."

Fredrik Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15

Fredrik notices that the floor of the cylinder is lower than the floor of the corridor, just low enough in fact to nicely fit the cylinder's roof on top of it. He suspects that when the cylinder lowers, the floor does not lower with it.

Venedictus Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Venedictus does not find anything when poking around with his glaive.

Venedictus wrote:

Venedictus turns to Bear, taking the ration back out of his pouch. "Okay, that's also possible. Shall we figure out a way to test this idea?" He cautiously, without entering, looks inside to see if there is some sort of activation mechanism, or if it only descends if you turn the sarcophagus.

Perception check: 1d20+2

There is no noticeable activation mechanism on the interior. The metal walls are smooth, albeit a bit blood-stained.

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

Venedictus attempts a heal check to figure out if these bone fragments may have come from the young girl that went missing 6 years ago.

Heal check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

Edit: okaaaaay then, he checks out the moldy clothes to see if they are young girl clothes...
Profession (fashionista): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Hmmm...The post I replied to seems to have disappeared.

As for the Heal check, he can't determine anything from what remains.

Sorry, I posted it, then saw the post about the floor being low, and figured he wouldn't have said that, given that knowledge, so I deleted it. Now thinking back, I realize that Fredrik hasn't mentioned his observation yet (probably because his player foolishly stepped away from his computer for a moment to attend to real-life nonsense).

Udaya returns from upstairs (assuming nothing bad happened) with the corpse of the big wolf slung over her shoulder. She drops it on the ground, idly noticing the smear of its blood on her shoulder. "Here's a better tester than your rations."

After dropping the corpse, Udaya approaches Bear having caught his comment as she went upstairs. "Sorry, if I offended your honor, Bear. Vene's 'Ladies' comment tweaked Dara's nose so I though I'd return the favor. No insult was intended. You handle that blade well and I'm not questioning your skill or bravery. OK?"

How did you guess? Yeah fredrik would mention that to the others, so at least we have a way to determine if the cylinders are trapped or not.

"Hey check the floor levels, if they are uneven then we know entering the cylinders is a bad idea."

Udaya Udas wrote:

Bear waves away your apology with a smirk, "I am, after all, a delicate and unique snowflake. It's hard not to upset one such as I." He barks a laugh and gives you a surprisingly stiff punch on the shoulder, "You're not so bad yourself. I like a woman who can take a punch... just something so... exciting about it."

He looks down at the wolf-carcass, "Want some help getting fido in his cage?"

"Snowflake?" She looks you up and down, "Iceberg is more like it! What do you eat for breakfast, iron ore?"

Alright, heading to bed now. Please NPC Dara to keep things rolling.

Udaya cracks a big smile, "Oh, I can give them too!" She pops him hard in the shoulder.

Beargle "Bear" Zstellian wrote:

"Yeah, he's ornery. I'm still training him... got him to 'play dead' real good." She grabs one end of the carcass, waiting for Bear to grab the other and help muscle it into the cylinder.

Rubbing his shoulder, Bear grabs his end of Fido and winks at Dara, "Now you're just gonna hurt my feelings. And if I remember correctly, breakfast this morning was some form of poison that looked like a cross between a wet sack and goat vomit." He looks up at you, "It was cheap, though."

Fido lands in the cylinder with a crunch, and (unless anyone wants to try something else out first) Bear and Dara move the Sarcophagus back into alignment to close down Fido's cylinder.

I don't remember which cylinder we're currently using, but it really doesn't matter much, as this is just to experiment with them.

You're currently at the cylinder under the indigo lantern. Just to quickly recap:

The initial position was pointing to the orange lantern (west). There was no cylinder raised up there.
Next was the yellow lantern (northwest). A cylinder rose up there. It descended when you moved the sarcophagus again.
Next was the green lantern (north). That was the direction where the rumbling grew very loud and the floor started to shake.
Then came the blue lantern (northeast). Nothing happened when it pointed there.
It is now pointed east at the indigo lantern. The cylinder here has the crushed bones and appears trapped.
It has not yet pointed to the following directions: southeast to the violet lantern, south to the stairs, and southwest to where the red lantern would presumably be if it weren't missing.

You place the wolf corpse in the cylinder and stand back. A few seconds later (before you can do anything with the sarcophagus), the cylinder's doors slide shut and it descends into the ground. You briefly hear the sounds of cracking and snapping bones, and then there is silence.

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

Venedictus goes as white as a ghost at the sound. "Oh my...I think...excuse me a moment..." He dashes up the stairs, and soon the faint sounds of retching waft down from the chamber above.

"That didn't sound good." Udaya suggests, "Let's push this thing back towards the blue lantern where nothing happened and then back to Indigo to see if the cylinder pops up again so we can retrieve Fido. Come'on, Bear."

AID to Bear's STR1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

Nods and pushes.

STR 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20.
If necessary... STR 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14.

Udaya and Bear push as hard as they can, but the sarcophagus refuses to budge in the other direction. Dara can try to help as well and you give it another go.

Dara Str check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Udaya Str check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

Bear Str Check: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 2 + 2 = 10

Even with the three of you working together, it still won't budge. It would seem this thing only turns clockwise.

"Horse sh!t. I guess we'll continue around that way."

We wanna do the same thing, just going the other way?

If so... STR 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20.

AID to Bear 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 Wow. Clearly Udaya did not eat her Wheaties this morning.

"Guess we'll have to go all the way around again... Well, we did want to know what the other settings will do."

So the plan is to go clockwise around the dial, obviously investigating anything new that happens as we go around, our initial destination being blue. If nothing happens on the way, we'll pause there. Then, we'll try to rush it past green (hoping to survive the quaking), and then go back to whre we lost Fido - checking to see if the wolf's body is still in the cylinder.

If you really want us to make the Str checks, I can continue, but I believe we've proven that we're enough to somewhat reliably move it between the three of us

Good plan. Also, let's put another wolf carcass in the first cylinder we encountered so we can see if that one is (presumably) a 'crusher' as well. On the crush cylinder... I'm wondering if lighting the lantern disarms the trap... something to consider testing if we don't turn up anything interesting before we get all the way back around - or run out of wolves. :)

"A good thought. Freddy, go fetch us another pet while we move this thing around. Also, you think we can use any torch? or only the one that's currently lighting the green alcove?"

Sounds good.

Fredrik gives resigned sigh, knowing he would get his clothes dirty. He runs off to follow Bears instructions.

The green lantern is lit, and yet it was trapped? Tough puzzle, here.

As the three warriors continue to work on the wheel, Bear shoots a questioning look at the departing Fred, "What's up with Willy?"

Udaya shrugs, "Maybe he thought this would be easier."

"Maybe he can have my spot... frankly you two are getting a little ripe." :)

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

Venedictus looks up sheepishly as Fredrik arrives for another wolf. "Oh dear, I guess we should take that one. I think I may have thrown up on this wolf."

Venedictus will help Fredrik carry the cleaner wolf carcass downstairs.

You change back to a clockwise direction and push the sarcophagus so that it's pointing at the violet lantern. (If you take 10 on Strength checks, Bear plus one assistant will be able to successfully push each time. DC is 15.) You wait for a moment, but nothing happens.

With another shove, you move the sarcophagus again. There does not seem to be a slot for the south stairs and it keeps turning easily until it points to the southwest corridor where the red lantern should be. Again, nothing happens.

Finally, with another heave, you push the sarcophagus until it's pointing back at the orange light, where it was when you first arrived. Again, nothing happens.

Beargle "Bear" Zstellian wrote:

Udaya laughs. "Aren't you just a charmer! You don't like my Eau De Wolf Cadaver?" She bats her lashes at him, "I'm wearing it especially for you."

Venedictus - LMAO on the vomited on wolf line. CLASSIC!

You push the sarcophagus so that it again lines up with the yellow lantern. Like before, there is a brief rumbling and then the cylinder rises up and the doors slide open.

Dara Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Udaya Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Venedictus Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Fredrik Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15
Bear Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7

As you lay the wolf carcass inside it, Udaya and Dara observe that the floor of this cylinder is level with the floor of the corridor, unlike the other cylinder under the indigo lantern.

After laying the wolf down, the doors slide shut and the cylinder lowers again. There is a brief rumbling sound again, but you do not hear the sound of snapping bones.

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

Venedictus breathes out the long breath he was holding.

"Okay, then, let's bring it around and see if wolfy is still in one piece."

"Agreed"

Let's push it around, hopefully glossing as quickly over green as possible, but every make a perception roll to see if they can glean any more info from the rumbling when it goes past green. Then we get to where we lost the last wolfie, and see what is inside.

Perception 1d20 ⇒ 20.

Why, oh why did I not memorize prestidigitation?

Fredrik speaks up, "I think the wolf won't be there, it is like an elevator of sorts and it goes down, I'll bet. If the floor is not level, then it is a good bet it is a trapped column."

Bluff 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

Sense Motive DC 22

Spoiler:
He is a little peeved he got his clothes dirty, and...GOTCHA Udaya, he he

You push again and move the sarcophagus to point at the green lantern. Instantly, the cacophonous scraping sound bellows throughout the chamber and the floor starts to shake. You scramble to move the sarcophagus again.

As you are rushed, taking 10 won't work, so...

Dara Str: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Udaya Str: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Bear Str: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 2 = 14

Dara Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Udaya Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Venedictus Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Fredrik Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (16) + 0 = 16
Bear Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (11) + 0 = 11

The sarcophagus remains stuck for a moment. Udaya can notice a buckling at the end of the green corridor. Before you can make another attempt to move the sarcophagus, the floor under the green lantern collapses with a deafening roar. Then there is silence.

Mage armour spells will be running out soon. You have maybe a couple minutes left.

Dara Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Udaya Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Venedictus Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Fredrik Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (2) + 0 = 2
Bear Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5

Suddenly, Dara, Udaya, and Venedictus can hear something coming from the newly opened hole. It's like the skittering of tiny insects. The skittering of lots and lots of insects.

You have 2 rounds of actions in which to prepare.
