Magical?

No, not magical.

Why yes I am. Thanks for noticing. *wink*

After looking at the lantern and the walls with the multiple colors including indigo, Udaya suggests hesitantly, "Maybe, after we search the rest of this area, we should light this thing up in here and see if the light reveals or triggers anything."

Bear takes a look around the room, "Is there anything else to search?"

Udaya hitches a thumb behind her, "I'd like to give the walls in that Northern alcove a good look-see before we go gettin' creative."

Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

"I was thinkin' maybe we'd need to check that other room that had a cave-in... seein' as how this cave-in tried to hide a room from us and all."

Surely there is more for us to kill in here, no? :)

Totally forgot about the cave-in room! Hell yeaaaaaaaahh, let's check it out!

Setting my Udaya-gun to "kill". BooooweeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEE!

Fredrik returns her wink, and says, Now, that's good thinkin' there! Let's check out the cave in room, and then we can experiment with the lantern. And if nothing happens, then you can use it for your hope chest, he he."

You return to the area of the other cave-in and look around.

Dara Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 (+12 for stone-related things)
Udaya Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Venedictus Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Fredrik Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19
Bear Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (12) + 0 = 12

The collapsed rubble blocks this area from floor to ceiling. It looks like it would take weeks to tunnel through the densely packed debris.

The only area you haven't investigated now is the spiderwebs with the glowing green light behind them (just thought I'd remind you of them in case you'd forgotten). Of course, you're welcome to recheck other areas if you feel you might have missed something, even take 20 on searches if you'd like. It will just take added time, which those with mage armour spells might not want to spare.

Wait... where are the spider-webs? I'm so confused. Intelligence of 14 my @$$

I thought I had suggested going towards them earlier. i wanna kill me some irradiated spiders!

Beargle "Bear" Zstellian wrote:

The Udaya-gun has several settings higher than "Kill". They are, in order:

"Kill"
"Kill with Extreme Prejudice"
"Kill Like There Is No Tomorrow"
"This Is More Than a Flesh Wound"
"Deep Fat Fry"

Based on the reaction, it looks like one or more of you missed the bit about the webs. Here's the relevant bit from when you first entered the northernmost area:

Navior wrote:
Across the chamber to the north yawns a twenty-foot-wide open arch draped from top to bottom in translucent cobwebs. An eerie green light flickers from beyond the webs, casting strange shadows about this room.

I'll assume you head back to check it out. :)

Dara Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Udaya Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Venedictus Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Fredrik Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4
Bear Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (12) + 0 = 12

The cobwebs completely cover the archway. Once you get within 5 feet, however, they are transparent enough to just make out a short flight of stairs descending beyond the arch. Hundreds of tiny spiders crawl about the webs. It shouldn't be difficult to cut through or burn the webs.

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

Venedictus begins slashing at the webs with his glaive, looking in disgust at the sticky stuff that masses upon the blade.

Beargle "Bear" Zstellian wrote:

The spiderwebs with the glowing green light is at the north wall of the cairn. That should be our next destination.

EDIT Ninja'd

The spiders scurry out of the way as Venedictus’s glaive slices through the webs. Most of them scurry to the edges of the arch and up the walls, but a few end up on the blade of his glaive and a few others end up on the floor. Venedictus is easily able to make an opening large enough for people to pass through; however, the blade of his glaive is now thoroughly coated in sticky webs. He’s fairly certain it won’t impact the weapon’s performance, but it’s likely to be messy to clean up.

Beyond the arch, a wide stairway descends into an immense chamber. Seven tunnels branch from the room in all directions, extending some thirty feet before ending in rounded walls. At the terminus of each passage, a thick chain dangles from an unseen high ceiling. Five of the chains bear colourful lanterns, just like the indigo one you found, but two hold nothing at all. Opposite the entry stairs, a bright green lantern hangs, the source of the green light you’ve been seeing for some time. It looks like someone has shoved a lit torch into it. The end of the torch sticks out the top of the lantern. Countless chips of glass and shiny metal inset into the chamber’s domed ceiling reflect this light, giving the impression of starlight and falling snow, and casting the whole chamber in an eerie, murky light. The dome starts about ten feet off the ground and reaches an apex about thirty feet over the centre of the room.

Below the dome’s peak, a long dais holds what appears to be a marble sarcophagus. A milky white bas-relief figure, perhaps of a human, rests passively upon the sarcophagus lid. The base of the sarcophagus is shaped like an arrow, with the arrowhead pointing towards the western tunnel, the one with an orange lantern at the end of it.

Unlike the rest of the cairn, this room is completely silent.

Dara Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 (+29 for stone-related things) Wow, she's been getting some good Perception rolls!
Udaya Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Venedictus Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Fredrik Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17
Bear Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6

NEW MAP added to the site. I've used a letter at the end of each hallway to indicate the colour of the lantern. You can also easily see which two hallways are missing a lantern. Note the various areas of dim light. Everyone can see the whole room because of the way the light is reflected, but large portions of the room are in shadowy light.

I'm going to go out on a limb and ask: does this room look like the frescoes?

Venedictus wrote:

Why, yes. Yes, it does.

The only differences between the hallways here and the hallways in the fresco are the missing lanterns and the fact that all the lanterns in the fresco are lit. Going in a clockwise direction, the colours line up, as well. Assuming the missing lanterns should be the same as in the fresco, then the eastern hallway should have an indigo lantern, and the southwestern hallway should have a red lantern.

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

Venedictus walks over and hangs the indigo lantern from the chain in the proper alcove.

Then he uses the remains of the backpack to wipe off his glaive blade.

Fredrik watches Venedictus hang up the indigo lantern without comment, I hope the ladies are not upset about losing a source of loot, he he. "Ok, so now all we need to do is find the red lantern."

"Yeah? And then what happens - we light'em up? And what do you suppose happens after that?"

The chain at the end of the eastern passage ends in a simple hook that easily attaches to the top of the lantern. Venedictus is able to reach up on his tiptoes, grab the chain and hook the lantern onto the end of it.

Venedictus Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

"Well...<huff>...maybe great...<huff or puff>...riches will fall out of...<huff AND puff>...the ceiling. Urrrrrrrrrgh! Ahhhhhh!" Venedictus wipes sweat from his brow and looks up at the hanging lantern. "There we go!"

"...Or maybe a Gateway to Hell will open. So let's not be in too much of a hurry to light the candles and see what happens."

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

"Just look at how beautiful it is with just the green lantern lit. Imagine how beautiful this room might look with all the lanterns lit. Nothing that beautiful could ever open a Gateway to Hell."

He pauses to consider the lit lantern for a moment.

"Um...isn't this perhaps a small problem. I know those webs back there mean that nobody could have gotten down here from the main entrance we used, but torches don't tend to stay lit for hundreds of years, so somebody must be down here with us."

"Or that isn't a normal torch." Udaya walks over and puts her hand close to the flame to see if it is putting out heat. She also looks for smoke or signs that the torch is actually singed.

wait for it... Anything magical?

Bear once again speaks the words to reveal the matrices of arcane energies around him. casts Detect Magic in a sweep throughout the room.

"One ping only."

Udaya Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Udaya feels no heat coming from the torch. She can also see no sign of any scorch marks on the lantern.

One thing Venedictus would have noticed (and I forgot to mention) is that the ceiling of the hall leading up to the torch is about 10 feet high, but this extends to about 40 feet high at the end of the tunnel over where the indigo lantern is now hanging.

Bear needs to move around a bit in order to check the entire chamber and the hallways (due to the limits of range), but after several rounds, he is able to determine that the torch sticking out of the green lantern is magical. There are no other magical effects in the room (apart from party light spells and mage armour).

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21 He is able to determine that the magic is an evocation effect.

Udaya Udas wrote:

Fredrik sidles over to Udaya and whispers softly, "Actually they are lanterns, not candles. Easy mistake to make, he he."

I believe the question for the DM is will he allow anti-paladins in the game, he he.

"It probably is a continual flame torch, Venedictus, so whoever put it here must be long dead by now."

Navior wrote:

CORRECTION: There is one other magical effect in the room (don't know what I was thinking, sorry). There is also magic emanating from the sarcophagus.

Knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

Bear is uncertain what the school of magic is.

Fredrik is able to determine that there is an evocation effect coming from the sarcophagus.

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10 He cannot determine the specific effect, though.

When you take a closer look at the sarcophagus, you can see that the lid bears a white stone relief of a tall figure cloaked in a simple garment of flowing cloth. It’s difficult to say why, exactly, but the outfit conjures thoughts of ancient times. The figure at first looks human, but a cursory examination reveals that it is about 7 feet tall, completely hairless, and of indeterminate sex. Its arms and hands rest at its side. The left hand curls upon itself in a fist, but the right hand is placed palm up, with the thumb turned in and all but the index finger held parallel to the arm. The index finger has been broken off.

The figure wears a scarab-like amulet around its neck, inscribed with a glyph much like the one on the arcane apparatus, but not identical.

I have placed a picture of the sarcophagus on the website.

Dara Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Udaya Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Venedictus Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Fredrik Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (10) + 0 = 10

Udaya looks at him levelly and responds quietly, "Slick, if you are trying to bed me - you are going about it entirely the wrong way. If you are trying to get on my bad side - you are making serious progress. I'd suggest you back off... poking this particular tiger will get you way more trouble than you bargained for."

Bear sadly shakes his head while looking at the sarcophagus. "Why couldn't this be simply a treasure chest?"

"I would not dare dream about bedding you*, I was just making a joke. Seeing as how we are depending on each other for our lives, now. I was trying to build a sense of cameradrie between us."

Spoiler:
Although he does find her attractive, he is still rather shy, and unsure how to say so.

"Ahh, but where is the fun in that?" He looks closer at the sarcophagus. "Dara, my dear, maybe you can see if this has any traps on it, I did detect a magical aura, so do be careful."

Udaya's interest is drawn to the Sarcophagus by Bear's shaking his head and muttering. She extends her supernatural senses to examine the sarcophagus and then the room in general...

I edited the upper post a bit so she could respond to Slick... now that she OWNS his ass. :)

It seems to be a trend, he he. Edited response above as well.

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

"Uh, can either of you ladies, when you're finished torturing 'Slick' there, come over here for a moment? The ceiling above this lantern is much higher than the other areas, and I can't tell if there's anything there to see."

"Keep your panties on, Brother!" Udaya walks over and stares into the darkness above.

Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

If there is something of serious interest, Udaya 'goes loud' by invoking the following power on her armor...

Daylight 1/day
RANGE: Touch
DURATION: 10 minutes/level
EFFECT: Object touched sheds bright light (equivalent to daylight) out to 60'. 60'- 120' = light increases one step (darkness become dim, etc.)

The ceiling is rounded slightly. Udaya can see the point where the chain holding the indigo lantern is bolted to the ceiling. Other than that, there doesn't appear to be anything to see.

Udaya describes what she sees to Venedictus.

Fredrik points out the broken finger on the statue to Dara, "What do you think could have broken the finger off, and why?"
