"Damn."

Udaya starts instinctively backing slowly towards the stairs, "That sounds like bugs. Does anyone have oil? That sounds like an awful lot of company."

Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

"Damn. Damn! DAMN!" Bear wracks his brain for a second, free hand flexing and unflexing unconsciously. He looks up at Udaya, "I have no way of dealing with such an opponent save a spell that makes me run much, much faster... that doesn't do you all much good, though, I'm afraid. Any thoughts?"

Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22.

Excellent waste of a 20!

The big man's eyes light up suddenly, "Anyone have anything to cover the hole?"

Yep, that's about all I got.

Navior, how many actions would it take for me to toss my cloak in a circle around the open hole then light it afire with my flint/steel? Maybe 2 rounds? I figure it might at least buy us some time.

"Maybe these buggers are harmless but I don't want to take that risk and I don't have any oil to use on them. I say we back up the stairs and prepare to run... unless we've got some way to cook'em. Slick, what kind of tricks do you have up your sleeve?"

What a horrible oversight on our part! Geez. This is like dungeon-prep 101!

Note to self... pick up an area spell or two.

Fredrik gets a panicked look in his eyes, "I really don't think they are harmless, Udaya, I do have a spell that targets a specific area, and it should incapacitate the bugs, assuming they are not blind or anything like that"

Initiative 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Unfortunately, the hole is too big for your cloak to cover (about 7 feet diameter). It would just fall straight through.

Initiative 1d20+3

If he's thinking of color spray, he would know that it's a mind-affecting spell and bugs are mindless creatures and thus unaffected by it.

"Runnin's lookin' pretty good right now. We can come back more prepared."

"Let's get to the top of the stairs. We can watch from there and see what happens."

If it comes down to it, can I at least make an impromptu torch by wrapping my cloak around my sword and lighting that?

Bear nods at Udaya's inspired words and makes for the top of the stairs... moving surprisingly quickly for a man his size.

"Agreed"

Actually, I have a whole spare set of clothes in my backpack, can I distribute that to the melee combatants in the group and us all have torches for melee weapons?

So the plan is prepare torches and retreat to the top of the stairs unless Vene has a trick up his sleeve. Ready... Break!

Argh, I'm having a terrible time posting to the boards today. The postmonster keeps eating my posts!

You beat a hasty retreat back to the top of the stairs, and Bear begins pulling out clothes from his backpack. You can hear the skittering behind you, but you seem to have bought yourself some time as the bugs spread out over the lower chamber in search of food.

You have no oil to help light the clothes with, but Fredrik does have a tindertwig. Using that, you are able to set them alight just as a swarm of beetles appears at the bottom of the stairs. You toss the burning clothes down the stairs.

Fire damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6 x1.5 (swarm vulnerability) = 9 points of damage.

There is a series of loud squeaks and pops as many of the beetles burn and the few remaining scatter into the darkness.

They had exactly 9 hp. Hooray for lucky damage rolls!

"Damn... those were my good clothes."

Udaya laughs, "I'll buy you some new ones. They gave their life for a very good cause. Well, shall we see if that hole leads anywhere... before we continue with our experiments? I suspect Fido is a flapjack in the cylinder and won't mind waiting a bit."

"I agree, Udaya, ladies...err...you can lead the way."

Dara Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Udaya Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Venedictus Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Fredrik Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7
Bear Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (14) + 0 = 14

Your respite is unfortunately brief. Dara hears a scraping noise from below and soon after, the rest of you hear it as well when a strange creature appears at the bottom of the stairs. It looks like nothing more than a bunch of clawed tentacles sticking out from a central eye. The thing looks like it shouldn’t even be able to stand up, let alone move, but move it can, and with incredible agility.

For those who already rolled initiative, I’ll use the numbers you rolled:
Dara Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Udaya Initiative: 7
Venedictus Initiative: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (2) + 0 = 2
Fredrik Initiative: 11
Bear Initiative: 22
Mad Slasher Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23

Bear and Dara roll-off:
Dara Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Bear Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Order: Mad Slasher, Bear, Dara, Fredrik, Udaya, Venedictus

I need to do a little bit of work on the map as the adventure maps annoyingly separate the bottom of the stairs from the top even though it's a continuous section. I will update the map soon and we will continue.

Is Mage Armor still up? and for how long?

If Michael's previous figure holds... you should have between 6 and 8 rounds left... approximately.

Beargle "Bear" Zstellian wrote:

Mage armour is indeed still up, but for less than a minute. You have 8 rounds remaining as of round 1 of this battle. Unless this becomes a really long battle, it should last till the end.

Okay, I've fiddled with the map and have just altered the vision blockers so you can "see through the wall" into the blank space beyond the edge of the map. That can double as the corridor leading into the lantern chamber. I'll worry about any additional map work if you decide to return to the lantern chamber during the battle.

MAP CAIRN1 UPDATED Note: It's cairn1, not cairn2, that has been updated.

ROUND ONE

The bizarre creature glides up the stairs, its tentacles whipping around it in circles. It almost appears to roll up the stairs. As it reaches the top, the claws at the end of one of its tentacles slashes at Udaya.

Slasher attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

The sharp claw slides ever so close to her neck, but does not get her.

Up Next: Bear, Dara, Fred, Udaya, Venedictus.

Navior, is this beastie EEEEvil? I'm going to be offline for awhile and I want to post my action so it doesn't slow down the action. I intend to Smite regardless... just need to know whether I should post my normal combat numbers of the Smite numbers for ease of record-keeping. In either case, the Smite will be gone.

Yes, this creature is evil, so you can successfully use your smite against it. It is not an outsider or undead though so you don't get the double bonus on your first successful attack.

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

Eeeek, I take my daughter to the beach for a few hours and come back to find you guys have totaled the place and unleashed who knows what!?

Venedictus, still recovering from the horrific images in his mind of the entire party being swarmed by beetles, practically leaps to a position behind Udaya. He touches her briefly, instilling a bit of Shelyn's luck in the paladin.

Udaya, until the beginning of Venedictus' next turn, any time you roll a d20, you can roll twice and take the better result.

Fredrik looks at the tentacled thing, and resists an urge to rush out of the cairn like a whimpering coward. Summoning reserves of courage he did not know he had, he reaches into his spell pouch, and pulls some colored sand out, and says, "I am going to try to blind it, please stand away, or the beams will affect you as well!"

Ready action to cast Color Spray at it.

Round 1

Any information I can glean using my arcanery knowledge? Knowledge (Arcana) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10.

Bear takes a step, working his way to flanking. 5' step "up". Infusing his blade once again with arcane might, he takes a swipe at the crazy critter. Arcane Strike > Attack 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14; damage 2d4 + 7 ⇒ (4, 2) + 7 = 13.

Thanks! I'll post my SMITE figures then... Feel free to NPC me using the numbers shown for any subsequent rounds.
Note: Her AC is 19 in Smite-mode.

Round 1

Udaya charges herself with holy energy to destroy the corrupt, Swift Action - SMITE and strikes a blow in Sarenrae's name, driving her scimitar at the eye of the foul beast.

Standard Action - Single Hit - SMITE (scimitar crit: 18+/x2):
To Hit: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Confirm Critical (scimitar):
To Hit: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Bonus Damage: +1d6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Total DAM: 14

Thanks, Naz! Udaya will be happy to use Shelyn's blessing in Round 2.

Unfortunately, Bear is completely unfamiliar with this creature.

Bear takes a step forward and swings his blade at the creature. He almost gets it, but one of its swinging tentacles whips around and knocks the blade aside.

Dara said to NPC her, so I will do so...

Dara takes a step up as well, so that she is now flanking with Bear.

Waraxe power attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 2 = 13

She, too, comes close but not close enough. The creature knocks aside her blade with one of its tentacles.

Fred then calls out and readies his spell.

Udaya calls out to Sarenrae and it's like Sarenrae answers. Her scimitar slices deeply into the side of the creature's central eye. It emits an unearthly shriek of pain. She then steps back 5 feet to make way for Fred's spell.

Venedictus touches her, and she feels a surge of luck spread through her.

ROUND 2

The creature moves forward into the spot that Udaya just vacated. It begins to spin wildly, almost becoming a blur. Its tentacles lash out at Udaya, Venedictus, Bear, and Dara.

Slasher attack on Udaya: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Slasher attack on Venedictus: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Slasher attack on Bear: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Slasher attack on Dara: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Damage to Udaya: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Damage to Venedictus: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Damage to Dara: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

It's tentacles lash into Udaya, Venedictus, and Dara, but just miss Bear. They scrape nastily across the skin. Udaya, in particular, is looking hurt as she still has injuries from earlier.

Up next: Bear, Dara, Fred (to be adjusted based on readied action), Udaya, Venedictus.

MAP CAIRN1 UPDATED

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

Venedictus will step behind Udaya.

Scenerio 1: Creature is looking really hurt. He attacks with glaive.
Glaive Attack: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (2) - 2 = 0
Glaive Damage: 1d10 - 2 ⇒ (2) - 2 = 0
Scenerio 2: Creature still looks fairly uninjured. Bit of luck again to Udaya. If he judges that the creature has some reach with those tentacles, he'll spell-like ability defensively, otherwise normal.
Concentration: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Edit: Wow! Those glaive rolls are sad. Very sad.

Attack then move out of range of spell... Sorry for the brevity. Just didn't want to hold things up

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8;

Bear's attack is too high, and the creature easily ducks beneath it. He backs away 5 feet.

Dara then attacks with her waraxe.

Waraxe: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

This time, when the creature tries to knock her weapon aside, the blade of the axe instead cuts into the tentacle. The creature emits another shriek. Its constant spinning is sending drops of blood spraying about.

Dara backs away 5 feet down the stairs.

With Dara out of the way, Fredrik is able to unleash his spell. He takes a 5-foot step to slightly reposition himself. Then a cone of vivid, clashing colours sprays out from his outstretched hand, enveloping the bizarre horror.

Slasher Will save vs. DC 17: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

The creature stops spinning and its central eye flops to the ground, its tentacles falling about it.

Duration: 1d4 ⇒ 1

It is blinded and stunned for a round, and then it will be stunned for another round after that.

Male Human Cleric 1/Bard 1

Scrap those other posts. Coup de grace time!

Grumble, I suppose I should take that first d10 roll. Here's another.
1d10 - 2 ⇒ (5) - 2 = 3
1d10 - 2 ⇒ (9) - 2 = 7

Wow. 10pts+1 non-lethal with a critical hit. No idea how the 1 non-lethal figures in, or does he roll the 3d10 and then apply the -6 after it's been totaled?

As Udaya has said to NPC her, I will do so as well...

Udaya takes advantage of the creature’s condition. Calling out to Sarenrae once more, she swings her scimitar down at it.

Scimitar smite: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Scimitar alternative roll: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Her hold on the sword wavers momentarily, but the luck of Shelyn combines with the power of Sarenrae and guides her clumsy blow to just the right place. Her scimitar cuts deep into its eye, and its twitching stops.

Stunned creatures are flat-footed, lose their Dex bonus to AC, and take a Dex penalty, but they are not considered helpless. They're not paralyzed or held, so coup de grace doesn't work on them. However, since the creature went down to Udaya's blow, Venedictos can then use coup de grace on it.

Venedictus's glaive slices into the creature, severing some of its tentacles.

Slasher Fort Save against DC 20: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13

The creature expires.

Once he's sure that the creature is dead, he'll gather everybody within 30' of him and channel some energy.

Channel #1: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Channel #2: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Channel #3: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Any more needed, he has 7 left so speak now.

Right, sorry, I don't know what I was thinking there. Well, obviously that you could coup de grace stunned creatures....duh!!!!
Since it's come up though, and it's been a long time since I've played a character with a strength penalty...what does happen on a critical...3d10-6 or 1d10-2 three times? Should it have been 10 lethal and 1 non, or 16-6 for just 10 lethal?

What you do is tally up the totals and go from there, it is all lethal damage, though, only if the total amount is negative would it be considered non lethal damage.

Flash is correct.

And before I forget again: 400 XP each. This covers the traps below, as well as the beetle swarm and the mad slasher.

Yes, the Medium track.

Fredrik swallows hard after the tentacled creature is put down by the others. Is this what it is like adventuring? I am not sure this was such a good idea after all." He fights a rising gorge in his throat, but swallows it down. He turns to the others, and says, in a more subdued voice "Should we check out the hole where these abominations came from?"

Udaya pats the cleric on the back, "Nice work, Brother. Thank you for sharing Shelyn's blessing with me... and for the healing. You're a handy fellow to have around."
