Uuummm ... I don't mean to be the party pooper here ... and I realize the swarm technically occupies a 10 x 10 area, but since they are swarming all over Goruck, would the swarm, being technically on his body, not actually be considered to move with him? Because other wise, why not simply run out of a swarm that's attacking you? And if that's the case, didn't he just bring them through the illusory fire so they might get a chance to realize it's not real?

And yes, other than Kairon's burning hands - which as someone (Chillel I think?) pointed out, is going to affect Kairon as well, - we have no spells to get rid of them. I'm thinking someone could grab a torch and start waving it around at the swarm to scare them off maybe? But our magical light efficient party was not currently using any torches either ... :(

Sure, they both sound really interesting.

It was me who pointed out Goruck may get roasted. A bit.

The only person who could try to drive off the swarm with a torch at present is Chillel. Who is rather worried about mother spider. Alternatively, I could start basting Goruck.

Not all of them are "on" him, and I'm not aware of any rules for swarms splitting. Also, though they've been described as "on" Goruck, mechanically they are just sharing his space, and he can still move out of that space, leaving them behind. For flavor reasons, he should probably shake and smack his limbs and torso as he moves away. If the illusory fire is as effective as Mended suggested it would be, that should be all he needs to do.

All of this. I know "realistically" moving "out" of a swarm doesn't make a crapton of sense, but mechanically they are not "on" him, they are sharing his space. So from a flavor and narrative perspective they are "on" him, but from the actual mechanical point of view, they are just sharing his space, and he is perfectly within his rights to just leave that space, and leave them behind. This is just another one of those situations where we have to realize we're playing a game, and the rules aren't always made to mimic real physics. :) Also, as Illiam said, for my money, illusory fire, is going to be real enough in looks, that the baby spiders will be jumping off of his body in order to not go through it, and the few spiders that remain on his person can be "squashed" once Goruck is away from the swarm. I'm just sorry that Goruck's kinetic stone missed, and that Kairon's weak body coudn't break out of the webbing. :P Since Dolok is upstairs and can't really do anything anyway, I'm going to just assume he delayed his action. If you want to have him act, please just go ahead and post whenever, and we'll assume that's when he decided to act.

If I may suggest, a Google document where anyone of us can edit to keep records of the loot? And putting a link to said document at the top of the page here, Mended?

I took the liberty of starting one here:

CRAP SHIT! My TV has quit working! Last night I was playing Elder Scrolls, when the screen just started blinking. It did that about 5 or 6 times and then the picture just went black. The sound is still on, and the power as well of course, but the screen is black. I tried turning it off and back on multiple time, to no avail! I even left it off all night and then tried again this morning and it still does the same thing. When I turn it back on the screen actually comes on fine, but after about 1-2 seconds it blacks out for a second, then comes back into view, then blacks out again and stays black! This means my PS4 has currently become a $400 paper weight! Any one have any ideas? I currently have NO money for a repairman/technician!

Well, technically I do have some 'light' gaming stuff on my lap-top ... but right now it's just basically the silly games on facebook ... DEFINITELY nothing like Elder Scrolls! - But yeah, here I have a whole Saturday free, and I'm going stir crazy! But I realize that there is nothing I can do about it, so what's the point in getting upset? I wish I could react that way about my idiot customers at work! But stupidity makes me upset.

If he knew I'm not going to have the full rent payment he would probably hold off on replacing the TV, so I'm just not saying anything about that ...

Funny thing ... Playing Elder Scrolls, at first I couldn't find any way to view a 'world map', but I thought I'm making decent progress here. Now, how do you know if your making decent progress if you don't know the overall size of something or what the high end of levels are? Silly me! Then I finally traveled off the island on to the continent, and got a view of just the map of that area ... I am level 20-something and I have not even begun to scratch the surface area of this world!!! It is HUGE!!!! I have enough area to play for at least a year or more!!! WOW!!! And they sell this game for only $30? Good value! Course, then you have to sign up for the PSO plus but that's something like $30 for 3 months I think it was? So still nota bad deal considering most of thee popular games are around $60. I know I bought Lego Star Wars Force awakens for about $60 and I finished 97% of it in about ... 3 weeks? Fun game, but I feel cheated money-wise. And that 3% of items I can't find? I can't find any walk-through on the internet that tells me where to find those items either!

I feel compelled to make a shameful admission: for about a year and a half, I was an avid Candy Crush-er. Fortunately, a friend pointed me toward the Risk app, and it is the only game app on my phone now. I conquer the world at least three times every two days.

Hmmm ... Risk! I wonder if there's one for the computer? Or if my old copy of Sid Meyer's Civilization 4 would work on my new laptop? - Oh crap! No, I can't install Civilization, because I dropped the laptop and now the CD/DVD drive doesn't work anymore! Rats!

I'll have to run a search to see if I can find a Risk for my laptop, but it has to be free!

Of course, today wasn't so bad after all. I spent quite a bit of time on Firefly/Serenity websites, which led to Jewel Saite/Morena Baccarin/Summer Glau sites ... and of course some time 'in my bunk'!

WARNING! If you don't know about Serenity/Firefly ... look them up and WATCH them! FIND THEM, WATCH THEM, MUST YOU! But whatever you do ... don't come on here telling me you don't know what they are! Yes, you can get a computer version of Risk. Be warned though that with a computer taking care of all the math and dice rolling, while a tabletop game of Risk can, in some cases, take all day to complete, the game goes much faster. I've won games in less than 30 seconds (though some versions have annoying animations that make it impossible to play this quickly).

The version of Risk I have on the phone is one that has animations for the combat dice rolls I haven't been able to circumvent. It has the classic world map, of course, but you can unlock maps for the French Revolution, Iceland, the Arctic ice cap (ha!), and several others. My current preferred map is called World Conquest -- it adds New Zealand and the Phillipines to Australia to become Oceania (continent value of 4, rather than 2, armies), Svalbard is added to Europe, Hawaii is added to North America, and the Falkland Islands are added to South America (continent value of 3, now). It opens up more "sea lanes" for attack, making it tougher to hold most of the continents, and, thereby, a more rewarding game. It's too bad the "AI" is so poor, though; and I don't get enough reliable service in my area to bother with the online play. Still, a rewarding diversion.

And as for Firefly: no matter what anyone says about where Whedon got his source material, the story of Malcolm Reynolds and his crew will always be one of my favorites.

Uuuummm ... I guess so? I never did anything with it.

**************************************************

Well, that landlord of mine ... he sent me a text this morning sying he realized this past Friday was payday for me, so he asked if I had the rent money available (Even though it's not due 'til Friday) saying that would help towards his buying/replacing the TV. So I had togo ahead and tell him that due to having to pay my car insurance this last month I only have $275 right now, and I would have the other $100 on 4/12 (One week past due). I fully expected a mad tantrum to ensue ...

Instead he tells me that's fine and that if I can get him the money today he will go get a TV today and he ask me if I mind if he installs it today while I'm home or he can wait to do it tomorrow while I'm gone to work! Of course I told today was fine and that I'd be glad to help. - TV is mounted on a wall bracket up high in the corner and he is a short fellow.

Not only does he go buy a brand new TV, but it went up from a ?35" to a 40" AND its a SMART TV! So where as before I had no HDMI port for my PS4 and had to buy a converter from Radio Shack who robbed me of $38 for a little thing less than 6" long! Now I have 2 HDMI ports and built in wifi. The remote actually has a button that says Netflix, another for Amazon, one for Vudu, and one for Youtube! Besides all kinds of other options built in! He says when he's had renters looking before they would ask if the TV ws smart or not and since he doesn't have cable to the rooms he figures giving access to Netflix and such with a smart TV helps increase the 'rentability' of the room. So from a business point of view it makes sense. I just don't understand his completely different attitude about late rent this time. I guess I should just count my blessings and move on huh?

D&D is good for the soul; this article proves it... :) Or, at least good for getting at what might be bothering a soul. :D No wonder I haven't been doing well lately. It's because I don't have a regular tabletop game any more.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

Cool article.

I've been forced to accept a 5th Edition game as my only "tabletop" endeavor (roll20). I *really* dislike the mechanics, generally, but we have a solid, fun group, so I make it work. Last week held a hilarious moment of "shock the GM" when my greataxe-wielding frenzy barbarian was hasted by the bard. In an encounter against a pair of stone giants (that should have been a "worse than deadly" combat), Makaad proceeded to murderize both giants nearly single-handed in 4 rounds. But you'd kinda expect that with 4 attacks each round and a movement speed of 100 feet. Quite therapeutic. :D

But I think our GM ended the session resolved to put that whole bit in check . . . . May bode poorly for tonight. lol

At least it's not 4E. In fact, "It's not 4E" seems to be the best argument anyone has come up with for playing 5E.

So very, very true!

Fortunately, there's still 3.5/Pathfinder.

Though there are still elements of 4th that I somewhat miss. Relevant "at-wills" being my go-to. But DDS' "spheres" systems address that *very* well.

I never liked that. I thought it took away too much of the distinction between classes. It felt like everyone had the same abilities with different flavor text. That and the lack of meaningful customization within a class are the main problems with 4E in my eyes.

I hope you don't misunderstand: there were never enough at-wills to suit me, but having a limited pool of tactical options one could use all day has always been a preference of mine. I like "always on" abilities in a major way. That was the appeal. The fact that every class had at-wills that leaned toward any one or more of the secondary roles was a bit of a downer (mostly since there were only a limited number of ways a striker could strike, or a controller control, etc. without it looking exactly like what the other classes were doing . . . .), but it didn't bother me much.

The trouble with 4th was that it turned every class into a wizard. Decision paralysis at every turn. Well, for most, anyway -- our crew would spend minutes agonizing over dropping an encounter power, nevermind dailies. I just burned through encounter powers from the word go, and then spammed the at-wills afterward. Seemed easier that way.

I'm going to have to whole-heartedly disagree about 5E. I've checked the PHB out from my local library about a half dozen times now and I think, as RPG rules systems go, it is sleek, elegant, and designed to make things run quickly and smoothly. I especially love their version of the skill system as it allows anybody to try anything without "training." Those who are "practiced" (game mechanics = proficient) at a skill have a better chance at success, but anybody can attempt any skill whenever they want, and some skills allow the leeway for different ability modifiers to be used. For example someone can attempt some acrobatics using their strength instead of their dexterity, because physical strength is also a marker of physical prowess. I've been playing 3.75 since it was created, no joke, but if I ever have opportunity to have a tabletop game again, I'm running 5E without question. Of course, I say all this having been gaming, almost exclusively, as a GM for the past decade plus. D&D 5E is much more fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants GM friendly.

. . . quick and smooth as an owl-turd-dipped hot loogie with a(n old-recipe) Visine chaser . . . . grumpsabunch

But you're right, Mended -- 5th does better allow for reaction and improvisation on the part of all the participants, and does so automatically. It can be a huge boon.

I just dislike the fact that:

* reach weapons are pretty useless
* charging does nothing 'cause it doesn't exist
* no such thing as flanking
* what's an AoO?

But, anyway . . . .

It does game. Which is all I really need it to do -- even if it doesn't do it as well as some all other systems . . . . :D

EDIT: for clarity

I am always a little taken aback by D&D players hatred for 4th ed.

I thought it was well produced and a quite decent RPG. But I had played little D&D since the early 1980's. I expect most role players who didn't have much D &D past would agree with me.

I think real D&D players objection was it changed a huge no of things they didn't want changed and wasn't D&D any more. So they deserted it in droves. And they don't just think it is inferior, they hate 4th ed.

If you want to sit down with some people and start playing as fast as possible, without spending hour or days on character creation, 5E is the system for that. I wish there was more room for customization, but I can see why it can make sense to limit it. I also love that there is a cantrip for visual illusions, and that rather than duplicating spells with more/less powerful versions, in some cases you can just cast the same spell at a different level. I don't, however, like the fact that there are cantrips that do 1d8 damage.

Watch the ghost post.

I am forever haunted by words I wish I'd never said...

Speaking of words... This looks really cool!

That does seem a promising venture. I can only say that the less it is indelibly linked to 5E, the better.

Sorry for the delay in posting, people -- too blasted busy. And still no pay raise.

And now for an episode of:

Adventures in Automotive Engineering with Syrus!

And here's your host: Syyyrussssss Terrigannnnnn!!!!

On my way to the auto shop to get my front end suspension checked, tires inspected, front end alignment. Turned into bank parking lot to check bank balance. Front driver's side ball joint just plain dropped out.

Thud.

Ain't goin' *nowhere*, bruh.

$65 more to get it to the shop than I was ready for . . . . And no timetable on when I can expect repairs complete, and no quote.

Some days, shoulda just stayed in bed.

But isn't this a job for Rant Raptor?

I am far too sophisticated in my rage to deign to address such trivial matters . . . .

I don't think it is so trivial to Syrus.

Sorry to hear that Syrus! That sounds horrid!

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy, and thieves break in and steal... :)

Sorry to hear that Syrus, being without adequate transportation is one of those most annoying first world problems that we've all either experienced or will experience at some point. I feel your pain. Hopefully things get fixed soon and inexpensively.

Speaking of stealing . . . .

Repairs effected. Thus far, effective. But that blasted price tag!!

This would otherwise be a Rantraptor moment. Fortunately, there's gaming to do, instead of listening to him froth at the keyboard.

Cthulu is a malignant dead god from the writings of HP Lovecraft. Cthulu is sort of the biggest and meanest lobster ever.

Now you know what Cthulu is. What the post is about is another mystery.
