... the potion of CMW he's been holding since the first stop at the monastery. ....
I just want to point out that is a potion of CLW, not CMW!

Pretty sure we had at least one CMW, which I think we should save for a bigger emergency.

I've been trying to be more deliberate with my die-roll descriptions so as to be clearer with them, as Mended indicated so many moons ago. I hope those earlier today were reasonable!
I'm not even sure *why* I started doing that . . . . Maybe a holdover from the quips my tabletop players have used in years past. No matter how the roll goes, though, I try not to edit them afterward. I truly enjoy adding that little "extra", though . . . . Thanks for allowing it, Mended; I'm delighted it sometimes evokes a laugh (w/ Stormstrider, this time)! :D

Yeah, not too keen on catching a high-velocity Gargantuan railroad spike with Kairon's lungs and spine. One and done. lol

If the GM will allow it, I'd also like to try to assist the stealth checks of the others coming the same direction as Illiam, pointing out places not to step and signalling them when to move and when to stay still, etc.

This brings to my mind an incident from a RPG played nearly 30 years ago. It was Hunter Planet, where you play alien freaks who go hunting human beings on Earth.
I was playing a ninja turtle, when they were obscure, long before the movie. I was urging the other PCs to be quiet and stealthy. This was ignored by the others, especially the Dalek who drove down the middle of the road chanting "Exterminate, exterminate!" About the least stealthy thing possible.
Eventually, my ninja turtle wound up jumping up and down, waving his hands in the air and raving about the need for quiet and stealth.
This is about the ultimate failure of assisting others to be stealthy.

Beyond all expectation, this country cabin complete with hiking trails, a cave, and a beautiful creek and pond (all part of one person's property) actually has wifi!!! I would have posted sooner, but, not sure if you all are experiencing this or not, Paizo was actually down. I've been having massive trouble with accessing Paizo periodically for the past week or so. I know they are aware of it, as there are currently no less than two threads devoted just to people having trouble accessing. Anyway, point being, after a rigorous, adventurous (it really got my RPG bones itching) hike through one of Missouri's finest state parks, complete with a ruined castle at the top of a bluff yesterday, we've decided to stick around the cabin and grounds today. I'll be around, and if we want to move things forward, I'm capable of responding. :)
BTW @Dolok, you were at 0 HP when you got the 14 from Kairon, so you are currently at 14. :)

WOW!!! I'm able to get on the website! Yay! I hope I can get on my campaign also!
And Mended, thanks for clarifying my HP!

BTW, Any of you ever watch the TV series, Once Upon a Time?
I've recently started watching it on Netflix. I'm working on the second season now. I'm really enjoying it! And the women are beautiful!
| Goruck of the Stone |
Back on, sorry about my absence. It was a rough weekend for me, but now I'm looking forward to some sweet pathfinder.
| Dolok Pickering |
Goruck, sorry you had a rough weekend. Here's mine. Very lengthy.
Begins: So, Saturday afternoon about 5:30ish - pm. The power suddenly goes out! A high of 89 degrees! My landlord had a guy cutting branches off a tree and the guy dropped a branch right on the power line coming into the house and made it come disconnected from the main power line! Power company says it's going to be about 8:30pm before a crew can get here to fix it.
Dinner: After a while of being very bored with nothing to do and starting to get very uncomfortably warm I decide that even though I really shouldn't economically, for my sanity I need to go 'out-for-dinner' so I can cool off and kill some time, and I remember the night before enjoying my time at Hooters! So ... off to Hooters again! I just got a plate of fries and a Mt Dew, and sat there for ... maybe 1 1/2 hrs? enjoying the view.
Drunk Landlord's wife: Come home and my landlord's wife is sitting on the front steps so no way I can avoid her ... She tells me to sit down. It quickly becomes obvious that she is drunk! The landlord comes out and says that if it's not fixed by 10pm he will put us renters up in a motel for the night! I almost passed out! This is the same guy that threw such a fit when I was going to be 2 weeks late? The wife starts to make all these innuendoes and suggestive comments about how she is going to spend the night with me in my room! And asking me if I think she's cute or not? And do I like girls with Tattoos? (She has some). I basically try to ignore her and break away from her as soon as I can. Just to be clear, she's not ugly, just a slob, that constantly wears sweats and t-shirts and does nothing to try to look nice as far as I can tell! In case it's not clear - I FEEL NO ATTRACTION WHATSOEVER TO THIS WOMAN! And add to that the fact that she's married - so that's a big no-no, AND she's my landlord's wife! Get in trouble with my landlord for that slob? No thanks!
Electric Company: The first truck comes about 8:30 like they said. He looks at it and says first he is not qualified to do this job. Secondly, because it's back across the water reservoir and in the trees where they have to re-connect it they have to get a tree crew out first before it can be re-connected. My landlord later told me a tree crew of five guys (just to cut a few branches?) did come about midnight and was here until about 3am. Then when the crew came some time later to do the connection they said the tree crew had not gotten everything they needed to so they had to call for another tree crew, then another crew to re-connect ... all-in-all they finally get done around 12:30 pm on Sunday ... Now back to where my HORROR really began!
My horror begins: About 9:30pm Sat, The wife suddenly tells me they are waiting on me to go with them to the motel - no warning that we were leaving! And I still haven't figured out exactly why, he decides I should just ride with them instead of taking my car - whatever - just gonna be there over night and come back in the morning right? OMG!!!! WRONG!!!! So anyways, the wife was supposed to have called motels and made reservations - when we go to leave, no she had not made any, supposedly just called and asked prices. So the landlord is getting mad with her between her drunken innuendos earlier and she's still drunk and being very disrespectful towards him so they are arguing while I'm sitting very uncomfortably in the back seat. He takes off supposedly towards the nearest motel which is only about a half mile away - BUT I who have only been driving in this area for about 1 & 1/2 years realize he is going totally the wrong way. I figure maybe he knows something I don't or maybe he's going somewhere else first - so I say nothing. The arguing continues. Once we get out on a main road about 2 miles in the opposite direction, he asks where this motel is?!?!?!? HE DRIVES BY THIS PLACE EVERY TIME HE GOES TO WORK OR CHURCH OR THE GROCERY STORE OR MOST ANYWHERE!?!?!?!?! WHAT THE BLANKETY-BLANK WAS HE THINKING????? So, the wife yells some more, I calmly and in a gentle voice mention the intersection it's located at. He turns around, we pass at least 2 other motels. We get there and find out that supposedly there's some convention in town and according to that clerk we are not going to find ANY rooms available! By the way, the landlord has made it clear he intends to get individual rooms for each renter and a room for him and his wife, but the wife is still saying she's going to be in my room all night. We drive off and stop back at one of the motels we passed earlier and no rooms, we top at the third one and they have rooms! Yay right?
The motel: I almost asked to be allowed to come back and spend the night in my hot, powerless, boring room! But I didn't want to offend the landlord over his generosity. The motel was basically a crack-house/whore-house run down piece of junk! After he dropped me off there so I had no transportation to go elsewhere - then I realize the dead-bolt on the door didn't work and there were no other locks on the door! Of course you still have to have a key-card but! I don't feel very secure. The windows are also low enough someone could come in that way. I start to look around the room. The wall paper is starting to peel down in several places, the toilet is running non stop, There is a light fixture that came out from the bathroom sitting in the corner of the room and that light fixture in the bathroom doesn't work (There was another light that did so that was ok) The place was not clean. The mirror in the bathroom looked like it had been steamed up from a shower and someone had just sorta wiped the middle section and it was still all streaky and the rest of the mirror looked like it had not been cleaned in a year! Out of curiosity I opened the drawers and found a used pair of women's underwear! Still not certain if it was panties or a sports bra, I didn't want to touch it to look closely enough to find out! I set my laptop down on the desk and the desk almost falls over! I sit down on the bed and fins the mattress is covered in that crinkly sounding plastic that won't stop making noise! I get my computer on and get on to their 'free Wi-Fi' - but every single page I tried just came up instantly that the page could not be loaded because it took too long to respond?!?!?! When it comes up almost instantly with that? When I called and asked the front desk the guy's like ... 'yeah it's just a weak signal or something'. And it was plain that he didn't care and was not about to try to help. So I grab the remote for the TV, hit the power button and the light on the remote blinks, but nothing happens with the TV. I check and make sure it's plugged in, and the I see there is a light on the TV. I hit the power button manually and it comes on! The remote thankfully did work for the rest of it! Old TV though and I had to turn the volume all the way up to be able to hear it at all. Considering the rest of the room I decide I'm not pulling back the covers on the bed, nor am I getting undressed, and considering the security I decided to not even take off my shoes! I lay on top of the covers fully dressed, shoes and all and watched movies - at least they had basic cable which surprised me! I stay kinda half sitting up and sleep very sporadically in fits, never fully resting or comfortable. Also the AC did work well! So I was cool and had cable TV.
Sunday morning on: Check out time is supposed to be 11am. About 9am the landlord sends me a text saying it's going to be at least noon or later before there's power, so he's extended the motel room another day! If he had asked me first I woulda told him not to! I could deal with it til noon! Just get me outta this hell-hole! But no. By early afternoon I'm getting hungry and thirsty. There are no glasses in this motel room. The ice bucket is just a cheap plastic bucket with no plastic liner or any such thing. The landlord is not responding and I had brought no food or drinks from home. I finally realize I’m going to need to spend some of my meager money and order a pizza with a 2-liter. THAT WAS GOOD! I drank a whole 2-liter of Mtn Dew in roughly 4-5 hrs! By midnight of Sunday I had eaten the whole pizza as well! I did also that afternoon go get some ice in the bucket to put my bottle of Mtn Dew in it. Later that night I ended up eating ice out of the bucket and even drinking the melted water! Hope I don't get sick or catch anything! Probably wasn't smart to do that. Correction - It was NOT smart period. I still have not heard back from the landlord by 9 pm on Sunday. Beginning to wonder about being able to get back home and get to work Monday morning ?!?!? Finally at 3:38AM of Monday morning he sends me text saying he will pick me up around 7:30 or 8 am?!?!?! He did. I got back home in plenty of time to get myself ready and go to work. I only worked 4 hrs and then used my FMLA to leave early. Came home and did a little bit of stuff and then fell asleep for roughly 3 hours. Now typing this.
Food Stuffs! And of course I had just gone grocery shopping Friday night. Two quarts of ice cream, a full unopened bag of 120 ct Totino's pizza rolls, a couple of frozen dinners, about 8 hot dogs, two containers of cottage cheese, half a large container of French Onion dip and a gallon of milk. Now, I was smart enough to not open my freezer/refrigerator doors at all so as to keep as much as the cold in as I could. I just tasted the milk and it does not seem to be sour? I've tasted sour milk before ... I'm wondering if all these items are still safe? What do you all think?

BTW, Any of you ever watch "Everly" 2015 w/Salma Hayek? Prostitute that fights back basically. I just found it on Netflix last night and while a bit bloody and gory (especially the torture scene with the "make-up artist") and WAY too many cusswords, I enjoyed the movie quite a bit! A few concepts that were new to me at least, such as the afore mentioned 'make-up-artist' - mainly his 4 'assistants'? Actually dressed in full ... oriental (Japanese I believe?) gear including the wooden sandals! And the majority of the movie all taking place within the confines of a 1 bedroom loft/apartment! A LOT of deaths and all surrounding Salma Hayek! And while she is an absolutely gorgeous woman, this movie was NOT about that! A brief nude scene of her (or a body double - couldn't say) at the beginning, but you can't really see anything. Fully recommend it, but NOT for little ones or sensitive people!

A gory torture scene, who would have thought. :P
I have not seen the movie. I have seen a movie from the 1970's called "The Day of the Woman" or alternatively "I Spit on Your Grave". A woman gets pack raped and kills off the perpetrators. It was banned for violence until recently.
It seems good in principal, a rape victim cutting off one rapist's penis with a knife and listening to classical music as her bleeds out, destroying another rapist's penis with the outboard motor of a boat et al.
But it is very far from realistic. Vigilantism will get you in serious legal trouble and is not normally a good idea.

Question Mended? That room to the lower right that has not been explored yet, as far as we can see is it just the one room on this level, or is it a tower going up? We would see if there are floors above it from the outside if I understand the map correctly right?
Dolok (AND Dolok's player!) are very curious about that room and the room to the north next to area 12 which haven't been explored yet.
| MendedWall12 |
The room to the lower right is, in fact, the bell tower/storage for the old monastery. That it hasn't been explored is probably mostly because when you guys approached the monastery the first time, I'm pretty sure I described it as such, and a bell tower doesn't seem like a very interesting place. If you want to explore it though, by all means, please go ahead. The denizens of said tower would be very happy for a plump meal... Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!! As for the other unexplored area... That cannot be easily discerned from the outside.
| Dolok Pickering |
Sorry, I figured you had described it previously, I was just too lazy to search if truth be told! :)
Illiam Taal
|
Didn't we see spiderwebs in the tower?
Edit: Search doesn't seem to be working at the moment, but I remember assuming that there were spiders (or one big one) in there. Maybe it was just Ardan's warning combined with out-of-character hints from Mended like the one above.
Illiam Taal
|
Search is back. Athena brought back some web from the tower, that's how we knew there were spiders in there.
Illiam Taal
|
So, Mended said it was getting late, and I did mention being low on spells, but I think we should at least start to explore below before making camp. Maybe we can find a safe place to camp down there, clear a room that's off the kobolds' route or something. Failing that, we should at least try to clear the monastery and find a defensible place to hold up topside.
| Dolok Pickering |
Clearing the monastery ground floor makes sense to me and then holing up for the night.
I'm also curious - such a 'big boulder' blocking the entrance, how do the little, weak kobolds move it?
Illiam Taal
|
Good point. Besides being small creatures, kobolds have a -4 to STR. I suspect, though, that this is a case of the author of the module not thinking about it in as much detail as the players do.
Illiam Taal
|
So what you're saying is, they have multiple casters of the third level or higher with them, or one of a high enough level to cast a second level spell 4 times/day. Either that or they are rich enough not to blink an eye at 360gp worth of wand charges every time they want to open the front door.
Illiam Taal
|
Yes, it appears, to everyone, that Gurtlekrep is very much interested in helping the PCs dispatch his king, his king's mate, and their magic-wielding counselor.
Does it sound to anyone else like the GM is hinting that we should take Gurtlekrep along? Might be the next Grung? Either way, I plan to hold on to his set of masterwork thieves' tools.
Illiam Taal
|
So I'm clear Goruck, that roll only works to identify the "ghost" if it is some kind of aberration? Because, if that is the case, it didn't work. I'm thinking Illiam's player knows what it is, though Illiam the character doesn't. :D
This certainly confirmed it. There's enough information in those first two sentences alone to deduce the creature's type.
| MendedWall12 |

Yes, one of the things you have suggested here is true. Interestingly though, that doesn't necessarily mean that's how they always open this door. There are a number of kobolds in the Truescale tribe that have templates applied to them.
| Dolok Pickering |
Aaaahhh templates ... I was running a campaign once were the final big boss was supposed to be a half-dragon/half Mind-flayer! There were no actual templates that fit that though so I was having to create it myself. I was still working on it's creation when the campaign died, so never finished it. :(
A lot of posting going on this weekend in this game! Which is exciting, but we don't seem to be moving the game along?
Illiam and I seem to be in agreement (WOW! Right?), clear this level then sleep before going down. What do the rest of you say?

I think I agree with Dolok, clear the monastery and hole up somewhere in here.
If we start exploring below we will probably run into Kobolds or other hazards. And once we start encountering Kobolds we may have to fight all of them. As Illiam is low on spells, I have used some as well, it makes sense to start down there tomorrow.

Question: are those stairs in the worg's room? Is that potentially another way down, or do they go up to a second floor?
| MendedWall12 |
Question: are those stairs in the worg's room? Is that potentially another way down, or do they go up to a second floor?
Yes they are. Yes it is another way down, harder than the "hidden" entrance, as a large portion of stone has collapsed onto the stairwell. It would require several strong men at least an hour's full time labor to remove all the rubble necessary to use that entrance.
Illiam Taal
|
Considering that Illiam heard voices behind the "hidden" entrance, I'd be in favor of trying the other way in. Of course, it's not my character that would be doing the imaginary physical labor.
| Dolok Pickering |
Illiam Taal wrote:Question: are those stairs in the worg's room? Is that potentially another way down, or do they go up to a second floor?Yes they are. Uuuummmm ... we don't have "several strong men"! We only have two. While I like the idea of entering through a different entrance than the ones the kobolds use, I think the DM is saying that this is not really a viable option.
| MendedWall12 |
Well... It is viable, but just requires an investment of time and strength that is much greater than the "main" entrance. I have to say, were I in your guys' shoes, I might put in the time and strength necessary to get in that entrance that hasn't been used in ages. It could possibly give the advantage of surprise. So, that's a decision the group would have to make together. Both entrances are perfectly viable, one just requires A LOT less effort. ;)
Edit: Also wanted to say that Illiam just heard the voices, "tonight" in game. Will the kobolds attached to those voices still be there in the morning? (Because a few of you said you want to rest topside, before heading down in the morning.) I'd go back and look at what the voices said, and see if you think so... Also remember that Gurtlekrep seems to have just woken up and taken his breakfast before you all caught him. This would suggest very highly that the Truescale kobolds are a nocturnal bunch... All things to consider. :)
| Chillel |
As to moving rocks, I think we should use the easier quicker entrance because we are in a hurry to rescue the kids.
I can see what you are saying Mended Wall about the voices and kobolds leaving. Will check. It is usually a good idea to listen to the GM.
Illiam Taal
|
If we're taking eight hours to rest anyway, a couple more to give us a safe way in and ensure the element of surprise seems worth it. Of course, Mended seems to be implying that if we rest for the night, we'll get that through either entrance in the morning. Still, it would be nice to know where those guys are before we encounter them. We're more likely to have to face them as part of a larger group, otherwise.
| MendedWall12 |
Sounds within the realm of what a level 1 spell should be able to do to me, or a bucket on the head for that matter. It's not like it's permanent blindness. That trick isn't even original, I got the idea from a bunch of forum posts arguing about when the blinded characters get a save, and modified it from the blindfold/bucket-on-head idea to try to force them to use an action to get their saves. Just trying to show why I honestly didn't think that would be a controversial use of the spell, but if the GM won't allow that, I'll try something else.
Illiam, I think if you look at the three spells you linked there, you'll see the obvious differences between their power level, and what it was you were trying to accomplish with your illusion. Touch of Blindness, obviously as the name indicates, requires that the caster actually touch the creature, allows a fortitude save to negate, and only lasts for one round. Mudball can simply be removed with a standard action, and Color Spray is one of the most effective first level spells there is, but is also a specifically shaped (15' cone burst) spell that has to be applied wholesale and allows an immediate will save to negate. Comparing those with what it was you were trying to accomplish with Silent Image (essentially confer the blindness condition without allowing a save), I think you can understand why I wouldn't allow it. So moving forward, please keep in mind for your illusion spells, I will be putting limits on how effective they can be, and I will absolutely be taking the effectiveness of other spells of the same level into account when I do.
:)
| Syrus Terrigan |
So, for future reference, Mended --
We can't determine line of sight from a corner? Nor line of effect? I know that I was accustomed to such from 3.5, and have long been under the impression that it held true in Pathfinder . . . .
EDIT: per d20pfsrd --
Line of Effect A line of effect is a straight, unblocked path that indicates what a spell can affect. A line of effect is canceled by a solid barrier. It’s like line of sight for ranged weapons, except that it’s not blocked by fog, darkness, and other factors that limit normal sight. A line of effect starts from any corner of your square and extends to the limit of its range or until it strikes a barrier that would block it. A line-shaped spell affects all creatures in squares through which the line passes. Line of Sight A line of sight is the same as a Line of Effect but with the additional restriction that that it is blocked by fog, darkness, and other factors that limit normal sight (such as Concealment).

Silent image does allow a save, all you have to do is interact with it. This is usually interpreted not only to include touching it, but you can also "interact" with an illusion by spending a standard action examining it. That, of course, is not something a mindless creature is likely to do, which is why I chose this moment to try it.
If you do touch an illusion, in fact, the intangibility usually gives you proof that it is false, allowing you to disbelieve automatically, no save required. I chose a haze (rather than a bucket or blindfold as others have done) to get around this, and made it move with them so that they couldn't just step out of it, but all this was only to remove the loopholes that could allow them to get their vision back without spending a standard action on it. Of course, mindless creatures should arguably be incapable of disbelieving even if they make the save, which would make illusions particularly effective against them, but you indicated earlier that you wouldn't interpret the rules that way.
Disbelieving an illusion makes it transparent, which would remove the blindness, though I totally agree that it would be an OP use of the spell if there was no way to save against the spell. As you can see though, I didn't expect the effect to be as powerful as you thought I was trying to make it :)
While we're on the subject, though, you would agree that illusory object can provide concealment (against creatures that have not disbelieved them), right?
