Yikes. Harsh. His Sense Motive is only one point higher than my Bluff and he only beat me by 4 points. I don't think my story was that outlandish. Yet somehow I'm a terrible liar. Sheesh.

I mean... I think, in general, Uruelleth is a decent liar. In this situation, your lie probably wasn't the best. I was actually thinking about giving Shark a bonus on his check based on the believability of the lie. The main problem was you naming the ship 'The Monkey Goblin.' That was a bit weird.

Yeah, the Monkey Goblin was there for a spot of humor -- it's tough playing someone who's a bit dumb, but also a good bluffer. It's a fine line to spin a good tale but not be too clever.

Hey everyone,

Just a reminder that I'm heading out of town on vacation and will be returning on the 10th. I really enjoy playing with y'all, so I hope to post some, but I'll have to see how it goes.

In the meantime, please feel free to continue the current scene.

Some other things you might consider doing in the meantime:

Planning your acquisition of a Red Mantis skiff - There's more than one way you can try tackling this, so it would be a good idea to discuss it as a group, in-character or out-of-character.
Deciding how to infiltrate and/or assault the Hospice - I added a picture of the Hospice to the maps slides. The lobby doesn't look exactly how I described it, but it's close enough. There are three sets of double doors on the backside. All the windows (besides the ones looking into the lobby) are boarded up.
Discussing how to approach the Kaneano - Shark mentioned you might not have to use violence, so you might consider what you plan to do if/when you meet them.
Deciding what other missions to do - The rumored cult of Norgorber has come up a couple times, but there are other missions on the boards that Talivar saw which you also might consider doing (not all at once, of course, but in due time).
Oh, by the way, go ahead and level your characters up to level 6. Besides spells prepared and spells per day, which you'll have to sleep to get, everything else about your character you can go ahead and bump up to level 6. You can go ahead and pick out spells, if you want to, you just won't be able to use them yet.

Yep, that’s correct, Talia. As a general rule, divination magic of any kind won’t function on the island. So, if any of you want to prepare or learn a divination spell, it’d probably be a good idea to check with me to see if it’ll function on the island before you select it.

Ha and now I get to agonize about which spells to give Talivar ;) I suppose haste is the correct but boring answer for his lvl 3 slot. Human FCB gives him a level 1 or 2 spell. Any suggestions? I'm inclined towards utility, maybe glitter dust or invisiblity or something else. Rope trick or mirror refuge could also be useful too.

My advice Talivar?

Pick something that you think you will cast often every day.
Anything situational (like a 1/day spell) Talia can cover, For instance, Haste is probably better on you (since you can spam cast it every encounter) than on Talia who can probably only really prep it once or twice for the entire day.

Don't stress though, I'll cover whatever else we need.

If you wanted a less boring option to Haste, Slow is probably equally devastating.

Glitterdust is never a wrong choice, since it has two separate debuffs -- preventing stealth/invisibility and blinding opponents. Also, no SR, so that's good too.

Other core spells: Stinking cloud is good area control, hold person could be hugely useful, and suggestion may be good depending on how creative you get and what the GM lets you get away with.

I want to make a shaman now. They seem to be super flexible.

Also, Talivar is correct. The two encounters with the monkey goblins in the jungle were after you had already reached level 5. You’ve all received a fair bit of social experience along the way as well.

Uruelleth, since Step Up involves an immediate action and immediate actions can be a bit wonky in the pbp format, do you normally plan to use it? If so, do you just want to state during combat when you don’t want to use it?

That seems about right. I doubt there will be many scenarios in which I won't use it. Maybe when I've got reach and the enemy is stepping back but still inside my reach? It could happen -- I've got enlarge person and long arm.

I also can't be flanked, so I won't be afraid to step up into the middle of a pack of enemies either.

I think it's safe to say that I'll always use it unless I say otherwise.

I did think of a scenario that might require a little clarification -- that of me being surrounded by enemies and one or more chooses to fall back. In those situations, I'll try to be clear about my primary target.

For example, let's say I'm in reach of a spellcaster and two mooks. I'll likely want to kill the caster first, so I would ignore a minion stepping back. Similarly, if it's just a bunch of mooks around me, I might ignore one who is clearly withdrawing from the fight so I can get a full attack on the group. I'll try to be specific about my battle plan in those scenarios.

So after the storm left me without power for a good 18 hours, you get to do a lot of thinking after sitting in bed doing largely nothing all day.

So, I think Akashic Communion is like, Talia's signature spell and I can use it on any event or topic.
Any ideas? I can probably use it to search up on Bastien (but would need an event to home in on), or something generic (as a 'topic" can be pretty much anything.

Yeah but she would need to tell me, since she hasn't (to my knowledge) revealed her prior history. Like, I could probably burn the spell anyway and eventually learn that she and him knew each other, but if she does tell us we possibly save a spell slot.

It's clear Bastien knows Kilarra from that letter. But no, Kilarra didn't tell you about him. You could ask. Frankly, I assumed someone would have after he left her a lovely gift. I was surprised no one did. Kilarra'll be an evasive snot about it, but she'll tell you with some effort.

Yeah Talia didn't ask because Kilarra hasn't really been like, super welcoming etc. Like, OOC I know its entirely because Talia is a divine caster and therefore the reason Kilarra has distaste but I'm keeping that knowledge seperate.

IC Talia just (probably) thinks Kilarra would brush it off.

Anyway, while power gets fixed both her and at my workplace (and the fact I'm just lying around bored until its done), here is an initial list.

Prefacing that we probably need to be as precise as possible. So while the below are 'precise' they might not have actually happened and we therefore get nothing.

I'm also not suggesting we do all of this, I'm literally just listing everything I can off the top of my head. Now, bearing in mind the strict wording of a "topic" or "event"...

-Something to pin down on Bastien. Maybe his ascension to Red Mantis Assasin? Maybe viewing the "event" of him reporting back to the Vernai after killing Rix. We could also "view" the event that lead to Kilarra's imprisonment and therefore kinda know her innocence but legally the spell doesn't prove anything and I don't know how much use it would have.

-Viewing the event of the Vernai learning of the Pact against them. We know this almost certainly happened. We might also get an idea of the orders or initial plans they laid. Bastien briefly mentioned this in his letter so I'm fairly certain we can confirm it happened.

-We can view the showdown between Bastien and Rix but I'm uncertain how much value this would have.

-We can view the events after leaving our crew members behind. Maybe its a moot point seeing as we are outside it now but maybe we can see if they have any links to Red Mantis. Then again, probably moot.

-We can spot a relevent event from Priest-Captain Rannos Blackarm's history, who we could make connections with fairly quickly. Healing is going to be useful and now that I'm level 6, I won't channel my life spirit. I can cheat a little and channel it the day after any combat but we might not have that long. As for events, perhaps seeing what led him to become Priest-Captain? Something we could learn to impress or gain favor from.

-Songbird Preserve / Jaxira Daralamir. Mentioned in Rix's notes, I cannot think of anything relevent to view although probably an important NPC

-Origent Gamaron who according to Rix performed in the Citadel. This could be very useful if it happened. Alternatively, we could use the spell to check if he is Red Mantis. This has more relevance after the job board that mentioned him again - could be wise. Problems though with viewing his performance in the Citadel is that things might have changed since he last performed.

-Cult of Norgorber (Job Board). I'm hesitant on this, since I find it really odd that Mantis put out an open call for help. Makes them look weak. What I actually suspect is that they already infiltrated it (since they own like, everything here). Maybe view the event that led to Watch Captain Klorn getting his orders? Really 'scared' (for want of a better word) to work closely with obvious Red Mantis agents though.

-Kidnapped Son (Job Board). Could view the capture, see the pirates, learn descriptions, names etc. Could then go to Priest-Captain Rannos Blackarm with it (see above) and then proceed with a rescue mission. Assuming we believe its worth it of course.

-Talivar, we could view Alayna in Sivlamlik. Talia would take a lot of coaxing to do this though since a Mantis agent himself threatened Talia with it and Talia doesn't really want to see that place. Also, I don't know of Alayna and I don't know how much use it would have, but hey, IC roleplay is fun!

-Vernai Driara (aka chick who blew up our ship). She's a high ranking Vernai, and peeking into her past could be useful. We know next to nothing about her though.

-The Hermit / The Hermitage. Dude who saved us back when ship blew up. He could have been a plot device or he could be relevant / important. Dont know much about him though.

Thats everything I can think of at a moment (although theres probably a ton more that I'm missing). Feel free to discuss / add / delete entries on this list. GM, let me know if I'm going too far on this because I'm heavily conscious this is more work for you and you might want to preserve secrets (or some NPC's might just be "background").

I can't say too much specifically lest I show my hand, but everything on your list could be useful, Talia, to one degree or another. Each event/topic/etc's usefulness will also likely depend on how you use whatever information you get.

Just a reminder, though I think you know this, Akashic Communion is a dangerous spell, to some degree, and you may not be able to trust everything you see.

As for you being heavily conscious about the work involved with the spell, one of the nice things about being GM is that I can choose what details to reveal. So if the roll I make for you in secret goes well, you'll get some useful information, but there will almost certainly still be secrets you'll have to discover at a later date.

That said, I really enjoyed writing the event with Makori, so I don't mind you doing it often, if you decide to. We can just play it by ear to see if it gets to be too frequent, but I don't anticipate it being an issue.

Thanks for getting back to me GM, I feel a little bit more relaxed about using it slightly more liberally now.

If anyone has own ideas / plans about what to learn about, feel free to sing out. I think I'm going to try and adjust Talia's spell list to heavily focus on information gathering, falling back on hexes in combat.

Talivar has a pretty excellent spell list for combat purposes as well so we should be well balanced.

Just cut her. If she can channel positive she can heal herself, if negative she can bleed out. If she would rather die than talk, cut her, let her suffer, and then I'll heal her and we can start again.
