Welcome everyone and congratulations! There were over 20 applications, so you had a lot of competition. Thank you all for accepting my invitations.

Please review the combat protocol when you have time. You can view it below. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

Combat Protocol:

Combat should be among the funnest parts of any Pathfinder game. I hope the guidelines below will help streamline the process.

1. Marching order should be established beforehand (preferably in the discussion thread) so that the GM can correctly place your character tokens on the map at the start of combat.

2. Initiative and Perception rolls as needed

3. Surprise round, if necessary. Each player in the surprise round who goes before the enemies will act. Player actions will then be resolved. Enemy actions will then take place and be resolved. Players acting after the enemies will act then their actions will be resolved. All actions will be resolved in initiative order.

4. Actions should be posted in everyone's "block" as detailed in step 3. This means that in-character dialogue and actions should, at least to some degree, factor in initiative order. The GM will sort NPCs into groups to better streamline the initiative order (normally just one group). The GM will post DCs for knowledge-based checks or other skill checks as needed at the beginning of combat. Players that wish to roll on such a check should do so at the start of their combat posts. If a spellcraft check comes up during combat, the GM will post the information on the spell in a spoiler with the appropriate DC. The same would apply for knowledge checks if new creatures enter the fight after the start of combat. Please only roll one knowledge check. If you’re not sure which knowledge to roll for, just roll a d20 and I’ll apply the appropriate modifiers.

5. Actions should specify standard action, move action, swift action, etc. If an action requires an opponent to make a saving throw or another kind of check, please list the DC in your post. Also, please specify what modifiers are in play when making an attack action, skill check, saving throw, etc.

6. Actions will be adjusted as needed based on actions that took place earlier in the round. As much as possible, rolls that have already been made will still be used, even if a character has to move to a slightly different location to attack or cast a spell.

7. Saving throws will be rolled by the character who needs to save. Should you need to roll a saving throw, I'll post a spoiler with the effect (should you fail the save) in the post that mentions you need to roll. Subsequent rolls to save for the same spell or effect will also be rolled by the affected player(s). Any saving throw that needs to be rolled should be rolled at the start of a player’s combat post. In the event a player needs to roll a saving throw, knowledge check, and/or spellcraft check in the same post, the saving throw should be rolled first, then the knowledge check, then the spellcraft check – all at the start of the post.

8. Keep in mind that ranged attack factors like shooting into melee and cover will be applied as normal.

9. Also keep in mind pathing when assigning move actions to your character as attacks of opportunity will happen if not purposefully avoided. Be sure to include acrobatics roll(s) if your pathing requires moving through a square that will provoke an attack of opportunity.

10. Once everyone has acted for each "block", the GM will post a summary of the players’ actions and their effects along with the action(s) of hostile and/or neutral NPCs. If a PC or NPC provokes an attack of opportunity, the GM will roll for NPCs and offer PCs the chance to make the attack of opportunity at the beginning of their next turn. Should an attack of opportunity prevent a subsequent action of a PC or NPC, that action will no longer be considered to have taken place.

11. If a character needs to select a different set of actions due to the results of an action or actions earlier in the round, the GM will change who the character is attacking or targeting, if appropriate. If not, the GM will ask that character’s player to post an alternate set of actions.

12. Simple clarifications or corrections like, “That enemy rolled a 15, but my AC is 16. Wouldn’t the attack have missed?” are fine in the gameplay thread. Please mention it if a modifier was missed or you were given an incorrect bonus on a roll. I’m perfectly fine with retroactively changing the roll, when necessary. Questions about combat mechanics or how a specific spell or effect works should be asked in the discussion thread.

13. Repeat steps 4-12 till combat is over.

As everyone gets sorted, I have a few questions for you to consider, mostly inquiries related to your builds. One general thing that I would mention is that I didn’t see anyone who took Use Magic Device. While you certainly don’t have to take it, it might be prudent for at least one of you to have a rank in it. Also, if anyone wants to make minor adjustments or refinements to their builds, please feel free to do so. If you’re not sure what ‘minor’ means, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Kilarra:
Are you planning on taking weapon finesse? I noticed you went with several odd-numbered stats. You might consider putting a couple of those stats at an even number as it may be a while before you can bump any of them up. Just a suggestion!

Talia:
I noticed you didn’t have your campaign trait listed in your crunch. I’m assuming it’s Red Mantis Historian, but you may want to make sure you applied all appropriate bonuses. Also, I noticed one of your feats was Accursed Hex. While that’s certainly fine, you don’t currently have any hexes that can benefit from it, so you might want to consider changing it. For Midnight, I want to note that I won’t target or assign damage to him as long as he is in your square/on your person. If you separate from him, though, he’s fair game.

Talivar:
Do you plan on having a mundane weapon of any kind? You may be just planning to use ray of frost if you have to, but you might want to consider getting a crossbow or light mace just in case.

Uruelleth:
You may want to double check the number of languages you have. With four ranks in linguistics, I think you should still get 4 languages, even with the low int score. And you should get elven just for being an elf.

Vorya:
You may want to double check your health. You only list it as 23 and have 3d8+8 written off to the side. You should probably have a bit more.

Zeldana:
I don’t see where you took any ranks in Handle Animal. With Bobar having an intelligence score of 3, strictly speaking, it isn’t necessary. But if you ever have to push him for some reason, you would be out of luck without ranks. I would advise taking at least one rank in that skill, just in case. Also, you may already be intending to do this, but I would ask that you include Bobar’s actions with your own in the same post. Unless you can think of a very compelling reason, I would forgo giving him an alias at all. In a face-to-face game, I would probably have you two roll initiative separately, but it’s much more practical for you both to have the same initiative in a play-by-post game. I’ll use whichever one of you has a higher initiative modifier when I roll for your initiative.

-----

Odds and Ends:
- Everyone needs to go ahead and decide who will keep track of loot. I have a basic loot spreadsheet (courtesy of Aardvark DM) for whoever does so or that person can come up with their own, if they prefer. If you make your own, it should still be made in Google Sheets, for the sake of accessibility. For those who won’t be specifically responsible for loot, I would ask that you help out by putting your starting items on the loot list.

- Everyone should also go ahead and decide the party's marching order for when I need to place your character tokens on maps.

- If you haven’t already, be sure to set up a profile and add your character’s information to it. Also, be sure to add some sort of quick stats line to display below your character’s name. It should look something like this:

Half-elf Kineticist 1 | HP 13/13 | AC14 T11 FF13 | CMD 13 | F+6 R+3 W+3* | Init +1 | Perc +7

Feel free to adjust that format slightly to suit your preferences. Be sure to include an asterisk (*) by stats that have conditional modifiers. For those of you who have spells, either include a (spoilered) line in your quick stats with your spells left for the day (for spontaneous casters) or include a list of your spells for the day (for prepared casters) in a spoiler in your first post for each in-game day. If you have some other limited resource, it would probably be a good idea to include that in your quick stats line in one form or another. Please keep your current health up-to-date in your quick stats line or in your posts for easy reference. If you receive any conditional modifiers, positive or negative, via a spell or other ability, be sure to track that as well. If a condition persists after combat, you’ll want to add it to your quick stats line until it’s resolved.

- I know we have quite a few spellcasters. If you all want to coordinate what spells you know, I’m perfectly fine with that, especially since most of you are spontaneous casters. I know it may be a bit meta-gamey, but I’m sure everyone will want to do it when they start leveling up, so we might as well do it from the start to avoid frustration.

- I’m going to try to avoid worrying about things like encumbrance and low-light conditions. If someone is carrying a ton (perhaps literally), then I’ll take that into consideration, but I would rather not get bogged down in the minutiae of a few pounds.

- Be proactive about addressing problems. If you’re not sure about how something works or why something happened, ask about it. If you’re not comfortable asking in front of everyone, feel free to PM me. Similarly, please PM me right away if you’re not happy with how things are going. I can’t promise I can fix it, but I’ll certainly try. I would rather the issue be addressed before it becomes terminal. It’ll work both ways, though. If I see a problem with a player, I’ll PM them about it to try and address it before it becomes a bigger issue.

- Please, please: let the group know in this discussion thread if you’ll be unavailable so we can move things along. One of the advantages of having six players is that we should be able to function fine as long as at least a few players have posted. It only takes two or three minutes to let us know you’ll be away. Your fellow players and GM will greatly appreciate it. If I have to be away for some reason, I’ll try to plan ahead so it’s at a time when everyone’s out of combat and can do some roleplaying in the meantime.

- Lastly, don't forget to have fun! We’ll likely all make mistakes, so let's be patient and kind to one another so this can be an adventure that’s as enjoyable as possible for everyone.

If any of you want to have connections between characters prior to arriving in Iadara, I’m open to that. There are three of you who’ve been in Taldor at one point or another, so it’s plausible that at least a couple of you would know each other. Prior connections aren’t necessary, of course, just a possibility.

I look forward to playing with you all in the years to come, so I want to get things started on the right foot. Please let me know if you have any questions about the above or anything else. Depending on how much everyone has to discuss and how many questions you all have to ask, I’ll likely get the opening gameplay post up later today or tomorrow.

Again, welcome and congratulations. Achaekek and the Red Mantis have quite the team to reckon with!

Hello! Glad to meet everyone. Let's hope we can get this game started off right. Making a PBP work takes effort on all parts so let's make this one one of the greats.

I've been looking forward to playing with a group for a while now.

On Use Magical Device, it isn't one of my class skills so it wouldn't make sense for me to take it, but I can if you folks want me to.

GM Health:
Am I doing math wrong? It is 8+5+5+5= 23?

Female Human Slayer 9 | HP: 67/67 | AC 27* (T 16, FF 22*) (+2 vs. traps) | CMB: +12 CMD: 26 | F:+10* R:+13* W:+8* (+2 vs. divine, +2 vs. traps, +5 vs. continuing FX) | Init +4 | Perc +14*, SM +11, Bluff +11, Diplomacy +1, Intimidate +5 | Speed 30 ft. | Active Conditions: Shield

Hi everyone! As mentioned in my application I'm pretty new to pbp so probably will have plenty of questions and errors along the way.

I'm really excited to be joining this game and can't wait to get started. I haven't re-read everyone's characters yet, but will do so soon.

On Use Magic Device: Kilarra's had exposure to wands and other magical devices through her time with Bastien, so I could see her taking ranks in it eventually, but its not a class skill and her charisma's average, so I hadn't intended to do so. If no one else wants to I can dabble in it, but it won't be very effective.

GM questions:

I did end up fiddling with my ability scores a bit and adjusted my stats accordingly.

I haven't taken Weapon Finesse yet for a few reasons. Obviously, it'd be useful, but I didn't want Kilarra to be 'stuck' on finesse weapons. If she finds a longsword that's cool she'd use it in her main hand over a rapier that's near the same. Also, there's a lot of feats that I'm interested in for her in the future and when it came down to it I chose others over weapon finesse. Lastly, a few of the feats I'm interested in play off of Kilarra's distrust (if not hate of) the gods. She feels abandoned and shunned by them, and is distrustful of their followers and powers. Obviously she despises Achaekek. I wanted to make sure I established that (feat wise) before we start, instead of adding it in after. In summary: yes, I'm very likely to take weapon finesse, but how soon I'm unsure. I'm most likely to take it as a slayer talent next time I get one.

Loot: Sorry, I've never managed gear in a pbp before. I understand one person will take care of the loot we find and group goods, but just clarifying here: We won't keep track of our own held gear or expendables, but a single one of us will? So if I have two acid, for example, and I use one, I will update it on my character profile and then on the group item list, or just on my profile and the person in charge of loot will update it on the loot list?

Also, I'm more than alright with bookkeeping and would be happy to, but I've never used google sheets or anything, so I'm probably not the best choice. And obviously, I had some questions. Haha.

Marching Order: Kilarra's brave, bold, and considers herself canny, plus she's a trap finder. She would go first. If someone else's character would want to lead the way or adamantly hates having her up front, she'd let them go first (with a smug smirk on her face) but stick close behind so they don't get us all killed.

Combat: I also had a clarifying question about combat. When we start a new round I post my round actions (following the rules mentioned above, and with regard to my place in initiative), correct? Or do I wait for my turn in initiative order to post my round actions?

Female Kitsune Lunar Oracle 4 | HP 31/31 | AC21 T14 FF17 | CMD 13 | F+3 R+5 W+4 | Init +0 | Perc +7| Spells 1st: 7/7, 2nd: 4/4
Bobar:
Bear 1 | HP 31/31 | AC22 T12 FF20 | CMD 20 | F+6 R+6 W+2 | Init +2 | Perc +1

Hi, all! I'm SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS GAME. The Red Mantis Assassins are such cool foes to come up against, and I can't wait to start playing with you all!

Zeldana's pretty versatile, so she can fill any holes in the marching order that need it. She can also ask Bobar (her Bear animal companion) to occupy a certain place in the order.

CH-CH-CH-CH-CH-CHANGES!
I've modified Zeldana a little to help meet the party's needs. I've redistributed some skill ranks to put them in UMD and (as you've suggested, GM_Zek) Handle Animal. They're not class skills, but they're not too shabby as Zeldana's a Charisma based character.

Zek, I've also modified Bobar's skills, as I realized his scent ability is almost useless without some ranks in Survival. I've accordingly lowered Zeldana's Survival in the skill shuffle as well.

As for Spells, Zeldana has the following:

0- Create Water, Detect Magic, Detect Poison, Mending, Purify Food and Drink, Read Magic

1-Command, Cure Light Wounds, Obscuring Mist, Protection from Evil

2- Cure Moderate Wounds, Hold Person

Now, here's where things get interesting. Due to her Oracle Curse: Wrecking Mysticism, Zeldana can get the Magical Tail Feat instead of a Mystery Spell as well as taking it like a normal feat. This (as well as her racial traits) gives her the following Spell-Like Abilities:

3/day: Dancing Lights
2/day: Charm Person, Disguise Self, Misdirection

Now, I'd be willing to replace any spell of Zeldana's that isn't an enchantment spell. As a Kitsune she gains a +1 bonus to any spell of that school.

Any questions? Comments? Suggestions?

Hello one and all! Thank you GM for the invite, this looks to be a very interesting campaign :)

Talivar should indeed get a crossbow and a light mace just in case :) I seem to recall he had a good few hundred gold left so I may spend some of that on some consumables subject to approval.

Re marching order, Talivar hopes never to be in melee! So at the back :)

Re tracking limited uses for things, I've always used a Google spreadsheet for that. Does that work for you GM? Updating the tag tends to get tricky on mobile once there's a lot of information up there.

/Me heads off to read everyone's backgrounds.

Hey, just a few comments on prior relationships:

Anyone who was a part of Taldan nobility or followed the news in Oppara around six years ago probably knows Kilarra's name. She had a reputation for bringing disgrace to her family and only a year later was very publicly put on trial for the murder of her father, found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Her release is not public knowledge. (I think that's Talia, who would know of me; and possibly Vorya?)

Also, Talia: in your research into the Red Mantis Assassins you probably would have come across or recalled transcripts from Kilarra's trial where she insisted she was framed by a group of assassins who wear red mantis masks. Her tale was considered ludicrous and most of the details of her defence have mysteriously been misplaced, but it likely tickled your curiosity. Whether you would have been bold enough to petition to meet a well-known convicted killer in prison is up to you, but I imagine it would have been difficult to get a meeting with Kilarra. We've likely never met.

As mentioned in my backstory, Kilarra was purposely recruited to join the Mantisbane Pact for her foreknowledge of the group and general vengeance-driven insanity. She would have travelled to Iadara with a few other potential candidates from Taldor but it doesn't sound like I would have met any of you until arriving in Iadara and meeting all the other candidates together.

Lastly, it sounds like Vorya was keeping a low profile, but I might have heard of Talia or Talivar by reputation with my knowledge (local or nobility) if either of you had a particularly notable reputation, or are of noble blood.

Question for Vorya: Where did you operate when you were an assassin? Just curious if I might have heard of your handiwork from before I got arrested.

I've definitely never met or heard of Uruelleth or Zeldana before meeting them in Iadara.

It's always the one at the back who gets it in the movies!

Actually speaking about sneaking, my intention is to make Talivar situationally pretty good at that via points in stealth and invisibility. Sorcerer spells known are limited but I'll be going for a mix of blasts & utility. I want him to be flexible enough to blast where that makes sense and party buff while invisible where it doesn't :)

had experience).

Kilarra, I'm happy to see you picked, since you presented one of the absolute best backgrounds I've seen.

As for my own, I'm pretty sure there's nothing to link my background with anyone else's, but that's fine. I'll be a mystery for everyone at least for a little while.

He operated all over. His name is not likely to be known, but I think the 'Guild of Wonders' might be known to you (in some cases they 'sent a message'). So you might be aware of Vorya by reputation, but not by name. That works for me.

@ Zeldana - I'm very happy to leave the UMD to someone actually good at it. Haha.

@ Talivar - Let me know when/how you need me to add anything onto the spreadsheet when its ready.

@ Vorya - Cool! I've heard of the Guild of Wonders, and know some of your higher profile work, but not about any of the agents identities or codenames. So they have a professional/polished reputation, then? Certainly not sloppy. Respected (among assassins)? Feared? Something along those lines?

@Uruelleth - Wow, thanks! I'm glad you liked it.

I feel so lucky to be playing alongside such wonderful characters. I'm very grateful for being selected.

On Positioning:
Talia is probably happy to be in the middle. Its close enough so she can affect things with her hexes, but still be out of trouble.

On UMD:
I planned to pick it up long term with an INT headband (iirc its not a close skill though). If someone's taking it though, then all well and good.

On Backstory:

I agree that Talia probably knows of Kilarra, but wouldn't have met her in jail. Talia would have been worried (in the early stages) as to not arousing suspicion in secretly researching the Red Mantis. Therefore, wouldn't have done anything risky such as speak with a convicted killer. She probably doesn't link much with anyone else but thats fine. Anyone familiar with Taldor nobility / high society would know of her though.

On GM Questions:

Herolab tends to strike again RE the custom trait. I'll get that updated and added. Good catch also about the Accursed Hex. I initially didn't plan on taking Extra Hex and so assumed eventually I'd have to take the feat anyway as a tax. Recently though, I decided that I would have taken Extra Hex at 5 and therefore might as well swap the order so I can use something now. I'll probably pick up Misfortune.

Kilarra:
Okay, that works. I like your stat adjustments. You certainly don't have to go with a finesse build, it just looked like you were headed that way. Glad to hear your plan.

On loot: I'm fine if everyone wants to share the burden, such as updating their own consumables when they use them and such, but I would like one person to be 'in charge' to make sure everything stays up-to-date and that loot gets added as needed.

For combat: The first round of combat will be a bit strange as not everyone will act at the same time. After I roll initiative for everyone, those who act before the enemies (who I'll usually only do one roll for) will act. Then I'll resolve those players' actions, then the enemies' actions. After that, the players at the end of the round and the players from the top of the round will all go at once, since there aren't any enemies in between them at that point.

Actions will still be resolved in initiative order, but from that point forward, everyone can go ahead and post and don't have to wait for the person right before them in initiative to do so. There might have to be some minor adjustments to actions as a result, but it should make things as streamlined as possible for the pbp format. Remember that you'll also move your own character token on maps.

Sounds good on the weapons. Feel free to make adjustments to your gear before we start. Assuming it's an official Paizo item, it should be fine (as long as it costs 3,000 gp or less).

For loot, I think we're talking about the same thing. Google Sheets is Google's version of spreadsheets as far as I know. And I'm fine with people tracking their own consumables, it'll make things easier for whoever is overall in charge of loot.

@GM: I fixed the languages, so that's taken care of. Anything else you see?

Marching order: Uruelleth would definitely want to be in front, or at least second in line (knowing the advantage of having a trap spotter in the lead). If you really need a rear guard, he'll do in a pinch, since he has decent speed and can charge through difficult terrain.

Spell selection: I'll never be able to field particularly high save DCs, so I plan on taking most buff spells. I'll definitely appreciate suggestions.

@Kilarra- The Guild of Wonders has been around for hundreds of years so I'd say they have a good reputation. They also have some limits (they don't kill clergy of Abadar and Calsitra, for example).

@GM, Yeah, skill points!

Also, can you make a gameplay thread for dotting?

As for marching order, Vorya would be point man, I think.

Updates look good. You may want to stick your background into your profile for easy reference.

I prefer for the first post to be a gameplay post. I know it's a minor thing, but I think it looks more professional. In the meantime, you can 'list' the discussion thread and it'll show up in your wishlist. It'll let you know when there are new posts, similar to the campaigns tab.

Since Vorya will have reach with his glaive, I think Kilarra and Uruelleth would probably be a little more in front, but I can adjust that if you all would prefer a bit different order. I'm sure Uruelleth will want to be able to charge.

-----

So for marching order, I've got:

Single File
Kilarra
Uruelleth
Vorya
Bobar
Zeldana
Talia
Talivar

Two-by-two
Kilarra & Uruelleth
Vorya & Bobar
Zeldana & Talia
Talivar

Let me know if there need to be any adjustments. Talivar is required to be in the back, though. (Just kidding. Not really... sort of. *maniacal laugh*)

-----

For loot, were you going to go ahead and track that, Talivar? I have a loot sheet if you would like or you can use your own. I'll add a link to it just below the campaign title once we're settled on the matter.

*Dramatic "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"*

But seriously, Zeldana and Bobar in the back. Always. Nobody let Talivar and Talia stick their squishy asses out for the Red Mantis to sneak-attack-murder.

Haha. In that case, perhaps something like this:

Single File
Kilarra
Uruelleth
Vorya
Talia
Talivar
Bobar
Zeldana

Two-by-two
Kilarra & Uruelleth
Vorya & Talia
Talivar & Bobar

Unless there's anything else particularly pressing to discuss, I'll go ahead and get the opening gameplay post up within the next couple hours. Go ahead and nail down items, spells, etc. You'll want them to all be set before the first combat encounter.

Agreed. Casters are too easy to get knifed/eaten by oozes.

Vorya is fine being third in order.

I've done a number of minor things: Gave Talivar some Tangleburn bags (the DC on those is nasty at this level) and some simple weapons, some masterwork tools for his knowledge skills (i.e. books) Not useful in combat but handy otherwise. I also set up his resource and gold tracking spread sheet, and adjusted his tagline.

No worries. I just know that I reference them frequently, so it'll be good to have.

Everyone: Is there a consensus yet on who's tracking loot? I don't mind everyone helping out on the issue, but I do think it's best for one of you to be in charge. You'll get your name attached to the list and everything. : )

Thank you, Vorya! I'll add the loot table I have to the quick links above. If you would prefer to use your own, just let me know.

For everyone else (assuming Vorya decides to use the loot table I add): Please go ahead and add your starting gear to your section of the loot list.

No complaints from me. The info link above does have a few plot related things, if that's what you mean.

Sorry to hear that, Zeldana. I definitely echo Vorya and Talivar's thoughts. If you don't have access to Word, Google Docs can also work really well. There's even a smartphone app. If you find yourself completely without anything else to use, you could also copy what you've written before previewing or submitting it, then you can just paste it back if Paizo decides it doesn't like your post.

Never really done group PBP. Is it appropriate to answer back right away or should I let others post first in idle conversations?

Yes, it's perfectly fine. There is a bit of finesse involved, like if it's a group conversation and everyone needs to contribute, but (generally speaking) there's nothing wrong with responding right away. That's especially true if the question is specifically directed at you.

Yes, and sometimes a player can post ahead of you that can change the sound of your response. It happens (like it did for me just now). You get used to it, and you can always use that edit button to smooth it out if you catch it in time.

No worries on the short post, Talia. It'll probably take a bit to get used to everyone's usual schedule/posting times. I'll hold off on updating us for a bit, but feel free to continue bantering.

Yeah, liking it a lot. Finalizing the party must have been brutal, but I think nearly all my favourite submissions got selected.

@ Zeldana - Nice phrasing with the monarchs! Obviously, it's perfect for your character, but it also ended up linking perfecting with Uruelleth's.

@ Uruelleth - Nice job linking Uruelleth with Zeldana. You are on the ball!

Loving the tie-ins, guys!

@ GM - Sounds good.

Good to hear. It's not always possible (I think) to have a diverse group in every sense of the word, but I definitely wanted to have a diverse group at least in some ways.

Speaking of diverse, I can already tell that we all have a wide range of posting times. As such, I want to stick to posting around the same time to give everyone roughly 24 hours between my posts. Hopefully that will give everyone a chance to contribute, especially to situations such as the one everyone's in currently.

It worked out yesterday where I was able to move us along last night during my normal updating time (12:30am-1:30am eastern). I can occasionally move us along at other times, but, like I said, I want to make sure everyone has a chance to post.

A whisper to one of the other characters? You certainly could do so. Actions have consequences, though. For instance, some of the monarchs might find it rude.
