I think I'm going to have to sleep on what to do this turn--with Emi attacking, I'm not sure if I can get my Colour Spray into a position that'll catch a few derro but not one of us.

Emileva Mavrakis |

Well Tassira, you have initiative over Emi so your spell would go off first. If you moved to square 9,8 you could cast safe from AoOs. Diagonal between where Nebbin is and Emi is just about to be would catch derros 2 and 3. If they fail their saves it takes both out of combat and gets us to the necromancer faster, which is a good thing.
If derro 3 doesn't save he won't be able to attack Emi next round if she hasn't killed him.
I'd say it's a pretty good return on a 1st level spell.

DM Luke |

Tassira and Emileva, you two are the last to act in the surprise round. So I'll take the first half of each of your actions (the moves). Let me know if you want to adjust where your moves end.
Also the derros have spell resistance, so Tassira when you make that attack go ahead and add those rolls.

DM Luke |

Also, before we get to Tassira's next round and the execution of that burning hands, I want to be sure you remember that there's alot of alchemical equipment on the tables that they're hiding behind. Hmmm.... let there be alchemical gear!

Emileva Mavrakis |

Hm, the last time it was very clear why Emi moved too far, but I'm not seeing why her move this time was more than 20'?
In any case I'm getting ride of medium armor after this is over. The extra protection isn't worth not being able to go anywhere.

Kayleigh Fairwind |

Hm, the last time it was very clear why Emi moved too far, but I'm not seeing why her move this time was more than 20'?
I think this time Emi got burned by the surprise round single action and/or couldn't move in a straight line to charge.
Well, if you switch armor you won't have to worry about outrunning the monsters any more...you'll just have to outrun Kayleigh. :)

DM Luke |

I don't save the old version of the maps, but I think Emi started at (5,7). So the path (I think) I had charted for her first move action was:
NE to (6,8) total cost 5
N to (6,9) total cost 10
E to (7,9) total cost 15
from there, (8,8) would be her second diagonal which is too far at 25. (8,9) is/was occupied by Tassira.
In any case I'm getting ride of medium armor after this is over. The extra protection isn't worth not being able to go anywhere.
Well it might also be a factor of running a relatively treasure-poor game. :/ Upgrades to equipment are probably past due as 4th level characters. If you guys survive this little ditty a loot roundup/liquidation will probably be needed.
That is, if Tassira leaves any of it unburnt. lol

Emileva Mavrakis |

Okay I think I get it. I had thought diagonal movement only cost an extra 5' if the 2 squares were consecutive, not just any two squares within the total move.
Yeah, Emi has a couple of nice items but they're kind of random and she hasn't had occasion to use them so far. She only bought some new clothes because she lost everything when her old flat was burgled.
She does had a few hundred gold tucked away. But it belongs to Vencarlo and she has a big ole <3 CRUSH <3 on him so she'd never use any of it except for its intended purpose.

Kayleigh Fairwind |

Three straight rolls of 20 on attack rolls for Emi?
"I'll have what she's having!"

Kayleigh Fairwind |

Hopefully the results of Kayleigh's natural 1 won't be THIS BAD.

Kayleigh Fairwind |

Stupid Mondays. Somehow Nebbin snuck in his post before I got around to making mine. In retrospect, it doesn't make much sense for Kayleigh to try to hop up onto the table to make room for Nebbin when Nebbin already took his actions for the round.

DM Luke |

Shout-out to Spiderbeard and Dragoncat. Your characters are up.

Regeris Smythe |

Good lord that was one hell of an outage.

DM Luke |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Ya, that was the longest one I can remember. Good to have our game back.

Nebbin Elsbet |

Dang. I didn't pick up on that possibility with the tail at all. Creepy!
Well done, GM and Tassira!
(Sorry I didn't react to it in character; was posted as I was posting and didn't notice it until now.)

DM Luke |

No to the burning grease. To me, the compelling point in that argument is that the spell description should say if it's flammable.
Thanks Nebbin. In this format sometimes you have to keep your powder dry a really long time :) I definitely aim to creep.

Emileva Mavrakis |

I wonder what happened to take the server down for so long? I remember periods when it was unreliable and getting a post up was agony that lasted longer. But I don't think I've seen a complete shutdown last more than a couple of days before.

Regeris Smythe |

Annd down for a couple of more days. Fingers crossed it stays up.
Usually when things explode this spectacularly it means an upgrade went wrong.

DM Luke |

Agreed. And where I come from it also means somebody's probably getting fired :(

DM Luke |

Oh, and while we're able to post. Regeris and Emileva are up.

Kayleigh Fairwind |

Gotta give a shoutout to Luke for the pic of the golem: no idea how you found an image of an old man with his face half caved in.
I'll most likely be without internet access 'til Tuesday afternoon, so if the forums stay up and if you'd like to keep things rolling, feel free to bot Kayleigh as needed. Her priorities are: 1) Help deal with the golem and 2) Keep an eye on Nebbin's health, perhaps doing a positive energy channel if a lot of damage is dealt to the party.
Happy Labor Day to folks in the U.S.!

Kayleigh Fairwind |

Yes--and in Canada, too! And anywhere else it's celebrated!

DM Luke |

Emi, on your damage line for the falchion you have "+9 +6" as the mods. How does that breakdown? The closest I can get is:
+9 (2-H Bull's str) + 2 power attack.

Emileva Mavrakis |

Emi's now at +4 BAB so Power Attack goes from -1 Attack & +2 Damage to -2 Attack & +4 Damage. She's also using a two-handed weapon so she gets +50% on Power Attack Damage. That's the correct reading right?
You can make exceptionally deadly melee attacks by sacrificing accuracy for strength.
Prerequisites: Str 13, base attack bonus +1.
Benefit: You can choose to take a –1 penalty on all melee attack rolls and combat maneuver checks to gain a +2 bonus on all melee damage rolls. This bonus to damage is increased by half (+50%) if you are making an attack with a two-handed weapon, a one handed weapon using two hands, or a primary natural weapon that adds 1-1/2 times your Strength modifier on damage rolls. This bonus to damage is halved (–50%) if you are making an attack with an off-hand weapon or secondary natural weapon.
When your base attack bonus reaches +4, and every 4 points thereafter, the penalty increases by –1 and the bonus to damage increases by +2.
You must choose to use this feat before making an attack roll, and its effects last until your next turn. The bonus damage does not apply to touch attacks or effects that do not deal hit point damage.

DM Luke |

yep, sure is. I never paid enough attention to power attack details to realize it scaled like that. Thanks!

Emileva Mavrakis |

Power Attack is so ridiculously good I'm almost embarrassed to use it.
Nebbin and Kayleigh, it's been a while since I've had such bad dice for so long that I've posted a string of my latest terrible rolls, but I've been there and done it and I feel for you.

DM Luke |

I’ll dmpc Regeris when I get home from practice later tonight. We need to move on past this fight!

Regeris Smythe |

GAHH! I swore I posted! I thought the lack of activity was on others, not me. Sorry about that GM.

DM Luke |

Hey guys, we've had a bit of a slow down of late, and I wanted to take this opportunity to assess everyone's continued interest in the game. I know we've been in combat pretty much constantly for a long stretch, and that stretch is coming to a close. This is effectively the BBEG encounter sequence for the first adventure in the AP, and I didn't want to cheat it by cutting corners. As we wind it down, I'm starting to mix in material from the next chapter (Seven Days to the Grave), elements from the House on Hook Street, as well as my usual blend of customizations.
For my own part, I'm 100% for pushing into chapter 2 and beyond, and am pretty juiced about the direction of the campaign. You're all great role-players and I've enjoyed this mix more than any game I've played in recent years. But if you have any reservations about continuing the game, if you're too pressed by real life or anything of that sort, I don't want anyone to feel bad about exiting stage left. I promise you all there would be no hard feelings - but I don't promise not to kill your characters and make a revenge golem out of them! :)
Oh yes, and I suppose I should warn anyone who's still in: the next chapter is going to get darker (if you aren't already in the know). I went out and bought Horror Adventures recently for a reason... the cannibalism, child exploitation, prostitution, racism and necromancy in chapter 1 just didn't quite scratch the itch!

I'm still having fun; there have been games I've just been waiting for them to die, but this is not one of those.
Even this combat, I think it's only dragging bit because unlike me, dice-bot is clearly NOT invested in our game. If Nebbin could roll above single digits, this could have been over by now. (I probably could also back up, to let more people get at Cabbagehead, though with Emi blinded, that's our other big hitter).
That said, I do think upping our treasure level would also solve some of those dice-bot problems and ... well, I do love loot.

Emileva Mavrakis |

I'm definitely in for the long haul. This campaign is one of my core three that I would never quit. Each one scratches a different itch. This one for noirish horror grimdark Sin City play. RoTRL for high heroics, destiny calls stuff. Jade Regent for light comedy adventure a la The Princess Bride.
In the past couple of months I've been promoted, which also meant relocating to a different office that substantially increased my commute time. I can have 12 hour days now, which has made updating more difficult and my posts shorter than in the past. I've been mulling dropping a couple of games to ease the load, but not this one.
As for treasure, I suppose we could use tad more but I don't tend to think about treasure too much. I really don't have any firm ideas about where we should be with it.
I'd also like to add that you've done a great job running this campaign Luke. The extras like the web page are really fantastic to have, even if they don't always get a comment from me.

Kayleigh Fairwind |

I'm still 100% invested in this campaign.
As for treasure, didn't we lose a big chunk by paying down Carawyn's drug debt?

Regeris Smythe |

I adore this game and absolutely want to continue. It's been a rough summer but I'm back into a better routine. I have a bad habit of checking posts when I don't have time to post, so I lose the notification and forget to post later. I'll clean up my act.

Kayleigh Fairwind |

FWIW, I tend to do a check on all my games every day when i sit down to post. It's the best way to not miss something, especially as the new post notifications do sometimes disappear too.
Oh, the irony of this post! (Since your character's been up since Thursday....) ;)
