Don't worry it's DMing that's hard if anything play by post is easier to DM because it's harder to be distracted and you have time to think.

Also there is a auto log of everything that happens.

See, I thought that same thing when I tried to DM a pbp. I actually found it harder because I couldn't just throw combat at them to make it fun, it has to be a lot more thought out because its 75% roleplaying in PBP. It takes the same amount of dedication to do a PBP, just some of it in a different way.

It looks like Daniel, that you have some good PBP experience, so between that and your years as DM you should be fine. However, here are some guides on DMing PBP if you are interested

Hey thanks Wofguy!! I am always looking for tips and such to help in a game.

Dotting for Interest. I'll be running my own game in addition to (hopefully) playing. I've had no luck getting into a PbP yet. Working on a Dwarf!

I am Jakob I stand 6'2" and am broad shouldered and strong. I am able to take on the weight of what may come for Torag has blessed me as a Cleric for battle in his service. I humbly submit myself to you and your quest to tame the stolen lands. I do so for the honor of Torag and for the chance to spread his glory.

backstory:

Port Ice, on the southern bank of the Lake of Mists and Veils in northern Brevoy, is a refuge for ruffians and lake pirates. Jakob was born here in the slums near the docks where it seemed no one ever escaped. His father, George, was a broad shouldered strong fellow who sometimes worked at the docks. That is when someone was desperate enough in the need of help because Geroge's temper was well known and always got him into trouble. Too many times George fought just to see another man fall. When George wasn't working and fighting he was drinking and fighting, Drink didn't do George's temper any good it only fueled it to white hot, which spelled disaster for Jakob. George was abusive both physically and mentally and Jakob bared the scars to prove it so. Jakob took to spending more time on the streets and less time at home to escape his father's wrath. It finally became a full time occupation for the young lad.

Living a life on the streets wasn't what Jakob wanted but it was the only way he knew how to escape. Of course Jakob was running with the wrong crowd. They always seemed to find trouble no matter what stealing a little bread here running a few errands for the local riff-raff whatever it took to survive. At thirteen he was caught trying to steal food from a vendor in the market, the boy was never really good at being stealthy. The man who caught Jakob was not the vendor nor was he just an ordinary man. His name was Jasper and he was a cleric of Torag. The cleric did not just turn him over to the authorities, but actually took him back to the temple and talked with and listened to Jakob. Jasper took the time to find out why Jakob was stealing and in the end Jasper offered Jakob an opportunity to live and work at the temple instead of living a life on the street. Why was Jasper doing this for Jakob when there were so many other children on the streets living the same life? Jasper always said is that Torag showed him the spark that was within Jakob.

Jakob eagerly jumped at the opportunity it gave him a chance to escape not only his father but the streets as well and to him that was the only thing that mattered. At first Jakob simply helped clean around the temple, the ground, and fix meals for the clerics, priests, and monks that lived there, But Jasper found that spark of divine favor in Jakob and he watched it blossom. Soon Jakob was being taught the way of Torag in healing and battle. Jakob was a strong student in the art of war and defense. His healing arts were a little lacking but not bad and his wisdom grew seemingly on a daily basis. Torag's favor was definitely upon the boy.

The years passed and Jakob continued to learn and grow and finally ended up becoming a full cleric and a fine young man. A man who never forgot where he came from nor the god that pulled him from that life.

In the spring that Jakob was nineteen, Jasper told him that a journey awaited him that would help spread the faith of Torag and expand his knowledge and abilities even further. There was an opportunity to explore the stolen lands to the south and if successful a new settlement would be created. With this new settlement a chance to build a new Temple to Torag and spread the faith. Jakob did not hesitate in accepting the request but immediately got his weapons, tower shield, and supplies ready. Jakob packed his suppllies on his riding horse and was set to depart, but first he wanted one more chance at making things right with his father.

He had tried many times before but was always turned away by anger and fists. His father never gave up drink, but it seemed to control him. To his father there was only the bottle and nothing else mattered. Jakob could easily defend himself now being even bigger than his father. He could have easily taken him down a peg or two and gave him a taste of what Jakob grew up knowing. Jakob could have but he never hit his father in any of their altercations. When Jakob got to the house his father was on the front porch almost as if he was waiting for him.

"Well it be lookin like you be takin a trip der sonny", his father slurred. "Well I hope you get what you be deserving after abandonin me like you did".

Jakob just stood there looking at the man. He felt sorry for him. Jakob wanted to succeed at settling the stolen lands. He wanted an opportunity to make something of himself. He wanted to have a family one day and be the father he never had. And this adventure seemed to be the very best thing to accomplish everything.

Jakob is strong and determined he will fight to the end for his party. He doesn't believe in abuse and will step in when ever he sees it regardless of the consequences. His objectives are to spread the faih of Torag and create a new life for himself.

Areanna Delante is a character I made for Kingmaker a ways back. Game ended before it ever got going. Only got one battle and the DM said it wasn't in the original book so, I'm still in the dark as to what happens or was suppose to happen.

I would like to have another shot at this AP and since my freetime has opened considerably and all other games I was in have died out, I was hoping for a new go.

All the specs and other details are in the profile, I can update the character in anyway you see necessary otherwise she is built for Kingmaker.

Thanks for considering. If I need to drop the archetype due to it not being core material, then I'm okay with that, just let me know.

I've added my equipment (most of it anyway)and decided not to change much in backstory, as it is simply that: a backstory.

I don't suppose you'd accept a Drow Wizard? ^^

Liberty's Edge

LOL...Drow no, wizard, yes!! Sorry I am trying to keep this fairly simple so I am looking to use only core classes and races.

I've added some personality notes to Brigid's profile. Hopefully you'll check it out. I'm going for the strong, silent type, and will focus my posts on describing her actions in a way that shows her personality, rather than coming right out and say it.

Thanks for the consideration!

Cyrioul Fasar has come forward to present himself to the Swordlords of Restov as a capable spell caster, scholar, chronicler of exploration, and supporter of other explorers.

Just a few hours left for anyone still interested. I will try to get my decision out tomorrow, then we can go over your characters and prepare for your journey to the stolen land!!

Alas. ^^ My inspiration has been going a bit outside the Core lately.

I shall just wish everyone good luck, and to those chosen, a fine game.

Droviz, could you go with the drow-ish build of the half-elf presented in the ARG? You trade your low-light vision, bonus Skill Focus, and second favored class for darkvision + light blindness & drow spell-like abilities.

Background of Rhaskos the Lesser:

Rhaskos the Lesser was born in the City State of Tymon to his father, Rhaskos the Greater, a blooded warrior of the arena and a Eliza Surtova a noblewoman and diplomatic envoy from the nation of Brevoy Campaign Trait: Bastard
Like most children born in the City of Tymon, Rhaskos saw his first kill at an early age. At six years old, young Rhaskos watched his father Rhaskos the Greater, slay his 76th man in the Arena of Aroden. He heard the roars of the crowd and the screams for blood and the chanting of his father’s name. It was at that moment, which Rhaskos swore that one day he too would stand on the sand of the arena and listen as his name was chanted and valor was piled upon him.

As the son of a blooded warrior life was good for young Rhaskos. His father was nearing his 100th victory in the arena and it was rumored that he would soon be challenging Ullorth Ungin for the title of Champion. At the age of fourteen Eliza was recalled to Brevoy. Though his father and Eliza had never married they loved each other, but Rhaskos knew his place was to remain in Tymon. Six months later Rhaskos began his training at the Valknar Gladiatorial College. He learned horsemanship, the blade and fighting as a team. For four years Rhaskos studied, practiced and trained. And then it all fell apart. Cavalier 1

Rhaskos had just turned eighteen and his father had Rhaskos the Greater had beaten his 100th opponent earning the right to face Ullorth Ungin for the title of Champion and claim leadership of Tymon. Sadly it was not meant to be. Under the hot sun Rhaskos the Greater faced down Ungin Half-man. The priest of Gorum had said a blessing upon the sands and the fight began. As each blow fell upon Rhaskos’s father, the young gladiator watched with shock. Each thrust; each parry seemed to fall with hesitation and sluggishness. This was not the fighter that young Rhaskos knew. Bewildered, the son watched as his father was struck; once, twice and then a third time. Rhaskos the Greater fell to his knees, hearts blood wetting the sands. As silence filled the Arena of Aroden Ullorth raised his Gladius in victory, before driving it down with a killing blow.

Shocked and dismayed and the death of his father Rhaskos the Lesser feel into a melancholy. This was not what was supposed to have happened. His father was to have become the Champion, with glory and riches heaped upon him not dead on the sands of the arena. The next day the debtors came. As was law, having challenged the reigning Champion of Tymon and lost all property was forfeit. Rhaskos watched as his house and what few belonging he had of his fathers were stripped from him. Only that what he had earned for himself he was left with. Knowing not what to do Rhaskos did the only thing he could think of. He gathered his meager belongings and his mount Virtus and left Tymon.

For the next three months Rhaskos slowly made his way to Brevoy. His father was dead, what few friends he had continued to train at Valknar College and Tymon was filled memories he would rather forget. At least in Brevoy he knew his mother had allies and he had a chance to make a new start. As he made his way towards Brevoy, Rhaskos found something that he had never expected; the need for vengeance. Each night along the roads and streams of the River Kingdoms Rhaskos would pray to Gorum that he might one day return and upon the sands face the man that killed his father. Religious Trait (Gorum): Veteran of Battle

Once Rhaskos reached Brevoy he spent several weeks locating his Mother. Much to his dismay he learned from her that the Noble House of Surtova would not recognize his birthright. While his mother may have been a noble, his father was a gladiator from another city-state. To have been declared as part of the Surtova line would bring nothing but shame upon the noble house. However, Eliza was if nothing else a loving mother, who still had powerful contacts from her time as a diplomat. Eliza knew that Brevoy would soon be sending explores to map the Stolen Lands, and with a few well-placed words was able to ensure that her son would have an opportunity to join one of the expeditions. Having done all that she could, Eliza gave her son her blessing, and a promise that if he did well during the expedition she would do what she could to have him recognized as a legitimate heir of her line. It was with that, that Rhaskos once again set off into the wilderness, towards a small trading outpost know as Oleg’s.

Intentions and Build:

When I build a character, the first thing I do is look at where the character is coming from, how he would play a role in a group and how I would like to see him develop as the campaign goes on. First off a little about me. I am in eight PbP's right now, and I maintain a good posting amount in each of them. Since I got into PbP's about 8 months ago I have gotten hooked. I like the deeper character development that you can achieve, that often seems to fail at larger tabletop games. I have 1,300 posts and I'm consistent. I tell you this because players and DM's can occasionally disappear, and it can be disheartening to the group. I have never ditched a group, and I have no intentions of starting now.

Onto my character. Mechanically, Rhaskos is a Cavalier with the Beast Rider Archetype. He is built to take advantage of the Performance Combat rules from Ultimate Combat. While most Cavaliers tend to fight from horseback Rhaskos will mostly fight on the ground, with his Beast assisting him in combat. The good thing about this build is that the Performance Combat stuff won't come up until later. I did this for two reasons, one its more effective as you get into higher levels and two, as a new GM to PbP I don't want to overwhelm you with a bunch of extra stuff right off. He can us either sword and shield, or two handed weapons as necessary for combats.

Roleplay wise Rhaskos has several desires/hooks built into his character.
-He is a Bastard of House Surtova
-Father died during a bid for rulership via the Law of Succession in Tymon
-He trained at the Valknar Gladiatorial College and Gladiators of Tymon are often hired out to other nations of the River Kingdoms for the right price.
-Rhaskos wants power, but for a very specific reason. Being recognized as a heir of House Surtova, earning the title of bloodied and any other honors or titles that he can obtain are all part of his desire to one day return to Tymon and unseat Ullorth Ungin "the Half-man". (While I know the campaign won't move in this direction, I thought that it would still be quite interesting to see how it might play out as a new "nation" develops.

Anyhow, thanks for considering my character. I know I barely squeezed in on the cut-off, but trust me, I had been kicking around ideas for this character ever since I asked you about the Dwarf Oracle of Stone!

Awaiting your decision

"Oh this calls for a song!"

*clears throat* *Strums the lute*

"We Drink to our youth. To days come and gone. For the Kingmaker recruitment is just about done."

8Strum the lute*

"We'll clean out the Stolen lands and restore what we own. With our blood and our steel we will take back our home."

*Another Strum*

"So rise great settlers for a kingdom you bring. For the day of your journey we will drink and we'll sing."

*strum Strum*

"We are the children of Brevoy and we fight all our lives. And when the gods beckon everyone of us dies."

*Strum*

"But this land is ours and we'll see it wiped clean. From the scourge that has sullied our hopes and our dreams."

And a bow.

Brigid listens to the tune, a fire in her green eyes dancing in memory. Her bow in hand, she moves her fingers along the well-worn wood grains that has soaked in the sweat and toil of years of training. A light smile plays upon her lips as the words hearken back to a more innocent time, when the yearning of the glories of youth were still fresh and unsullied.

For a moment, her eyes meet Areanna's, and she nods in a gesture of thanks for the music and hope of a brighter future. Then, after their shared moment, her countenance darkens and the walls she had built around her come back into force. She leans forward and touches her brow to her bow.

I give a pleasant smile to Brigid. I squirm with excitement as I touch bows with her. I have lifted the mood of yet another attentive patron.

If I am recruited, there will be a LOT of singing lol. It's what this character does....and shoots things.

Liberty's Edge

heheh..my bad...got caught out without internet access...so a few could have got in under the wire. Officially closing the recruitment for this AP. Thanks everyone who applied...now comes the hard part!!

"I wish you wisdom and clarity in your decision Sir Daniel Stewart. The wise coordinator of the expedition. I hope for the opportunity to write songs and tell tales of the expedition from a personal perspective."

I'm a suck up an I ain't ashamed to say it. Regardless, good luck to everyone. There's a lot of good choices here and as much as I'd love to get back to being a player again, I won't feel bad if I'm not picked.

I love a lady who is not to proud to beg

Liberty's Edge

Ok..well after a very difficult evening sorting through all the submissions, I have finally selected our merry band. It was a tough choice! Everyone put fort a great effort, and I want to thank you all for wanting to be part of my game. I wish I could take you all!!
I based my choices on several factors – completeness of character (which all were!), type of character and niche it would fill, the experience of the players (or lack…I wanted some who were new and a few ‘old hands’). Finally I just tried to see which characters had…well…the most character. Some jumped off the screen at me, and others I passed over a few times before they spoke to me.
Ok…enough of my blathering, here are the players I have chosen. As you may notice I added an extra…see I told you it was too had to decide!! So a 7 player party!! I hope I know what the heck I am getting myself into!

Brigid auf Whitehelm - NG Human Fighter
Nubbawub Sodtopper - CG Gnome Ranger
Svetlana Orlovsky - CG Human Cleric of Calistria

Again thank you everyone, and if we need a replacement, I will keep you all in mind (I did make up an alternates list)

Daniel Stewart

Thank you for including me in your campaign. Nice to see we have so many front liners.

Don't worry having one extra player it keeps the post count going and is a buffer against attrition form real life.

"Sweet Mother of Shelyn! Seven members? Just be prepared to step up the encounters some cause groups that big will mow stuff over. On the other hand, gives some of us the chance to take such matters a little less seriously and add more character. Should be an interesting adventure. I raise my glass to a fruitful and glorious expedition. Welcome aboard everyone else and thanks especially for having me. I can't wait to write our epic tale and sing songs of our bravery. Cheers!" I raise my glass to toast the lucky explorers.

Alas, it seems I will have to wait for my own story to begin. I shall continue to wait my turn and continue to pass on my second hand stories.

I pray your story is grand enough to be told for all time!

Svetlana winks knowing at the DM, as if an unacknowledged bargain was fulfilled.

OOC: 7 is a lot, but I agree that gives us a chance to focus on RP rather than optimizing in combat.

Where's that IC thread? Let's roll/role!

Liberty's Edge

Ok..I will see the party over in the discussion thread, where we will go over your characters, the back story and any concerns/ideas you might have. See you all there!

Well, good luck to all. I would have like to to some RP with Svetlana..^^

May I ask if there are way to improve my character for next recruitment, or if it was just bad luck i was not picked up? Gm have to do a choice, I do understand and respect that, and it's never easy I guess.

Liberty's Edge

Hadin, you were one of the characters that I kept coming back to. It was a very hard choice, you had a good balance of skills, and an interesting background as well, but the other fighters seemed to 'click' better with their stories and such. You are my first replacement for a warrior, if we should need one. Good luck in future adventures!

Have fun all!

Actually, the list is deceptive, in truth my character seems like the only true front liner - as both Brigid auf Whitehelm & Nubbawub Sodtopper look to be more oriented toward ranged combat, though that could of course change as they level.

Liberty's Edge

Ok..had a player drop out and am looking for a new one. The group is looking for a ranger or druid. I will give this forum 2 days to submit, then look at what submissions we have. I would like a quick turnover so we can get back to the game. Take a look at our gameplay thread for an idea of what has gone on so far.
Thanks

Elf ranger right here. Would like to play. Was made for a kingmaker but wasn't chosen.
Probably need to update a few things.
How far in are you guys?
Edit: not far I see. Cool. Fixing my character in the next few hrs.

Have edited to for your game.
I decided to go switch hitter so he could be a secondary melee combatant as well as archery as I noticed you might be short on the front line.

I'll bid for a position here! Like Orodreth, was made for another Kingmaker campaign but wasn't chosen. I think we were actually made for the same campaign, in fact.

Looking for a ranger or a druid, I imagine you'll see a lot of fairly similar submissions. Good luck wading through all of us!

Yes I do remember that name actually. Good luck man.

Liberty's Edge

The background, at this moment, is not too important, as I will need to tweak it a bit to fit into the ongoing game. We could also look at a wilderness build rogue as well...but the party really wants someone with good wilderness skills.

My survival(and tracking) as well as knowledge(nature) will be pretty high with the traits i have.
Favoured enemy starting with human helps alot since i imagine most of the bandits will be human(as well as with helping build a kingdom i imagine).
As well as the dealing with bandits trait.
And when i get favoured terrain that's a huge bonus to stealth, survival, perception, knowledge(geography) and initiative when i'm in it.
Hope those are all pluses for me :)

Liberty's Edge

Yup, they sure are!! Most of the party has taken to ranged weapons, so they may need another upfront fighting type...

Hoping i get to carve it up with my Elven Curve Blade. Always wanted to use one but never had the right character. :)
Gone with some better armour than I had before also.

That -4 armor check penalty will hurt your stealth a good deal, but I suppose if you really need to be stealthy, you can undo the armor and go without.

Yes true. I could get lighter armour but I figured tank was a bit more important. Hopefully I don't get caught by a group of hungry wolves if I'm scouting or something. It's not too late to change stuff if I need to I suppose. :)

@Orodreth: A tank is a very good thing, your logic is sound here.

I hate to do a lot of me-too since Orodreth and Damen are such similar builds, but Damen can switch roles fairly easily. I've tweaked the build bit, switching feats to make him more competent and survivable at melee. No CON bonus may be something I come to regret, but I figure that's why the gods gave us clerics. Lighter armor for scouting/skirmishing/making clerics even more important can always be kept with the saddlebags.

At the moment it is just you two applying and given the want to get a solid party member soon, I suspect our DM Daniel may decide between you two. Not sure how he is going to do it, build wise you are similar and both good in your own ways - I'm not sure whether it will come down to the background of the character or just flipping a coin.

Maybe we should fight it out, Kirk/Spock style. Set to the same music.

I'd... probably not like the way that ends.

Orodreth just needs better friends. He never had any helpful ones his whole life pretty much.

*flashes a coin into his hand momentarily before making it disappear*
