Absalom Station Job Board Posting #00A26583B9 wrote:

Crew Needed - Single Journey - Combat Experience Preferred

Captain Heerdon Ross of Ross Shipping is hiring crewmembers for the inaugural run of the newest ship in the Ross Shipping fleet, the Inscrutable. Positions are open for first officer, pilot, and science officer; a number of engineering and gunnery positions are also available. Positions are expected to be short-term and variable in nature.

Interested applicants can interview with Captain Ross at Starsailor’s Rest Inn & Restaurant between the hours of 2000 and 2200 while this advertisement is posted.

Combat experience is strongly preferred.

Just One Run is a homebrewed Starfinder adventure for 4-5 3rd level PCs within the Pact Worlds setting. It’s short and sweet and hopefully a good test run for you (if you’re new to Starfinder, new to PbP, or if you’ve trying out a new character concept) and some good PbP GM experience for me.

Character Creation Rules

  • Characters start at 3rd level. You will not level up during the course of this adventure, so don’t build for the future.
  • Characters start with 4,000 credits each and may purchase equipment of 5th level or lower.
  • Any character or equipment options from any Paizo-published Starfinder source are permitted. This includes the Core Rulebook, Alien Archive, and the first three volumes of the Dead Suns AP.
  • This adventure will feature starship combat, so be sure to prepare your character for one or more starship combat roles (the "first officer" position in the advertisement refers to the captain role in starship combat).

Submitting a Character
If you’d like to submit a character, include the following items in your post, each within its own spoiler tag (I like a good clean thread):

  • A stat block (please put it in-thread, no outside links).
  • A brief character description. I don’t have a terribly high standard here (short adventure, fairly on-rail), but I would like your character to be more than a gun with legs.
  • Your character’s responses to Captain Ross’ interview questions (see below).
  • A rough estimation of your experience with tabletop RPGs, Starfinder, and PbP gaming. I won’t base my selection on your response in this section, I just want to know where my (potential) players are at.

No need to create an avatar yet, but if you do, please be consistent as to not confuse me. If you have any questions about your build, this thread is a great place to ask; I love answering questions.

Deadline
Well, we’re kinda in the middle of the holiday season here, so I’m gonna leave this hanging out there a bit longer than I normally would. Recruitment will be open for two weeks, closing on Sunday, December 31st, at midnight CST. What a way to bring in the new year.

As you enter the Starsailor’s Rest, it isn’t difficult to locate Captain Ross, a tall human woman with a commanding air, sharing a drink with a hooded figure. As you approach the table, the Captain’s companion rises quickly and leaves, allowing you to see the face of a female half-orc as she brushes past you. As soon as you sit down, an aggressively pleasant Captain Ross starts to pepper you with questions:

“Greetings! Thank you much for stopping by. What compels you to apply for a position aboard the Inscrutable?”

“How many ships have you served on, and for how long?”

“I’m concerned about piracy around the Diaspora. How good are you in a scrap?”

“Do you have any ethical reservations, moral consternations, legal restrictions, or biological incompatibilities with the shipping and handling of cargo in the following categories: peanut products, fruit products, non-sentient creatures, semi-sentient creatures, creatures of unknown sentience, non-living items of questionable sentience, legal weapon components, toys depicting legal weapons, toy depicting illegal weapons, undead pet products, magical artifacts, religious artifacts, magically religious artifacts, magical prescription beverages, or romantic literature of any kind? Before you answer, please note that I am legally prohibited from making a hiring decision based on your answer to this question; it is purely for statistical purposes.”

“Thank you for stopping by! I should have recruitment finalized in a few days, stick to your comm unit for a message.”

"I am opposed to romantic literature of any kind; it's against my religion."

Dotting for a Biotics User Solarian.

"You're shipping all that? Cool!"

My own dot for a skittermander operative of questionable sentience.

Dotting for interest. Thinking of a mechanic of some sort.

Dotting, I haven't played a Starfinder game yet and I've been looking for a good one to get in. I may go for a Vesk Technomancer, or possibly a Dragonkin... I'll kick some ideas around. If I have the time. :D

Liberty's Edge

I would also be interested in this. I have a Dragonkin Soldier and a Shirren Mechanic I could bring.

Presented for your consideration; Cranston Mills

Description:

Physically, Cranston Mills is a 5'10", 160 lb older human. He has very short, white, kinky hair, deep brown eyes, and skin the color of creamed coffee. He doesn't move as fast as he used to, but his eyes are sharp and his hands are very nimble. He regularly wears a suit of Lashunta Tempweave armor, claiming the ship enviro controls are skewed cold.

Cranston has been working in the guts of ships for almost thirty years. He shipped out when he was a young teen and has been moving from job to job, ship to ship since then. Being constantly on the move, good friends are hard to acquire, hence he spends a lot of time arguing with Lucille, his patched-together hover-drone. People have told him that he's smart enough to be designing ships rather then playing grease-monkey, but he enjoys what he does and has no wish to do anything else.

Interview:

Quote:
“Greetings! Thank you much for stopping by. What compels you to apply for a position aboard the Inscrutable?”

The hovering drone slid forward in the air eagerly from beside the older man, only to be redressed.

"You get back, she wasn't talking to you," he said.

The drone turned to him cocking its optical sensors to one side quizzically. This was followed by a series of buzzing and clicking.
"Yes, I'm sure she's a very nice lady, but she was talking to me," the man responded as he stepped forward. With a disappointed sounding series of beeps, the drone returned to her master's side.

"The only reason I'm even looking for a job is because that idiot of a captain, Captain Faradok has decided that humans don't belong in engineering. He thinks that's an android-only section of the ship."

The man harrumphs.

"Sorry about that. That's not somethin' you care about. The name's Cranston Mills and I'm the best ship's engineer that you're gonna find in these here parts."

Quote:
“How many ships have you served on, and for how long?”

Cranston begins to count off his fingers. "Well, up until recently, We worked engineering on The Plaything. Spent two years there. Before that was the Limitless for four years." The hovering drone interrupts with a series of beeps and clicks. "Yes, and I'm sure Captain Yoefuss liked you too," Cranston responds before continuing his history.

"Two years on the X-556. Six months on the Blue Delta. Three years on the Flagga Sarg. Five and a half years on the Bonnet of Beauty.
And my first gig was nine years on the Graceful."

Quote:
“I’m concerned about piracy around the Diaspora. How good are you in a scrap?”

The man's eyes narrow slightly.

"Now just because I'm old doesn't mean I can't take care of myself," he says, turning slightly to indicate the arc pistol strapped to his leg.

With a bleep and a buzz, the hovering drone glides forward. A couple of clicks and a whirring produces an archaic pistol. Cranston reacts quickly to the drone's display, shoving it back, "What did I tell you?" The drone responds with a series of questioning beeps. "You don't point that unless you're gonna use it."

He Turns back to Captain Ross.

"Sorry about that Ma'am. I just armed her with that and she's lookin' for an opportunity to show it off." He leans forward conspiratorially and whispers, "I haven't actually loaded it yet."

Quote:

Cranston's brow furrows.

"No Ma'am. Longs as everything's legal-like, I got no issues with any o' that. Although as far as semi-sentient creatures go. I am allergic to skittermanders, so's I hope we don't end up transporting any o' them things."

Quote:
“Thank you for stopping by! I should have recruitment finalized in a few days, stick to your comm unit for a message.”

Cranston nodded and saluted the Captain smartly. He then turned and stepped away from the table, muttering to the drone.

About Me:

I have close to 40 years experience in RPGs in general. I've been playing Pathfinder for about eight years now (GMing mostly), but I haven't yet had a chance to try Starfinder.

I've only been attempting to join PbP games for a couple of months now. Although, I spent a couple of years back in the late 90s/early 00s playing PBeM games (D&D) which were structured very similarly.

Hi, thanks for putting together something short for people to try Starfinder...that's what interests me most, just getting a taste (starting from nothing).

One question though to get started, ability score generation? According to SRD 4d6 rolling is an option. If so, I'll just randomly roll the entire character.

Reposting from interest.

The basic idea is a former detective that fell away from the force after seeking revenge above the law. He’s since calmed down more in line with what a Shirren would be culturally seeking deathless ends to problems, and puts the skills has had gained into use where he can find work as a jack of all trades.

I will fill in more later, holidays have taken me down.

I like the concept of a character so emo they gained superpowers, but are you aware that you've omitted half the prompt? I'll take a proper look once your submission is complete.

Thanks for asking. I'm not a huge fan of random ability scores (I'm boring like that), so I'd prefer if you used Starfinder's standard flat 10-point buy. If you've got any questions, just let me know.

I decided to go in a different direction. Here's my submission for Kragga, half-orc xenodruid.

Languages Common, Orc
SQ connection (xenodruid), connection powers (speak with animals, grasping vines [DC 14]), healing touch (15 HP), mindlink, orc ferocity, theme knowledge (-5 DC for Culture and Mysticism checks related to religion)
Gear: basic lashunta tempweave, tactical crossbolter, azimuth laser pistol, tactical spear, navigator's tools, trapsmith's tools, mk 1 ring of resistance, mk 1 serum of healing, 25 credits

Description:
A lithe and athletic half-orc woman, Kragga has green skin and long black hair that hangs loose down the side of her head. Her lashunta tempweave armor resembles a simple hide tunic and breeches, reinforced by strategic force fields. She sports a spear, crossbolter, and laser pistol, and the holy symbol of Oras hangs around her neck.

After escaping the drow slave pits of Apostae, Kragga felt a calling to the wild places of the galaxy, finding herself able to speak with animals and commune with nature. She embraced the teaching of Oras: the only way to truly experience existence is to constantly change, to explore new horizons, and to deliberately reshape one's self—mentally, physically, or spiritually—to address any conflict.

Questions:
"I've been in this place for too long. It's time to move on. Stagnation is antithetical to change."

"I've floated around the Pact Worlds on a handful of ships, but I usually don't stay on them for more time than necessary. I'm better with people and animals than machines, but I can shoot a gun if needed."

"Life is a constant battle for survival. If I couldn't fight, I wouldn't be alive."

"No. The contents of your hold make no difference to me."

Experience:
I've been playing tabletop RPGS for 20 years or so, with Pathfinder occupying a large chunk of that time. I've run a handful of sessions of Starfinder and am currently playing in two PbPs here. I am also running several Pathfinder PbPs.

Lucille is such a lovely name for a drone. Cranston seems up to the task - just a few notes on crunch:

Cranston Mills:
  • Skill Ranks:Your bonus to Intimidate checks should be +3, not +6 (mechanics don't have Intimidate as a class skill).
  • Ammo: Cranston has 10 shots, Lucille has nine. If you plan to scavenge ammo as you go, that's fine with me - I just wanted to make sure you're aware you might run out in a firefight.
  • Equipment Costs:If my math is right, you've spent 4,001 credits on equipment, not 3,941 as stated. That's not something you need to correct - I'm not gonna begrudge you one credit - but I thought you might want to know.
  • Drone AC: Lucille's EAC and KAC should both be 16, not 13 - she gets her Dex bonus to AC.
  • Drone Skill Unit: You have Acrobatics listed as Lucille's skill unit, but hover drones get Acrobatics as a bonus skill unit, so you can pick an additional skill from the list - Athletics, Computers, Engineering, Perception, or Stealth. Additionally, the bonus to Acrobatics is +9, not +7 (mechanic levels + Dex bonus + class skill bonus).

Are standard fantasy races (elf, gnome, etc) allowed?

Brainiac wrote:

Ooh! I haven't yet seen a Xenodruid in play. Interested to see how much of the druid bit comes through.

Kragga:
  • Initiative: Your initiative bonus should be +2, not +3.
  • Saving Throws: Starfinder's ring of resistance works a bit differently from Pathfinder's cloak of resistance - you only get the bonus to a single weak save, not to all saves.
  • BAB: Your BAB is +2, not +1.
  • Languages: Since your background states you're from Apostae, go ahead and take Drow as a known language.

mishima wrote:

Yup! Go crazy.

GM Jimbles wrote:

That's correct. The extra class skill comes from being Themeless.

GM Jimbles wrote:

I don't envision Cranston really shining in a firefight. I gave him a weapon simple because no one should be entirely unarmed (including drones :) ). Although the Core book shows the static arc pistol with 20 charges rather than 10.

GM Jimbles wrote:

I bought all the equipment using the Hero Lab Online beta app and I'm sure it's still got issues to work out. I'll drop one of the smoke grenades so he'll have a few loose credits to play with.

Eep! Thanks for noticing the mistakes--I'll factor those into her stat block if chosen.

Oh yeah, totally forgot about the Themeless theme.

Itzi wrote:

That's true, but each shot of an arc pistol consumes 2 units of battery charge.

Oh, and one more thing - you don't have any languages listed in your stat block - in addition to Common, you get four for your starting Int score and one for every rank in Culture.

Ouch. Didn't see that at all. Oh well. I guess he'll end up scavenging the battlefield.

I don't think purchasing a vehicle is the best use of your credits, no. The ability to use a vehicle, though - that might be useful...

Alright, thought they might be like horses and wanted something tech to tinker with. Instead it will be a computer with AI written by her, hopefully functioning like a familiar.

Ziyad carries a kasathan puzzle cube that can only be solved with 4-hands, and is rarely seen not fiddling with its different motions. Built into the device is her personal computer with an experimental AI named "Select", that doubles as her spell cache. She wears the traditional garb of a kasathan native, but it clashes heavily with her unusually modified gear.

Responses to Captain Ross:

1
"Been in the docks too long, I'm ready to work again."
2
"Career officer for 14 years, but mostly science officer of The Evenlode for 10. We studied cerebric fungi off the moon Nchak, one of Liavari's. Life science isn't my passion, but it inspired me to think about new ways of simulating certain neural pathways."
3
"I'll fry them, sir. But I would prefer to develop new technological measures that might make attacks less likely, such as cloaking or misdirection."
4
"Oh, are you a student of mathematics?!" she asks excitedly.

RPG Experience:

Been playing since teen years in the early 90s. 2e/3/3.5/Pathfinder/5e and others occasionally. These days mostly with my young son or GMing 5e on the boards here.

Full on angsty emo tween, I see. Sounds fun!

Vialla Severle:
  • HP: You get 25, not 22 (Con bonus)
  • Speed: Your speed is 25 ft., not 30 (armor penalty)
  • Weapons: You need to pick a damage type (bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing) for your solar weapon. Additionally, I strongly recommend some sort of ranged weapon. A simple pistol would be fine, but you might find a returning starknife or another thrown weapon to better suit your talents.
  • Skills: You might wish to factor your armor check penalty (-2) into your Stealth bonus if you wish to use Stealth when wearing armor.
  • Equipment: A personal comm unit is cheap, but there is one integrated into your armor, so don't feel the need to hold onto that. Also, if my math is right, you've got 298 credits left, not 98. Not sure if you forgot to list something or if it's just a simple error.

Ziyad wrote:

Looks like you're gunnin' for science officer.

Ziyad:
  • Skills: Your bonus to Computers checks is +11, not +12 (Techlore and Skill Focus don't stack), and don't forget your armor check penalty when needed.
  • Spells: Starfinder doesn't have prepared spellcasters - you can cast any spell at any time as long as you have slots remaining.
  • Equipment: I strongly recommend some sort of melee weapon, even if it's just a survival knife or a tactical baton.

GM:

Okay, I'll make the modifications to my speed and HP if I am selected. My Solarian weapon will do bludgeoning.

As for ACP, I usually note in on a character sheet when I build it with an *.

As for my gear, it looks like you are correct on the money differential. In that case I'll pick up a pulsecaster pistol and a spare clip for it.

GM:

Really quick, and I just rechecked: Con bonus doesn't add to HP. It adds to Stamina points, but not HP. HP is a combo of the HP bonus from your race and the HP bonus from your class for each level in that class you have.

It just dawned on me from your note above, so I had to make sure.

Liberty's Edge

@GM:
I plan on applying, and should be able to do so by tomorrow. However, it may be a little late in the day when I can do it.

Surprise dot at the end!
Thinking an operative of some sort.

Presenting Alflin, halfling ace pilot operative.

Background:
Alflin was captured as an infant and raised as a "pet" of an extremely wealthy vesk weapons merchant who enjoyed collecting species. Raised by the other prisoners, he had no name, and was called simply "Halfling". When the vesk's ship was suddenly attacked by pirates, Halfling seized the opportunity, and in the confusion stole the vesk's escape shuttle with the other prisoners. Escaping the pirates should have been nearly impossible for someone who'd never piloted before, but it simply felt... natural. They wound up at Absalom station, and he shortened his name to Alflin, and has since taken on a variety of odd jobs, picking up new tricks and piloting whenever he can.

Answers:
1. "I get to pilot a new ship!"
2. "I've served on... 16 ships, usually a few months each."
3. "I'm not bad at shooting things if it comes to that."
4. "I've been considered questionably sentient myself, so I guess that counts as an moral consternation."

Experience:
I've played tabletop RPGs fora bit more than 7 years, 4 of which have been predominantly pathfinder. I've played starfinder once, in a roughly 2 hour session to try it out. I've played in a few PBPs for 2 years now.

Statblock will up soon.

GM:
If I could ask for a few more hours that'd be great. Less holidays as the problem, more helping a friend.

"Handy" Ahandi, skittermander operative

background:
Handy always liked following people around and watching what they were doing. He learned a lot that way despite not being any smarter than the average skittermander. The trouble came when he followed a Vesk onto her drift shuttle and she took off right after.

Voroxkhad would happily have shot him but Handy managed to talk her into allowing him to work off the debt instead. It turned out she had uses for an innocent-looking kid - carrying messages for her smuggling business mainly. The terrorised skittermander eventually figured out to get clear of her, but with known criminal associates he wasn't able to get any of the usual jobs that skittermanders in the Veskarium usually do.

Odd jobs and occasional thievery have led him to this world, but it's time to leave. Before the law catches up with him that is.

The interview:
“Greetings! Thank you much for stopping by. What compels you to apply for a position aboard the Inscrutable?”

"Oh, it's the name! Who wants a scrutable ship? No, really I'm just wanting to leave this world and I'm too short of cash to pay just now unless I pawn something. The name's good though and being new sounds like the gear should be good and there shouldn't be haunts or curses yet."

“How many ships have you served on, and for how long?”

"Oh, mostly I've paid passage but on this Io-me-de-an supply ship they needed a cargo handler," he strokes his rifle unconsciously, "and I worked passage as a gunner on the free trader Cash 'o' Lot once and as a steward a couple of times.

“I’m concerned about piracy around the Diaspora. How good are you in a scrap?”

"I can shoot this rifle, don't you worry about that! Worked as a bouncer in this ysoki bar, I know how to handle myself up close too."

"You're shipping all that? Cool!"

experience:
I've been playing face-to-face RPGs for 3 decades. I tried PbP on another board (giantitp) which was amazingly frustrating, the games kept falling over, but 6 months on none of the games here have (quite) ended in the same way. I'm in another starfinder PbP one-shot at the mo intending to teach myself how the system plays. One brief starship combat and two rounds of a firefight so far.

Description:
Ranif stands at eight feet and two inches tall and weighs a half ton. Broad shouldered, he is very well muscled, and looks very quick on his feet for a being of his size. His body is covered in shiny silver scales that have a faint blue sheen. His eyes are a strikingly deep green, and are set under a pair of brow ridges that extend into a pair of straight, six inch black horns coming off of his head. However, the most prominent feature of him are his pair of immense black-skinned wings, which spread from his back just below his shoulders.

Responses:

“Greetings! Thank you much for stopping by. What compels you to apply for a position aboard the Inscrutable?”
Well, I have recently run low on credits. This position on the Inscrutable could help remedy that.

“How many ships have you served on, and for how long?”
I have only served upon one ship, the Wyvern, while it was traveling on a multi-stop journey from Triaxus to Absalom Station. The trip was a month-long affair, and I paid for my passage by working aboard the ship.

“I’m concerned about piracy around the Diaspora. How good are you in a scrap?”
Well, I don’t carry this Dragonglaive for nothing. And I was a member of the Starfire Legion for a time.

I only have an issue with the shipping and hauling of semi-sentient creatures, creatures of unknown sentience, and non-living items of questionable sentience, as it doesn’t sit well with my conscience. Additionally, I cannot stand romantic literature, but I am not against the shipping and hauling of it.

RPG Experience:
I have been playing RPGs for about 7-9 years. The games systems I have played in include Pathfinder, Starfinder, D&D 3.5, Hero, and Traveler. I have also familiarized myself with a couple of other systems. As for my mastery with Starfinder, I have been running and playing in it essentially since it came out. Finally, I am fairly new to PBP gaming, only really getting into it over the past couple months, but I am in a few games at this point.

Cranson looks around suspiciously.

"That smells like a ... like a ... "

His face contorts.

"AAAACCHHOOOOOO!!!"

A dirty rag is pulled from one of his many pockets. With a rough hand, he wipes his nose.

"Dammit! Where is the little fur-ball?! I told her I was allergic to the stupid things!"

Sorry, because of travel delays coming home, I haven't quite finished my statblock. I'll have it done early tomorrow.

  • Ziyad, kasatha spacefarer technomancer 3
Alright, recruitment is closed! In addition to the submissions above, I also have:
  • Ahand, skittermander outlaw operative (thief) 3
  • Ranif Tharystix, dragonkin mercenary soldier (blitz) 3
  • Alfin, halfling ace pilot operative (ghost) 3
I'm gonna take a day or two to parse through and leave comments on the more recent submissions. I should have the final list up in a couple days, so check back soon! Thanks to all for taking the time to apply.

Alright, some comments for the rest of you:

Ahandi:
  • Your point-buy is short by 2 points, if my math is right.
  • Will is a strong save for operatives - your Will save bonus should be +3.
  • I'm not sure how you're calculating your grapple bonus - normal is attack vs. KAC + 8; you get a +2 racial bonus and a +4 feat bonus for attack +6 vs. KAC + 8.

Ranif Tharystrix:
  • The Perception modifier in your senses line doesn't match the one in your statistics block (the second is correct).
  • Melee damage on your glaive is 1d8+6, not 1d8+7.
  • I know you have reach for days and a breath attack, but I still recommend a ranged option in your back pocket, even if it's a dinky pistol.

Alfin:
  • Your SP and HP should be 18 & 20, respectively.
  • Your ACs are too high by 1 (max dex mod from the freebooter armor is only +4).
  • Insight bonuses don't stack on skill modifiers. Your Acrobatics, Piloting, and Stealth modifiers should be 2 lower each.
  • Operatives get strong Will saves - your Will save bonus should be +4.
  • Damage for your tactical baton is 1d4+0 (Str penalty).

Final decisions should be coming soon!

@GM Jimbles:
Sorry about the Perception bonus, I was in a hurry at the time.
As for the melee damage, Ranif has the melee striker gear boost, which adds an extra half of your strength modifier to melee damage rolls.
Finally, I could afford to get a Pulsecaster rifle if I drop either the wristpad or one of the healing serums. I know that is a non-lethal weapon, but it is a very cheap weapon.

Gear boosts! I knew I forgot something.

I'll leave it up to you, I just wanted to ensure you were aware of it. There's not really any downside to non-lethal damage in Starfinder, so it's a fine choice.

Thanks for the catches, GM! :)
