Charles-- Wulf is attacking a crate. Do you still want to "strike his foe", or pick a different target?

Wulf smashes one of the crates to tiny shards! Meyanda swallows hard in disbelief and takes a step backwards. She is still in cover but it isn't "improved cover" anymore

GM-Screen-With-Lots-of-Extra-Rolls:

meyanda will : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

meyanda will : 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
meyanda will : 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22

After initialing being fooled by the Gearsman image, Meyanda realizes that it is a trick, and ignores it. She looks at Wulf and casts a spell! The spell goes through his tough skin and underlying metal!

Wulf Will Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Looks like Wulf is (lesser) confused! Wulf, I am seeing different numbers in your profile for your Will saves. +1, +4, +7... In this case it doesn't matter, because the roll was a natural 4. I am thinking that is proper number is +6 while raging. Could you review? (1 base, 1 wisdom, 2 for rage, 2 for superstition...Does rage and superstition even stack? They are both morale bonuses. That seems weird.) what else?

Grenades blow up as big as fireballs. There is no where to place it to avoid either Wulf or Charles. You could land it right next to her though, definitely, and avoid cover.

Charles gives the robot a couple of scratches, doing some damage (2), but not much. These things have heavy armor!

Knowing that his arrows are unlikely to do much against the robots, but left with the possibility that tossing this grenade thing is going to hurt his allies more than the enemy, Ton is left with little option.

Stepping into the door he levels his bow at one of the robots and lets fly, hoping that by including the arrow with as much power as he can muster, it might somehow break through.

Ton's anger plays out in an awesome shot! He draws back, aims, and shoots! The icy arrow plants itself right into the optical receptor of the robot! As it falls, acid starts spreading around the entry point, and eventually dissolves the robot from the inside out!

Seeing charles get hit by the robot and doubting the effectiveness of his pistol, he rushes in while drawing the wand. Getting close to the halfing, he tries to make sure he can keep him standing, and the little guy had a knack for hitting these guys hard.

Healing: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Continuing his song over the loud hum of the room, the room started to shake even more as his voice matched pitch to it and began making the place rumble. Tremor, -1 AC to those on the ground. Continuing to inspire

LaRA bursts into the room. Above her open wrist, a strange, almost impossible geometrical figure takes shape, as she projects it towards Wulf. "Enlarge.", she blurts out, as with a flick of her other arm, a form begins to rumble behind the archers' cover. "Conjuring reinforcement.", she continues in her snappy, almost out-of-tune combat voice.

Rolls/OoC:

The pre-cast casting from LaRA would include a Enlarge Person on Wulf, readied so it starts when he moves into the room. On her turn, she'll take a 5ft step and a 5ft shift, and cast a Summon Monster II for an Earth Elemental, at the marked location.

Wulf is enlarged! (that happened before the battle, but wouldn't have changed much yet so don't worry about integrating it until you go again)

So close! given the positioning here, I am going to deem Meyanda as having partial cover against your reach attack. As such, the critical does not confirm.

Also, two new pictures added to roll20: gearsman and Meyanda. The avatar for Meyanda is pretty crazy. I randomly happened across a very "order of the stick" image for her by searching online. I guess someone else is playing the same type of thing as us.Someone with good artistic ability.

However, she is weakening quickly. However, her android face betrays no fear, only more and more anger.

Meanwhile, Charles flips his daggers about and plunges them into the robot, but neither hit is enough to get past the plate armoring.

"Hellion take you all! This was a good plan! A plan that would have saved the world from unspeakable evil, just at the cost of one worthless town in the middle of nowhere. Now my Lord shall never get the power he needs.... but at least I can kill you all! This fusion reactor is going supercritical!"

She takes a five foot step away, brandishes a fine looking technological pistol at the huge pulsating machine, and fires. Zeke casts coin shot again, having used his magic pearl to recall the arcane power he invested in it this morning. He steps back to make sure he has a clear shot and fires!

By GM request, Zeke will not suck! Well, except that he must fire into combat. But still, no sucking!

Pistol ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 1 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 1 - 4 = 12 (BAB + DEX + masterwork + bless + inspire courage - Deadly Aim - firing into combat)
Adamantine damage: 1d10 + 1 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 1 + 2 = 6 (caster level + inspire courage + Deadly Aim)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Far away in the heavens, Groetus looks down upon the young budding mystic theurge with great interest. He tries so hard yet is so incompetent. I'll just give him a little nudge.

Groetus gives Zeke's arm a bump. Zeke gets an additional +1 to hit and pegs the robot in the center of the chassis... it falls to the ground, deactivated.

As Ton'iel shouts to LaRA for help, you all realize that the danger is far from over! In fact, the true danger is just beginning. The reactor is making all kinds of ominous noises as a strange energy seems to permeate the room all around you! Something clicks in LaRA's mind as she yells, "RADIATION!"

PC Fort Saves dc13:

Android bonuses: +4 racial bonus on all saving throws against mind-affecting effects, paralysis, poison, and stun effects. Immune to fatigue, exhaustion, disease, sleep. fear and all emotion based effects.
Garfaulk Fort Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Charles, Zeke, LaRA, and Garfaulk all feel sapped! 1 Constitution drain each.

You all would want nothing more than to simply run out of there, away from this terrorizing machine that is leaking death onto you. But you know innately-- perhaps though more divine intervention of Brigh or maybe even Groetus-- that if you don't fix this machine, you and the whole town will very likely die.

A skill challenge for your lives and for the lives of every citizen in Torch.

The party needs to accomplish six tasks. Each person pick one, which obviously may require some talking to each other first to figure who is best suited. Make the rolls, and I will narrate what happens. So at this point, just roll and don't worry about explaining what your character is doing-- I will tie everything together.

First off all, before you go make another Fortitude save to resist the radiation, failure at DC13 means you take another 1 Con Drain.

1. The reactor has caught fire again. Put it out! Use your creativity.
2. Perception check.
3. Strength check.
4. Disable Device.
5. Linguistics
6. Knowledge:Engineering.

All of these need to be done before 6 failures at a unknown DC. It is a high one. We will do one round of everyone going, and then I will give further instructions.

Zeke will start with Knowledge (Engineering), since he had already been looking at the reactor. (I made a roll earlier, before she shot it, which might not have had any effect, but if it did it might provide a circumstantial bonus... the total was 20.) If he has time to pray for guidance first, he will add 1 to his total.

LaRA's hands leap up in the air, her fingers drawing another set of arcane equations. With a similar rumble to that of the earth elemental, a small puddle appears to extrude out of the ground, beginning to move around. "Task: Extinguish flames. Secondary task: Standby for instructions.", LaRA's voice orders the elemental, as she quickly turns around. "Critical Warning: Radiation levels vastly exceeding safe limits. Lethal dose will be reached in less than two minutes.", she factually informs. "Please remain calm."

Running to stand next to Zeke and the water elemental currently busy extinguishing the flames, her eyes begin darting over the damaged console. "Attempting translation. Please standby for instructions."

LaRA, did you cast summon monster 2 with a water elemental then? That is pretty awesome and effective. But give me a concentration check as you do it. These stress of the situation requires you do block out any distraction as you cast the spell. As for your linguistics, you are getting ahead, just do the one task for the time being.

I'm going to do what Wulf does best.

1. The reactor has caught fire again. Put it out! Use your creativity.

With yells and near panick erupting around her, La-RA closes her eyes, shuts out the noise, and concentrates on her spellcasting. Knowing that the party needs to fix this machine, and seeing the fire spread across it, it is only logical that the fire must be quenched before anything else can be done.

LaRA's concentration check: 1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 3 + 4 = 24

A water elemental appears! La-RA guides it up and down the machine... soon, all the open flames are extinguished.

2. Perception check.

Ton'iel's sharp elven eyes take it all in... The machine, whirling and spitting and... angry. The machine is made of the same metal and rubber and buttons and valves throughout. It is very uniform in appearance. Except for one small machine in the front of it.

Ton'iel rushes over and looks more closely at it. This piece is a different metal and slightly different color, and doesn't belong here. He mind goes back to what the captive ratman told them... Meyanda had a machine that was wirelessly transmitting power from the reactor to the surface. This must be that machine. And it probably was interfering with the proper function of the reactor. Maybe interfering with the Torch!

3. Strength check.

Not seeing another way to do it, and lacking time, Ton instructs Wulf to simply rip Meyanda's machine off the main reactor! Wulf spits on his hands... bends over... and pulls... and pulls... and pulls...! No! He doesn't have the leverage. He has to reset and try again.

Fail!

4. Disable Device. Succeed... waiting for success in part 3 to describe.

5. Linguistics. Failure

6. Knowledge:Engineering. Failure

Ok, after round 1 you have 3 failures and 3 successes! This is what happens in round 2: Decide who is going to be the primary roller for Strength, Linguistics, and Knowledge:Engineering. The three characters who are not the primary rollers can do an aid (DC10) of a skill of their choice!

Radiation continues. Give a DC 13 Fort check at the beginning of your turn again

Fort Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Garfaulk grunts as the pain from whatever this radiation was hit him once more, making him double over a bit. Looking to the others, he sees Wulf trying to remove the strange device. [b]"Oy, you got his pup! Yer big, yer strong, you've beaten tougher machines than this! I believe in ya Wulf!"[b]

I was going to inspire competence, but upon reviewing the ability, I don't think it can be used to help a strength check? If I can't, I'll still yell that, then go over to assist presumably Lara with Linguistics

Assist?:
Linguistics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Human Barbarian !Rage! hp 84/84 | F+12(+16) R+3(+7) W+5(+7) | DR 2 | AC 17, T 11, FF 18 (+7 armor, +1 Dex, +1 Nat, -2 RA) | Init +3 | Perc 9 | CMB +12; CMD 23 | Debuff: | Rage 16/16

Would the grippers work here?

Fort: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Strength+large+grippers: 1d20 + 5 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 5 + 1 + 2 = 18

Oh so happy with all my rolls...! Very frustrating.

The grippers absolutely work and I am super happy that you remembered them! You missed the check by one last time. This time because of the grippers you nailed it spot on! (The Strength check DC is lower than the others)

3. Strength check.

Brawn is good. But brains plus brawn are even better. Reaching into his bag, Wulf retrieves the grippers- a technological wrench that the party found in one of their first trips into the caves. Wulf sets the grippers onto a protusion, and they tighten automatically. And then, with a rage empowered roar, he twists! The machine half-pops off, exposing wires underneath.

4. Disable Device check.

Charles quickly gets to work. With the wires exposed, he is able to assess the proper sequence of wire cuts to avoid getting electrocuted. With a snip-snip here, a snip-snip there, everywhere a snip-snip, the wires are cut safely and Wulf lets the power transmitter fall to the ground.

5. Linguistics. LaRA currently has 1 aid.

6. Engineering. Probably that means Zeke as the primary roller, since Garfaulk aided LaRA.

And then Ton and Charles can yet choose who they wants to aid (I will rule that untrained aiding is fine).
