Hi everyone,
I’ve decided to make good use out of my Humble Bundle purchase and run an Iron Gods campaign. But I’d like to limit the party to 3 players only. To compensate, we will be playing gestalt characters. The in-game reason for this is that your characters are all androids, who, for some reason, have recently began remembering one of their previous lives. This can be a memory of a distant past on a distant world, or just one or two 'generations' back - but it came suddenly and unexpectedly, and contained images not unlike those of the strange metal ruins dotting Numerian landscape.

Character creation:

Race: Android. To increase the party diversity, I will also allow the racial options from the Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Androids by Jon Brazer Enterprises. Some of those are available on d20pfsrd, but the book has more, plus a few pages of flavor text. It's still just fine if everyone makes standard androids, as long as you observe the character considerations in the next spoiler.
Class: Gestalt combo of any two Paizo classes. If a class has the Unchained version, please use that.
Ability Scores: 20 point buy, 18-8 before racial modifiers.
Traits: Two, one from the player’s guide.
Alignment: A strong preference for non-Chaotic, non-Evil. Even if you decide to go all HK-47, make sure your character is not up to disrupting the party and the plot.
Background: Try to not go overboard - I think 2-5 paragraphs is usually enough to convey the motivation your character has to undertake the adventure, and to showcase your writing chops while you're at it.

The game will use some of the Unchained rules: Consolidated skills, Background skills, Skill Unlocks, Combat Stamina feat (free for fighters), Automatic Bonus Progression.

Character considerations:

Please remember that Androids in PF are not robots. They have living human souls inhabiting a near-perfect (and at times, perfected) replica of a human body. The key difference is really nanites doing the function of hormones or vegetative system. Thus, they are capable of feeling most human senses - pain, hunger, temperature, physical enjoyment, and of expressing almost any human emotion - but through an either altered or dulled perspective. E.g. they may be immune to fear, but they can run for their life if they assess the situation as dangerous. They may not experience sex drive - but they can value someone caring for them and begin caring for someone in return, etc.

Your brain has preserved and somehow unlocked a memory of actions your body has taken while inhabited by a different soul. It is entirely possible that your previous self is disgusting to the current one. On the contrary, it could have been a paragon of perfection to which you can now only aspire. Either way, this predicament makes you unique amongst androids and other humanoids you knew so far. This is a great boon - but at times, it could become a danger too.

While your body is a marvelous technological creation, this in and of itself makes you no more qualified as a technologist than any random human as a doctor. Perhaps even less as nanites take care of most of your body's inner workings, so fewer things can go wrong. Keen intellect does help you learn quicker but you don't come with much pre-packaged knowledge. Speaking of intellect, while your brain is technically a computer, it works entirely differently from the modern computers in real life, and even if there might be a binary code underpinning it somewhere, your thought processes are countless levels of abstraction above it.

People from the waiting thread after the previous IG recruitment are welcome to apply, however due to the rules changes you’d still need to rebuild your character even if you made an android for that game.

I'm not sure how much interest this idea will generate. I plan to make the selection before Monday Feb 20th if I get enough applicants by then.

Sounds fun! I'll have my character ready some time this weekend.

Liberty's Edge

Yes yes yes, I have an Android Arcanist that could be lovely. Small question about Skill Unlocks, will it be rogue only or available through feat/Investigator talent?

I just missed out on an Iron Gods recruitment. You've definitely got my interest. That character won't work here, he was a dwarf. But I'll have something whipped up soon.

Is there going to be an in-game reason for the memory shock? Because I have an old concept for an Android character who suffered trauma in the "care" of the Technic League, and ended up developing a sort of Manic-Depressive disorder that made him seem like two different people. It might be interesting to adapt that character to this idea, but I'd like to know if I'll need to nix the Technic League part of his backstory or not.

Newbonomicon wrote:

Yes.

Spoiler:

My idea does not involve the Technic League but I don't think it directly contradicts it either. However, I have not yet fully developed it in every detail. I don't think it will seriously come into play until the end of the first or even second adventure, so there might be some wiggle room for flexibility. The only thing I'll say is that if Technic League learns this fact about you, you will be very high on their target list for capture and experiments.

Would you allow an android with the Seeker of the Final Cause inquisitor archetype (from the Advanced Androids book) and the Conversion Inquisition?

I might cook something up. Likely a front line martial.

Lord Kakabel wrote:

Yes, I'd allow that.

I'm interested. Definitely.

Liberty's Edge

One last rules question, would you apply the Unchained Rogue's added capabilities (finesse training, debilitating injury, rogue's edge) to the ninja? There's a nice android archetype for it, the nanoshade.

Also, could I argue against Consolidated Skills? It would force me to get skills that would go against my concept of a somewhat asocial shut-in tinkerer (Sense Motive, Handle Animal, Ride, the Society knowledges).
Furthermore, it would force me to take Craft(mechanical) and Knowledge(engineering) as background skills, even if they are important in this campaign, and I wanted to get them with normal skill ranks. I think that it can be a nice system, but in a game such as this, it's a step towards uniformity, where people are good at the same things.

This is a really cool idea!

I have one comment on character building that you can totally ignore, but from my own experience Gestalt really shines with higher point buys because it allows very MAD statlines, which encourages players to diversify rather than just make themselves REALLY good at one thing and it helps to increase the variety of class combos that feel reasonable. I advocate 25 point buy for this reason. It would also help with the statline for those who don't have access to the Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Androids. Once again, feel free to entirely ignore my rambles, it's just something I have noticed.

(Probably laying it on a little thick, but the concept moved me.)
"She was exquisitely crafted, a sight to behold— every line shaped towards form and function. It was said that to look upon her was to witness the divine."

"—I know a good few offerings were likely made that night as well, from altars made of flesh, if you follow my meaning."

Background:
To her, faith was unquestionable. It was a pull that had been felt since she woke up and took her first steps out of the maintained shrine that she first found herself in. The acolytes were pleased, of course. They had not thought that the being that slept in the chamber would ever be roused, but they persisted, doing what they could for the devices and machinery as they continued their rituals. They would not tell her how long they had been waiting, only that they were happy that she had woken up.

Diamonds shining in ink was the image that she could remember of her last dream, having felt that she was falling through the lonely black expanse of eternity. It was something that lingered, echoes of that distant vision almost seeming to draw her in when she looked up at the night sky. She was always between the sky and the earth, a resolute point against the blackness, perpetually in motion that was sometimes disorienting as the gems spilled around her. Was she pulling or being pulled?

"It was their task", the devotees had said, explaining how they had come to the monastery. Some came out of penance, some came out of reverence, but they all heeded a call that had led them here. The small monastery was just that, enough for two-score people, though a little over half that were there when she woke. Joyfully welcomed, she was instructed, educated, and attired. When they felt she was ready, she was sent towards the flame that they could see in the distance, to be a reminder that belief was a light that could easily shine brighter than any flame.

So I discovered something great about unchained barbarians, and I was inspired to build this character cause I think he's awesome.

Baleiro Background:

Baliero is an average-height humanoid, with black hair and blue eyes, a sculpted, emotionless face, and numerous glowing blue tattoo circuits running all over his body.

Baleiro awoke a few years ago, discovered shortly thereafter by citizens of Torch. He has since then established himself as an educator in Torch, teaching the young about history, mechanics, and alchemy. Usually he avoids getting involved in things but he did get involved with Khonnir Baine a few times, consulting him on various things. He's cordial, respectful of others, and while very intelligent, prefers to let others take the spotlight in social situations because he's aware of his limitations as a speaker. He still wants to help improve others, and that's why he's a teacher.

What Baleiro doesn't know about himself is that he was built for war. At current, his personality and sense of self is just part of a partition that allows the 'unit' to interact with civilians. When things get dangerous enough, his 'safety protocols' are disengaged and his personality subroutines go into background processes. That's when he 'rages'. His nanite tattoo lines turn from glowing blue to red, as does his eyes, and he otherwise operates like a barbarian would.

Dotting! Very interesting proposal!

@rungok: being Androids immune to emotion... I'm not sure they can rage, my friend :)

Yes they can! Unchained barbarian's get an UNTYPED bonus, not morale! I did a bunch of research.

Well, I wasn't referring to the boni, but to the stand-to-reason fact that they're... Well, raging. No matter what kind of boni it gives, it's still an emotion effect. Very interesting question, though. I guess on the GM to rule! :)

I also gave plenty of reason why it would work thematically too.

The gm also put a character consideration spoiler that was what les me to believe it would be okay.

Since it's a party of androids, then that's the exact game to come out with this kind of reason.

Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as standoffish or combative. I was excited over the fact that it would work and I'd actually be able to play an android as something other than a dex-magus. :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Oh, I didn't feel you're being combative at all! My comment was mostly meant to be "if there's a party that this kind of exception would work, that would be a party of androids in need of something to help differentiate them". I'm sure you'll come out with something creative if hadn't already, and it ends up being with the GM to like it or not. Good luck! I, myself, am still thinking on possibilities. Hopefully not a dex magus! Hehe.

Interesting concept. Dotting. Thinking of going:

Lore Warden/Learned Duelist Fighter / Kensai Blade Bound Magus

Or an Inspired Blade Noble Fencer Swashbuckler / Kensai Blade Bound Magus

Couldn't you just take the Anomaly alternate racial trait to get morale bonuses?

Dotting for interest

Two Questions:

Are you using VMC?

What is the starting gold?

Hmmm.... I will dot this, but I'm still thinking of a character concept, so nothing may come of it.

Sapiens:

Skill Unlocks would be available to non-Rogues via a feat. Also OK for giving the nanoshade ninja Unchained Rogue abilities.
However, I rather do like the consolidated skills. In your example, I could argue that an agile ninja should be able to hold himself up on horseback, a keen mind can observe people just as well as objects (not the same as interacting!), he wouldn't be able to learn many languages without either reading tons of literature or speaking to many people, and handle animal is also fairly thematic (e.g. to slip past guard dogs, train/carry snakes for poisoning, or use birds for messaging - I can think of a number of examples of ninjas using animals). If you want to roleplay a shut-in, I'd probably advise staying away from Society altogether and look for other ways to gain some languages (traits/Int). I could also houserule that giving up 1 consolidated skill earns you two of the regular skills as background skills (similar to the Lore variant). As for the uniformity argument - I'm guessing everybody will take Perception in either case, and there are 11 skills left between 3 characters having 2-4 spare ranks each... sounds about right to cover most but not all of the bases.

@Ouachitonian: Normal starting gold (best of the two classes). I am disinclined against VMC seeing as the characters are already gestalt. But if you have a specific combo in mind, show me and I might agree if it makes for a cooler character that still has uses for the rest of the party.

@rungok/The Chess: based on this post by Mark Seifter, I am inclined to agree with The Chess. Unchained rage is still an emotion effect, to which mechanically you are immune (even though you can be angry etc. in-character). That said, the concept is pretty cool, and you can still take either the Anomaly racial trait from the JBE book or the Empathy feat to enable it!

This looks super interesting, count me in.

The only thing that really comes to mind for VMC is VMC sorcerer with the Nanite bloodline, seems like it'd be pretty thematic even for a non-caster android. Mostly, though, I'm just wanting to make sure I know what my options are.

I'm thinking a Fighter/Aerokineticist, actually. Someone who's devoted his life to the blade (Looking at probably Swordlord or Ustalavic Duelist archetypes) but also has a natural ability to control his body's electricity that he's begun to unlock.

OK, have a build for a fighter/warpriest worked up. I'll just need to think about the background a bit more, but I think it will work.

Very interested! Have Fifteen here already done as a fighter, I'll be adding a gestalt class shortly. :)

Now finished restat as a fighter/impossible sorcerer. Might change to to an energy weapon brawler though if I was selected and depending on others in the party. :)

@GM: Are advanced firearms ok? Or early only? Or none at all? :) What's the initial wealth (is it average)? Are drawbacks allowed?

Thanks!

I'm currently GMing an iron gods campaign, but would like to throw a hat in. Is running it a deal breaker?

Ok, that's reasonable. I ended up dropping Perception and considering Social as book knowledge, and I flavoured it as getting muscle memory from his past soul, but no actual memories.

In hindsight, that Alsande had no memories before his 18 years should have been a clue. That he had an uncanny knack for working with all kinds of gizmos and trinkets could have been another. But when a man named Khonnir Baine shelters you, teaching the tools of his trade and spinning you the tragic tale of how you were the only survivor of a devastating caravan attack, you don't start wondering whether you're actually an android in disguise. Especially if you really are an android, as they are notoriously prone to misunderstanding emotions.

For about six years, Alsande lived in Khonnir's house, working in his lab. He was extremely skilled with magic, assisting Khonnir in the creation of many an item and the repairing of many a trinket. He was frail and awkward around people; his only true friend was Baine's daughter, Val, but it didn't matter much. He had a passion for the craft, as if craftsmanship was flowing in his veins. And indeed it was.

A week Khonnir went missing, a worried Alsande noticed something weird going on with his appearance, as if a disguising spell was fading. His dark hair was turning silk-white, his skin was taking an ashen coloration, and even his eyes seemed to be bleaching. But, most unnervingly, circuit tattoos were emerging on his skin. Circuit patterns that Alsande knew very well. The mark of an android. Val was as shocked as he was by this sudden transformation but her reaction should be written once I know her personality.

It wasn't all. The magic also suppressed some past reflexes, years of training and muscle memory left imprinted in his body by a past soul, granting him a thief's instincts. The lanky, awkward geek could now move faster and more precisely than ever, his fingers closed around daggers like he knew how to use them, and walking without making a noise came disturbingly easy.

Set on finding out the truth about his origins, and why Khonnir had hidden the truth, there was only one decision he could take. He grabbed his spellbook, some gear, and set off to finding him.

Why did Khonnir magically disguise Alsande? Why didn't he tell him the truth? Where did he come from? A few plot hooks.

--------------------
Appearance
Alsande used to look like a normal human, with black hair and brown eyes, but that was before the magic hiding his real nature wore off. Now he's weirldy colorless, his hair, eyes and skin all in the same shade of pearl-grayish white. He's of medium height and feeble corporature, and he usually dresses in an artificer's outfit, with a cotton shirt (recently dyed a bright blue to provide the color his carnation is missing) and leather breeches (dyed a deep red).

--------------------
Personality
Alsande used to be an awkward, introverted, geekish kid. This hasn't changed much, except that, of lately, he has decidedly freaked out. The discovery of his nature has made him restless, anxious and worried, a bad match for the android's innate lack of social capabilities. He's the tipe of guy who could speak for a couple hours about something he found interesting (usually related to magic, engineering or craftworks), without thinking whether his interlocutor is understanding even a single word. He could, as well, unwillingly offend people with a remark that he thought to be innocent.

As for alignment, I wrote him LN to represent both his dedication to magic and crafts and the fact that he hasn't yet been faced with any significant moral decision.

Hey, here's a skill monkey character I built for a similar campaign recruitment. Ninier. Sexless. But looks male. Please take a look and thanks for the consideration.

It/He? is mostly an investigator out of combat and mostly a ranger in combat. Flavoured it so the ranger side is from the past self while the investigator side is the present self. He's a curious and naive sort as he just woke in a cave near Torch and is only 'a few months' old. Explained the alchemy as another previous self being an alchemist and leaving Ninier the formula book.

He's a high int character and I gave him the Technologist feat as his first level feat and Androffan as a bonus langauge. Please let me know if that's not a good idea and I'll swap them out.

Consolidated skills interacts a bit oddly with Background skills. Can I assume Craft Alchemy and Appraise still exist and can be used as Background skills?

Background:

Awake... I come awake watching a bright shining light. It fills my view as it blazes up into they sky like a beacon. I watch it for a very long time until.. hunger... causes me to tear my gaze away and look around.

I am sitting at the mouth of a cave. I identify the objects around me as a.. hammer... a bow.. arrows. a book of formulas.. and other odds and ends. With the formula book there is a note. It says it is of a... previous... self? It claims itself an alchemist and explains how to use the formula book.

I contemplate my existence for a while as I go back to looking at the light. A memory comes to me. A memory of hunting and scavenging... of swinging a hammer and a metallic head... and an intenese hatred of something called... the Technick League?

I do not know what this Tehcnick Leauge is.

Curious.

This memory also does not seem like the one that wrote me the note.

Curiouser still.

The buildings at the foot of the great beacon indicate other beings.. beings that I am to be wary of. I am filled with an insatiable curiosity about all of these things. This curiosity is at...odds... with the memory. Finally the hunger is too much to ignore and I pick up my bow and move out. I find, like the memory, I am skilled at hunting, killing, skinning, and preparing meat. Residues of the skill of the memory former self?

So I eat and study my previous self's formula book and gaze at the light. My curiosity somehow sated by staring at it. Until... one day.. the light goes out and all I am left with is my questions... The most urgent is the first.

Why?

I don my hides, pick up the equipment and head towards the dwellings.

Description

Ninier is a six foot tall humanoid being with a curiosly slack face devoid of expression and eyes that are a silvery metal grey. The way he holds himself indicates that he is skilled with the lucerne hammer and bow that he is wearing and the way he looks around indicates a deep curiosity.

I don't have JBE... drat.

Anomaly is in the Android entry, about 3/4 the way down, under Alternate Racial Traits.

Empathy feat is here.

I plan on using one of them myself :)
I am thinking of trying to create the "perfect human android" with unsurpassed beauty, despite being made of metal.
So something like bard/oracle or maybe sorcerer. I will have to figure out an archetype for the bard that makes better use of bardic preformances tho.

However, that -2 Cha is rather crippling *_*

Race: Android. To increase the party diversity, I will also allow the racial options from the Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Androids by Jon Brazer Enterprises. Some of those are available on d20pfsrd, but the book has more, plus a few pages of flavor text. It's still just fine if everyone makes standard androids, as long as you observe the character considerations in the next spoiler.

Is there an option in there that would change the races stat array, preferably to something with at least a neutral Cha that you would be willing to share with me?

Otherwise I will probably have to stick with the Conduit trait and see what I can do from there.

Check d20pfsrd, it's on the android entry.

@The Chess: Only early firearms (well, the default ones). Forgot about drawbacks, these are allowed. Wealth is the best of your classes' averages.
@Trinam: not a deal breaker, I trust you to keep the meta to yourself. You're welcome to apply! That said, I will try to stick to the written adventure but reserve the right to make adjustments when I see fit; hope everyone's on board with this.
@Azih: Yes, I am fairly sure that Appraise and Craft are specifically intended to be taken as background skills in this combo. Technologist is fine, but as for Androffan I was thinking that it should not be readily available, seeing as there are no texts or speakers preserved, and it should be a Social(Linguistics) check to read it even if you are familiar. I still have to do a bit of research on that one.

I was thinking of the Repairing Nanites ability rather than Nanite Surge. It's basically a free +4 to CON for the purposes of HP in exchange for a one time boost to a roll.

Nanite Surge might be a bit overkill with Investigator Inspiration thrown in as well.

By gum. I'm convinced. Nineir is going to have Repairing Nanites!

Liberty's Edge

Whoops, I'd left Pragmatic Activator among my traits, but it doesn't work with Consolidated Skills. I'll swap it for Spark of Creation (+1 to Craft and reduce item creation cost by 5%).
Also, I took Androffan too, but I'm fine with Linguistic checks. I studied dead languages in high school and they are definitely not easy.

Anybody know how to get the JBE stuff into HeroLab? I'd rather not bother with it if I have to input it manually, but might use it if I can figure out how with the program.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Okay, HERE IS MY CHARACTER. She is an Unchained Rogue/Wizard, who is built for support and also 'going first.' I also took Ironspy, will probably grab the Stealth unlock at 5th to go with it, and totally plan on sniping people with Sneak Attack Ray of Frosts vs flat-footed touch ac. Because I'm a jerk. :D

Background:
Have you ever had one of those CN rogue types in your party who screwed the party, took extra loot shares for themselves, and used their alignment to justify acting like a total jerkface to literally anyone who got in their way? The sort of rogue where, if its player had a problem with someone else at the table, they'd just randomly decide to slit their throat in the middle of the night and go 'lol idk I'm chaotic neutral!!' when the player got mad?

That was Tabby's last life, and the one she's retained dim memories from. She called herself 'Odair,' and she made quite a few enemies.

To be frank, Tabby finds her disgusting even from the limited memories of her that she possesses--her soul being a far kinder one than her thief-self's ever was. From the moment of her awareness she showed her own talent for magic, and focused as hard on it as she could to divorce herself from her past self--she never wishes to become that sort of person again. Unfortunately, the attention she garnered for happening to look precisely like Odair served to make her early life difficult, as people in Starfall mistook her for her former self and no amount of explanation was ever as good enough. She left of her own accord when she fell in with Khonnir Bane, accepting his tutelage for her magical skills (and also crashing at his home). She never told him of her odd memories, knowing that they were odd enough to be carefully kept secret. (This means that she's a little bit old for a starting android, already being 14 years of age)

With his disappearance, she's grown worried--it's time for the student to try and save the teacher. To that end she's willing to do anything, including risk herself exploring the strange caverns below the flame that's now gone out.

Working on a Ranger/Fighter. Going Skirmisher on the Ranger, so no magic for me!

Joseph Bonkers:

Conduit: Rarely, an android’s circuitry is built to act
as a potent conduit for divine power. Androids with this
trait treat their Charisma score as 2 points higher for the
purpose of the channel energy and lay on hands class
features, and also for oracle class features (including both
spellcasting and revelations). Furthermore, conduits treat
their caster level as 1 higher when casting cure and inflict
spells. This racial trait replaces nanite surge.

Magitech: Some androids possess circuitry infused
with magical energies, which allow them to better channel
arcane power. Androids with this trait choose a bloodrager
or sorcerer bloodline at 1st level and treat their Charisma
score as 2 points higher for all bloodrager and sorcerer class
abilities (including spellcasting) if they have that bloodline.
Androids with both bloodrager and sorcerer class levels
gains this benefit for both bloodlines if they have the same
bloodline for each class. Additionally, magitech androids
gain a +2 racial bonus on Spellcraft checks. This racial trait
replaces nanite surge.

A lot of wonderful submissions already!

Indeed, how am I supposed to pick just 3 - people on these boards are too good!

About the Androffan language - I am going to apply the 'decipher writing' rules for Linguistics, with additions that having Androffan as one of your languages and a Technologist feat gives a flat +5 each. So with 18+ Int and either Androffan or Technologist you should be able to understand the simple DC20 messages from 1st level by taking 10, and if you have both then even the normal DC25 ones.

@Trinam and others: The skill rank favored class bonus should be factored in before halving the ranks. The effect is that while normally you need 14/18 Int to get a bonus rank, with the FCB it becomes 12/16/20.

I'm thinking about switching the fighter half of my submission to ranger, which brings up a question:

A Kineticist's Gather Power class feature states:

Quote:
If she has both hands free (or all of her prehensile appendages free, for unusual kineticists), a kineticist can gather energy or elemental matter as a move action.

If I were to choose TWF ranger, would wearing gauntlets or cesti leave my hands free for purposes of Gather Power?
