Meliora Castafiore |
Pew pew.
Ray of Frost: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
...clearly, you see, she is still frazzled from before.
Micheria "Mic' Musca |
"Fine then, so much for that plan."
Giving up on being a shield Mic snaps a brisk kick at the sewer monster.
Unarmed Strike: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Jack Duncloak |
Jack can't help but smile at the sight of Mic kicking fearlessly at what appears to be an alligator! He keeps his focus on the beast though, aiming another hack at its head.
As usual, Jack misses. He takes a quick (5-foot) step onto the wooden pier, wondering if it might afford him the advantage of higher ground against the great white reptile. (Does it?)
longsword: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 for slashing damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Jesper Roland Sørensen |
Micheria's kick punches the air out of the alligator and falls flat on it's stomach not getting up again. The corpse you found is missing it's right foot, but the left has a very nice boot on it and the second most have been here when the corpse were dumbed.
Canacha Bais |
"I wonder if the gator ate the boot? They eat things right... Hey uh... Jack Jack... be a dear and like um skin that skin will you?"
She said with a frown at the super large crocogator turning to the corpse....
It doesnt like like her friend does it?
Meliora Castafiore |
"...ah..."
Meliora breathes deeply. Still alive. Good. With everything over and done with, that leaves just one thing to do before hunting for sweet, sweet loot.
She turns to Canacha, eyebrow quirked.
"Melly? I'm a Melly, now?"
Micheria "Mic' Musca |
"Is the boot magic or something? I don't mind slicing open a... reptile but it is just for a half digested boot I would rather say clean, well clean-ish."
Mic will pitch in checking the creature for a foot and boot but will be much happier if there seems to be a real reason.
Jesper Roland Sørensen |
Meliora I assume you check for magic when Micheria asks. The boot is indeed magical and on closer inspection it looks like there is teeth marks at were the foot had previous been.
Jack Duncloak |
Jack quirks an eyebrow at Canacha's request but then draws his dagger and kneels next to the slain beast. "I've never skinned anything before," he admits beforehand as his dagger starts flaying the white skin. He also cuts open the great reptile's stomach to look for the second boot.
Not sure what skill to use for the skinning...Survival?
Survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Jesper Roland Sørensen |
Survival is indeed correct
Jack hacks and slashes a bit at the alligator's belly and after a few tries gets it open, and inside you find a matching boot it doesn't seem to have taken any damage from the stomach content.
Meliora Castafiore |
Well then, time to identify the boots!
Maybe!
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
Jesper Roland Sørensen |
Meliora doesn't know what these boots are at the moment, good there is always tomorrow. You now have a stair leading down into a dark storage room and a bunk room where it looks like an orge has trampled through it.
Micheria "Mic' Musca |
"Jack, what do you think? Shall we have a look in this storeroom? Better not to leave anything unknown to our back I guess."
Mic will head in that direction if folks agree.
Jack Duncloak |
Jack wipes the blood and guts off the blade of his dagger on the sole of his boot, sheathes the smaller blade, and draws his longsword again. With a nod to Mic he falls into line a step or two behind and to the side of her. His eyes dart this way and that in search of more hidden dangers.

Stacks of unopened crates—some draped in moldering tarps—fill most of the space, creating a maze. Two tables sit in the center, scattered with playing cards and a smoking, unlit lantern.
Canacha Bais |
"Do you think we can find someone to make boots out of the....hey wait up!"
She called hurrying after the others... She frowned at the state of the room.
"Hey uh... that lantern is smoking... you think that means someone was here not too long ago? You think they heard us battling the crocogater and took off?"
She asked with a frown drawing her pistol out again her eyes darting about.
Lena Silas |
"Smoking? That's not right. I think someone was just here." She looks around carefully.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Before the smoking lantern.
Lena looks around the area carefully, and then casts spellcraft on the boots.

Lena knows that the boots are a pair of Daredevil boots
As you all move in to the storage area a dagger flashes by Jack sticking to the table in front of him, and a voice sounds from somewhere. "You are not welcomed here chelsh, return from this place and nothing will come to you."

She called out doing her best to discern where the dagger came from.
"We dont want no trouble we are here looking for a missing person."
She added
Jesper Roland Sørensen |
I have just notices one of my posts have been eaten, the corpse outside is indeed Laria's friend. Thanks Canacha, I was sure I had it written down.
Micheria "Mic' Musca |
Before the voice.
"Wow, those are impressive boots. Not bad for someone fighting up close. I am sure both Jack and I could use them, not sure who else."
After the voice.
Mic smiles at the hidden voice, trying for a lighter touch to get more information.
"How about you show yourself and we can discuss what is here for us and what is not since you have no idea why we are here really? Maybe we just wanted to find someone lurking about to talk to?"
Meliora Castafiore |
Meliora palms her face in her hand, running the situation over in her head. Her finely honed sixth sense hasn't gone off, so this situation isn't a combat one quite yet.
Moreover, Thrune's cronies wouldn't call her 'Chelsh.' They're Chelish. Which, likely would mean...
"Does the phrase 'Laira sent us to track down a certain seller of silk' mean anything to you?"
That this was probably their missing person, a silk-smuggler who was likely not local, and also likely not a fan of the Celish. Or a native denizen. Best way to figure it out is to make it obvious who they are. She pulls out her scroll case and retrieves her Mage Armor scroll, just in case.
"If not, hey, feel free to toss another dagger. I could paint a bullseye on a wall for you to aim at. We'll make a show of it, have a few drinks, and we can all wake up with new regrets by evening."
Jesper Roland Sørensen |
"Missing person you are just here to hurt ush, all chelsh are. Except for Nan he saved ush smuggled ush out of Riddleport to end here underground, but now he can't help ush anymore, he ish gone we tossed him in the water after he died." the voice responds to Micheria and Canacha.
Canacha you can dicern that the voice is a female and it's coming from above you somewhere in the western area, perhaps onto of the crates but you can't see anything even with your darkvision.
"The dagger ish a warning not something to tossh for entertainment."
Jack Duncloak |
"Your story seems to have both elements of truth and lies--or at the very least evasion--to it," Jack addresses whatever hides in the darkness. "This place has been used in the past as a hidden hub to move people unseen by the Chelish government, that much is true. But for Nan to have just up and died and you to think that feeding his remains to that crocodile was a fitting end for him, well...that doesn't seem as likely to me. How did Nan die? Come out of the shadows and explain yourself and my friends and I will forgive the 'warning' you made by hurling a dagger at me."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20 (+2 vs. humans)
Lena Silas |
"We really don't want to fight you, but we can't just leave. This place doesn't belong to you. The owner asked us to find out what happened to Nan. What happened to Nan? We can help you." Lena lowers her weapon trying to look nonthreatening.
Diplomacy: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Canacha Bais |
With a very apparent scowl she added...
"And I'm not Chellish, Im from Ustalav, My blood runs with the depths of Varisian heros...If we are Chellish we would have been dragging you out from your hole already.... So pretty please with mint tea on top come out?"

Jesper Roland Sørensen |
You hear someone drop down from a stack of crates and into the light steps a tengu with a knife ready, but holding it in a defensive posture. "Ash said Nan helped ush from Riddleport to here, we were supposed to get further but the Thrune's overtake of your city put the plansh on hold. We didn't kill him but we are in a way responsible for his death as to the alligator we didn't know it lived here we had simply hoped that he would float out of the cave to the harbor. A few yearsh ago me and my sistersh adopted a newly hatched hatchling which we thought wash a tengu. We treated her ash a sister but she grew up to rapidly for our kind and despite her gentle nature she is qutie temperamental, we had to flee Riddleport cause of her and now that she hash killed Nan we are trapped here. We agreed to put her down, but I have not been able to build up the emotional gutsh to do it."
Meliora Castafiore |
knowledge (local) for wtf is a tengu: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
'Do a quest for the good of others' isn't her style. 'Do a quest for revenge over someone's death who she was supposed to care about' is a little closer, but tengu are supposed to be stealthy and quick studies when it comes to language.
Meliora leans forward conspiratorially.
"We might be able to help with that. On a... probably related note, do you know anything about destabilizing a regime? We're not exactly fans of the Thrice-Damned House of Thrune either, and we're looking for like-minded citizens to help us overthrow a right bastard of a mint-hating dotard."
Getting on the good sides of people who can sneak well enough to stay out of sight when they're trying to do things on the down low? For doing something that the bleeding-hearts in the party would probably want done anyways?
That's more her style.
Jesper Roland Sørensen |
She looks deep in thought. "If you help us we'll talk more. Our sister ish a Dire Corby, ash young she looked like ush but she grew up to our size in just two years."
She doesn't seem ready to talk about plans for the future at the moment.
Jack Duncloak |
"You mention having sisters," Jack says slowly. "Please call them out to join you--that will alleviate any misgivings we might have that this is some sort of ambush. Then we'll deal with your rogue adopted sibling."
No problem with Mic taking the boots.
Micheria "Mic' Musca |
Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 7 seems honest
"So we are to 'put down' the one you took in? Kill her for killing Nan? I guess it is reasonable but as Jack says I would want to know all of who we are dealing with, there cannot be secrets."
Jesper Roland Sørensen |
Diplomacy Jack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
"My sistersh remain hidden untill I know if I can trust you not to harm them, I'm their sole protector after our parentsh passed on." she responds "However I will tell that they are in Thusgaard room, they are to afraid of our adopted sister to go into the bunkroom."
Lena Silas |
"I'm sorry that this must be done. She sounds dangerous to you and has proved dangerous to others. We'll take care of her. She's not Tengu? Do you know what she might be?" Lena asks calmly trying to build a little trust.
Micheria "Mic' Musca |
"Aye, lets clean up the mess."
Love the artwork for that NPC. Generally I have trouble making that race look cool in my head.
Jesper Roland Sørensen |
Yeah the artwork for this tengu is really great, better then the one in advanced race guide they look like the bird people from world of warcraft in that one.
In the bunkroom you actually encounter the "sister" sleeping in a nest of broken bunkbeds and other breakable things.
Jack Duncloak |
Jack tags along with his blade drawn but hesitates at killing a sleeping creature.
Micheria "Mic' Musca |
Whispering to the others "Shall we wake her and see if she will leave on her own? I don't mind approaching and trying."
Mic would be more comfortable trying to see if reason is possible instead of just punching. The Tengu took her in as a sister she may be reasonable if faced with superior force.
Mic approaches, shield high, and speeks softly to the sleeping form.
"Young one, please wake to talk. You must leave these tunnels and find a better home."
Naturally adopting total defense before speaking.
Meliora Castafiore |
"They wanted her killed... I'm really more for 'just doing the job while they're down.' Makes our life easier, and I'm not sure we should do anything like a fair fight with an enemy whose race starts with 'Dire.'"
Canacha Bais |
Are their any sort of knowledge checks we could roll to see if we have any idea what a dire Corby is charector wise?
"Dire in your name does sound... well dire, but im sort of well feeling bad for it. I dont go into it much, but back in Ustalav tehre are a lot of dark evil things that are best destroyed as quick as one finds them... but others still labeled evil whom are not."
She began looking clearly troubled....
Meliora Castafiore |
"Fine. Do whatever. I'm staying in the back, where it can't maul me to death. One close call a day is already one too many."
If she notices Canacha's troubled looks, she certainly doesn't comment on them.
Micheria "Mic' Musca |
Sorry Mic's a city mouse.
Meliora Castafiore |
It's one of the few I don't have. orz
Micheria "Mic' Musca |
They way you phrased that makes it hard to say it but Mic would still want to try and convince to leave. My previous statement about going total defense and waking her up is still what I think she would do.
Meliora Castafiore |
Meliora is pro-CDG, but if the others opt to wake it up and try diplomacy she will just stand in the back out of claw/beak range.
