Pinja of the Bonuwat |

Good to know Korak. Its the spirit of the game that matters to me too.
So Pinja is drafted out for your inspection GM Mowque. I'm used to writing a far more detailed background so if selected I'll probably flesh her out more. I've attempted to make Pinja an arcane character that can be a strong back up healer.
However let me know what you think and where she can be improved.
Cheers

More good characters (and questions) pouring in. I just realized I forgot to tell you something in the Opening Post. I plan to go to Level 8, you'll level quickly, so feel free to adjust your build according to that. Sorry for the oversight!
Without further ado, here is the updated list. Only one more added.
Arcane
Pinja- Human Witch
Divine
Sborki- Grippli Druid
Briar- Gnome druid
Melee
Olaff Olaffson- Human Fighter
Abbo Lyrio- Half-Orc Brawler
Skill/Other
Tathlan Larethaeright- Elf fighter
Now on to the questions...
Heya Cydrius! Nice to see you here too.
GM, do you have any issue with a Dwarf having the adopted trait to get Infernal Influence??
All of this is fine for me. I like where you are going. A darker edge is OK, there will be some darker stuff in the game (although my natural style is more light-hearted).
The starting wealth for the character is 1,500 gp, half of 3,000 gp, which is the normal starting wealth for a 3rd level character.
Thanks for helping out and answering!
Seven hours sleep and nine posts later, time to get Pinja done.
Excellent! She is added to the list. Obviously we'll need to narrow down where she lived in the Expanse and such. I'd hate to have you just..live in some exotic location I use later! Would ruin the adventure.
I am hardly an expert. Which is not to say I couldn't break it if I put my mind to it, I just don't play that way.
We'd both probably break it without meaning to, hence why I don't want it in the game. At least the GM should know the rules, right?
Would you consider allowing a Goblin character, given a sufficiently convincing background and the like?
I'll consider it. Just remember, you'll be dealing with people who aren't too keen on goblins.
Keep those applications coming!

Pinja of the Bonuwat |

Thanks GM.
I looked at my Inner Sea World Guide and Bloodcove lies on the Vanji river between the Shackles and Sargava. Pinja probably comes froma coastal village further south - but spent many years as an apprentice in some mysterious location. In my mind I called it the Cave of the Ancestors.
There are several answers to your final question, why this game? Firstly I have seen my four other pbp games go terminal, possibly fatal in three cases. Secondly your laid back approach in the recruitment thread while answering questions promptly warms the cockles of my heart. But mainly it is because I enjoy African adventures, having run one and read (and reread) everything I can by Wilbur Smith. Lastly I have run Smugglers Shiv and a homebrew mini-campaign in Eleder in case you planned to mine that info.
Cheers

1. South is an excellent direction. We'll be going up-river into the heart of the Expanse, so that is fine.
2. What is your favorite Wilbur Smith book? See if we like the same one....
3. That will be no issue. I am mostly just using Heart of the Jungle and my own imagination.

How do you wish to handle animal companion hit dice? Will they simply follow "Hit points will be gained at each level equal to ½ class HD +1." without the gaining maximum hit points at first?
GM Mowque, I think this might have been overlooked.
I am still working on my character, I just keep adding to his backstory while updating his character sheet. Equipment can be quite the hassle. Especially when you consider that you are not sure when you'll find yourself back in a town.

1. Sorry, you were over-looked. Go with the rules, just to keep things simple.
2. yes. You'll be out in the bush for long periods of time (but not the whole game).

Are you referring to the PC rules of max for the first hit die, followed by ½ class HD +1 for the rest?
While I would not say that I am a strong writer, I have been amused since yesterday. A friend, whom I have been bouncing my character's backstory off, asked why I'm not freelancing. It's nice to get a boost of confidence now and then.

I love when a minor rule bogs me down. Let's make it clear, shall we?
*cough* Ahem *cough*
Animal Companions get the same HP system as PCs!
That should be better.

Joshua Hirtz |

No problem. What class are you thinking? I don't think you said?
I'm going with a Wildborn, Half-Elf whose Elven lineage comes from the Ekujae clan, Hunter who serves as an Aspis Consortium Jungle Guide along with this Tiger companion.

Joshua Hirtz |

Lol really? A tiger animal companion just like my submission?
I never took a look at what kind of animal companion you chose. The only animal companion that I was aware of having been chosen was a Hippogriff.

oyzar |

This week has been rather busy so unfortunately I haven been able to finish up my character. Will to do so this weekend. Hopefully my submission wil be able to match the great ones already in the running. Still going for a gnome oracle. Technically she'll be an divine caster, she'll be able to do some stuff normally reserved for arcane casters and would probably work quite well with other divine casters like druids or anything really.

Robert_Fuller_ |

I finally have my submission ready.
All of the stats, a more detailed background, etc can be found in my profile. Probably far more there than you actually want to read :-)
- Kupona has just escaped from slavery, probably killing some in the process, and is fleeing from the expected pursuit
- He wishes to learn a lot more about the world, both by seeing it and by travelling with these strange people
- He wants to find his tribal home
- He is mostly unaware of the fact that he is desperately lonely and, until he can return home, he wants to make some new friends

Another question! (you know I'm full of these >_>;;)
Would taking a mount like a tiger (or something similar) be more beneficial for something like a jungle excursion? I know you can get combat-trained riding tigers and such, and it seems like they might be more common in the area? I'm assuming anyways.
I feel like my character needs an animal to carry her things around (and her at times) and I wasn't sure if 'horse' would be appropriate in this environment.

GM Mowque |

Still going for a gnome oracle..
Sounds good!
I always liked River God, Seventh Scroll (The sequels start going a little...different) and Sunbird.
The Seventh Scroll is a guilty pleasure of mine (just like Clive Cussler novels)

Awesome! Looks like a fun character to play with. I hope I get the right feeling everyone is looking for. I will have to add dinosaurs though, I wasn’t planning any *goes off to scribble*

Tigers for everyone? I mean a tiger (even in high fantasy) is a crazy animal to tie your tent too and besides all the natives are going to freak out. If you don’t want a horse get something else like a donkey or something (even a riding lizard or some type?) that doesn’t eat villagers on a regular basis.

GM Mowque |

Alrighty. I just wanted to make sure horse would be acceptable through a jungle and there weren't some serious problems with trying to get a horse through that kind of terrain.
Sorry if I seemed snippy. As much fun as it is to already have a running gag, crazy mounts are hard for the GM to RP well as well as make sure all encounters, plot points and locations fit the animal. That said a giant lizard sounds pretty cool...

I am not fussed. Mounts are pretty low key things for me so it was just a matter of what the mechanical complications of terrain are for horses. And since everyone else was getting tigers, you know, gotta get on the bandwagon.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

I need to get to work now but wanted to submit something before I left.
I would like to present Edgerson. I need to go over him one more time before he is ready. If you get a chance to check him over let me know what he is lacking.
Two questions and one might just might me being hard of reading.
1. What familiar did you pick?
2. Please provide your thoughts on 'why this game' (but I know you aren't finished so I'm not susprised you didn't get to it yet).
Otherwise I like the wizard, good spell choices to dish out some damage and teiflings are cool. Also, good to have someone of intelligence on this mission...quest....thing.
You'll have to give him some cool motivation for wanting to go into the Expanse and such, but that all comes in time, I know!

A highly regarded expert |

Admixture. Love that school! Have an elf I almost submitted, but the grippli thing kinda took over.

Tikkle |

Well. This is Tikkle. The campaign he was just in died, and it made me sad. therefore, I want to take another stab at him. He is not the most outdoorsy character, but after years on the open ocean, it seems time to him to find his roots and what may have happened to his father.
I present to you Tikkle Ashcoat, Catfolk Swashbuckler and Pirate captain. His current stats I believe are level seven, and he is very poorly worked for what a Swashbuckler should be. That said, I kinda want a chance to redo him right. Character sheet link is in the header.
Also, are you one of those that is against multiple submissions? I have other ideas that I've been itching to play, and ultimately I can squeeze into any party comp.

GM Mowque |

Feel free to re-work him and submit Tikkle! I can't really judge him until he is the right level and all, but catfolk are cool and swashbucklers are fine!
I'm going to say one application per applicant. Just seems more fair (although I've asked the same question for some games!) for everyone (including me).

oyzar |

I took a look at mounts to figure out if any were suitable for my character and I made several surprising discoveries. There are no medium sized lizards suitable for riding. Tigers and lions are listed as possible to ride if brought up properly, but as mentioned they would cause some problems which I don't think I would want to deal with (I'll leave that to the people with actual animal companions). Giant Frilled Lizards are listed as ridable and unless we can somehow work out a medium lizard I can train to ride/combat? I'll probably go with that even if it costs a hefty amount of cash. The standard combat trained pony seems very fragile, though it's also a consideration. I'm surprised at how undercosted Bisons are, though they are not suited for this game at all so I won't be getting that of course. I assume we can use handle animal before the game just the same as crafting?
Edit: Bah, I feel silly now. There is the Giant Gecko that is medium. I might go with that. It's really squishy though... I don't really care for offensive power, but it would be nice to have a lizard that doesn't die pretty much no matter if attacked.

GM Mowque |

Due to the recent discussion on mounts and tigers....
I want to say something that may impact your purchases. Most of the traveling in this game will take place on boat. You'll be spending a great deal of time on boats (or various sizes). So remember that when you buy that war-trained armored bison.

oyzar |

Giant Geckos it is then ;). Giant Frilled Lizard will likely be too large for a boat. Though I might drop the idea entirely, my character won't be a very good rider...
What kind of fey lives in the jungle? Between the racial trait's "Bond to the Land", "Fey Magic" (which honestly is just a magical version of bond to the land) and "Fey Thoughts" (jungle) gnomes could be set up to have a strong connection to fey jungle itself and the fey that live there.

That makes me think that perhaps switching over to a constrictor snake might be more useful considering it can move through the water. The natural predators in the water worry me though.

let the guide speak here, no spoilers...
wild jungles of the Mwangi Expanse. Indeed, the deep and
pristine forests, being mostly undisturbed by humanoid
hands, are exactly the type of environment in which fey
thrive. The dryads of the Expanse are often bonded to
enormous kopak trees with girths the size of small houses,
stretching up to support the top layers of the canopy. Pixies
may be found throughout the jungle, and their capricious
natures make them just as likely to hide as to harass or
assist the scattered Zenj tribesmen they run across (though
explorers and other obvious foreigners are frequently too
tempting a target to pass up). Nymphs may be found here
as well, along with jungle satyrs who take great pleasure
in their forays into isolated villages, wreaking their jovial
havoc among those who are easily seduced. Their groves
and bowers are well hidden, but the satyrs range far and
can often be traced by the sound of their pipes as dusk turns
into night.
edit: Fey stuff will also have plot relevance.

GM Mowque |

Something that may or may not have relevance, but would basically immediately make me throw a character concept out the window:
Would an alchemist who uses fire bombs immediately be a problem because of accidentally-setting-the-jungle-on-fire issues?
Jungles are generally very wet and green places that don't burn if you try. You'll be fine (that being said, be careful around the boat).
