About Pinja of the Bonuwat
"Mist - get back here, you feathered spellbook! Stop flying into danger!" "Krraarrk, peach plees!"
Appearance
Pinja's tall nilotic figure tops out at almost seven feet, showing her mix of Bonuwat and Mauxi ancestry. Her carved longspear has rows of serrated shark's teeth down its top ten inches. Mist, the grey macaw parrot, often perches on her shoulder to nibble an ear or demand treats.
Personality
She is cool, calm and proud of her magical prowess as a force for good. That pride is a legacy of ten years training under the tribal witchdoctor, Mogalla the Speaker and she is one of only five Bonuwat to complete her rigorous studies in the Speaker's life. The ethos of the Speakers is based on supporting and advising warriors with knowledge and spells. She does not trust the Aspis Consortium and by extension most people of Bloodcove, but hopes to find a way to free her tribe from their greedy chief. One day.
Background
Pinja and her two younger siblings were raised to the south of Bloodcove in a small fishing village, raised by their Bonuwat mother Hanali and Mauxi father, Dabolo. The strange inter-tribal marriage was at the behest of the Speaker in order to provide her with another apprentice.
When Pinja was nine, her idyllic life ended, and despite being prepared to travel to the Mouth of the Spirits, the lost contact with her family hurt for many years. At the cave's mouth, the Speaker explained how hard the next decade would be to all the apprentices and how few succeeded. Also that one apprentice was foretold to come as a future leader and advisor to all tribes, the Honeybird, from her Mwangi ancestors, a voice of truth to safeguard the Expanse. One by one, the other apprentices fell by the wayside, but Pinja's determination and desire to make her own family proud kept her on the Journey. Five months ago, the trials complete, and with her idiosyncratic Parrot companion, Morning Mist (or just Mist) flying high above, the nineteen year old Pinja traveled home to see her family.
Unfortunately her father no longer lived and mother lay dying after a sudden storm wreaked havoc two weeks before. Pinja' nursed Hanali to the best of her ability but ultimately the injuries proved too serious and the infections killed her. She kept her father's fishing spear and mother's shell necklace as a memory of their love. On some level, Pinja wondered if the Gods were testing her or worse, but she kept faith with the goddess Shimye-Magalle.
But after the storm and with the village in disarray, its boats smashed and livelihood lost, the seafaring Bonuwat chief, Garuuna Sharkblood, agreed to a deal with the Aspis Consortium leader, Bellif of Taldor. Food and materials arrived to safeguard the villagers but in return many young men and women became Aspis sailors, porters and servants.
Pinja saw this servitude as the first step towards the end of the old ways, and the Aspis as a disease. Young and proud, she faced off against Garunna and Bellif. Instead of laughing in her face, the cunning Bellif saw her as a way to learn more of the Mwangi Expanse, a way to increase what he knew. Knowing of the best resources, easiest routes and Interior tribes would increase his opportunities for wealth. So he gave Pinja a dark red journal to fill, it acts as a letter of introduction too if she should meet anyone of the Consortium.
If filled to his satisfaction, Bellif promised Pinja that her brother and sister would be freed. She agreed to the terms and headed north to Bloodcove to find help and as luck would have it heard of the explorer Bandrift and his offer.
Religion
Pinja believes in the Mwangi goddess, Shimye-Magalla, an amalgamation of Gozreh and Desna. Her faith makes her a curious traveler with a natural appreciation of the wilderness over the next hill.
Friends and Enemies
1) Mogalla the Speaker is an elderly witch with access to divination and great knowledge. She sometimes contacts Pinja in her dreams with advice and stories to guide her.
2) Bellif of Taldor is a cunning and powerful dealmaker with many coastal tribes in his clutches. He has several agents already placed within the Mwangi Expanse and wants one more in Pinja.
3) Forola Snakeskin is a failed apprentice with several strange birthmarks. She hates Pinja for her success as a witch and now lives within the Expanse as a hedge wizard of meager talents.
Party role
Pinja is an intelligent healer who can channel, who's spells and hexes often hamper opponents and boost warriors. She has several useful skills of knowledge and arcane studies. With above average speed and strength, she can use her crossbow or longspear too. Finally her parrot can act as a fine lookout so longer as he is well-fed.
Ambitions/Future Path
1) Pinja seeks the magical means to free her tribe from the Aspis Consortium control.
2) I wonder if Pinja could gradually turn into a paladin of her faith or if necessary another. Its one of the reasons I chose an LG faith - to keep that avenue open. Maybe I will develop her code of conduct and honour so that the girl can move in that direction, it very much depends on the party makeup and how the campaign unfolds. But it would be cool to see.
