Sorry guys, was out of town the past couple days. Let's raise the (ripped and tattered) sails and get this boat rolling!

Yes, let's take 20.

Reminder: I believe some of us mentioned using some mending magic to make the repairs go much faster?

Did we get any magical healing last night btw?

Also, I think I forgot to say this, with our holiday hiatus... Reijo wanted to check out the captain's dressers and so forth himself before sunrise, try to figure out what Hyrix was looking for, see if the captain left anything of not only value but of special interest there. Would he have found anything? I guess we had the time for him to take 20 for 28 on his Perception check to search?

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

I don't believe there was much left to go around. Two tough fights in a row will do that to you!

You can indeed search the Captain's cabin, and I'll include that in the next game update...

...which also reminds me I didn't actually give the specifics of the stuff that fell off the halflings and Hyrix, despite intending to.

On the halflings, you find:
2 small masterwork shortbows
2 small shortswords
1 Potion
1 Tanglefoot Bag
200 gp
80 sp
50 cp

On Hyrix (who is still wearing some of this, since he's been disarmed but not stripped, I believe, and I would not be spoiling anything by telling you that some of this is magical fanciness):

Mwk chain shirt...
Mwk rapier...
A rather nice cloak...
A shiny ring...
An sack that seems larger on the inside...
2 potions
1 thunderstone
1 tanglefoot bag
a bandoleer, belt pouch, and mwk backpack
a spell component pouch
3,315 gp

Salty Sea Reavin' n' Slayin' Chap 2 -- HP: 22/22 | AC: 16 | T: 12 | FF: 14 | CMD: 17 | Fort: +6 | Ref: +4 | Will: -1 | Init: +2 | Perc: +5 | Rage: 6/6

Reijo tries to pocket the ring before anyone sees it! :O
Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

When called out on it, "Oi! How'd that get in me pocket?! I swears, it musta fallen in on its own..."
Bluff: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

Reijo's interested in the gold (obviously), the ring (obviously), the tanglefoot bags, and the thunderstone. If the potions are ID'd as curative, he's interested in them, too. He might want a small-sized short sword or two, if he can use them as daggers. We can split it up if someone else is interested in one or more of the same items.

Ol' Salty won't challenge that, even if he made those checks, but as a player I'd like to warn you about uneven shares within the party, especially in the form of hiding them. It tends to upset members pretty quickly, and can lead to the game collapsing in on itself. I've already played in a game where one character has +3-4 gear, while the rest are on +1 or even masterwork at level 8. It's not a fun time.

If you would like a fairly flexible loot system, I would recommend splitting all GP evenly, then let people take items that would work best for their character. While that system would be unbalanced for one dump of loot, over the course of an entire game it would tend to even out.

Now, I highly doubt it, but there is the question: "Will the NPCs care that we've taken the spoils? Do we owe them anything?" Probably not, but I'm not certain. I'd be pretty surprised if Paizo had written something like that.

Anyways, I'm not here to fight. I just want to make sure that everyone gets a reasonably fair share.

Salty Sea Reavin' n' Slayin' Chap 2 -- HP: 22/22 | AC: 16 | T: 12 | FF: 14 | CMD: 17 | Fort: +6 | Ref: +4 | Will: -1 | Init: +2 | Perc: +5 | Rage: 6/6

Sorry about that. Let me first say that I entirely agree with the sentiment of sharing gold evenly and splitting items by need. That is my default choice, in fact, for when I run games as well as play.

That said, I do like to enter player personality into the mix, to a degree. Reijo is a greedy pirate, no doubt about it. It's just like him to try to skim a little here and there.

I also have one character in another game (actually, a PFS character) who is the exact opposite. He's a LG monk who is overly generous, making sure to keep a few potions of clw in order to hand them out to whomever is wounded. He also takes great personal risks to help others get out of tight situations: one time, for example, he intentionally provoked AoO's in order to let the disabled party wizard flee two warriors who caught him in melee.

So, it's really all in good fun, not out of an immature desire to take more. And karmically, my characters balance out. :)

But ultimately, I am totally fine if everyone would prefer Reijo cease trying to steal from the others. Please post your opinion or PM me if you prefer: if at least one of you dislikes it, I will not do it anymore.

Male Human Shaman 5 | HP 28/39 | AC 10 T 10 FF 10 | Ft +3 Rf +1 Wi +8 | Init +0 | Perc +6 l CMD 13

Thanks for understanding, I really appreciate it. I would recommend that you don't steal from the party, but feel free to take from NPCs, stores, etc. I'm sure there are plenty of ways that Reijo can be the greedy guy he should be without impeding the party.

Here's a little brainstorm for ways Reijo could be greedy without taking from the group. Hope it helps:

- Stealing from NPCs, shops, etc.
- Cutting corners on a job to make a profit.
- Aggressively negotiating for pay, even resorting to violence or blackmail for the largest payout.
- Looking between the lines of a contract for ways to abuse it.
- Flaunting your wealth in front of the needy.
- Taking credit for things you have not done.
- Not all treasure is silver and gold. What other things might Reijo want desperately?

Going to wait a day to let everyone consider Hyrix's plea before letting Cap'n Lanteri perform a coup de grace.

Also, I love you guys. You're definitely one of the more awesome groups I've played with, and love the interaction between you as players and your characters.

I agree with Salty that, while RP-wise it's perfectly cool, theft in the party is a slippery slope. If you'd like to keep it as a theft for roleplay purposes, that's perfectly fine--but keep in mind that, for the purposes of fair gameplay, the other players can take the 'missing' loot out of the share you would have gotten. To be fair, I can't imagine that there will be an inequitable share of treasure among this group, even if the ever grumpy, perpetually greedy Reijo has his eye on the shiniest piece in every hoard. As said, you guys are awesome.

On that note, this first part of the adventure is basically wrapped up. Its treasure distribution is a little lopsided, leaving it in perhaps two (was it three?) places. I can also assure you that the coming pirate-ventures have plenty of shinies to go around in a more normalized distribution.

@Reijo - you can totally use the shortswords as daggers, if you'd like.

Well.. Suny is kind of shaking in some little bit of rage and asking the poor feathered blighter questions.

For some one who's been done wrong? He's got a really weird way of interacting with strangers. :P

Consider it done then, no problem. :) Fair gold splitting and items as needed going forward. Good ideas, Ol' Salty, some of which I definitely intend to use. :)

In fact, he's already cut corners in a way to gain extra profit... In the interest of full disclosure, Reijo managed to skim 150 gp off of what should either be (a) Iulia's (the ship quartermaster's), (b) Hartha's (the masthead carpenter), or (c) party loot to be divided among us. Recall Iulia gave us a sack containing 250 gp to buy a masthead? [LINK] Reijo handed it to Hartha (a.k.a. "Sleepy") for her work... but it only contained 100 gp (he pocketed the rest when nobody was looking). [LINK, you can read the GM spoiler]

I vote we keep and split it as party loot (30 gp each). Reijo did fib and tell Iulia that it cost the entire amount, implying the rush to get it done ASAP had cost us. And Reijo did much of the work on the masthead himself, with Hartha finally helping out after drinking and sleeping for most of the time. But if you guys want to be honest and return it to Iulia, or to Hartha, I'm fine with that.

This seems as good a time as any to mention...

You've all leveled up to 5, just in time for the real pirate adventure to begin!

As we set sail, you won't have to micromanage the daily life aboard a pirate ship but will likely be contributing to its operation in some non-mechanical manner suited to your skills. Likewise, you'll have a chance to interact with the more interesting of the Magpie Princess' crew to make all manner of friends and enemies during your search for plunder and peril!

I'll add a list of all interesting NPCs besides the nameless crewmen keeping the boat afloat once we get underway.

Yeah Vik, please do stay. Honestly, with the GM NPCing you all this time, it wouldn't interfere in the least if your returned.

Basically, all we did since you left was spend the night on a mostly empty ship, fight a witch, capture Hyrix the mutineer (whom the captain executed), and are now just beginning to set sail for that treasure we all competed for early on.

Reijo will take 1/6th of the gold as well. By Ol' Salty's calculations, I believe that comes to 587.25gp. Note that I am subtracting the 30 gp he added, since I already claimed it. Everyone except Reijo should get what Ol' Salty gets: 617.25 gp.

If noone else wants it, Reijo tries on the ring. Does he notice anything different? Does anyone else notice anything different about him? Also, what does the ring look like? What gems/precious metals?

The shortbows and short swords are small-sized, right? Reijo's taking both mwk. "short swords" then (a.k.a. mwk. daggers for medium creatures), unless someone else wants one?

I already have a +1 mail shirt.

The sack (which is probably a bag of holding) could be used by the party to hold stuff not claimed, if nobody else wants it for any particular reason (e.g. I don't think we have any archers who could use it to store 300+ arrows). This way, we can easily hold the party loot and remember to sell it whenever we're near a market... and Suny is free to sit with the party loot inside the sack at any time. :)

As for the clw potion, I am a fan of melee combatants getting first dibs. If agreeable, that leaves Suny, Vik, and Reijo. Feel free to claim it ladies. Otherwise, Reijo will take it... though to be fair, since I have the most HP (especially when enraged), one of the ladies should get it imo.

Btw Helio, what's our living quarters situation? And is there a seller onboard, someone we could not only sell to, but buy gear from? I could use a chest and a good lock, for instance... I've lot a LOT of gold to carry. Oh, the problems of having too much wealth, lol.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

@Reijo - The ring is untarnished silver, topped with an inset opal. Faint engravings on the ring have been worn with age, but there appears to be a pair of swords crossing behind the gemstone. The stone itself is vaguely shield-shaped, though you don't really feel any different wearing the thing.

@All - It probably comes as no surprise that pirate ships are not luxurious places. You've all been given hammocks in the crew quarters, but they're not exactly yours. There's more crew than there are hammocks, so there's definitely some sleeping in shifts. There are footlockers available for your personal belongings, but no actual locks on them. Theft among the crewmen is frowned upon... but not unheard of.

If you want to buy anything, Iulia's the one to talk to. As the ship's quartermaster, she has full access to the stocks in the armory as well as all the goodies locked away in the treasury. Ports are also not particularly hard to come by, so stopping for supplies, equipment, or the miscellaneous tavern odd-job are all quite doable.

Helio, cool to know thanks. Reijo will claim a footlocker then, and will speak to Iulia about purchasing a couple of things. Want to handle that ooc so we don't slow the gameplay?

Items he's looking for:
A superior quality lock (150 gp). He'd also like to buy marker dye (15 gp) to secretly place on the lock, so he knows who to pummel when someone tries to break in. :)

Working on her 5th level. Can't decide between Power Attack and Deadly Aim. Thinking Deadly Aim, to make my pistol worth using, but Power Attack would give me more melee ability. Thoughts?

Also, both my rapier and pistol go to 1d8, so that's nice.

F Exotic Elf TBA

Doesn't power att come with a trade off penalty to hit?

I'm not sure. I'm never good at judging things like this.

Salty Sea Reavin' n' Slayin' Chap 2 -- HP: 22/22 | AC: 16 | T: 12 | FF: 14 | CMD: 17 | Fort: +6 | Ref: +4 | Will: -1 | Init: +2 | Perc: +5 | Rage: 6/6

This may confuse you even more, but since Vik seems to be going with both rapier and pistol... have you considered going for the Sword and Pistol tree of feats?

Suny, Power Attack is essential for two-handed weapon and two-weapon melee fighters in particular. Also good for one-handed melee combatants. Especially at later levels, the sheer damage dealt goes up remarkably: the gain in damage is much greater than the loss to accuracy. And you can take the Furious Focus feat to eliminate the attack roll penalty on your first attack to partially compensate, as well as take Weapon Focus and other feats to make up for the remaining attack penalties.

I have a 2-handed weapon ranger in another game, 10th level, who has PA and FF: he deals an extra 9 damage on both his attacks each round, and only suffers a -3 penalty to his second attack roll, so it's around +14/+6 instead of +14/+9.

Deadly Aim makes a lot of sense for a ranged fighter. And you can take feats to avoid AoOs for shooting in melee (e.g. Sword and Pistol) and other ones, if you want to focus on firearms.

Guess I'm not helping with decisions though, as I am only adding more things to think about, lol.
